kate middleton and her yummy mummy fashion hitting the front pages and the mad dash to copy the duchess' style. good morning let's get right to the fast-moving overnight developments in the terror scare gripping america's closest allies over in europe. in belgium armed soldiers are fanning out to guard possible terror targets one day after raids that nabbed dozens of suspects. and in the uk the threat level for police officers is now at the highest level ever meaning an attack is quote, highly likely. >> also in the uk for the first time bodyguards from scotland yard who are protecting kate the duchess of cambridge are now reportedly carrying tasers and france also on its highest terror alert level with 120,000 police and soldiers mobilized.

>> with one european official warning of multiple thousands of potential terrorists on the loose, we're going to start here this morning with abc's alex marquardt who is covering the story from brussels. alex. >> reporter: good morning, dan. you can see behind me the belgium military heavily armed soldiers, part of a deployment of 300 soldiers who have taken up position at potential targets. this as european police have made sweeping arrests of terror suspects as they themselves become targets. this is a country, a continent, on high alert. in belgium police armed with automatic weapons patrolling its sensitive buildings terror alert level raised to its second highest. it comes after police here carried out searches to foil an imminent plot against them to kill officers in the streets and in stations. this raid turning deadly after two suspects opened fire on police who killed them. >> this operation was meant to dismantle a terrorist cell, not

only the terrorist cell but also the logistic network behind it. >> reporter: inside broken glass and bullet holes but also a trove of ak-47s, pistols, explosives and police uniforms. authorities in europe are closing the net around suspected terrorists, 15 arrested in the belgium plot, 12 detained in france. in berlin, a series of raids nabbed two people. in london on friday, an 18-year-old woman arrested at an airport on suspicion of terrorism. across the ocean, the u.s. on guard after the arrest of this man, allegedly plotting to bomb the capitol, the fear now that people inspired by isis and al qaeda or who have fought with them are planning more attacks. now, police from the u.s. to europe are on alert. the uk on friday raising the threat level against police to the highest ever indicating an attack is highly likely. and it's not just the police that security officials fear may

be targeted but europe's jewish communities, as well. here soldiers patrolling outside the belgium jewish museum. when i asked europe's counterterrorism chief whether he thought there would be more violence he warned it's impossible to prevent another attack. >> so many on edge. alex, thank you. to politics. 2016, believe it or not, is just around the corner. the republican party has approved nine debates for the presidential primary elections, the big question now, will mitt romney with two failed bids under his belt take another shot at the white house? he spoke before gop power brokers last night, and abc's gloria riviera has the story from the white house for us this morning. good morning, gloria. >> reporter: good morning, paula. well, there are two sides to every story. that's certainly the case in politics. some in the republican party saying, look, mitt romney would make for an experienced and, therefore, reliable candidate. he lost the last election but he did it with 47% of the vote.

that's not bad but others say, look, two tries is enough. it's time for someone new. for republicans, this may be a sight for sore eyes or simply a sore spot. former massachusetts governor and two-time presidential candidate mitt romney center stage friday at the gop's annual winter meeting in san diego, speaking publicly for the first time since indicating he may make a third run for the white house in 2016. >> i'm giving some serious consideration to the future. >> reporter: it's a political 180 for romney who's repeatedly said he's not running. his wife ann romney even telling abc news last fall? >> we're not doing that again. >> so, no? >> it's a no. >> reporter: if he does run, romney may face a gop field that is wide and varied. new jersey governor chris christie talking more and more like a candidate in the key campaign states of iowa and south carolina. >> we need to renew the spirit and the hopes of our state, of our country and our people. >> reporter: jeb bush announcing on facebook a leadership pac

