footballs before bringing them to the field. will a locker room attendant take the fall. ♪ >> american idol bombshell. the winner wants to be gone, gone gone from his deal. why phillip phillip is looking for a new home. good morning, america. to our viewers out there on the west coast. the blizzard still hitting some areas hard this morning moving further east. take a look at boston right now. a foot of snow there and it's still snowing. more than two feet in parts of new england and in some parts of new york as well. >> they have got a ways to go out east. new york and new jersey starting to come back to life right here. that's the grand central earlier this morning in penn station as well. they were closed down. but it turns out we did not get hit as hard as some people

thought we were. did officials overreact and is it better to be safe than sorry. >> absolutely. they're going to get criticized one way or the other. our extreme team is covering all the angles on this massive storm. ginger you walked to work this morning. a go pro cameras on your head. more like a ghost town didn't it. >> yeah you know i wasn't going to walk to work and not show you. it was incredible. that was the remarkable part. the shut down of the city. the roads are open. the first of the cars getting on through and it's not perfect but about eight inches and more to come. certainly less than so many forecasts had. we were on the conserveative side and still off by a few inches. let me take you to connecticut. that's a picture from parts of connecticut, massachusetts. more than two feet fallen and it's the coastal flooding. it's the wind and some of the totals that are coming up you said boston had a foot.

look at long island. 25 inches. central and eastern. now there are still blizzard warnings because the wind has not yet stopped. you will see blowing snow and drifts. even some holding people in in coastal new england. a quick look at how much more to expect. only a couple more inches anywhere in the gray. you go east into parts of central massachusetts look wooster who has 25. you'll see more. air travel and all of that in new england still going to be an issue and that is exactly where we find our rob marciano with the extreme team getting blasted still. rob. >> reporter: definitely getting blasted ginger. amazing the difference. 100, 150 miles makes. boston full-on blizzard mode. 15 inches and that number is still going up. obviously with the plows and drifts the number will go higher. there's been little life here in boston. some people had to go to work. but for the most part this city is shut down not only from snow but from power outages and coastal flooding.

we had to move our truck because the water came up and out of boston harbor and flooded the roadway. a number of problems as the storm came roaring in last night. overnight, loud and ferocious that massive winter storm making its presence felt. newport, rhode island wind there gusting at more than 60 miles per hour. just south of boston, snow whipping. this nasa image showing the thick layer of white engulfing the east coast with states of emergencies declared in seven states. many governments and schools close today as officials prepared for the worst. >> extreme snow fall. >> it should not be taken lightly. >> please remain home and off the roads. >> reporter: this is what the final scramble looked like in new york city. drives working to beat the clock as the snow rolled in. crowded roads filled with rush hour commuters. soon going from this to this.

times square just outside our studios virtually empty. some battling the blizzard by bicycle including this delivery guy. others on skis. many people shoveling. others plowing to keep up with the falling snow. >> just trying to stay ahead of the storm, you know. >> reporter: as convoys of the more than 1,800 snowplows marched down the long island express expressway. new jersey, road crews struggling to keep the streets clear. boston the streets deserted overnight. snow swirling in this new england town where the fear is not just the snow but the massive flooding. >> winds at 40 miles an hour. visibility down to near zero. that is a definition of a blizzard. dangerous windchills below zero and power outages 10,000. that number expected to go up. some people need the

electricity. so this is life-threatening cold. hopefully that number doesn't go up. it is brutal and blizzard warnings in effect here in eastern massachusetts. >> we can see how hard the wind the blowing. david wright farther east and flooding along the coast. nantucket without power. >> reporter: george i can remember the blizzard of '77 when i was a kid. this is as bad as any conditions i have ever seen. i'm knee deep in the snow. the drifts are up to my chest. and if you look out in this direction, that's the atlantic ocean 20 yards away. all you see is a wall of white. about 40 minute ferry ride. and the island completely without power and some more exposed coastal communities have purposely cut off the power concerned down power lines could cause fires and the fire crews

may not be able to get there. robin. >> thank you. the eastern part of long island also being pounded right now. the snow still falling this morning. the roads completely shut down. highways abandoned and abc is in farmingville new york with the latest on the situation. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, we're going to need a bigger shovel. take a look at all this snow. you heard ginger said more than two feet on the ground here in long island. folks waking up this morning walking out into this. a winter wonderland. the white stuff everywhere. as we look up showing no signs of slowing down overnight a grueling commute. millions racing home before the height of the storm and before sweeping travel bans went into effect by fight states turning some of the nation's busiest cities into ghost towns. here in long island 15 inches of snow and whipping winds.

