they don't realize something tragic happened here. >> live on the corner. you could hear them go fast all the time. >> reporter: melissa and her neighbors say yerba buena road has become a raceway. 24-year-old attorney general pablo was killed as cars came speeding down the hill. a memorial of flowers and candles marks the spot where she was jogging. >> these didn't deserve this. she went out for a jog like every family. >> reporter: the family is in shock and mourning. this is pablo's photo. she worked at a staff agency. her family was looking forward to celebrating her 25th birthday next month. >> i've had almost 150 people here the last couple of hours to show their respects. she was a well-known person in this community. people loved her, people loved her smile. she was a joyful person. she didn't deserve this at all. >> reporter: the drivers of the nissan and bmw that killed pablo are

gabriellies parze iesesperaza and mann well avila. there other another fatal accident here two years ago. the accidents are eerily similar. >> there is no vet. you can't bring this young girl back. you can't bring my daughter back. it's a split-second choice and decision on their part. they should have to pay the full consequence consequences. >> reporter: speeding continues. an officer issued seven tickets in a half-hour for as high as 59 miles per hour. the speed limit is 40. >> for those guys who did this i hope you go to sleep at night knowing that you guys killed an innocent person. but we'll still pay for your family, as well. >> reporter: in san jose, abc7 news. at least three cars were hit by a driver going the wrong way on a busy walnut creek street. it happened on south main near

newall this afternoon. police are still searching for the driver. no one was seriously injured. meantime san francisco police are looking for the thieves responsible for a smash-and-grab robbery at the wells fargo museum on montgomery. three masked men robbed a stolen suv -- rammed rather a stolen suv through the museum entrance this morning. police say one of the men held a security guard at gunpoint while the other stole historic gold nuggets from a display case. they escaped in a van heading toward the bay bridge. >> this is a great displea, a historical treasure -- display a historical treasure. i hate what they did here today. >> the stage coach on display was not damaged. the gold nuggets were part of the display. with the current price of gold at $1,300 an ounce. crews are on the scene of an attic fire in san francisco. you see the smoke from the fire around 3:30 from our tower cam. this is a closer look at the scene in the sunset district from sky 7 hd.

began after 3:00 in a home on 36th near lauten street. no injuries have been reported. a disgraced california highway patrol pleaded no contest today in contra costa county. former officer sean harrington admitted to stealing racy cell phone photos from what women and forwarding them to his own phone and others'. laura anthony is live in martinez. >> reporter: sean harrington will not go to jail, but he will have a felony conviction, two of them on his record. that's a circumstance that will keep him out of law enforcement. he will also as part of his plea agreement, have to counsel others on how to avoid committing crimes like his. >> i fully cooperate with investigators and have done everything asked of me to try to make this right. >> reporter: moments after pleading no contest to two felony counts of computer theft, former dublin chp officer sean harrington read a prepared statement. >> i apologize to my family, my wife, my friends.

and i apologize to officers everywhere, and especially to the two women involved. i'm trying to put this behind me and move forward. i hope now everyone else can, too. >> reporter: the 35-year-old admits he stole semi nude photos from the cell phones of two female dui arrestees and passed them to two other chp officers. with his plea, harrington was sentenced to three years probation but no jail time. >> i think he knows and what i said on representing him is the conduct was serious. it was impulsive and immature. >> reporter: as part of his sentence, harrington must attend and participate as a speaker in community violence solutions class. >> which include not only educating himself about the crime he committed but helping to educate others about the crime he committed which i think is a lot better sentence than a short-term jail stay. >> reporter: harrington of charged in two cases. prosecutors say he admitted

stealing photos on four to six occasions in the past few years. in martinez laura anthony, abc7 news. the san francisco district attorney today dropped charges against a teenager accused of stabbing a 13-year-old to death. rashawn williams of killed september 2nd at a store at 2 th and -- 26th and folsom. footage proved the former suspect did not stab williams. we'll have more live at 5:00 with the key surveillance video. the northeast blizzard had paralyzed massachusetts and left many across the northeast without power. the boston area has more than a foot and a half of snow. snowplows around new england have been struggling to keep up. abc has the latest now on this blizzard. >> reporter: in this flooded frozen town in massachusetts, evidence of the blizzard's brutal impact. >> marshfield, massachusetts, this morning at high tide, an

