>> i don't know what happened. i mean i -- i have no explanation for it. >> reporter: he admitted to picking out the footballs he wants before the game but says he then leaves it entirely up to the equipment managers to break them in. >> i don't want anyone touching the balls after that. i don't want anyone rubbing them, you know, putting any air in them, taking any air out. >> reporter: he claims he didn't notice a difference in the footballs during the game. >> i just assumed they were exactly the same the first half as the second half. >> reporter: but also expressed a preference for footballs at a very specific air pressure. >> i like them at the way that i like them which is at 12.5. i mean to me that's a perfect grip for the football. >> reporter: former pro bowl quarterback mark brunell was one of many associated with the nfl who are expressing doubt about brady's claims. >> and i don't believe there is an equipment manager in the nfl that would on his own initiative deflate a ball without the starting quarterback's approval. >> reporter: also surprising, brady revealing league officials

who have been investigating the claim since monday have not even spoken with him yet. >> but, you know, they may. they may. i think that's their -- i think that's obviously their choice. >> reporter: so, why not speak to the man front and center of the controversy right away? the nfl telling abc news they are not commenting. during that 30-minute press conference brady fielding some tough questions. >> is tom brady a cheater? >> i don't believe so. i mean i feel like i've always played within the rules. >> reporter: at times composed. at times defensive. >> this isn't isis. this isn't -- you know, no one is dying. but, you know, we'll get through this. >> what do you say to the fans of the patriot nation. >> what would you like me to say. >> reporter: his head coach, for 15 years bill belichick, speaking out hours earlier, also claiming he was unaware of any improprieties. >> i have never talked to any player, staff member about football air pressure.

overnight in tokyo the mother of one of the hostages made a last-minute emotional appeal to isis to spare her son. her son is a respected japanese television correspondent, kenji goto, remembered today by colleagues as a careful person. >> he's not a gung ho war journalist. he cares about humanity. >> reporter: before he went to syria, goto even left behind this video. saying only he was to blame if he was captured by isis. the other hostage is haruna yukawa, a self-described japanese adventurer who was captured by isis last year and accused then of being an american spy. if isis goes through with its threats today it will bring to seven the number of hostages killed by the purported executioner dubbed jihadi john because of his british accent. >> you now have 72 hours to pressure your government in making a wise decision. >> reporter: the same masked man is believed to have presided

over the murders of americans james foley, american steve sotloff, britain's david haynes, alan henning and american peter kassig. they know the identity of the masked man but have not made it public as they seek ways to capture or kill him. and, amy, despite all those air strikes against isis, jihadi john and his brutal gang of killers remain very much in business. >> brain, i know there is other news in the war on terror. a big blow to the united states, one of our key allies in the fight against al qaeda in turmoil. >> that's right. in yemen, the president, the prime minister and the parliament all forced to resign by a rebel group. that government has been very helpful to the u.s. in fighting al qaeda in yemen. that's the group that tried to do the underwear bomb against the u.s. and is actively plotted against the u.s. without the government's help it makes it difficult for the u.s. to counter the al qaeda efforts there. >> all right, brian ross, thank you so much. george. we're going to turn to

politics now, the race for the 2016 republican nomination kicking into gear right now with a major forum in iowa. a friendly summit between jeb bush and mitt romney in utah and another major candidate about to throw his hat into the ring. jon karl has that exclusive news from washington. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. abc news has learned that florida senator marco rubio has started taking concrete steps towards launching a presidential campaign. as one of rubio's top advisers tells me, quote, he told us to proceed as if he is running for president. i am told rubio has hired a top republican fund-raiser to serve as the finance director of a presidential campaign. he plans a big fund-raising swing through california. will miss votes in the senate all next week followed by a trip to all the early primary state, florida, iowa, new hampshire, south carolina and, of course, iowa. so, george, there had been a lot of speculation that rubio would not run because of jeb bush taking steps towards his own campaign but it sure looks like rubio is going no matter what jeb bush does. >> at least not yet. not dropping out yet.