the long island expressway completely shut down looking like a desert of snow overnight i rode along with the police. >> can we make it up there? >> reporter: who are making sure drivers were off the roads. look closely. just before the 11:00 ban, this car nearly spinning out of the control. >> one of the reasons why the roads are closed is because visibility is almost zero. >> this pickup pulled from a ditch after sliding off the road. >> the snow is just growing. it's getting worse and worse as the hours go on which really is affecting us is the wind. it's just ripping at us. take a look at this light. it's coming in sideways and down and anywhere you look it's a complete whiteout. >> emergency management officials emphasizing stay home and off the roads. >> reporter: most people listen. but unfortunately one person died. a teenager out sled with friends

lost control of his sled and slammed into a light pole. conditions dangerous, george. >> they are. things coming back to life in new york right now. the roads open again after being abandoned overnight. subways starting up as well. gio benitez is joining us from the upper west side. people surprised how little snow there was. >> reporter: good morning. take a look. we are beginning to see first signs of life. this is broadway and one of the busiest roads in all of new york city. we're seeing one car here and there. still so empty. subways. look at that. this is where people constantly going underground. nobody is really using it right now because you can't and so these are going to be opening up very, very soon. i want to take a look at these incredible images from grand central and penn station. they just show how empty everything has been here in new york city. really one of the things that's going to be happening is that a

lot of people might be criticizing new york city for overreacting. i was with emergency management officials yesterday, they say they were doing this to make sure everyone was off the roads. they didn't want to see people stranded out there. they said they were relying on national weather service forecast. so clearly there's going to be business hurt here. not a lot of money lost in damage but certainly in lost business george. >> thanks. airports on the east coast at a standstill. nearly 5,000 flights cancelled today. abc's david kerley at reagan national airport. >> reporter: good morning, george. quiet here and up the east coast. a quarter million passengers across the country all the way to the west coast have been touched by this storm. this morning the big five some of the busiest airports are ghost towns except for passengers who were stuck. a virgin atlantic flight couldn't take off and with new

york's travel ban passengers had nowhere to go at jfk but to the floor to get some sleep. in philadelphia cots for those stuck. the lucky ones made it to hotels. >> if this pushes beyond me getting on a flight thursday morning, i'll not be happy then. >> reporter: this live map usually filled with planes has a whole over the northeast. the blizzard cancellations from those airports rippling across the country leaving passengers stranded. >> i would like to be back in new york. i know there's a blizzard but i want to go home. >> reporter: more than 4,000 flights cancel and 250,000 passengers affected. >> i'm exhausted and annoyed. i just want to go home period. i want to go home. >> reporter: in the early hours of the storm we had a camera on the tarmac at new york's laguardia airport as they removed snow. no break for the trains amtrak

shut down between new york and boston. monday commuters posted pictures of passengers scrambling to board the last train out of boston. train service also restricted from new york down here to washington to virginia. the storm didn't dump as much snow and the airline can start moving aircraft maybe earlier than expect and expect delays and cancellations into tomorrow. robin. >> thank you. george. >> we're joined by the mayor of boston marty walsh. turns out boston probably got hit hardest of all. how is it going so far. >> so far so good. we have had about 11 inches of snow overnight and expecting the largest snowfall to be hitting us this morning, one to three inches per hour until tonight and the winds are picking up here in the city of boston. >> you guys are pretty used to this. what's the biggest challenge right now? >> keeping the main arteries open and staying ahead of the

storm. so far people been in compliance. they haven't been listening to the parking ban that we have and people haven't been on the roads yet. i think when people get up this morning thinking they're going to work and when they look outside their window they're going to realize they're not going anywhere fast today. >> you shut down schools. do you think it would be back to normal thursday. >> i'm hoping. with the work we need to get done to clear the roadways tomorrow. that's our anticipation that we're going to be open thursday right now. as the day goes on we'll assess better later on. >> down here in new york and other parts we didn't get hit as hard as some people feared. you have taken some pretty extreme measures shutting down the roads and train stations and airports. what do you say too people who might think that's overreaction? >> you're better off safe than sorry. people are concerned saying often times we get all worked up over the weather and the

forecasters say it's going to be bad and sometimes we don't get a bad snow storm. better off being prepared because in boston we're being hit hard if you didn't taking the precautions yesterday that we took we would be in a worse situation than we have today. better safe than sorry. you can't really judge -- you can't tell mother nature what to do or how to do it. we have no control over that situation. >> well good luck handling the rest of it. thanks for joining us this morning mayor. >> thank you. >> a storm like this is not just dangerous for people driving on the roads. these are hazards for people out shoveling and playing in the snow. remember the report about the teenager killed sledding on long island. abc's dr. richard besser is here what we can do to stay safe. what do you do? >> you have to be careful the wind and cold can add up to frostbite and hypo they weria. the air between the layers is going to provide insulation.

