record-breaking temperatures in the bay area in january. the warm weather drew people to the beaches potentially dangerous surf including these waves in santa cruz forced people to stay out of the water. i'm matt keller. living in the bay area, you knew we were due for a stretch of spring-like temperatures in the winter. lisa joins us live from the embarcadero. lisa it's cooler now but earlier it certainly didn't feel like january. >> reporter: that is very true, matt. you know, a lot of people took advantage of the warm weather while they could which will last through tomorrow. it comes with pretty serious downsides. they were taking in the lights

the sights and the warm temps tonight along the embarcadero. >> i don't know if this has anything to do with global warming or climate change, but i'll sure enjoy it. >> reporter: it wasn't hard to find people in shorts and a t-shirt in pacifica today where it was 70 degrees. typically this time of the year it's in the 50s here. >> it's beautiful. especially since there's no fog down on the coast. >> reporter: below the surface, potential for problems is brewing. a surf advisory in effect until tomorrow afternoon. shark park is at risk for sneaker waves. the coast guard was out keeping an eye on things at ocean beach. the advisory was out. surfers were still all in. >> we get maybe five to ten days like this in a surf season each year. definitely have to try to take advantage of it when it's here.

>> reporter: in oakland, people flocked to lake merrick to enjoy the sun and heat. >> it's nice to enjoy the weather especially since we've had all that rain. >> reporter: but the state isn't in the clear. we're still in a drought. and the rain is necessary for the air quality as well. this is another spare the air weekend. >> it's like a dome over the area. it's capping all the air in our region. so we don't get the normal breezes that blow out the pollution. >> reporter: that means anyone caught burning wood will be fined. patrols will be out all weekend looking for violators. answer 7 news. many people may be enjoying the weather, but the lack of rain is hurting california farmers. the water source is quickly running out. experts say 2014 was bad, but

2015 is looking even worse. 17,000 farm workers lost their jobs last year. >> less money for them for this time of the year. we had no choice. we have to do it to cover the costs for the electric. >> this is the driest california's been in january in five years. and the foreseeable future doesn't look too promising for a lot of rain. meteorologist drew tuma is here for a first check on weather and live doppler 7 hd. >> the big story is definitely the warm temperatures this weekend and the high surf. anywhere from 25 feet high, thanks to the storm churning in the gulf of alaska. right around 15 feet. there's cause for concern along our coastal communities for the high surf advisory until tomorrow afternoon for waves potentially up to the 15-feet height.

of course with the seas churning we'll have strong rip currents at our beaches through sunday afternoon. a lot of spots well above normal. ten degrees in some locations. oakland setting a new record. even warmer air if you can believe that is said to arrive on sunday. we'll detail all the numbers in the full accuweather forecast in a few minutes. keep track of the warm-up in your neighborhood using the abc 7 weather app. we have it at the abc7news.com/apps. rare saturday session by the oakland city council. the reason, to discuss recent protests between the community and police. abc 7 news reporter joins us from the newsroom with more. >> this was a city council meeting that didn't pass any legislation and had no agenda except to allow a public forum for residents and city officials to talk. at the center of the conversation, the difficult relationship between some oakland communities and the

police department. something the police chief ak acknowledged but said the department had changed. >> it's not the oakland police department of the 1960s. not the oakland police department that i joined over 20 years ago. not even the oakland police department of occupy oakland. >> reporter: meetings often have unique moments. at this one, there were two. the first centered around the black friday 14. they chained themselves together in protest on a platform the day after thanksgiving, stopping service for two hours. and are now facing charges. council member brooks tried to coerce robert raburn to sign a pledge asking that the charges be dropped. >> and that no community service be set. >> at this time i cannot make that commitment. >> reporter: the second moment came as carissa lewis spoke. she is one of the 14 people who were arrested by b.a.r.t. police

during that black friday protest. she also organized an early-morning demonstration outside mayor libby shaft's house this week. >> we weren't able to meet with her, we chose to wake her up. >> reporter: the mayor closed out the session -- >> i want to appreciate that our police of chief acknowledged the wrong, the harm and the hurt that has been done to this community by bad police actions. >> reporter: she had been in washington, d.c., this week and returned for this meeting. abc 7 news. the supplier of the steel rod that cracked on the bay bridge in 2013 never told cal trans the same thing happened when nearlily identical rods were in a washington state bridge in 2009. a review released by bridge officials states the dyson corporation knew of the rod problems six months after shipping 96 of them to california in 2008.

