>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday january 18th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi carolyn. good morning to you. live doppler 7hd shows a band of showers well to the north around mount shasta, draining in the bay area. we have widespread fog and visibilities have been short, especially the north bay. four miles in oakland, san jose. livermore just a quarter mile visibility. up toward concord 2.5 maulvis and the from the north bay this is where you are looking at the most visibility restrictions, about a half-mile around the bay. even some mist will a--

accompany the drizzle. there could be a slight chance of showers for the the folks in the far north bay. lent of clouds today more sunshine east and south. we will talk about whether or not we are getting more rain in here before the month is out. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. there will be another demonstration in oakland tonight calling for an end to police violence t gets underway at 7:00 p.m. at 14th and broadway. it's among the many protests hang this weekend to coincide with the mlk holiday. alisa harrington has more on the demonstrators' call for change. >> a march in east oakland. a rally in san francisco's castro district. these are just a few of several demonstrations happening in the bay area over the martin luther martin luther king, jr. holiday weekend.

protests against violence involving black men and other minorities. the movement is also to take back mlk's legacy and support nonviolent civil disobedience. in oakland a group marched from the fruitvale bart station to the substation. four were arrested on the way. [chanting] >> among the demonstrators a person whose son was shot and killed when he was 16. she's traveled to value list all over the country, demanding justice. >> new york, chicago, all around oakland, everywhere to spread the word we aren't going to go anywhere and we try to educate people to get off the couch. >> katie williams a sister of a man shot and killed by san francisco police in october. >> i'm going to fight for all. this has to end today. this has to stop.

>> they blocked traffic at 18th and castro. a group called kueers and lives of color. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> earlier yesterday about two demonstrators took over the corner of san francisco street to reclaim the legacy of dr. martin luther king, jr.. it's one of several weekend protests to recognize the work of the slain civil rights leader. another protest is scheduled today at 5:00 at powell and market streets. protesters in berkeley are telling local leaders things need to change. they said to the local mayor and others at ed roberts campus yesterday morning. they are demanding an end to

policy that is they think un fairly target minorities. >> now is the time, to institute policy solutions that are not a mystery to our community. >> i think we can do it. we have a smart council we have a good community and we can think about these things. i think we can come up with some real solutions we can put in place. >> the mayor said he hopes the forum leads to change. in washington, d.c., thousands marched yesterday to support a sea of blue. a sea of police officers. organizers say police officers are not thanked enough for the dannyers they face in the line of duty >> the family of a man shot and killed by a richmond police officer has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. more than a dozen people gathered outside of the market where 24-year-old richard petty

paris died september 14th. officer has testified that perez reached for his gun. the lawsuit states he had his arms up. >> he was not overly aggressive. he was intoxicated and a well-trained police officer should have had not have been overly aggressive, gutting his hands on him and getting into a physical altercation with him. >> his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit to drive. the richmond police chief said he's confident that litigation will show that the officer made a difficult, but necessary decision to broke himself. a mysterious material is affecting hundreds of burdens in almeda county. 20 have already died after their feathers became coated in this strange sticky substance. and while the state investigates, a nonprofit is trying to save the birds. lisa amin gulezian has more from fairfield.

>> this should also be white and this is what we are looking at. it's kind of crusty, hard. >> it is a gray, goop by gulf of mexico that's coating these birds' feathers and taking aware their protective outer layer. >> once you break that feather coat you have a hole in their down jacket and they get cold and he's guys were wet all over. >> 89 were rushed to the international bird rescue center. they were swimming in the stuff, which then became embedded in their feathers. 20 birds died of hyperthermia. >> this is where my family lives, it's nice to enjoy the water and scenery and it will affect everything. >> rescue officials have never seen anything like it. >> we have received almost 100 birds in less than 24 hours. ice a significant influx and we've called in several emergency staff. we've called our entire volunteer force in to help out. >> it takes two volunteers and 30 minutes to clean each

contaminated bird and they are using basic household products like dawn and vinegar. caring for the contaminated birds is time-consuming. they are stressed, scared and sick. it will take at least a week for them to recover. hope is fish and wildlife investigators will have found the cause of the mystery material by then n fairfield lisa amin gulezian, ay7 news. now that a federal judge overturned california's ban on foie gras, it's back on the menu and some of protesting. a manbarbecue was targeted last night. members of the group "united for animals" protested about the meats in the mission district. they said force freezing ducks

