this is abc7 news. a spirited scene with a serious mission. a group in san francisco makes a commitment to change and to keeping the dream alive. good evening, everyone. we begin with a 12-hour rally in support of homeless rights and in honor of martin luther king junior. it is a right to rest rally happening now in san francisco. alyssa harrington is there live. alyssa, you have been there for several hours and the group has been there since, what 5:00 this afternoon? >> around 50 people have gathered and will booy spending the night -- be spending the night here. the bart station is one of the places police have cracked down on people sleeping in

walkways. the demonstrators are here to protect their right to rest. on blankets and eating pizza and watching a civil rights documentary with signs that say "housekeys, not handcuffs" demonstrators gathered on the side of san francisco's market street. they are spending the night near the powell street carol car turn around for a sleep in. >> we are demonstrating a right to rest for people who have no place to sleep. >> and they are standing in solidarity with the black lives matter movement. >> we are out here with the people and sharing food with the people and letting people know they have supporters. >> this peaceful demonstration is one of many happening around the bay area over the martin luther king, junior holiday weekend. the coalition on homelessness organized this event. they say criminalizing people who sleep in the street is not the solution. >> it is like throwing salt in people's wounds. not only are they having to sleep outside they are being

criminalized for it. >> they brought warm food and water to share with the homeless . he calls finding a place to rest an uphill battle. >> it is a struggle to get some food sometimes. i am trying to fight for a place to sleep. it shouldn't be like that. >> organizers are pushing for the passage of the rest to right act where sitting and sleeping in a public space would be illegal. demmon -- demonstrators plan to be here until the morning. then they will march from the fruit veil station to the frank ogawa station for a day of action. abc7 news. >> thank you alyssa. another rally and this one in oakland at 14th street and broadway. a group calling itself anonymous organized the rally. it has been a mostly peaceful march. it began around 7:00 and is

a decade's old tribute to the civil rights era will have its final run tomorrow. the freedom train commemorates martin luther king junior's march in 1965. for the last 30 years passengers have taken the ride from san jose to san francisco, but officials say tomorrow's trip will be the last because of dwindling community interest. they depart san jose tomorrow morning at 9:45. thousands of people are expected to mark the holiday by taking part in a commemorative march and parade to yerba buena gardens. the march begins tomorrow at 11:00 and the route crosses lefty odoule's bridge. a symbol of violence and victory in the civil rights movement. oprah winfrey and other

stars of the movie "selma" marched in selma alabama in honor of dr. martin luther king junior's birthday. they marched to the bridge where civil rights protestors were beaten and teargassed by troopers in 1965. singer-song writer john legend and rapper common performed the oscar-nominated song "glory" from the film. >> i am honored to be a part of this. i studied the civil rights movement growing up and i was inspired by dr. king. i feel humbled because i know how much they sacrificed and they did so at the risk of their lives. >> it tells the story of a three-month period in 1965 as king lead the movement for voting rights in the face of violent opposition. a happy homecoming near san francisco international airport. member of a coast guard unit

sophomore. >> i saw the poverty and the children begging on the streets. and i thought maybe i can give up my 16th birthday. >> in lieu of a party and gifts she asked family to add to her cause. to add a fifth grade classroom to a school outside ethiopia's capitol. they stop learning in fourth grade. a page helped her raise $2,000 in a month and it inspired her to shoot for $10,000 that she hopes to hand deliver this summer when she volunteers at the school. >> her family is getting involved by donating some of their art work and artifacts. she can auction them off to raise more money. >> i think living in america we have the world and i just think we should expand our minds and think about those who don't have anything.

comedian bill cosby performed in northern california and there were no major demonstrations. one woman stood in protest outside the turlock comedian theater. he got a standing ovation at the end of the soldout show. this was his first performance since dozens of women have accused him of drugging and raping them. more than a hundred people boycotted his show in denver last fight. last night. his next show is february 12th in bakersfield. to a mystery in the world of sports. the australian golfer robert allenby after what he says he went out for drinks and woke up hours later in a park, kidnapped, beaten and robbed. abc news reporter ryan owens with the dramatic story. >> robert allensby won pga tournaments and earned millions. how did the 43-year-old australian end up looking like

his hotel where he snapped the selfie and called police. tonight detectives in paradise have a lot of questions about the foggy account of that night and will only call this a second-degree robbery. ryan owens, abc news, los angeles. >> an emotional moment captured on video as a minnesota man makes it to the top of alaska's mount mckinley. that's him. he claims to be the first solo climber to reach the more than 20,000-foot summit during january. the coldest and the darkest month on north america's highest mountain. the winter winds top 100 miles an hour and the temperatures often fell below mns 60. minus 60. it took dupreist 29 days. this is his fourth attempt in as many winters. to celebrate his website said he ate a salad and macaroons and local denali beer on the way home. i argue he can do better than

a salad. let's head over to drew for a look at the forecast. >> much more than a salad. talking about weather and talking about mainly cloudy skies tonight and a mild overnight period. live doppler 7hd is dry. a live look from the golden gate bridge camera and we will show you the fog is thick in some areas. you will be waking up to a scene similar to this. even now the visibility is dropping in spots. half moon bay is less than two miles visibility. santa rosa with a mile and a quarter visibility. fairfield and concord two miles and three miles respectively and this fog will only expand and spread in the next couple hours. more dense fog on the way for your monday morning. temperature wise it is 58 in san francisco. that's one degree above our normal afternoon high you can see the mild air in place. 55 half moon bay and 54

currently in san jose. the satellite and radar will show you we have a cold front just to the north. that is supplying the cloud cover over the region right now. the problem is we have two areas of high pressure surrounding it. that's essentially eating away at any moisture we could have had in terms of rainfall with this cold front moving through. as we look at the fog cast, early tomorrow morning you notice 2:00 the fog is expanding. what will happen an easterly wind will kick in through the strait and it will enhance the fog. that means dense fog across the bay. as we get into the midmorning hours and the later afternoon the fog will begin to decrease in size. notice some patchy spots at 1:00 in the afternoon. hard to mix up the fog. mlk day of service. 7:00 in the morning temperatures in the low 50s. by noon it is a mainly cloudy sky with peeks of sunshine here and there.