32 of those rods sat in rainwater for five years, exposing them to corrosive hydrogen. they snapped after being cinched down in 2013. the construction failure cost toll payers $45 million. dyson corporation has not responded to requests for comment. both sides of the abortion debate clashed in san francisco today. 42 years after the roe versus wade decision making abortion legal, both sides met on market street. this was at the end of an anti-abortion rally in march. an estimated 50,000 people pushing for the procedure to be outlawed came to san francisco from all over the country. >> they want to tell society there are choices other abortion for pregnancies that are unexpected or unplanned. >> they're trying to take away a reproductive right for women. it's oppressive and doesn't make any sense to me.

>> everything remained peaceful today. in washington the house of representatives just recently passed a bill to ban all taxpayer money for abortions. republicans also proposed a bill that would mandate ultrasounds for women seeking abortions. and ban late-term abortions was scrapped for lack of support. napa county has reported its first flu related death of the season. the fifth death linked to the flu in the bay area. the others have been in san francisco, san mateo county. experts say it's a sign of an increasingly active flu season. residents are advised to get flu shots, wash your hands, avoid touching your eyes nose and mouth. still to come, the potential roadblock removed when it comes to uber lift and other ride-sharing services. the about-face by state officials. residents of one san francisco neighborhood shut down a late-night construction project that was keeping them

. about-face by the dmv. officials retracted their order that uber, lift and side car drivers must obtain commercial license plates. "san francisco chronicle" reports criticism are saying the dmv was stifling innovation. impeding the growth of the ride sharing services which rely on quickly hiring new drivers.

public and assembly members threatened legislation if the dmv did not reconsider its stance before february 17th. the dmv is now doing just that. people who live in a neighborhood in san francisco can sleep easier tonight. construction has stopped for now after angry neighbors complained. they were working friday saturday and sunday nights for the rail line. a muni spokesperson said they're doing everything they can to get the issue resolved and hope to get back to work next weekend. a hearing on the permit is set for march 18th. until then, any nighttime work must be done quietly. who can forget back kids. 25,000 people packed the streets of san francisco in 2013 to cheer on the 5-year-old boy recovering from leukemia. he had been granted a wish to become a superhero for a day. the back kid had the world premiere in utah.

easterly wind that will help mix up the atmosphere and get this fox out of here early tomorrow morning. by the afternoon, lots of sunshine on the way for the region. satellite radar will show you the theme that has been january. storms deflected well to the north. thank the two areas of high pressure right over us deflecting any precipitation from moving in. warm temperatures on the agenda for monday. 2:00 tomorrow afternoon a lot of 70s on the board. even oakland. once again it looks like oakland and even san jose could break some records into sunday afternoon. sunday records and where they stand. tomorrow oakland forecasting a high of 74 by the afternoon. the old record set back a year ago in 2014. san jose and gilroy like lg breaking records as well. napa, you look safe. your record 83 degrees. not getting near that. another spare the air day.

poor air quality will be forecast for the north bay. for sunday no wood burning is allowed. overnight lows tonight 40 in concord, 45 overnight in oakland, dropping to 48 in san francisco, 38 in santa rosa, 39 in san jose. tomorrow afternoon highs, mild, after the fog burns off. we'll have the haze once again. thanks to the high pressure not giving us an active wind. 69 in san francisco. high 75 the high in clear lake. 67 in vallejo. 74 in san jose. 69 we go in fairfield. the record warmth here on sunday by monday a few high clouds move in. temperatures start to go down just a bit. not as warm. but you still see we're in the 70s. on tuesday there is a slight chance of some rain. a storm will be brushing by us to the east. there could be sprinkles. the best chance would really be in the south bay. unfortunately nothing widespread with that system.

good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm matt keller. in tonight's headlines, an estimated 50,000 people marched through san francisco today calling for an end to abortion. the walk for life west coast comes 42 years after the supreme court roe versus wade decision. an extremely rare oakland city council session on a saturday discussed recent tensions between police and the community. the mayor and police chief were there. in an effort to get charges dropped against the black friday 14. communication could have prevented a $45 million problem on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. "san francisco chronicle" reports the supplier of the rods that cracked knew that the same