for meat is animal abuse and want to educate the public. >> we are asking that people know where their meat, dairy and eggs come from. >> the foie gras ducks that are used that we sell, are treated humanely and definitely more humanely than other animals out there. >> the restaurant owner said the protesting did not deter his customers. investigators are looking into the cause of a suspicious fire that broke out at a vallejo home, it was two alarm. firefighters arrived around 7:30 last night. flames were shooting out the back at smoke bill load out the front. fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes. no one was hurt. so median bill cosby is bringing his stand-up comedy tour to northern california tonight. not everyone wants to see him on stage. individual row from denver last night shows a large crowd led by

an attorney protesting outside. as you know, more than 15 women have claimed the comedian drugged and raped them. crosby has a sold out show tonight in the central valley. while there's not strong opposition to him doing stand-up, there some people are selling their tickets, sag he should not be on stage right now at all. >> like i didn't think -- i thought he should lay low until it all comes out. and it's all over. >> turlock city management said if anyone wants to get privileged their tickets, they will help find buyers. >>. in florida they say they have captured the modern day bonnie and clyde that went on a crime spree including breaking into trucks and stealing checks and breaking into homes. the 18 and 13-year-olds were

found asleep in other pickup truck in panama beach early this morning. they have gun the process of extraditing them to kentucky to answer for multiple felony charges. the teenagers from kentucky started their crime spree two weeks ago. they left home after hayes posted on facebook the two were engaged and his mom confronted phillips about her age. she lied and said heaves 19. a popular road is open again. it is between sonoma and napa county. the turns are not wide enough for larger vehicle. the driver called the highway patrol and the gps told him to go the with a he did. he did so despite the warning signs. they had to remove the bus and wait for another bus to pick

his hotel. the flu is now touching every part of the country. emergency rooms are slammed with 24 states now reporting a high level of flu-related illnesses and along with it a troublings rise in the number of children who have died. here's abc news reporter bosni. >> this flu season is showing no mercy. some hospitals in hard-hit areas are overwhelmed. >> sometimes we have to go and close our hospital doors to ambulances and they have to be redirected. >> a push to protect children. disinfecting rooms shutting down schools in south dakota, oklahoma and massachusetts. the cdc reports another 19 children have died from the flu, bringing the pediatric death toll up to 45. this year's vaccine a disappointing 23% effective on average. the flu can strike anyone. in new jersey 40-year-old

nicole borne an active mother, was taking care of her family when she succumbed to the virus. and a 46-year-old was out grocery shopping one day before he died. >> i want people to know that it does happen and you do have to be careful. >> the flu season is still peeking in some areas with several weeks to go. abc news, washington. >> here in the bay area four people died since flu season began in september. an aspirin a day to prevent heart attacks and strokes could do more harm than good. a new study published said more than one in ten prescribed a preventative aspirin regimen were already at low risk for hard attack or stroke. taking aspirin when not needed could lead to you alsoers and bleeding in the intestines and

brains. a strike has been averted two days after kaiser permanente reached a deal with nurses. it will increase pay by 14% over three years. union members will be voting on the new contract over the next month. governor jerry brown and u. c. president janet napolitano will team up in an unusual partnership it review the university's spending patterns. accord together l.a. times brown and napolitano will meet periodically over six months. the reviews come over a standoff or uc's plan to increase tuition by as much as 5% over each of the next three years if the governor doesn't raise his current offer of state money. brown has criticized what he says are high administrative sal entries inadequate emphasis on online instruction.

a father and son's decades-old business selling copies of the san francisco chronicles in the city's sunset district ends today. "the chronicle" has decided to focus on retail sales rather than using. the 64-year-old has sold papers here since 1999. and they said they have outlasted the dozens of others who have sold in the area until now. >> i'm selling papers with my son on our last saturday here in january, 2015. we are closing out our days. >> the number of neighborhood vendors affected is not known but he said "the chronicle" has stopped all sales except for downtown. tomorrow you can get a firsthand look at how a habitat can be brought back to life. this point in sonoma county was

use ford cattle grazing and nearly became a casino before it was purchased in 2005. conservationists spent $18 million restoring it but weren't expecting it to cover for decades. but now thanks to a rain it's a marsh with wildlife instead of cattle or construction vehicles. they said they are amazed how quickly the transformation has taken hold. new 2.5-mile drive that winds through the marsh will be open tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and another great outdoor option for tomorrow's holiday, muir woods national monument. there's no entrance fee at that park or any other national park in honor of martin luther king's birthday. other parks, sequoia national park and yosemite national park. those big storms last month were a welcome site to bay area