allowing him to raise funds for candidates including himself if he does run. >> to be clear i'm seriously going to consider running. >> reporter: the reaction to these three men decidedly mixed at a time when many in the party are calling for a fresh face. perhaps a boon to rising star rand paul. the kentucky senator told supporters in vegas he isn't worried about romney trying for the white house saying, there will be a big spirited debate over whether or not he's had his chance. well, romney may be the most experienced candidate, but he also may have the worst track record. still, it has been done before, ronald reagan losing twice before he moved into the white house. paula. >> gloria riviera, thank you from the white house for us this morning. make sure that you join george stephanopoulos and our stellar political team for complete coverage of the president's annual state of the union address along with the republican response tuesday night. it all begins at 9:00 eastern. >> he makes an interesting point about ronald reagan. there is historical precedent

here, so an interesting race already and we're many, many months away. a lot of other news overnight, and let's get it over to mr. ron claiborne for a look at the headline. >> good morning to you, mr. dan or dad harris. >> i'll take both. >> good morning to you, paula. and good morning, everyone. we begin with that historic same-sex marriage decision expected later this year by the u.s. supreme court. the justices have agreed to decide once and for all whether gay couples have a constitutional right to marry in all 50 states. the court will begin hearing the case in april from four states where couples lost their appeals to marry or have their marriages recognized. the decision is expected by the end of june. and pope francis is in the philippines just as a massive storm is barreling through that region. the pontiff wearing a papal poncho braving the elements today as he visit s tacloban, area ravaged by a typhoon two years ago.

6 million people expected in philippine capital of manila this despite a new typhoon closing in on that country. joe paterno is back at the top of the list of winningest college football colleges. the ncaa and penn state where he used to coach have agreed to a deal that restores 112 team wins to penn state and puts paterno's victory totals back at 409. paterno, of course, was criticized for his alleged failure to act on sex abuse claims leveled against assistant coach jerry sandusky and his coaching career victories were erased from the books. paterno died in january of 2012. sandusky of course was convicted and sent to prison. and spectacular new video this morning of the explosive landing of the spacex rocket. the rocket crashing down at a 45-degree angle there. a bit of a mishap. the booster was supposed to make history by touching down upright and intact on a floating barge. spacex founder elon musk said afterward, close, but no cigar.

and caught on camera, quite a surprise for a couple of guys in california following a trip to the car wash. two brothers heard a banging noise coming from the trunk of their car. with guns drawn police surrounded the car and opened the trunk and out climbed a man would worked at the car wash. he was cuffed and taken away by police. no word yet on why he was hiding in the trunk of that car. >> maybe he got stuck there -- >> allegedly. it's a possibility. >> benefit of the doubt. >> his lawyer can explain that one. >> some residents in malibu got their own surprise when two donkeys or as they say in new york dunkeys somehow got loose. the pair were spotted blocking a street -- >> that's not -- >> there's a donkey. >> that's one donkey but there's another one. trust me. a local man and his dog seen earlier were seen trying to corral them. and get them to safety. it took a team effort but the donkeys are now back in their enclosure. >> they were never together at one time. >> do you think ron mights that

we heckle him during the entire news? >> i think he thrives on it. >> we got more. one for ever-growing file of dumb alleged criminals who allegedly are dumb criminals. take a look at this. randy schafer of houston, texas, he is not the alleged dumb criminal. he said that someone trashed his pickup truck and stole 5,000 bucks in cash. not sure why it was in his pickup truck. but there it was and his ipad. he figured it was gone for good and the thieves had gotten away until he looked at the ipad photo's stream in the cloud. he saw this selfies of a couple of guys grin ingning with $100 bills fanned out in front of their faces and even stuffed into their mouth. >> that's pretty dumb. >> dr. ashton can elaborate on that. those clues but so far police have not made any arrests still looking for those suspects. >> got away with the crash.

