>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday january 18th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. there is shower activity well up into northern california and eye the fog that we are worried about this morning. it is dense in pockets. starting in the south bay where things are a little bit better in terms of visibility. four miles is the worst from the airport to mountain view. five miles hayward, san jose.

but here is where it gets dicey from livermore, quarter mile. three quarters mile in concord and all the way into the north bay. once again, pea soup. very very hard to see. with the low level moisture, the mild temperatures, upper 40s from san ramon and livermore 54. we will look for the tail end of this front to limb many on through the north bay. so there could be a few spotty, light showers but it's really going to be unimpressive. you will notice by the afternoon some hazy afternoon sun, east bay and south bay. and we have an extended outlook that will feature more unusual weather. that's coming up. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. there will be another demonstration in oakland tonight calling for an end to police violence. it gets underway at 7:00 p.m. at 14th and broadway. it's among the many protests happening this weekend to coincide with the mlk holiday. alisa harrington has more on the

demonstrators' call for change. >> a march in east oakland. a civil rights slide show. a rally in san francisco's castro district. these are just a few of several demonstrations happening in the bay area over the martin luther king, jr. holiday weekend. protests against violence involving black men and other minorities. the movement is also to take back mlk's legacy and support nonviolent civil disobedience. >> until we get justice, there will be no peace. in oakland a group marched from the fruitvale bart station to the substation. four were arrested on the way. [chanting] >> among the demonstrators, a person whose son was shot and killed when he was 16. she's traveled to rallies all

over the country, demanding justice. >> new york, chicago, all around, oakland, everywhere to spread the word we aren't going to go anywhere and we try to educate people to get off the couch. >> katie williams, a sister of a man shot and killed by san francisco police in october. >> i'm going to fight for all. this has to end today. this has to stop. >> they blocked traffic at 18th and castro. a group called queers and trans of color. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> earlier yesterday about two dozen demonstrators took over the corner of san francisco street to reclaim the legacy of dr. martin luther king, jr. it's one of several weekend protests to recognize the work of the slain civil rights leader. another protest is scheduled today at 5:00 at powell and

market streets. protesters in berkeley are telling local leaders things have to change. they said to the local leaders and the mayor and others at ed roberts campus yesterday morning. they are demanding an end to policy that is they think unfairly target minorities. >> now is the time, to institute policy solutions that are not a mystery to our community. >> i think we can do it. we have a smart council, we have a good community and we can think about these things. i think we can come up with some real solutions we can put in place. >> the mayor said he hopes the forum leads to change. in washington, d.c., dozens marched yesterday to support a sea of blue.

the sea of blue march was led by police officers wives. organizers say police officers are not thanked enough for the dangers they face in the line of duty >> the family of a man shot and killed by a richmond police officer has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. more than a dozen people gathered outside of the market where 24-year-old richard petty perez died september 14th. the officer has testified that perez reached for his gun. the lawsuit states he had his arms up. >> he was not in a position to defend himself he was not overly aggressive. he was intoxicated and a well-trained police officer should have had not have been overly aggressive, gutting his hands on him and getting into a physical altercation with him. >> perez' blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit to drive. the richmond police chief said he's confident that litigation will show that the officer made a difficult, but necessary decision to protect himself.

a mysterious material is birds in almeda county. ss a mysterious material is affecting hundreds of birds in almeda county. 20 have already died after their feathers became coated in this strange sticky substance. and while the state investigates, a nonprofit is trying to save the birds. lisa amin gulezian has more from fairfield. >> this should also be white and this is what we are looking at. it's kind of crusty, hard. >> it is a gray, goopy gunk that's coating these birds' feathers and taking away their protective outer layer. >> once you break that feather coat, you have a hole in their down jacket and they get cold and he's guys were wet all over. >> 89 seabirds were rushed to the international bird rescue center. they were swimming in the stuff, which then became embedded in their feathers. 20 birds died of hyperthermia. >> definitely concerned about