by 4:00 we should burn off enough of the fog to turn to mainly sunny skies. a mixture of high clouds and stars and temperatures right around 57 degrees. the position of the earth, moon and sun is bringing us another round of king tides starting tomorrow morning. coastal flood advisory in effect around the bay and the coast for localized flooding. that means the sea water may spill on to the roadways and the trails. looking at the high tides from sausalito and oakland generally between 9:00 and 10:15 tomorrow morning and the tide is high. 6.5 feet to 7.5 feet tomorrow morning. so be aware of that. if you see the tidal flooding it may be exacerbated. 63 is the high in oakland. 66 in antioch. 65 in san jose and 65 degrees in santa rosa. here is your accu-weather seven-day forecast. the holiday tomorrow, we have a wednesday fog early on sunshine by the afternoon. partly cloudy on tuesday. i believe wednesday we will

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc news. >> good evening. in tonight's headlines, a right to rest. activists are spending the night near a powell station bart street in -- station in san francisco. it is a rally pushing for people to sleep in public. this is one of many peaceful demonstrations in the bay area this martin luther holiday weekend. oprah winfrey and other stars of "s le rm" lead people dliew -- through selma alabama. the civil rights protesters were beaten and teargassed for troopers in 1965. and home sweet home. there were kisses and hugs as members returned to air station san francisco.

312 just wrapped up a nine-month deployment. freezing rain and icy temperatures turned dangerous and deadly in the northeast tonight. the streets were slick with ice sending cars sliding out of control. at least five people have died in crashes. this pile up outside philadelphia claimed one of those lives. up to 50 vehicles were involved. with freezing temperatures overnight, there is fear that many of the roads and the highways will refreeze. in baker city, oregon this amazing city of -- story of survival. his pick up truck was sandwiched between two semis in a 26-car pile up and he had just enough room to survive. >> the more i think of all of the things that could have happened it scares me. i just thank my lucky stars i am able to come home to my wife and son. >> amazingly he only had scrapes and bruises and only needed two bandaids.

a big scare for passengers at one of the nation's largest airports when two planes nearly collided on the runway. the pilots brought one to a screeching halt when an arriving flight at new york's jfk airport got too close. marcy gonzalez has the story. >> the packed jetblue plane heading down the runway of new york's jfk airport at full speed. >> cleared for takeoff. >> then out of no where, another plane caribbean airways flight frief 26 crosses into its path. the air traffic controller reis peteedly -- controllers repeatedly calling out to the pilots. no response from the cockpit and at the last second the jetblue plane ordered to brake. >> it was crazy. the brakes went on and slammed on. >> the plane came to a screeching stop and everyone

panicked. >> these close calls increasingly common up 20% since 2011. the f.a.a. says on average there are three one-way incursings every day. just last month the wings of these two planes collided at new york's laguardia airport. it is part of one breaking off. and last year in barcelona, this dramatic scrair on the -- scare on the runway was caught on camera. >> in very, very busy airports it depends on everybody doing everything right. we haven't put any new technology in. the increase in air traffic means we have an increase in these incidents. >> that was marcy gonzalez reporting. no one was hurt on the plane and the flight did finally take off for austin a few hours later. a scare today during the delaware home of joseph biden. multiple gunshots were fired near the home from a vehicle. no one was home at the time and there is no clear indication that the home was targeted. delaware police, the secret service and the fbi are investigating.

the alameda county coroner's office identified the man shot and killed by fremont police on friday. on friday afternoon, the officers responded to fremont's harvey park after reports a man pulled a knife on two contractors and chased them around a nearby neighborhood. one officer fired a taser and a second shot the man. police say he was holding a knife with a six-inch blade. they also say he was arrested a week earlier for being under the influence of a controlled substance. san jose firefighters rescued two bay area boaters from shallow waters in the south bay. it happened in the el-viso marina. they got the call around 1:30 this afternoon. firefighters from both san jose and the menlo park fire protection district responded to the call of a stranded boat and it took them awhile to find it. they were able to make cell phone contact with the passengers and that helped. several hours later the boaters were safely back on dry land.

university of california president janet napolitano will put their differences aside when it comes to tuition and university funding. the two leaders have clashed in the past on those issues. they will ask the uc governing board to let them work together on a committee looking at ways to save money at the state funded campus and help students graduate on time. they plan to bring their proposals to the board in march. a north bay lawyer's ad is getting nationwide attention tonight and much of it is not good. why this video has sparked an on-line firestorm. >> it may seem like a victimless crime but think again. what you may not know about the sale of counterfeit designer handbags and drugs. >> i am meteorologist drew touma. we are seeing fog develop in some areas and that will greet you tomorrow morning. we will take a look at how the rest of your holiday monda