80-foot section of the sea wall crumbled here. you see how ocean street now is a river. >> reporter: other pars of the state coping with power outages. some places getting nearly three feet of snow. in boston and elsewhere in new england, the effects are still being felt. >> the drifting continues to be an issue. the blowing. there are drifts now as high as four five, six feet. in many places. >> reporter: while parts of long island, new york, are buried, too -- >> here in suffolk county, we got the hammered. it's still coming down. >> reporter: for a lot of areas this storm was nothing compared to what was expected. one national weather service meteorologist tweeting "you made a lot of tough decisions expecting us to get it right and we didn't. once again, i'm sorry." there were unprecedented precautions taken in new york city where first the first time ever the mass transit system was shut down for snow leave something stranded. today -- subways and buses are running again. >> see you later.

>> reporter: the tunnels, and roads are back open. >> we obviously missed the worst of the storm which is a blessing for new york city. >> reporter: and here in central park, you can see people taking full advantage of that so-called blessing. the mayor, meanwhile, not apologizing, saying he has no regrets about being so cautious. marcy gonzalez, abc news, new york. and this is a photo of the storm from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration. from this view you can see how massive it was. the photo shows the blizzard near peak intensity about 2:00 this morning. for anyone flying, the storm created a real hassle. check out the flight status board at san francisco national airport. 85 flights were canceled there today. most of those were scheduled to come in from new york newark boston, and philadelphia. nationwide there were nearly 5,000 flights canceled today. airlines are hoping to resume flying into those airports by this evening as the storm eases up. travelers are being urged to

check with their airline for the latest update. santa clara county health officials have confirmed the first flu-related death of the season. the victim was under 65 and did not have any medical risks that could have been complicated by the flu. health officials said the victim did not get the season's flu vaccine. this is the bay area's sixth flu death all in the last three weeks. here's something that doesn't happen very often -- doctors on strike. today about 120 physicians fro all ten university of california student health centers walked you off the job. at u.c. berkeley, many doctors picketed with their white coats on. they're asking for better staffing especially for hentmental health services for students. >> they're strapped. there's not the access that we feel the students really need. >> this is believed to be the first strike involving doctors in the united states in the last quarter century.

the one-day strike ends tomorrow morning. the university spokesperson call the strike a negotiating tool. santa clara sheriff's deputies have arrested a gilroy man accused of growing pot in the back of his fake furniture store. in the 7500 block of monterey road. they say 39-year-old fluke winn never opened the business to sell furniture. he had more than 1,000 marijuana plants and 50-plus pounds of processed pot valued at $2 million. >> wow. let's talk about the weather. for the first time in a month we had rain. nothing to write home about. >> yeah. we don't get it often, so we'll take it. there were a few drops in san jose this morning. spencer christian is here with the accu-weather update. spencer? >> hey. if you're writing home about this, you wouldn't have to write a complete sentence. we had a few sprinklings sprizzles. a mostly cloudy day until the last few minutes. we've got pockets of partial clearing now.

arson investigators are sifting through debris from a

two-alarm fire in the carport next to a san jose four-plex. the flames threatened to spread to a nearby home. matt keller with details on the fire and how a newborn may have played a role in getting everyone out safely. >> reporter: fires at 3:28 in the morning are never good. people are sleeping and proper and lives are vulnerable. that was especially true at this carport fire in west san jose at the corner of galley court and wayburn lane. our cameras captured the flames 20 minutes after the call came in. >> i heard loud popping. i thought somebody of hitting a garbage can. i dip know what was going on -- didn't know what was going on. i looked out the window. the garage was on fire. flames were shooting out at least ten feet. >> reporter: the ten or so people living here were a friend of this man who just had a baby. he was paying a visit to the

hospital to celebrate a new life and returned a hero. >> he was parking, noticed smokement wasn't sure what -- smoke. wasn't sure what he was seeing. he saw flames -- oh, my god. the car's on fire. he called 911 at 3:28. soon he hung up, he knocked on the doors and woke everybody up. >> if you knock on anybody's door, they were in a deep sleep. they were shouting, what? i said there is a fire in your carport. come out. >> reporter: the fire destroyed three cars. one apartment suffered water damage. nitten's quick thinking and firefighters' quick work on the flames kept it from becoming a real tragedy. >> hopefully they are good. >> reporter: a fire captain told me any fire at 3:30 in the morning is by nature suspicious but stopped short of calling it arson. investigators still need to sitft through the evidence before determining a cause. abc7 news. we have breaking news. this is happening on 880 in fremont at thornton. sky 7 hd above a car fire.