about jeb bush, we saw that kind of remarkable meeting yesterday between jeb bush and mitt romney out in utah but it doesn't appear they reached any kind of accommodation or deal or anything like that. >> reporter: not at all. they had a meeting in utah but coming out of that meeting, no move away from what mitt romney had been telling people before the meeting which is his decision on running for president will have nothing to do with what jeb does. >> and a lot of the candidates are going to be out there in iowa this weekend for the first big forum. i know you're going to be out there, as well. a lot more with you sunday on "this week." now to ryan smith with today's other top stories. good morning. we begin with growing security at the airport. this morning the department of homeland security has revealed that the tsa seized a record number of guns inside passenger carry-ons last year, more than 2200 firearms at airports nationwide. that's a huge increase from the year before. more than 80% of the firearms were loaded. and saudi arabia, a vital u.s. ally, has a new leader

after the death of king abdullah. king salman is promising to continue his country's policies and otherwise prices rose after the news of abdullah's death but that is expected to be temporary. some breaking news here. a fire sweeping through an entire block of buildings near pittsburgh. four buildings engulfed in flames. at least one of those has collapsed and there are reports that two people may be trapped. we'll bring you more information as we get it. in new jersey, that massive fire that displaced more than 1,000 people thursday has been ruled an accident. investigators say maintenance workers using a blowtorch to repair the plumbing sparked the fire. it was still smoldering 36 hours later. and in northern california five workers injured after this highway bridge under construction suddenly collapsed. two workers were briefly trapped under the wood and concrete. fortunately that section was closed to drivers. it did come just three days after an overpass collapsed in cincinnati killing a worker and injuring a truck driver. and a violent scene caught on camera in london. take a look.

a man being hailed as a hero, see that? took him down, tackling an armed robber with a machete. police say the suspect had just robbed a jewelry store when that man on the crowded street jumped on his back struggling with the suspect. a police officer in plainclothes also responded and the suspect running away but he was later arrested in the parking garage. brave man there. and a dramatic rescue at sea. take a look at this video. five fishermen you see here were forced to jump into heavy surf after their fishing boat sank in bad weather. you see the boat on its side. look at that. the fishermen desperately trying to hold on, stay above water pushed right off that boat happening near scotland. the coast guard eventually plucked all five men from the water and a few had to be treated for hypothermia but they are okay. and finally, this stunner from the miss universe competition. take a look at what miss canada was wearing. as you know, canadians love their hockey, maybe she loves it a little too much and miss

welcome back. 7:42. and an urgent warning about a growing irs scam targeting people all over the country this tax season. the fbi is issuing an alert this morning about phony phone calls claiming you owe money. here's abc's clayton sandell with what you need to know. >> reporter: this morning, the irs warning to be on high alert for threatening phone calls like this. >> before there is an arrest warrant issued on your name with the county sheriff officer's office, i want you or your attorney to give us a call back. >> reporter: just in time for tax season.

callers pretending to be irs agents claiming you owe money and to pay up now. >> be prepared to face the legal consequences as the issue at hand is extremely serious and time sensitive. >> reporter: it's happening in all 50 states, nearly 3,000 people have already been victims, scammed out of more than $14 million. here's how it works. the scammers want you to go to a store and spend hundreds of dollars on a prepaid cash card like this. then they want the code off the back of the card. but the moment you give it to them, all that money, your money, is gone. the scammers often call from overseas disguising their numbers to look like they're really from the irs. they leave those numbers on voice mail messages demanding you call back so we did. am i in trouble with the irs? >> yes, sir. you owe $1,498.37 to the irs. i am going to proceed you to the sheriff's office and within the next hour they will be at your doorstep to handcuff you and put you behind bars.

