60s. 41 santa rosa, 43 livermore. that's due to a north-northeast wind keeping the fog at bay. half-mile visibility quarter mile by the delta. map paw just a half-mile. santa rosa and pet aluminum doing just a little better. fog lingers through 10:00. we will see another spare the air day. this will be the 21st of the season. the worst air quality with the pollutants near the surface will be in the north bay and the santa clara valley. we will look for the fog to lift and a i allow for mostly sunny conditions, with that haze today. we are talking more upper 60s and low 70s. we will have a look at some records possible coming our way maybe today, more tomorrow in a few minutes. chris. >> lisa, thank you. 6:01 is our time. this morning san jose police are looking for the driver of a car that hit and killed a woman trying to cross the street and then took off. it was around 6:15 last night when police say a woman in her 60s was struck when crossingal

madden express way. she wasn't in the crosswalk. she was on the other side of the intersection where there isn't a crosswalk. as far as who hit the woman, police don't have much. a description, only that the car might have been a honda. ss es one resident was stunned a driver would hit somebody and then take off. >> you understand people make mistakes. but you should stop and help them. it's going to be better for your soul than to run away. >> the victim is the third pedestrian hit and killed in san jose this year. another investigation is underway this morning, this time in livermore. someone has been painting graffiti on two churches, both on the same street, police are covering the crime scene with special patrols. abc7 sergio quintana has the story. >> the graffiti has been painted over at the mormon church. one of the leaders said the campus has been tagged before so

they dealt with it pretty quickly. >> we cleaned it up and that was the end of it each time. >> the livermore police department is taking the situation very seriously, even devoting special patrols. that's because the mormon search and the next door lutheran church have been spraypainted several times in the last few days. >> some of it was derogatory and comments about the church. and also about god. >> the most offensive symbols were quickly painted over, but vandalising is investigated as a potential hate crime, which is a felony. one neighbor said he keeps an eye on the church across the street. >> we did notice i think on the night that it occurred the motion detector going on and off over there so i'm not sure if it happened then or not. >> another neighbor said it took hours to clean up some of the paint. >> they were scrubbing sidewalks and painting the walls. >> leaders at the mormon church just installed new lights to detour any future vandalism.

abc7 news. two people are in serious condition, including a child after their vehicle crashed into a muni train. it happened at 4:30 yesterday afternoon near 14th. transit authorities say the driver slammed directly into the train. sky 7hd show the vehicle's crumbled hood and the train knocked off the track. the driver and a nine-year-old passenger were rushed to the hospital. no one on the train was hurt. police want to find a robber who thereto end to blow up three different drug stores in santa clara county. the man claimed to have a bomb and demanded oxycodone. it happened last month and earlier this month. once in mountain view and twice in morgan hill. in all cases the so-called bomb turned out to be a dud. >> simply by having a bomb threat, in addition to actually seeing the device and having it there, is terrifying for the public, it's scary for the

police department, it takes up a lot of resources and time and it's dangerous. >> witnesses say the man had a raspy voice and wrinkled skin. he was wearing all black and left on a black sport type motorcycle. >> right now there's a high surf advisory in effect for the bay area coastline where large tides, rip currents and sneaker waves. it could spell trouble as people flock to the beaches to enjoy the record january warmth. temperatures today in the 60s lisa. >> yeah. in fact, we are going to see low 70s in oakland today and more 70s tomorrow. we are just starting the warmup today. the first part of your weekend. 52 degrees in san francisco. going for a high today in the upper 60s. that the one of the cooler locations. we will talk about warmer and how long this weather system lasts. see if we can get any rain in here before the month is out. that's coming up.