>> don't put money in your mouth. >> that was the first lesson. >> that was my biggest concern. ron, thank you very much. we do have other health news of a more serious variety this morning. the number of children who have died from the flu is really on the rise right now and eight weeks into an already rough flu season, two dozen states are now reporting that the virus is at a, quote, high level. abc's dr. jen ashton is here with more. >> reporter: this morning the death toll is on the rise due to the season's flu epidemic. the flu responsible for 19 more pediatric deaths bringing the total to 45 children so far this season. now 24 states battling high influenza-like activity pushing hospitals like this one in las vegas to capacity. >> sometimes we have to go on what's called divert where we have to close our doors to ambulances and they have to be redirected or rerouted to other places. >> reporter: dr. deva nchltn moore mans the ship in the trauma center in las vegas. >> these viruses and the flus and things like that, sometimes it can lead to pneumonia. >> reporter: and what he's seeing in nevada is happening

nationwide. >> this is probably one of the more severe flu seasons i've seen since i've been here in vegas. >> reporter: the epidemic canceling classes nationwide. districts shutting down in south dakota, oklahoma, and massachusetts. now new numbers from the cdc show only 35% of flu cases match the season's vaccine, confirming cdc's suspicions the vaccine is a poor match. >> obviously a huge problem, the fact that the vaccine is a poor match, so we have dr. ashton with us this morning, and the question for you is, what do you do if you've got somebody in your house who has the flu. >> listen, as a mother and doctor i take this very seriously. and the threw has already hit my extended family so here's what you can do if it hits your house, number one, you really want to make a hospital sick room and put everything that person will need in one room, try not to let them circulate all over the house and try to keep other people away. if they are getting worse and not better day by day, you actually want to see a health care provider or doctor and, remember, dan, those antiviral

medications, they're not just for people who are confirmed to have the flu, but they're also for those who are exposed at high risk of developing complications. >> we're all parents here. we know it's particularly dangerous for children. how do you approach it differently for kids? >> so many of the principles are really the same. so the things i just went through, they really don't differ for children with the exception that it's pretty hard to keep a small child in one room and tell them not to come out, but you want to minimize contact as much as possible and, again, be in touch with their pediatrician. >> very quickly. how low is the bar for going to the hospital with a kid? >> any difficulty breathing, any change in color around the nose and mouth, if they're not able to keep fluids down or their fever is very high or they have a pre-existing condition, do not wait, but a piece of bright news, hospitalizations due to the flu are dipping slightly, so that's a bright spot. we'll watch that trend moving forward. >> one silver lining, dr. ashton, thank you very much. now to the new videotape

police are hoping can help them catch a teenage couple on the run accused in a crime spree. their parents begging them to come home, and abc's linzie janis here with the story for us this morning. good morning, linzie. >> good morning, paula. we just got off the phone with the sheriff's office leading this search, and they are getting flooded with possible sightings right now in florida, texas and alabama. but the teens continue to evade capture. police say they're extremely worried about what this bold pair might do next. this morning police hoping this surveillance footage of 18-year-old dalton hayes and 13-year-old cheyenne phillips at a walmart in south carolina will help lead to their capture. the teens allegedly cashing forged checks inside the store on monday. the bank notifying authorities about the stolen checks days later by which time police say this real-life bonnie and clyde were long gone. >> we want to get a hold of him before he hurts her, hurts himself. >> reporter: it all started two

weeks ago on january 3rd. phillips is reported missing by her father. as her boyfriend of three months hayes posts engaged on facebook. >> please tell me he loves her. he actually bought her an engagement ring. >> reporter: the following day sheriff's deputies in breckenridge county, kentucky, report the couple escaped during a foot chase and are believed to be behind a series of break-ins. then on january 11th, stealing a truck right out of this garage. >> it sounded like a bomb went off but it was the door hitting the building. >> reporter: tearing through a cattle farm on the property before crashing the pickup truck hours later allegedly stealing this red toyota tacoma. the young outlaws then using a checkbook they found inside the vehicle to get cash in kentucky, north carolina and south carolina before heading to georgia. that's where police say they dumped that stolen pickup