type of rods had cracked on a bridge in washington state. but did not tell cal trans about the problem. a new video released today purports to show one of two japanese men held by the islamic state group has been killed. the hostage's father said deep in his heart hopes the news is not true. but japan says the video is likely true. >> reporter: time may have run out for one of two hostages seen here. a new video out saturday purportedly from isis claims the terror group decapitated the man. japan's prime minister headed to an emergency meeting calling the news development an outrageous and unforgivable act. his friend in disbelief still holding out hope. >> translator: i can't stop shaking. i hope this news is incorrect. >> reporter: abc news has not yet confirmed the authenticity of the video, which shows a

fbi law enforcement officials tonight are investigating online bomb threats on two planes that safely landed in atlanta. police bomb and dog teams found no explosive devices on either aircraft. authorities say the twitter threats targeted two flights. two f-16 fighter jets shadowed the airplanes until they land the at the airport. president obama is in india to talk climate change, defense and economics. new video of the president's arrival in new delhi about an hour ago. india's prime minister invited him. president obama is the first u.s. president asked to attend a republic day parade celebration of india's democracy. president obama will go to saudi arabia on tuesday to pay his respects following the death of king abdullah. copies of the latest issues of "charlie hebdo" hit the stands in san francisco.

smoke signals on polk street had 100 copies this morning. and by closing time were down to 40. the newspaper features an image of muhammad similar to earlier cartoons by the french newspaper that made it a target of attack. the january 7th gunman killed 12 people at the satirical newspaper in paris. california state judges cannot serve as leaders in the boy scouts. that order comes from the california supreme court. because the group discriminates against gay leaders. openly gay boys can't participate in the scouts, but gay and lesbians cannot serve as leaders. judges have one year to comply with the new rule. new details tonight involving san francisco's castro district recently hit with a string of arson fires. residents planned a neighborhood watch meeting tomorrow afternoon. investigators have arrested david diaz accused of setting

fire to a beauty salon there last saturday. that salon is located in the same building where he lives. it's also near two other arson fires set the following monday. in southern california powerful santa ana winds toppled trees and power poles leaving tens of thousands of people without electricity. some gusts topping 80 miles an hour overturned big rigs and blew dust onto the freeways and knocked a large tree into the kitchen in van nuys. take a look at this. a man in san diego had to climb over boulders to safety after a big wave knocked him off the cliff and into the ocean. lifeguards responded quickly and pulled him to safety. the rescue was one of several today as the strong swell made for waves nearly ten feet high along the coast. wind also blew two kayakers out to sea. lifeguards helped them paddle

space x settled a lawsuit against the u.s. air force. san francisco billionaire's company dropped the suit on friday. he accused the air force of not giving space x a fair chance to win a contract to launch military satellites. space x needs to complete certain certifications to receive a government contract. the government promised to work with space x on the certifications moving forward. two dozen republican politicians gathered for the iowa freedom summit. nearly half are considering a run for the white house. that's what mike huckabee revealed during a speech. he criticized the obama administration saying it punishes productivity and rewards reckless irresponsibility. >> if you're going to have some sausage, you've got to kill some pigs. and folks, there are a lot of people in america who want the sausage, they just don't want to kill any pigs.

that means breakers washing over large rocks. rip currents being strong along the beaches for sunday. the warmer air also means we're having another spare the air day. the high pressure acting like a lid on top of our atmosphere keeping air quality especially poor in the north bay. that means tomorrow no wood burning in effect once again. highs on sunday a storm brewing right now in the ohio river valley on sunday. what's going to actually happen with this storm, it's going to turn up the east coast and actually turn into what looks like a pretty blockbuster storm. a blizzard in parts of new york city and boston and out to the canadian maritimes by monday afternoon. we'll keep our eye on that. otherwise, quiet across the western half of the united states. phoenix getting up to 80 degrees. equally warm tomorrow on sunday with sunshine on the way in l.a. 71 the high in chico. 57 in tahoe. and yosemite a high tomorrow of about 64 degrees. highs for sunday in the bay

use. this week quarterback richard sherman was asked if he ever caught deflated footballs. >> i have to go back to my collection and check them now. to see if there's pounds missing or anything like that. no, i've never heard of that. whatever they did, the risk/reward was greater. they were trying to suspend marshawn for gold shoes. that really affects the game. that really affects the game. then you've got balls being deflated, and that's the issue. while we're on the subject of super bowls, on this day 33 years ago, the niners won their first super bowl title in detroit. as we beat the bengals 26-21. the first of five lombardi trophies. there's nothing like the first time you do anything. a bellhop arrived at our hotel, trying to lighten the mood for us firsttimers. that's right.