the three left northbound lanes are closed as a result. breaking news in fremont. we don't know how the car caught on fire and whether or not anyone inside got out safely. we believe they did. you can see firefighters trying to extinguish the flames and then move the car. in the meantime, traffic is backed up after being northbound at 880 to milpitas. supervisors met behind closed doors to discuss the issues involving the as and raiders. it was hopeded the board would sign off on a plan that would allow the as and the raiders to submit their own stadium plans. no announcement yet as to whether that happened. oakland city councilmen see progress being made. >> we need to treat this more as a business relationship and not get caught up into the politics and i'm bigger and smarter than you are. i think that we're getting there.

>> santa clara officials are closely monitoring the stadium efforts, especially regarding the as. assessor larry stones the whole thing is a waste of time. >> they don't have the money. they don't have the finances, and they don't have the corporate leadership and financing that will make a ballpark happen. if they could, have tit would have been done a long time ago. >> dreams of an as ballpark may be more remote. the giants refuse to give up rights to the region, and legal efforts to strike them down have failed. most recently just last week. the city is pledging to take the case to the supreme court. now let's turn to deflate-gate. just days before the super bowl. there was a lot of deflecting questions about the issue during media day today. abc's ted rowlands has the latest. >> reporter: tom braid all smiles at -- tom brady all smiles at media day. answering questions but not saying anything new on the ongoing investigation over

deflate-gate. >> we know the challenge we have ahead of us. we're not going to let anything get in the way. we've got to go out and focus all our energy on things we can control. >> reporter: fox sports is reporting a person of interest has been identified, a locker room attendant that took footballs into another room at gillette stadium before the afc championship game. the actions reportedly caught on video. as the scandal continues to swirl, the patriots and seahawks are trying to focus on sunday's super bowl. >> better to pay no attention to it. i think it's hogwash. >> reporter: patriots' owner, robert kraft talking at media day, standing by his earlier declaration that his organization has done nothing wrong. and the nfl investigation will find nothing. >> i would expect and hope that the league would apologize to our entire team. and in particular, coach belichick and tom brady for what they have had to endure this

police are trying to find the owner of rare coins from asia stolen in a car last year. police showed a picture today hoping somebody will come forward. investigators tell us one is japanese, and the other chinese. they were found inside a vehicle belonging to a robbery suspect arrested last november. the suspect had ties to san francisco, but it is unknown where the coins were stolen. ing in with information, delve call police. >> absolutely. a big fine for the makers of a weight loss supplement and the breath of life. >> jane king is at the nasdaq with those stories and more in today's well not report. -- wellness report. >> reporter: a texas-based seller of weight loss supplements is paying a settlement. lindsay duncan's company made millions claiming green coffee bean supplements led to weight loss. he'll pay $9 million in refunds. controlling your breathing is an easy, cheap way to improve mental and physical health.

in the headlines where you live at 4:30, a former chp officer who stole nude photos from two women he arrested will not go to prison. sean harrington's attorney said the judge likely showed leniency because harrington took responsibility for his actions. abc 7's laura anthony tweeted saying "former chp officer pleaded no contes two counts of computer theft. felony probation but no jail time." right now san francisco police are searching for thieves who robbed the wells fargo museum in san francisco. the masked men used a stolen suv to drive right through the entrance early this morning. they took historic gold nuggets. no one was hurt. other historic items were not damaged, we're glad to tell you. the mormon church announced it will support lgbt rights. abc tweeted "mormon leaders

call for balanced approach between gay rights and religious freedom." the announcement does not mean the mormon church condones gay and lesbian relationships. abc 7 reporter leanne melendez is live from the mormon temple with the story. >> reporter: dan the mormon church is saying that america has become too polarized. on one hand you you have advocates of gay rights. on the other hand, you have advocates for religious freedom. and things have to be balanced out. out of a press conference in salt lake city, mormon leader said "we must find ways to respect for others whose beliefs, values and behaviors differ from our own while never being forced to deny or abandon our own beliefs." in other words, from now on, they're saying we are against any kind of discrimination toward gays, lesbians, bri sexuals, and transgender people as long as -- here's the condition -- as long as the law also protects the rights of

