>> in boston, look at how deep that is. wcvb, our station there, very low visibility as the snow continues to fall. let's get right to that nor'easter on the move this morning with another storm system right behind it and abc senior meteorologist rob marciano braving the snow out there tracking it all from new york's central park. rob. >> good morning, ryan. here in central park a slushy total of 3 inches. outside the city the roads are not good. the last eight hours we have seen the snow come down quickly. snow falling overnight from pennsylvania to mississippi. 5 inches in kentucky. 8 inches in pennsylvania, and in new jersey, where the snow will keep falling this morning, over 6 inches and counting. >> there's so much snow everywhere. >> reporter: the storm dumping ice and sleet in the virginias bringing down trees and power lines leaving over 10,000 in the dark, and in new york as tourists braved the winter weather in times square, fleets of snowplows and salt trucks rolling out across the northeast.

and one of the most dangerous parts of driving in winter, well, getting on and off the highway. at bridgestone's winter driving school in steamboat, colorado, instructors show me how to avoid skidding off the tight turns of interstate exit ramps. >> so that's the panic mode. >> that's panic. >> two tips here, be gentle on the pedals and keep your steering smooth. and to prevent spinning wildly around street corners, focus on one task at a time. >> while you were still braking, you're steering. you want to separate those two completely. >> so the key to this part of the lesson is don't brake and steer at the same time. >> that's one thing. >> here's another tip that's easy to remember if you're sliding in your car in the snow, don't look at what you're afraid you're about to hit. look at where you want the car to go and your instincts will hopefully take you there. millions of people will be dealing with winter driving conditions. the winter storm advisories and winter storm warnings have been extended and last through in some cases tonight. here's where the storm is and where it's going.

it will ride up the eastern seaboard and as it does it will bring in some mild ocean air. along the coastline, i-95 corridor and just outside and away from the coastline and interior sections anywhere from 6 to 10 inches potentially and we've already seen that in some spots of new jersey and could easily see that in pars of massachusetts in through northern parts of new england, as well. so it's been a pretty mild winter so far. this is one of the biggest snowstorms we've seen so far so be careful out there. we've got another one that's coming down. an alberta clipper will be rolling across chicago in through pennsylvania, philadelphia, new york, boston come sunday and monday. that one will be all snow. just a matter of how much we get wean and we'll talk more about that in the hour. >> one-two punch. thanks for those tips, as well. if you can, stay inside. but take your time. rob, we'll check in with you later in the show. now to that scandal, deflate-gate, which is casting a shadow over the super bowl. the ball is in nfl's court, so to speak, and the league finally reviewing what's been uncovered so far, but no word on when the

investigation will be completed or if it'll happen before the big game is played next sunday. and abc's linzie janis has the latest from outside the league's headquarters here in new york city. good morning, linzie. >> reporter: good morning, paula. after finding proof that 11 of 12 patriots' footballs were deflated, the nfl is promising a thorough and objective investigation, and despite the super bowl being just days away, deflate-gate is still what everyone is talking about this morning. >> deflate-gate. >> deflate-gate. >> deflate-gate. >> reporter: overnight the nfl confirming it has evidence that footballs used by the patriots in their big win against the colts last sunday were underinflated. >> touchdown. >> reporter: despite star quarterback tom brady denying his involvement on national tv. >> i have no knowledge of any wrongdoing. >> reporter: the league vowing to find out why and potentially who deflated those footballs.

in a statement writing, "nearly 40 interviews have been conducted," but according to brady, he's not one of them. >> the league has not spoken to you or contacted you? >> no, but, you know, they may. >> reporter: our sister network, espn, reporting, as of friday afternoon, none of the players had been questioned. on thursday, brady answering the question, is he a cheater? >> i don't believe so. i mean, i feel like i've always played within the rules. >> reporter: that answer now being scrutinized. >> he hesitated, and then he said, i don't think so. well, if i'm asked that question, i am absolutely not a cheater. >> reporter: a string of retired nfl quarterbacks piling on. >> i didn't believe tom brady. >> quarterbacks so particular about the footballs they throw in these football games. >> that doesn't happen unless the quarterback wants that to happen. >> reporter: brady says he did choose the balls, and officials say they passed inspection 2 hours and 15 minutes before the game. >> as the patriots take the field --