it i mean this is where my family lives, it's nice to enjoy the water and scenery and it will affect everything. >> rescue officials have never seen anything like it. >> we have received almost 100 birds in less than 24 hours. it's a significant influx and we've called in several emergency staff. we've called our entire volunteer force in to help out. >> it takes two volunteers and 30 minutes to clean each contaminated bird and they are using basic household products lake bake soda dawn and vinegar. caring for the contaminated birds is time-consuming. they are stressed, scared and sick. it will take at least a week for them to recover. hopefully fish and wildlife investigators will have found the cause of the mystery material by then. in fairfield, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. now that a federal judge overturned california's ban on foie gras, it's back on the menu

and animal rights pro advocates are protesting. a barbecue was targeted last night. members of the group "united for animals "protested outside 45 meats in the mission district. they said force-feeding ducks for meat is animal abuse and they want to educate the public. >> we are asking that people know where their meat, dairy and eggs come from. >> the foie gras ducks that are used, that we sell, are treated humanely and definitely more humanely than other animals out there. >> the restaurant owner said the protesting did not deter his customers. investigators are looking into the cause of a suspicious fire that broke out at a vallejo home, it was two alarm. firefighters arrived around 7:30 last night.

it was on remington court. flames were shooting out the back as smoke billowed out the front. the fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes. no one was hurt. comedian bill cosby is bringing his stand-up comedy tour to northern california tonight. not everyone wants to see him on stage. video from denver last night shows a large crowd led by an attorney protesting outside. as you know, more than 15 women have claimed the comedian drugged and raped them. crosby has a sold out show tonight in tirlock in the central valley. while there's not strong opposition to him doing stand-up, there some people are selling their tickets, sag he should not be on stage right now at all. >> like i didn't think -- i thought he should lay low until it all comes out. and it's all over.

>> turlock theatre management said if anyone wants to get privileged their tickets, they will help find buyers. in florida they say they have captured the teenage modern day bonnie and clyde that went on a crime spree including breaking into trucks and stealing checks and breaking into homes. the 18 and 13-year-olds were found asleep in a pickup truck in panama beach early this morning. the truck was stolen. authorities said they have gun the process of extraditing them to kentucky to answer for multiple felony charges. the phones started their crime spree two weeks ago. they left home after hayes posted on facebook the two were engaged and his mom confronted phillips about her age. she is 13, but she lied and said she was 19. >> a popular tour is open again after a tour bus blocked traffic for more than four hours

yesterday. the tight turns on trinity road between sonoma and napa county aren't wide enough for wide vehicles. the driver said his gps told him to go this way and he did, despite seeing the warning trines. they had to remove the truck and the 40 passengers on a winery tour had to wait for at bus to pick them up. i mean i've heard of gps telling people to drive into rivers and draw convenience but use your own judgment. >> and add a little fog to that and it's can be treacherous. here's the north bay camera. the visibility is not much about a quarter mile. we may have a little mist and drizzle in parts of the north bay, but we are looking for the dry weather pattern to unfortunately continue for the holiday. we will talk about the accuweather seven-day forecast when we return. >> thank you lisa. also ahead the growing flu

both direction near gulf mill road. a number of pileups today due to icy roads. this accident that you are seeing involves more than two dozen vehicles on i-76 and upper marion pennsylvania. it happened just before 4:00 a.m. our time. a number of bridges in the area have been shut down. the ben franklin bridge, the walt whitman bridge the betsy ross bridge, all due to icy conditions there. this morning honolulu police are investigating the alleged robbery and beating of pga golfer robert allenby. it allegedly happened after he went to a bar friday night after missing the cut to continue playing in the tournament this weekend. he said he was kidnapped, beaten and robbed. he said afterwards he woke up in a park more than six miles away from where he was taken.

he said he was found by a bystander who helped him back to his hotel. the flu is now touching every part of the country. jammed with 24 states now 24 states now reporting a high level of flu-related illnesses and along with it a troubling rise in the number of children who have died. here's abc news reporter bosni. >> this flu season is showing no mercy. some hospitals in hard-hit areas are overwhelmed. >> sometimes we have to go and close our hospital doors to ambulances and they have to be redirected. >> a push to protect children. disinfecting classrooms, shutting down schools in south dakota, oklahoma and massachusetts. the cdc reports another 19 children have died from the flu, bringing the pediatric death toll up to 45. this year's vaccine a disappointing 23% effective on average. the flu can strike anyone.