religious groups. >> a neighborhood catholic pharmacist who declines to carry the morning after pill when large pharmacy chains readily offer that item should likewise not be pressured into violating his or her conscience. >> reporter: and they also made it clear that they are still opposed to homosexuality. still, lgbt leaders in the bay area say doing what they did today is a step in the right direction. >> we were really excited. it's definitely an enormous step forward. we applaud the mormon church for taking the stand for basic civil rights and nondiscrimination against lgbt people. >> reporter: the mormon church is now one of the largest in the country to support these anti-discrimination laws. live in oakland, abc7 news. >> thank you. japanese officials held emergency meetings today over a new deadline supposedly issued by the isis militants holding a free land journalist --

freelance journalist hostage. the image shows the picture of kenji goto. a voice perurported to be goto's says he and another will be executed in the next 24 hours if jordan does not release a convicted suicide bomber. the japanese government refused to authenticate the audio but officials are trying to win goto's release. saudi arabia's new king has welcomed president obama and the first lady, michelle obama, to riyadh. they made a four-hour stop to pay their respects following the death of king abdullah. abc's karen travers has details. >> reporter: it was a brief stop in saudi arabia for president obama. a visit added to his overseas schedule after the death of king abdullah. >> an opportunity for the president to both pay respects for the life of king abdullah, who he worked closely with, but also to meet the new leader of saudi arabia and his team. >> reporter: that new leader is

king salmon who welcomed president obama to his year night palace on the outskirts of the capital city of riyadh. mr. obama and the king later met for about an hour discussing a range of topics mainly focused on security issues in the middle east. in an interview with cnn before the visit the president had sharp words for saudi arabia. a close u.s. ally and key partner in the region, but a nation with a controversial record on human rights. he said saudi arabia needs to change how they do business but -- >> sometimes we have to balance our need to speak to them about human rights issues with immediate concerns that we have in terms of countering terrorism or dealing with regional stability. >> reporter: first lady michelle obama joined the president for this brief visit. a powerful image given saudi arabia's record on women's issues. mrs. obama stood beside her husband as he greeted the saudi delegation at the airport, offering an occasional

handshake, but only after she was of first greeted by a man. in his meeting with the king, president obama touched broadly on human rights. but there's no indication so far the new leader will enact any changes. karen travers, abc news, washington. a solemn ceremony this afternoon marked 70 years since liberators reached the auschwitz concentration camp. the soviet army liberated the polish camp on january 27th 1945. above the entrance of the camp a german sign hangs reading "work makes you free." i was there several years ago and saw that for myself. it's very powerful. 1.1 million people mostly jews, died in auschwitz between 1940 and 1945. survivors today pleaded for the world to never stand by and allow the atrocities of world war ii to be repeated.

>> we shall not let this be our children's future. >> this may be one of the last ceremonies to include more than a handful of survivors. most of the 300 in attendance today are in their 90s. six million jews died at the hands of the nazis during the holocaust. back in this country, another social media bomb threat against a southwest airlines flight from san diego to dallas. san diego national airport authorities say the twitter threat came in at 6:00 a.m. but officials found nothing on the plane that took off two hours later. southwest got a similar threat yesterday from twitter users isis gang cp saying a massive semi nuclear explosive was on board. investigators are calling the tweets hoaxes. the same twitter user has threatened seven other attacks. nothing has happened. just ahead here at 4:00, a helping hand for a police dog suffering from cancer. how bay area residents stepped up to help. >> reporter: in the 7 on your side q&a ahead i'm taking your

a cats left for dead and buried has clawed its way back to life. bart's owner found him lifeless in the middle of a road a few weeks ago. bart's owner buried him in the back yard. five days later, bart showed up in a neighbor's yard alive but understandably very weak. >> i took him to the owner. and heaped the door and was in shock. we knew this cat was dead. there's no logical explanation. we say it's god's miracle. >> bart is currently being treated for a broken jaw and several ones on. veterinarians expect -- vef wound s wounds. veterinarians expect him to be okay, although he's used up all of his nine lives. bay area owners stepped up to help a dog who needs cancer treatment. we first told you about frank yesterday on abc7 news at 4:00