first let's get some news from ryan smith. we begin with new concerns about the fate of those two hostages held by isis militants in syria and threatened with death. the deadline for japan to pay a $200 million ransom in exchange for the hostages passed this morning with no word from isis. the mother of one hostage issued an emotional plea overnight peg begging the captors to spare her son's life. new chaos in yemen this morning. a crucial ally in the fight against al qaeda. a peace deal between rebels and the government collapsed thursday with the president resigning. many people now wondering who is in charge. the u.s. fears a change in power could strongly benefit al qaeda. and there are still more questions than answers in that cheating scandal surrounding the new england patriots. coach bill belichick and quarterback tom brady denying they had anything to do with deflating game balls used in last sunday's game. brady says the nfl hasn't even contacted him about the scandal. meanwhile, the indianapolis colts linebacker who intercepted a brady pass sunday and

reportedly alerted referees about the ball being soft now says that's not true. d'qwell jackson now saying he noticed nothing wrong with the ball. and new figures out this morning show some americans are really struggling to pay their rent, especially in some of the fastest growing cities. the average monthly rent rose more than 15% last month in san francisco and rose 10% in denver compared to the same time last year. and this disturbing new video of a kidnapping at this atm near dallas. take a look. it shows the moment the victim was forced out of the driver's seat and into the trunk of her own car. she says the robber then drove her to various banks forcing her to withdraw cash. police hope this video will help identify him. and a fraternity at the university of michigan has been suspended after this over-the-top party at a ski resort. check this out. it cost nearly $100,000 in damage. members of six fraternities and sororities are accused of trashing hotel rooms, ripping apart carpets, breaking furniture and windows, leaving

your #shrinkage this morning on the nfl scandal going crazy. >> i think that's the appropriate thing to call it as a lifelong "seinfeld-ian." i cannot continuous lyly say deflated ball s with a straight face, i can't do it so we have to come up with something else. #shrinkage. here's the bottom line on this, george at the end of the day i think this had zero impact on the patriots winning sunday. i think it has had zero impact on their overall success in the brady and belichick era but at the end of the day the rules are in place for a reason. if they knowingly and willingly violated the rules, they deserve some sort of discipline and i'm sure there will be some sort. >> they're going to be in the super bowl. >> absolutely. i believe bill belichick yesterday more than i believed tom brady. the investigation will tell whatever it will tell. someone will get slapped but there is no way -- i would be flabbergasted, and i suppose i've been flabbergasted before but i would be flabbergasted if tom brady is not eligible to play in the super bowl.

>> it seems like the investigation is being slow-walked a bit as well. i want to talk about the novel because i love the story about how you first got the idea. >> well, i wanted to write a book that was a little -- was a first person male narrator in my voice, but i needed to come up with a character. one night i was having dinner in los angeles with a friend of a friend, seated next to someone i had never met before and never seen again and he says to me, you know, my dad was married six times. for me mother's day was always the most expensive day of the year and i thought it was a funny line but then i thought to myself, wow, that is fascinating. my dad is 82. i still talk to him literally every single day, so that couldn't be further from my experience but i thought there's my character and literally from something as random as that began this -- >> and he searches all over the country, all over the world meeting every one of his father's wives. >> what happened is he had no relationship with his father from the time he was 9. his dad married five times later. now he is an adult and his life is sort of falling apart and decides he needs once and for all find out who his dad was and he does.

he travels around the world and meets the five women his father was married to after he left his life and by doing that he figures out who his dad was and i guess who he is. >> boy, so different from your day job. how do you find the time to do this? >> listen you can only schlepp around mike golic around for so long before you come up with something that requires a little intellectual stimulation so in the mornings we do #shrinkage and in the afternoon i find myself in the library. >> thinking about another one. >> i need your help. i have two ideas. i have notes on two books. one is another one sort of like this traditional family novel. the other is a thriller in sort of the "gone girl-esque" kind of genre. so i'm going to let you choose. which one? >> you've done the family one. go for the thriller. >> all right. let's do it and get ben affleck to make a movie and scare the heck out of everybody. >> i'll be executive producer. >> i'll write on it, george stephanopoulos approved. >> fantastic. mike, i do approve. always great having you. >> great to see you. >> thanks a lot.