6:08 is our time. we are taking a live look at the golden gate bridge. these drivers getting an early started to. it's shaping up to be a warm one. a check of the forecast with lisa argen coming up in a little bit. >> developing news this morning. the military said two marines have died after their helicopter crashed during training exercise in southern california. authorities say the third marine aircraft winged chopper was carrying just the two when it went down late yesterday afternoon at the base in 29 palms. we apologize, this is the incorrect video. both marines on board died as a result of their injuries. the cause of the crash is now under investigation. >> 6:09 the time. baseball legend ernie banks, also known as mr. cub, has passed away. he was the first african-american player joining the team in 1953. he went on to become an 11-time all-star and was the national league's most valuable player twice. in 1958 and 1959.

he was inducted into the baseball hall of fame in 1977. in november of 2013 he was awarded a presidential medal of freedom. in a statement the cubs called banks the greatest cub in franchise history. it's supposed to be a place of safety, support and comfort but this morning a shelter for abused women is being accused of letting those women down. in fact, some of the women who have been there say they feel victimized again by the very s same people who were supposed to help. abc7 news reporter laura anthony has the story from the east bay. >> me and my children were being abuseed. we didn't have anywhere to go. >> shauna is a single mother. is survivor of domestic abuse who moved into an emergency shelter in contra costa county in november, 2013. it's run by an agency called stand for families free of violence. it is run by government grants and private donations. >> i know there's not good food.

that's in the emergency shelter. sometimes it's very old. old bread about two weeks old and there's no baby food for the babies over there. it's really disgusting unsanitary. no mattress covers on the mattresses. >> after a few months in the emergency shelter, she applied for and was accepted into transitional housing. that's when she said things got worse. especially after she reported to management that is staff member was stealing donated items meant for clients. ss >> i've seen verbal attacks from the staff. i've seen them yell and make accusations and lie. i've seen them kick women out with nowhere to go. >> now i'm not being abused by a man, i'm being abused by a system. >> rachel also is survivor. they are are also in the transitional program. she said she also experienced in

-- intimidation and even bullying from the staff. >> this abuse is it feels like i'm with my partner. you are going to do what i tell you to do or else. and the last place i think i would be abused is here. >> these are really serious allegations. >> gloria is stand!'s long time ceo and she was herself a bat -- a battered woman herself. >> i want know the safety and security of our clients is of utmost importance to me and i hope to every person in this organization. when we get complaints, i want you to know that we investigate them and take them very seriously. >> the shelterer is in an undisclosed location. on the emergency side there are 24 beds. on the transitional side apartments for nine families. >> it was a shelter of violence for me. >> this 66-year-old woman entered the stand! women's shelter last week. she was there for five weeks. >> they aren't educated enough. they show no compassion when you

complain about something. and i have another five or six women who could tell you their same experiences. >> i brought my kids here to keep them safe and i feel like i'm back with my abuser. it's just not right. >> all the women we spoke with said they complained to their case workers and stand management. one even wrote a letter to be published by the contra costa times and all say their concerns have been largely ignored. >> they came on the run, they came with a bag of whatever. they need help there and they aren't getting it. >> any client who has a concern with stand! and the way we provide services is extremely concerning to me. and i will continue to investigate any allegations that come our way. >> none of the women we talked with want stand! to close its doors. they know firsthand the need is too great. in contra costa county, laura anthony, abc7 news.

stand! has been in contra costa county tore more than 40 years. last year they received a $2.6 million grant to prevent domestic violence homicide. they were one of four in the country to receive that grant. 6:14 is the time. happening today the oakland city council will meet with a rare saturday session to hear from residents and community groups about the "black live matter" movement. the movement grew out of the response of several unarmed black men across the country last year. in oakland peaceful protests have turned violent with items smashed and things set on fire. some of the protests have ended up on freeways, blacking traffic. discussion begins at 1:00 this afternoon at city hall. >> bad news for bart riders who use e-cigarettes. the board has given approval to put a ban on vaping devices. it would go into effect on february 12th. that's when the board is expected to give it their final approval. they have had complaints about

people using e-cigarettes inside trains. >> authorities tracked down more than $300,000 of wine stolen from an iconic restaurant. they were taken christmas day. the bottles vary if price from several hundreds to nearly $10,000 each. yesterday in napa county investigators said they found 76 bottles at a private seller in greensboro, north carolina. but no arrests have been made. they didn't say how the wine got there or how they tracked it down. the french restaurant is currently closed for remodeling. the measles outbreak is growing. the department of health said 78 people in seven states and mexico now have the disease. among them 8 cases in alameda, san mateo and santa clara county. parents we talked to aren't taking any chances. >> not take her out into crowded areas that are enclosed buildings. try to stay local in our neighborhood and shopping there. it's a little less crowded and populated.