a new approach to prostate cancer screening may help doctors better identify men at risk. the near newer, more targeted approach uses mris. a standard biopsy uses an ultrasound. researchers say the targeted biopsies saw a 30% increase in detection of high-risk prostate cancer which compared to a traditional biopsy. you can fine the study in the most recent issue of "the "journal of the american medical association." ". sugary drinks may be tied to the early on set of pubertiy in girls. harvard researchers found girls who drank 1.5 sugary drinks a day got their first period nearly three months earlier than those who had fewer than two sugary drinks a week. the study did not take into account other dietary factors. you may have noticed facebook is back up and running following a worldwide service outage that lasted nearly an

hour overnight. the social network said a technical change it made caused the disruption for more than two billion web and mobile phone users in the u.s., asia, australia, and the u.k. instagram and tinner which relies on facebook for service, were also affected. as a precaution, facebook users are advised to change their passwords and review their privacy settings. twitter is rolling out two new features designed to make its mobile app more user friendly. starting today, the company is letting users send group messages and shoot video. when people initiate a group chat, they'll be able to invite anyone who follows them into that chat, allowing conversations among other users who may not know about one another. users will also be able to record edit and upload video clips through their phone's camera. >> i don't know how they missed our jobs. the career website glass door released a new report today on the best jobs in america for 2015. the mill valley company's list includes 25 jobs ten are in

i thought i had a strong enough password. anything i can do to prevent it in the future? >> it depends how you were hacked. sometimes they go after storage. you don't know where it's coming from. let me give a couple of suggestions. first of all, every single password you have should be different from every other one. i know that's all but impossible to keep up with but it's the only way to be safe. otherwise, they get one password, tie it to your e-mail account, they start trying everything. and then you're dead. they'll find a bunch of them. you need to be careful with that. then what you want is a password manager. that's the easiest way to go. a couple of the big ones are lastpass and dashlane. you can go to the iphone app store to check it out. you really can't just have the same one all the time. last week i reported that -- do you know what the most popular password is yet again? >> password? >> 1 -- 123456? >> and password. >> change them up. how about this -- josh c.

e-mailed, i got a credit card for a retail store that charges 20% interest. can i pay one card that had a high interest rate using another credit card? >> you can. it's legal. there's no rule against it. it's just other credit card company won't accept it. they don't want to pay the fees that they charge all the other people. so you generally -- they won't allow it. the easiest way, if you don't want to pay that 20% and you can't afford to pay it off now, if you have decent credit the best thing you you can do is get a new card that allows you to transfer a balance. transfer it over there, and hopefully you'll get a 0% balance. >> okay. kevin key e-mailed -- i have travel insurance for my canceled flight. they offered my credit to fly later, but i'd rather use my insurance and get the cash. can i do this? >> you can generally. the rules are specific on this. first of all, don't take anything from the airline yet or else you'll blow the whole deal. then, call up your travel agency -- travel insurance company.

$200,000. that's apparently more than what the gold is worth. abc7 news reporter vick lee is live from montgomery street with the latest on this really outrageous heist. >> reporter: dan the good thing in this story is that the stagecoach is still in the museum. the thieves did not touch that. as you said they got the gold. it was daring. it was bold. it was right in the early morning hours. >> the front door of the wells fargo bank. >> reporter: it happened just after 2:30 this morning. the sufficient crashed into the revolving glass doors of the wells fargo museum. >> three suspects involved wearing ski masks hoodies, and blue jeans. >> reporter: the three got out held a security guard at gunpoint, and made off with gold nuggets from a display case. they escaped in a car and vanished. this is the fifth robbery in the city since november where thieves have used a car as a battering ram. among them a robbery of a patagonia store in january when

the crooks backed a u-haul through the store and stole pricey good. in november thieves crashed their car into a chanel boutique and made off with designer handbags. no one's been arrested in the robberies. one of the first of these crash-and-grabs occurred two years ago at a tiffany's jewelry store in walnut creek. this time the thieves may have thought they got gold rush-era nuggets which are worth even more. fortunately, they didn't. >> these nuggets represented the gold rush era from our understanding. these are not the actual ones that were obtained from that time. >> reporter: but gold is still gold. it's selling at just under $1,300 an ounce. the thieves got four to ten ounces of nuggets. their take roughly $5,000 to $13,000. >> it wasn't the biggest heist. wasn't any "oceans 11" mastermine heist. >> reporter: jewelers tell us gold nug