>> reporter: after that, this former chicago bears ball boy says those balls would have been watched closely. >> there are thousands of people around, fans, cameras, media members, officials. that is something that would have taken quite a bit of sneaking around to accomplish. >> reporter: now, the nfl has hired an independent investigator, as well as a special firm to help sift through video and electronic communications. in the coming days, the league will also be conducting more interviews perhaps with players, maybe even the man at the center of it all, tom brady. paula and ryan. >> all right, linzie janis from nfl headquarters. thank you very much. good chance this drags into next week, super bowl week, but the question is if the patriots didn't alter those footballs, who did? and, ryan, you and i were both in the patriots locker room this week, and that was one of the many questions we wanted answered. take a listen. >> what are people supposed to believe, that the footballs

politics now. they are off and running a parade of republicans who want to be president set to make their pitch today to influential conservatives in iowa. it's being called the unofficial start of the 2016 campaign, and abc's chief white house correspondent jon karl has a preview of the big event from des moines. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, ryan. you know, it seems virtually every republican with any kind of a national profile at all is at least thinking about running for president. this event is called the freedom summit. as you say, it really looks like the beginning of the 2016 presidential campaign. you have at least eight republicans who are thinking about running for president appearing at this event including some big names, governor scott walker and chris christie, mike huckabee, who won here back in 2008 rick perry outgoing former governor, recently former governor of texas. you also have some who are potentially being added to that list. donald trump is here. sarah palin is here. sarah palin just a couple of

days ago told abc news that she's thinking about running for president. so it's quite a show here, even though some of the very biggest names in the republican presidential field will actually not be here today. there's going to be no mitt romney. there's going to be no jeb bush, no marco rubio, no rand paul. but let me remind you, ryan, the iowa caucuses are almost exactly one year away, so there's plenty of time for those folks to get to iowa, as well. >> already getting started. and there's some controversy about the man hosting the event, right, jon? >> reporter: yes, it is hosted by steve king, congressman steve king, one of the most conservative members of the house, a republican who has a very harshly anti-immigration reform stance that many republicans worry will alienate -- would alienate hispanic voters, almost certainly would. what the iowa republicans say here is this is really about everybody coming to iowa, not necessarily endorsing steve king's views on immigration. >> all right. an early start to the 2016 race. jonathan karl, thank you.

>> love this political season. everybody throwing their name in the hat and going for it. >> that's right. >> all right. ron claiborne, you've been tracking some of the other stories we've been tracking. >> i have actually. >> all overnight, good morning to you. >> and good morning to you, paula and ryan, sara. good morning, everyone. we begin with some big last-minute changes to president obama's trip to india. the president and first lady departed for new delhi, the indian capital. mr. obama will be the first u.s. president to take part in a parade on sunday celebrating the day that india's constitution came into force. the obamas, though, will not visit the iconic taj mahal instead cutting their trip short to fly to saudi arabia to pay respects to the late king abdullah who died earlier this week. now to the urgent concern about measles. the cdc has issued a nationwide health alert urging hospitals and health clinics to be on the lookout for the disease. there are now 58 cases linked to the california measles outbreak. the disease has now spread to six states. most of those who have gotten sick have not been vaccinated and doctors are urging parents to vaccinate their young children.

adults and older children can be tested to see if they're protected. and the marine corps is investigating a deadly helicopter crash in california. it happened friday afternoon at the twentynines military base near palm springs. two marines were on board during training operation when the helicopter went down, both were killed. their identities have not yet been released. legendary hall fof famer ernie banks known as mr. cub for his 19-year career with the chicago cubs has died. banks known for his jovial personality is one of the most beloved players in the sport. he smacked 512 home runs during his career with the cubs, all of them with the cubs. his famous catchphrase, it's a great day for baseball, is played too, a reference to a doubleheader which has almost gone extinct. those words are outside on the statue outside wrigley field on the north side of chicago. ernie banks was 83 years of age, would have been 84 next week. and a florida woman is in serious condition after being attacked by a caged bear at an animal sanctuary. wildlife officials say the woman walked over to the bear