while you may have heard about the record warmth on the way for the weekend, and this morning we are sitting with a little fog and adding to 70-degree read wes saw yesterday in oakland. this morning we are heightth high surf advisory from the sonoma coast all the way down to the big sur and also the fog in the delta and some in the north bay. a dense fog advisory for the sacramento valley. back home pretty good visibility in san francisco. look at oakland at 56. yeah low 40s around san jose and morgan hill. but 63 with that north wind at the coast. so going for a high today near 70. 71 degrees is the forecasted high half moon bay. you were 69 yesterday. so the unseasonably warm temperatures continue throughout the bay this weekend. 41 santa rosa. some fog. napa is checking in with gray conditions, 42. the fog is in petaluma and fairfield at 45, as well as concord and livermore getting a

little bit of fog, as well. here's a look at the visibility in miles. two miles napa. 2.5 from petaluma. and three quarters in concord and a little fog in livermore. this morning this lingers through 10:00. 11:00 if starts to lift. the exploratorium camera really not much in the way of rocks with fog. in fact, you saw the 50-degree readings. so poor air quality today across the entire bay area makes for another spare the air day. records are likely in oakland today. tomorrow more widespread. and we are looking at cooler and cloudier weather next week with a weak weather system that may arrive into tuesday, bringing us a few sprinkles and better air quality. so the worst air quality with the pollutants trapped near the surface today in the north bay and the santa clara valleys. high pressure once again re-establishes itself and pushes down on the atmosphere. the beach hazard statement? well, we talk about it, but the

waves are just huge from monterey to bodega bay and they are increasing throughout the afternoon. the surf advisory, high surf advisory until 3:00 tomorrow. the possibility of rip tides. the waves were already getting really big yesterday. hopefully you are aware of that and will stay away from the coast at a save distance. high pressure to the east of us allowing for the weak offshore flow. as the temperatures rise the air quality declines throughout the bay today. more records likely tomorrow. in fact, the overnight lows tonight will be milder. and as you look at the highs today in the south bay with 70 forecasted. the average is 60. we are well above normal. even warmer tomorrow and the numbers begin to trail off on tuesday and wednesday. but still that's above average. so in terms of our long-range outlook, this takes us out ten days. there it goes. that weak system that will cloud us up and cool us off. so really right into the early february we are looking dry. 72 with a record today in oakland perhaps. san jose you are, your record

>> half past the hour. i'm chris nguyen. weather-wise we are wakeping to mild temperatures throughout the area. let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning chris. about a to degrees spread. here's a look at mt. tam with the beginning of the sunrise. from this vantage point it looks clear, but there is some fog in spots. clear at santa fe at 43. look at the coast. half moon bay with the north wind and 63 degrees. it's 50 downtown. 54 across the bay. and from our east bay hills camera, the camera is shaking. and the higher elevations we are looking at some very breezy winds. 41 petaluma with the fog. 42 napa, 43 livermore. the winds will be aiding in our quick warmup. in fact winds anywhere from 25 to 35 miles an hour on top of mt. diablo. 30 miles per hour wind gusts on top of mt. tam. you see the higher elevations,

some very breezy conditions. we will look for the winds to continue at the higher elevations, but that will allow for mixing. when we get the mixing it mixes out the fog. too bad it won't mix out the pollutants. but you can see the visibility here in miles. it is restricted around concord and fairfield. we will talk about some record warmth when we see you again in a few minutes. chris. >> lisa, thank you. new this morning, president obama spoke about middle class economics in his weekly address, saying the growing economy is helping to raise all those in the sea of recovery. he expanded on the theme he broached in this week's state of the union address. he said the rising economy is restoring the link between hard work and growing opportunity. >> middle class economics means helping workers feel more secure in constant change. make it easier to afford child care, college, paid leave, healthcare, a home and retirement. middle class economics means doing more to help americans upgrade their skills through opportunities like apprenticeships and two years of free community college.