in new jersey, 40-year-old nicole bourne, an active mother, was taking care of her family when she succumbed to the virus. and in oregon a 46-year-old was out grocery shopping one day before he died. >> i want people to know that it does happen and you do have to be careful. >> the flu season is still peeking in some areas with several weeks to go. abc news, washington. >> four people have died in the bay area since the flu season began in september. governor jerry brown and u.c. president janet napolitano will team up in an unusual partnership it review the university's spending patterns. according to the l.a. times, brown and napolitano will meet periodically over six months. the reviews come over a standoff or u.c.'s plan to increase tuition by as much as 5% over

each of the next five years if the governor doesn't raise his current offer of state money. brown has criticized what he considers are high administrative salaries and inadequate emphasis on online instruction. a father and son's decades-old business selling copies of the san francisco chronicles in the city's sunset district ends today. the newspaper has decided to foe cause on retail sales rather than using them. the 64-year-old has sold papers here since 1999. and they said they have outlasted the dozens of others who have sold in the area until now. >> i'm selling papers with my son on our last saturday here in january, 2015. we are closing out our days. penalty killers are saying our farewell to customers and people who have seen us over the many

years. >> the number of neighborhood vendors affected is not known but he said "the chronicle" has stopped all sales except for downtown. >> the big storms last month were a welcome sight to bay area residents hoping to see the end of the ongoing drought but the wet december has given way to a warmer and dry january. according to our media partner, the mercury news, the swift change has been really difficult for california businesses and farmers who depend on the water. experts say don't worry just yet, it's still too soon to tell if we are heading into our fourth straight year of drought conditions. but, lisa, it sure seems that way. >> yeah, each and every day we get deeper into that. especially with january with no rainfall at all but we have a weak front to the north. we will see what that can do for us throughout the rest of the day today. right now live doppler 7hd showing the activity well up into northern california. and it's the fog that is creating some big problems around here.

a pacific flow is allowing for slight rain to the north and dense fog from the roof camera. you can make out the clouds. visibility has been in effect in san francisco. delays at sfo about 33 minutes. and it's 47 in san jose with 49 in morgan hill. and 54 on the coast. here's a look at the airport. low 50s santa rosa, napa, petaluma and upper 40s where fog is the worst out here by the delta and river more really reporting reduced visibility. so it's been a common theme day after day. the fog, and even into the south bay and the peninsula. mountain view, 2.5-mile visibility. the coast not doing too bad. it will take until about 10:00 until it lifts. and still the ceilings will be over oakland and san francisco. oakland, areas of dense fog with a chance of showers north with a very weak system that will all

but wash out throughout the afternoon. that will leave us with more sunshine east bay and south bay. mild averages highs and record warmth is focused on the bay area. and much of california as we go through the latter part of the week into next weekend. we are talking 70s here 60s in the south. and we've already been in the 70s in southern california." here's the pacific satellite picture. all the cloud cover, the moisture well to the north. but if we take you hour by hour, you will notice that we are looking at some returns through sonoma county. but by 10:00 11:00, even that begins to fall apart. heavy cloud cover from marin to sonoma and throughout the afternoon we will see partly sunny skies and the 60s returning east bay and south bay. if you are in the sierra nevada for the holiday or heading up or expecting folks to come home the snow level is way high 6,000 to 7,000 feet with the clouds and 60s again. 64 for monterey. 74 for los angeles. and temperatures here, a little

>> welcome back. we are starting this half-hour weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, this cold front is well too far to the north to make much of an impact. the low level moisture and low visibility in the south bay. much worst in the east bay valleys. livermore quarter mile. concord three quarter mile n the north bay once again quarter to half-mile visibility. so very dense fog. and with all the cloud cover, temperatures ranging from the upper 40s inland to the low 50s, oakland and san francisco.