enclosure with the owner and used food to entice the bear to come over. officials say when the owner walked away, the woman then stuck her hand through the fence. the bear attacked, not surprisingly, and severely injured that woman's arm. and finally, there are cult followings for just about everything, but maybe this is a first. it seems travelers, at least some of them, are upset that the old carpeting at portland international airport in oregon is being pulled up. a bit of an odd interest. the airport is offering to sell some of the carpeting, but because of the high demand, you now have to sign up for that rare opportunity. sara, the carpet even has its own beer. it's called rogue's pbx, carpet pale ale and the carpet has its own twitter handle. >> of course. >> what is the obsession with -- >> the carpet lovers are posting selfies as you see there with their beloved all over social media. one woman saying the day the

carpet is removed will be the saddest day of her entire life. >> the life of a 17-year-old. >> pretty charmed existence. >> wait. what's the fascination with the carpet? >> i don't get it, but maybe you got to be there. >> sky blue. that's the fascination, i guess. >> i guess so. >> who knows. >> wow. >> that carpet is going to take a magic carpet ride on its way out. >> it's gone. yeah. >> ron, thank you. now caught on camera a new, frightening rash of smash and grab robberies, but this time the crooks are going where the money is, targeting atm machines, and abc's kendis gibson is here to explain. and, good morning, kendis. >> reporter: good morning, paula. it is a violent wave. just within the last 24 hours, detroit police on the hunt for two guys who wrapped a chain around an atm ripping off the top getting away with $4,000. we're seeing a lot of scenes like this sweeping the country. bold and brazen, a violent crime on the rise. thieves smashing through store windows skipping the register and making off with atms. watch as this suv slams into the

window of a tampa convenience store. within two minutes, two thieves captured on surveillance camera grabbing the loaded machine and getting away. even more brazen in houston, this smash and grab, and the store is still open for business. the crooks crash a pickup truck this time into the entrance rushing in to haul the on average 200-pound atm into their vehicle. the gas station clerk stunned. >> i couldn't move. i was dialing 911, but the phone -- my hand was shaking. >> reporter: these robberies becoming more frequent nationwide. just this week, surveillance cameras rolling during smash and grabs in dallas, detroit, des moines and houston. >> they're just going to go a short distance, they're going to rifle through it, break it open, take the cash, leave the pickup or truck behind. >> reporter: it's also lucrative. store atms can hold up to $200,000, and unlike machines built into the wall of banks, are held in place by as little as four bolts.

likely still snowing. this is not the only one we'll deal with in the next 48 hours. an alberta clipper rolling past minneapolis today through chicago early tomorrow morning, probably dumping 2, 3 inches of snowfall there and then rolling across the ohio river valley through pittsburgh and then by monday morning it will be right off the coast of the delmarva and d.c. and philly, and all snow, by the way, so it's just a matter of how long it sticks around as to how much snow d.c., philly and maybe new york gets. meanwhile, the ridge builds across the midwest and look at these numbers for rapid city, kansas city and denver and oklahoma city, temps in the 50s s and 60s and 70s in oklahoma city tuesday but i think the northeast corner will be on the chilly side. high wind warnings and advisories out for los angeles, 81 degrees. that's the warm santa ana wind that's blowing. could see winds gusting over 70 miles an hour at some of the mountain ridges and there are some of your more comfortable temperatures, 77 in san diego. that's night. 67 degrees expected in san francisco. some thunderstorms expected across parts of florida this morning and mild weather across