the president added it's time to stop pretending there's nothing the country can do to help middle class families get ahead. >> president obama is changing his travel plans for the coming week to make a high profile visit to saudi arabia. they said the president will make his visit on tuesday, following a state visit to india. in saudi arabia, partly cloudy will pay respects to the late king abdullah and meet with the new king solomon. vice president biden was originally going to lead the delegation, but the white house made the change when they determined they could fit the stop into the president's travel schedule. happening today, congresswoman jackie speer is holding a free event on healthcare enrollment. speer, who represents san francisco and san mateo counties will share information and advice about the affordable care act. but it isn't a lecture. website workshops with cover california educators will also be offered, as well as free flu vaccines to everyone age six months or

older. the event begins at 9:30 at the school in daly city. 6:42 our time. vandals hit a morgan hill elementary school with messages of hate causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. we spoke to police about who may have been responsible for the crime. >> nobody should be fearful in their own neighborhood. >> a morgan hill community is on edge after vandals hit paradise valley elementary school tagging graffiti all over campus. maria lives nearby and was stunned to learn about the crime. >> even if it's just graffiti, it hurts. and it's scary, it could lead to something worse. >> reference to the "kkk", a rock band, use of marijuana and other graphic images were spraypainted all over campus. >> with the tags that were on the school property and the walls, the concrete, as well as the doors, we believe that it were juveniles based on what was tagged. >> the graffiti, first noticed

by the school's custodian, was cleaned up throughout the day. district leaders say the damage was in the thousands. >> vandalism i think speaks to crime. even though it didn't occur while students were there. we want our students feel safe at school. >> not too far away, one house was tagged and two vehicles smashed. kerry came out to find her car hit by the vandals. it's really not nice. isolates totally not funny and definitely not cool. it's not appreciated at all. >> neighbors still in disbelief. >> i was shocked and hurt that people would actually waste their time doing something like destruction like that. >> the elementary school was outfitted with surveillance video. videos have been turned over to police for processing. the california jobs picture is looking pretty good this morning. the state unemployment rate has fallen to 7% and 11,000 jobs were added last month in the bay area alone. that makes five straight years of job growth in the bay area. the best showing since the 1990s. but the picture isn't so rosy

for hundreds of dreamworks employees on the peninsula. dreamworks plans to close the animation studio it operates in redwood city, also known as pacific data images. according to the l.a. times, half the people who work there will be laid off. the others will be offered jobs in glendale. pdi dreamworks produced the "shrek" and "madagascar" movies. it's part of a cost cutting reorganization plan >> caltrans is hard at work repairing a work that was damaged last month in the storms. it connects mill valley to the marin county coast. johnathan bloom takes a look why crews are work overtime to get it fixed. >> contractors are working around the clock. >> we are working seven days a week from dawn to dusk. 16-hour days. >> all in hopes of removing the detour signs by the end of next month. they have been here since last month's big bay area storm. >> it wasn't as if this was the result of several days of rain.

this happened overnight. >> look at the damage. they call it a slipout where the dirt slips out from under the road. >> think of an oreo cookie with three quarters of the filling gone. that's what happened here. all the soils beneath the roadway washed away so we have the pavement above and nothing beneath it. >> this is the fix. engineers call these beams soldier piles because they line up and stand at attention. this sky video hd shows the massive wall they will hold up. what you are looking at is literally the tip of the iceberg. each pile sticks up about 6 feet but they go down about 20 feet where i am standing. each one of them encased in concrete. caltrans has done this before and they know they will do it again. >> anytime you have a coastal highway, especially a mountainous coastal highway, you will have a lot of problems. >> nobody knows that better than the in keepers here at pelican inn. >> we often have little washouts and occasionally a big washout. >> but none as big as this and it's been a headache. >> lots of phone calls saying are we still open?