stealing yet another truck with two loaded handguns inside. >> please turn yourself in. >> reporter: well, hayes was due in court on january 5th to face burglary and theft charges from a previous case. now, since he's 18 and cheyenne is 13, he now faces the charge of custodial interference among others. the list is, of course, growing as time goes on. >> the longer he's out there the more trouble he's in. linzie, thank you. we're going to move on now to a different story involving a mission accomplished. a climber who braved whiteout conditions 20,000 feet up on alaska's fearsome mt. mckinley. he's now done something nobody has ever done before. michelle franzen with this incredible story. >> reporter: this is heaven on earth for lonnie dupre, an emotional journey to the top of alaska's mt. mckinley also known at denali, north america's highest peak.

at 20,320 feet, this moment is literally breathtaking. with ice chunks covering his face and beard, dupre's quest gives him bragging rights to be the first solo climber to achieve the feat in january, the darkest and coldest month on the summit. now back down from the mountain, the minnesota native still can't believe it. >> glad to be there. also glad to have it behind me and just overjoyed with the view that you can obtain from the summit. >> reporter: for 29 days, the veteran climber tackled some of the toughest terrain and brutal conditions known to man. many others haven't survived. trekking his way up the summit where winter winds clock up to 100 miles an hour on some peaks and temperatures plunge to 51 degrees below zero. >> so mentally it's difficult because you're doing it in the dark, and you're doing it solo. my body was healthy, and i just

kept an eye on the weather and kept moving. >> reporter: that unpredictable and unrelenting weather caused dupre to turn back three other attempts during the years, but the mountain kept calling him back. >> even then i wasn't quite sure. i was never sure i was going to make it until i was actually standing on the summit. and then, of course, because i'd been trying so hard for four years, i just -- i kind of broke down a little bit. >> and he can check that off his box. dupre said he had about ten minutes tops on top and said he had to quickly turn around because most people don't survive the night if they don't make it down to the 17,000 mark. so if you think about his climb as well as yosemite climbers it's been quite a week so what are you guys doing today? >> the couch. the first person to spend 12 hours on my couch uninterrupted. there aren't that many firsts left so it's quite amazing that he was able to -- >> in the harshest of conditions. >> bragging rights for now. >> absolutely. >> michelle, thank you. >> michelle, thank you. a big development in what has to be the most watched baby bump.

the duchess of cambridge kate due in april is finally i think she's starting to show. there's a little bump there and abc's lama hasan is on royal baby watch for us. >> reporter: royal fans, get ready for the baby cambridge bump watch. kate is pulling double duty this week showing off that royal bump at two separate events. stepping out for her first official engagement of the year, the duchess of cambridge looking, oh, so glamorous in a navy shift dress with tweed trim. you can definitely make out the royal baby bump now, six months and growing. >> the website crashed within minutes of her appearing. people trying to go on that, trying to buy the dress for themselves. so once again the kate effect was in play. >> reporter: a day later, the duchess makes another appearance at one of her charities for foster kids. this time dressing the royal bump in a brown silk shirt dress from one of her favorite main street stores. >> people are really excited to see how kate's baby bump is

growing and i think this is the first time we have actually seen her baby bump on show. >> reporter: capping off the visit with a very british kind of afternoon as the duchess enjoyed some tea with sandwiches and cakes, and there's no stopping the duchess who's been dubbed the yummy mummy with three more events this monday, no doubt showcasing that royal baby bump. also present at these events heightened security. more police are now accompanying kate at these latest events. >> it's the stepping up, their equipment, they're also stepping up their protection of key targets and, of course, the royal family are key targets. i mean, they're incredibly high profile and it will be incredibly important for them to be kept safe. >> reporter: so security has been stepped up with kate's scotland yard bodyguards now carrying stun guns and that's in addition to their usual firearms. dan, paula. >> lama, thank you. i think we saw the baby bump. we had to circle it. rob, what's the weather looking

♪ i'm going back to the earth ♪ ♪ i'm going back to the earth ♪ >> so this is the view from 18 miles above earth with an iphone along for the ride. the folks at urban armor gear sent it attached to basically a hot air balloon. once it popped it was a whirlwind descent down to earth. this was all captured on a gopro, by the way, traveling through temperatures 79 degrees below zero. winds of 70 miles per hour before that parachute finally opened. now, the iphone froze in space but was taking phone calls once on earth and our infomercial for the gopro will end up. >> i dropped it in the toilet many times and ceases to work -- >> what, many time, dan? >> you know, we don't have to get too detailed.