"gma investigates" vehicle identity theft. how you could naively end up being behind the wheel of a stolen ride. >> not good. >> yeah, but first the guy featured on the show "beverly hills pawn" says he got a funny feeling about some artwork that was brought into his shop. >> so he called the cops and it turned into a federal investigation and this morning he's revealing what raised his suspicions. abc's neal karlinsky is in our los angeles bureau with more. good morning, neal. >> reporter: paula, ryan, good morning. it sounds like something out of a movie, millions of dollars in stolen art, the fbi on the case and at the center of it, a pawnshop that, of course, is also the subject of a reality show. if there's one thing movies like "the thomas crowne affair" have taught us about art heists is that selling stolen art can be as tricky as stealing it. this morning, the fbi says it's recovered these six stolen paintings by n.c. wyeth worth an estimated $12 million and allegedly pawned by 36-year-old

oscar roberts and dean koreniti for a $100,000 loan in all of all places the middle of beverly hills at this high-end pawnshop. >> that was suspicious with the art. something was -- looked not so clean and fishy. >> reporter: this being hollywood, of course, yossi dina is no ordinary pawnshop owner. >> wait what you see what i have to show you today. >> reporter: he is the star of the reelz network show, "beverly hills pawn." >> this golden diamond necklace used to be worn by elvis presley. >> reporter: dina says the stolen paintings like every item in his shop were cataloged and reported to police. >> i took it on consignment from the people then reported to police and the fbi picked it up. it's under investigation. >> reporter: shortly after dina reported his suspicions to police, federal court documents obtained by abc news overnight reveal fbi officials arrested roberts. ♪ an aspiring rapper and reality tv show producer. >> there's a lot of money to be made in stolen art.

espn reporting that no patriots player has yet been questioned and that includes quarterback tom brady. they're taking their time. and a 19-year-old suburban denver woman who tried to go to syria to help isis militants has been sentenced to prison. shannon conley will serve four years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. and the u.s. supreme court will review the drug protocol increasingly used in executions across the country to determine whether the procedure violates the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment. this comes after an appeal filed by death row inmates in oklahoma. and finally take a look at this sketch that is a little bit sketchy at its best. rosenberg texas police officials taking a lot of heat for this composite of an armed robbery suspect. that's it there. >> wait. >> the drawing covers the man's face leaving only his eyes and mouth exposed. he was wearing that mask i guess when he committed his alleged crime.

♪ this morning a new reason to be very careful when you buy a used car. criminals using a nearly undetectable way to make stolen cars look legit. >> and you may not know it until it's way too late and it's already cost you a lot of money. abc's gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: it's the brazen suv theft that started it all. a gmc yukon denali like this one stolen right out of the dealership's lot in west palm beach over seven years ago. fast forward to just a few months ago in massachusetts.

mike chela trying to trade in his own gmc yukon denali for a new one. this is where things get strange. mike says the dealership tells him he won't get full value for his yukon because of previous accidents in its carfax report. that's news to mike. >> they come back and told me, we got a problem. he said, your car comes up and it's showing me that it's got four accidents in it. i looked at him. i said, what are you, nuts? he says, your car shows up in wisconsin and illinois. >> reporter: wisconsin? but he's in massachusetts. what's going on? carfax and the national insurance crime bureau start digging. the bureau's man on the case, senior special agent buzz brzezinski, who tells us he has a sneaky suspicion the v.i.n. number on mike's car has been cloned. remember that stolen yukon denali in west palm beach? it turns out buzz says thieves put mike's v.i.n. number on the car to mask the theft now causing all sorts of problems for mike. >> there's a whole bunch of victims involved here.

>> reporter: experts say v.i.n. cloning is a clever scheme bringing in big bucks for thieves because crooks can then sell stolen cars without a trace with new owners and car dealers none the wiser. >> we deal with about $12 million a year in cloned vehicles, and the loss for each person is roughly $30,000. >> reporter: misty, who doesn't want us to use her last name, says this stolen yukon denali ended up in her hands when she unknowingly bought this suv from a dealership in wisconsin. it shows the v.i.n. number from mike's truck, two trucks, one v.i.n. "gma investigates" on the scene when buzz uses a special computer to find the true v.i.n. number on the stolen car. >> okay, here's the true v.i.n., chief. got your pen out? it's a stolen car or truck. >> this is crazy something like this happens in a small town. >> reporter: in most cases people like misty are left holding the bag. >> after the police take the vehicle, it's your problem. you lost your car. you lost your money.