can i still get there? do i still have a reservation? >> the guests eventually found their way here on the one remaining road but muir woods road is in bad shape. >> it's been almost ten years it's been single lane in some places. that's ten years. >> some delivery trucks can't make it and it's hardly ideal for fire trucks. that's why caltrans is in such a hurry. >> it's a lifeline for the coastal communities. >> in marin, johnathan bloom abc7 news. 6:36 is our time. if you end up driving on roads in san mateo county, be that's today and end up having too much to drink be aware law enforcement officers will be out in full force for dui stops. the police officers from the communities with help from the sheriff's deputies will combine forces to man several check points throughout the county. in the past three years, 46 people have died and 374 injured from dui collisions.

home, to the right side there's an american flag that's waving a little bit right now. again, on the right side of your screen. more drivers out on the roads this morning. our meteorologist lisa argen is here. she's tracking live copler 7hd. weather-wise, what are we looking at for the start of our saturday? >> we are looking at a couple of advisory. the reason being some of the winds you talked about are blow blocker siding the fog into the valleys where the ridge high pressure and the storm in the pacific northwest we are looking at a high surf advisory. so the highlighted area shows the area from sonoma county to big sur. here's where we have the dense fog advisory. it's sliding through the delta and settling into concord this morning. you see some of it here from this view from mt. tam. we have patchy fog but more of it is to the north. and the temperatures are very wide ranging. 43 with clear skies in the south bay. 44 in morgan hill.

half moon bay, though, with the north wind, 61 are degrees. so that's what happens on the coast when the winds blowout of the east. but then some of the fog does settle into our valleys and that's exactly what we are looking at. here's a beach view of santa cruz. going for a high today of 74 degrees. so with the high surf advisory a popular but dangerous place. look at santa rosa. dropped to 37 degrees. a 5-degree drop at least in the past hour. as the cold air is denser and it settles into the valleys of the north bay we certainly get the chilly numbers. 44 in concord. we have fog, just a quarter mile visibility there. a mile and three quarters by the delta. and the fog continuing to settle in here through petaluma and napa lasting through the next two to three hours. the exploratorium camera looks nice out there. it's chilly in our valleys but it's in the 50s here. with the poor air quality today you will notice it in the north bay, the santa clara valley, the

21st spare the air day of the season. records will be likely tomorrow. today perhaps in oakland and cooler and cloudier next week. what looked like some wet weather heading our way looks to fizzle out once again. ridge top winds are gusty. in the oakland hills up to 33 miles an hour. mt. diablo, if you are headed up for a bike ride, it will be gusty, as well as mt. tam and hayward. the winds will also work to mix out the atmosphere a little bit. it will help to mix out the fog but it will still be hazy and we will still have poor air quality, especially in the north bay and the santa clara valley. as the weather system gets closer should allow for slightly better air quality tomorrow and monday. looking at tuesday some good air quality in the central bay. high pressure to the west and east of us. this is what is strengthening. we saw it really last week and forecasts really coming into play. as how we manage to see this a week out is that the pattern has not changed. but we are looking at the systems that want to break the

ridge down, just not being able to. so with records likely tomorrow, we will be well into the 70s and the beach hazard warning through tomorrow afternoon. 9-foot waves off of half moon bay, 10-foot monterey. look at the golden gate bridge. you see the clear skies here and the records 14 to 15 degrees above averaged to tore many locations. statewide look for 81 los angeles, and gusty santa ana winds up to 75 miles an hour in some of the canyons there. 61 concord, 17 half moon bay and 68 richmond. the accuweather seven-day forecast warmer today. warmest day will be tomorrow. slightly cooler with clouds arriving on monday. tuesday and wednesday maybe a sprinkle. but cooler numbers and then by thursday and friday we reverse that trend once again. so setting our sights on february for more promising rain. >> we will need the rain. at least for today, if you have plans to head out to maybe the livermore valley for some wine tasting, it will be a nice day.