this morning. >> president obama is expected to announce some tax changes in this week's state of the union address. president is seeking an increase in taxes on the wealthiest americans by raising the capital gains rate and eliminating a tax break on inheritances. he then wants to use the revenue to fund new tax credits and other cost-saving measures for the middle class. the proposals will be announced during tuesday's state of the union address. one of the movies nominated for an oscar this year is the civil rights drama "selma." and there's a campaign to allow teenagers to see it for free. it's a grass roots efforts in new york city and it's going all over the nation, including here in the bay area. several movie theaters from emeryville daly city, oakland and san francisco are allowing students in free while the tickets last.

>> this 14-year-old is going to see selma. the drama about the 1965 civil rights march, led by dr. martin luther king from selma to montgomery, alabama, to demand black voting rights. >> i think if people know with their past, that they will be more into their future, as well. because we want to make the world better, not worse. >> she will watch that movie for free, simply by presenting her student i. d. at selected bay area movie theaters. the idea began with a group of african-american business leaders in new york who almost overnight raised $256,000 to buy tickets for 27,000 students there. word of those businessmen said it makes young people witness to history they only read about.

>> this movie gives a representation. it puts living people and words and actions and images to what was pivotal in the development of the voting rights act of this country. >> coles believes with the conversation about race once again front and center in the wake of protests like those over the shooting death of unarmed teenager michael brown, the movie "selma" comes at a pivotal moment. black leaders in the bay area have quickly raised more than $150,000 and counting so seventh, eighth and ninth graders can attend through the mlk holiday on monday. >> the movie is all about like how do you live together and how you make peace. >> san francisco mayor ed lee plans to take a group of ninth graders to the movie on monday. >> for them to see me there with them i think is a strong indication that i'm for civil rights, as well. i'm for their equality. i'm for their lives that matter. again, the freebie runs through

open enrollment ends february 15th. visit coveredca.com today. two orphan bear cubs have gotten a clean bill of health and are adjusting well to their temporary home at a lake tahoe rescue center. here's abc7 news anchor dan ashley with an update. >> reporter: the cubs arrived in late december. they are the last in a string of 15 cubs that made 2014 lake tahoe wildlife center the busiest bear year ever. one was found at an indian reservation at the top of a fence. he was lured down with food and then taken to tahoe where he is rooming with another rescue cub. she was found near the town of sawyers. both cubs are just under a year

52 in half balloon bay and the view from mt. tam. can't yet see all the moisture from below a few peaks of sun. 50 petaluma, 51 concord and fog has been with you all morning long in livermore. so we are looking at airport delays about 33 minutes. once again, from the north bay the delta, into concord and livermore. anywhere from a quarter to half-mile visibility. the approach to the bay bridge, and the golden gate bridge very foggy. better in the south bay but the san carlos airport and mountain view looking at about two-mile visibility at times. the best is actually at the coast. not much in the way of fog there. but still we will have considerable cloudiness there today with temperatures in the 60s. our exploratorium camera with the low clouds, there are areas of dense fog a chance of showers. just a slight chance. that's pretty far north. then as that system exits a few weak impulses and a bridge ridge of high pressure by the end of

the week, allowing temperatures to soar to unnatural readings, upper 60s at the coast 70s and even some 80s in southern california and monterey. here's a look at our pacific satellite picture. we do have the mid- and high-level clouds. but as we go through the next several days notice not much in the way of change around oakland temperature-wise. mid-60s. maybe a dip on tuesday. but then by thursday this is when the ridge gets established and we will see the temperatures continue to climb. low 70s by the weekend. we may not even stop there. in the south bay look for filtered sun. mid-60s san jose. we will look for low to mid-06ths from redwood city to mountain view with the clouds hanging on through the morning hours. then in the afternoon low 60s and mostly cloudy skies in san francisco. a few peaks of sun are but most of the cloud cover from mari had n and sonoma, low and mid-60s. still a mild day in napa. low to mid-60s from berkeley to oakland. 63 oakland and you head inland