>> they told me he was a doctor and his name was dr. robinson. >> reporter: playing doctor and getting away with it for one month. a ruse out of hollywood. in "catch me if you can" leonardo dicaprio faking his way through medical duties. >> dr. harris. >> yes. >> do you concur? >> reporter: and just like diicaprio's character this real-life impostor never treated patients. according to a police report, the unnamed suspect looking the part in a white lab coat and with a stethoscope around his neck. that 17-year-old boy roamed the corridors of st. mary's medical center. >> you have to show i.d. to get into the hospital. i'm very surprised somebody made it that far. >> reporter: duping everyone from hospital security to unwitting colleagues, but certified. ob/gyn dr. sebastion johnson >> i told him, you know, we can't really approve anything until we talk to our office

manager and we see your credentials. >> reporter: in 2011 another 17-year-old from florida matthew scheidt caught in the act. >> i was told to take over. >> reporter: scheidt later found guilty of impersonating a physician's assistant. in this new case the boy isn't facing criminal charges but how can people like this get away with these high-profile impersonations? >> they are very good at deception, extremely manipulative, well spoken. what they do is keep themselves out of situations where they could be tested. >> reporter: the teenager's mom says he recently stopped taking his medication and is seeing a real doctor. and police in west palm beach are still investigating the possibility of charges in this case. by the way, the doctor who busted him after being in an examination room with the teen said when he initially saw him he thought, wow, they're getting out of medical school younger and younger these days. >> maybe he's a prodigy. >> thank you, kendis. we appreciate it. we want to check the overnight headlines once again with ron claiborne who is so coordinated, he never once

dropped his phone in a toilet or anything like that. >> no, i haven't. >> he hasn't, he says. >> i have not allegedly. good morning to you again, dan and paula. good morning, everyone. police in the u.s. and in europe on high alert following sweeping terror arrests overseas. in the uk the threat level for police officers is at the highest level ever. meaning an attack is, quote, highly likely. and in belgium 300 soldiers deployed after they foiled an imminent plot to kill officers there. the ohio man who allegedly planned on attacking the u.s. capitol building is being held without bond. christopher lee cornell is charged with plotting to attack the capital with pipe bombs and alleged lyly shooting government officials. that electrical malfunction on the d.c. metro said it took workers 45 minutes to turn off the power to the station which may have caused the delayed response of a local emergency worker. one woman was killed. 80 other people sickened by smoke.

temperatures in the teams across new york city and surround area. take a look at a live shot. that's beautiful. you put a scarf on, gloves, the earmuff, whatever it takes to get out and enjoy, crisp. only up to 28 and windchills in the single digits so the northeast, one of the few sections of the country that today will be below average and there is the reason, the big blue "h" slides offshore. warm up tomorrow but temperatures at or below freezing. here comes our next system kind of teaming up with a coastal low that will spread some snow winter storm watches up for parts of vermont but i think it's mostly going to be a rain event and rain actually intensifying as we go in through the big game tomorrow night in foxborough and also rain as i mentioned earlier in the broadcast i mentioned for seattle and portland could see several inches locally. 6 inches and flood watches posted now for parts of seattle. meanwhile, across the southwest, 69 in san diego. 75 in los angeles. staying mild and dry actually, you could use the rain. it's been a dry january thus far. 80 degrees in honolulu.