residents hoping to see the end of the ongoing drought but the wet december has given way to warmer, dry january. according to our media partner the mercury news, it's been difficult for california business and farmers who depend on the water. experts say not worry just yet. it's still too soon to tell if we are heading our fourth straight year of drought conditions. lisa, this is nothing that you don't that you don't. >> well, more importantly is we are thinking this may be history. last year in january we had .06 and that was the driest on record and we will beat that. that's crazy. that's january, them we have plenty of time to make it up. remember december. so live doppler hd shows rain shower to the north. official sunrise 7:23. sets at 5:18. it may visit parts of the north

bay. that's really our only chance of some rain. but in this early part of the morning hours we are looking at the fog. from our roof camera you can see a little bit of that here. 48 in san jose. most of the fog is from san francisco north and also into the east bay. 52 half moon bay. we are looking at mid-50s san francisco. sfo you can probably count on those delays. numbers are mild. dewpoints are high. plenty of low level moisture. we just can't ring out any of that moisture. we need a mechanism to do that and that would be a cold front. but it's too weak to really manage much. any impact. 48 in livermore. visibility down to a quarter of a mile. here's a look from livermore to the north bay. a half-mile visibility for the most part. as you go through parts of these areas, it gets very, very foggy. and then visibility will increase. i expect this to be the case throughout the next several hours. and then we will see the ceilings lift a bit, but not

everywhere throughout the day. to the south you get the sunshine. a chance of showers north and we will see record warmth by the end of the week. plenty of 70s around the bay. hears the weak front. it is up to the north. a little impulse will swing on through and as it does it may initiate a light shower. clear lake, maybe san rafael. here's wait it looks as we time it out. but through the rest of the morning hours, not much is happening. and not much is being pushed south. in fact the cloud line really up in the north bay extending through the northern i-80 corridor. as we go through the week, temperatures staying flat in the mid-60s by saturday and sunday. we are warming through the 70s in livermore. even oakland. and kind of on the muggy side. slight chance of showers mainly through the early part of the day, low 06ths here. mid-60s and more sun for morgan hill san jose livermore.

the movie selma will march today in alabama to honor the birthday of martin luther king, jr.. paramount picture says the march will also include selma's director and the actor who portrays dr. king in the movie. the event will commemorate his civil rights leadership and his development in the protests of 1965. those demonstrations are the subject of the film. as we said before, it's among the nominees for best picture at the academy awards. the president of the academy of motion pictures, arts and sciences said this your's oscar nominees are inspiring her to push for more diversity. some spoke out after they tied 20 are white, no women in the directing or writing category. she said outreach to women and artists of color has been the focus of the academy for the past two years. and mark your calendar for

details coming up in her accuweather forecast. two orphan bear clubs have gotten a clean bill of hill and adjusting well to their temporary home at a lake tahoe rescue center. ears abc7 news anchor dan ashley with an update. >> the cubs arrived in late december. it was a string of 15 cubs that made 2014 lake tahoe wildlife center the busiest year ever. one was found at an indian reservation at the top of a fence. he was lured down with food and then taken to tahoe works he is rooming with another rescue cub. she was found near the town. sawyers. both cubs are just under a-year-old and both came in weighing in only about half of what they should a veterinarian examined the cubs, and pronounced them skinny, but healthy. one weighs 25 pounds, the other

32. >> we want to get them up to at least 50 or 60 pounds and then fish and wildlife will determine when and if and where they are going to be released. >> no one knows what happened to the cubs' mothers or why so many orphan cubs have turn up in the last year. rescuers speculate it may be the drought or a change in attitude about state wildlife officials about rescuing cubs. >> the bottom line is they are out there they need help and we are there to help them. >> the cubs will stay in a rescue center until they are healthy and mature enough to survive on their own. five of the cubs rescued last year have already been released back to the wild. dan ashley abc7 news. lake tahoe wildlife care is the only place in northern california with a license to care for the wild bear cubs. volunteers are raising money for a new larger facility so they can help more cubs and other injured oregon fanned wildlife. if you would like to help, we have a link at abc7news.com.