fabrics fabrics, wool is much better than cotton. if the layers get wet change them out because it will pull away the pete. if your body shifs, get inside. >> thankfully the power outages haven't been widespread. but if you lose power? >> if you have a baby or someone elderly you want to think about getting them to a warm place. if you're planning to heat your house with a generator. you have to be careful so you don't suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning and don't use it in your basement garage or near an open window because you won't know it and you can get poisoned. >> folks are eager to get outside and start shoveling and getting things cleared and that's really got to be cautious about that. >> you do especially with a heart disease and then you want to push that snow. don't lift it so you can protect your back. >> i know you were busy yesterday on twitter. a lot of questions. >> i'll be there all morning

today. >> what are they asking you? >> some about their pets. how to keep them safe in the cold. what kind of things to where. whatever you have i'll be answer. >> thanks so much. amy, with the other top stories. good morning, amy. >> and we begin with a brazen heist overnight in san francisco. three men ramming an suv and had assault weapons and held up a security guard before escaping leaving the crashed suv inside the bank. police believe the men were in a white ford tour raus. and terrifying moments at a council meeting. two police officers shot outside the meeting and the gunsfier caught on tape. at least five gunshots were

heard. you see the counselor on the far left. the two officers shot returned fire killing the gunman. the motive for the attack remains unclear and the two officers are recovering. this morning russia is releasing a new threat after what's called a russian spy ring. one man under arrest accused as posting as a banker in new york and the two suspects left the country. russia demanding the alleged spy be released warning any dispute could aggravate u.s./russian relations. and gunmen wearing bullet proof vesting stormed the capitol of tripoli setting off a car bomb. five foreigners have been killed. and mexico a volcano of fire and clouds of smoke with another eruption monday it is one of mexico's active volcanos. no injuries have been reported. finally, fear no longer my

good morning america. you're looking live right now at the storm as it hits new england. our extreme weather team up and down the east coast this morning. also right now one of the former vanderbilt football players accused of sexual assault taking the stand and apologizing to the alleged victim. blaming the patriots locker room attendant. for tampering with the footballs days before the super bowl. there would be some kind of convenient person to blame. >> wasn't that part of an "snl" skit? >> good morning again. a lot to get to. of course, this storm hitting the entire east coast, worst right now up in boston and parts east. >> also a foot of snow already in boston. heavy winds more than 50 miles

an hour there this morning. we'll go to go to abc's rob marciano who is there and all morning long. good morning. rob. >> reporter: robin, the blizzard continues. snow blowing sideways and piling up and coming down at about one to two inches per hour. you have got plows creating mounds and then you have got the snow drifts piling up. the city for the most part is shut down. although we have seen people going to work oddly enough. power has been knocked out in some spots. we have had winds gusting in some cases over hurricane strike and that is doing damage and expected to continue throughout the afternoon today as is this snow. so far about 15, 16 inches. we'll likely see over 20 inches. much more than new york. you have to be thankful for that. >> now to dramatic and emotional testimony in the trial of the two former vanderbilt university

football players accused of sexually assaulting a female student. one of the defendants taking the stand with his alleged victim in the courtroom. abc's ryan smith is there with the latest. >> reporter: for two weeks prosecutors laid out their case. monday he told his side of the story saying his recollection was foggy but making a crucial admission that could cost him his freedom. >> do you take responsibility for your conduct? >> after seeing the footage, i do. it was me. >> reporter: testifying in his own defense monday former vander belt football player cory baity stunned the courtroom admitting he is in a cell phone video showing him sexually assaulting a classmate in 2013.

en attempting to apologize from the stand. >> reporter: they are charged with aggravated rape and sexual battery. he also testified he was too drunk to remember the incident. claiming he blacked out africaans assuming between 14 and 22 drinks that night. >> what if any recollection today do you have of that event. >> none at all. >> saying he didn't realize what he had done until the next morning finding graphic pictures on his phone on his way to church. >> i was horrified. i didn't know. i didn't know how they got there. i immediately deleted them. >> a lot of things you don't recall. blame it on the alcohol, correct? >> reporter: the victim a former neuroscience major and dance team member overcome with emotion when those pick churches and cell phone video were shown in court. she says she has no recollection of the actual attack. testifying last week that she had been out drinking that night with vand den berg who she had

been seen with before passing out. >> i remember waking up in an up familiar room. >> both have pleaded not guilty. >> reporter: the attorney is expected to make closing argumenting and ings today. if both defendants are convicted. >> they face decades in prison. robin. >> thank you. >> moving to the security concerns at the white house. after a drone crashed into the south lawn early monday. the owner says it was an accident but this comes after a series of major breaches. abc in washington with the latest. >> we now know what caused the white house scare. a government employee says it was his drone and a innocent mistake but the investigation continues. all the commotion was over this.

we're back now at 7:44 with that incredible footage of a small plane going down hundreds of miles from an airport splashing in the middle of the pacific all caught on camera and this morning we're hearing from the lucky pilot. abc's clayton sandell has the story. >> reporter: this morning, the harrowing story behind one of the most dramatic splash landings ever, 25-year-old pilot lou morton was flying sunday from tracy, california, all the way to maui, but he radios to say there is a problem getting gas to the plane's engine and he's going down over water, 250 miles short of the nearest airport. as the engine quits morton deploys an emergency parachute and hangs on. a coast guard crew flying above captures it all. the plane hits the water, quickly flipping and sinking, morton escapes but barely jumping into a life raft. a cruise ship alerted by the coast guard is nearby and comes to the rescue. >> have you handled other emergencies like this before?
