of a patagonia store in january when the crooks backed a u-haul through the store and stole pricey good. in november thieves crashed their car into a chanel boutique and made off with designer handbags. no one's been arrested in the robberies. one of the first of these crash-and-grabs occurred two years ago at a tiffany's jewelry store in walnut creek. this time the thieves may have thought they got gold rush-era nuggets which are worth even more. fortunately, they didn't. >> these nuggets represented the gold rush era from our understanding. these are not the actual ones that were obtained from that time. >> reporter: but gold is still gold. it's selling at just under $1,300 an ounce. the thieves got four to ten ounces of nuggets. their take roughly $5,000 to $13,000. >> it wasn't the biggest heist. wasn't any "oceans 11" mastermine heist. >> reporter: jewelers tell us gold nuggets are rare and could

be more expensive. >> they're used in jewelry and the uniqueness. they're cool. nuggets are in. so the value could be three or four times more than the gold weight. >> reporter: the value of the gold heist may go up to $50,000 or more. abc7 news. another stolen suv almost crashed into a busy -- almost. it started at 7:30 this morning near tenant station in morgan hill. that's when a police officer spotted this dodge durango stolen out of gilroy. the driver would not stop for officers and sped off into busy shopping centers. the officer rammed suvs several times to try to stop it. the dodge ended up on the shopping center's sidewalk. officers arrested both the male driver and a female passenger for possession of stolen property among other violations. no officers were hurt. a family in san jose has a lot of questions about what happened after the youngest of three adult children was killed by cars involved in an apparent industries rate. 18-year-old gabrielle esparza

and 23-year-old manuel avalos are in jail for reckless driving. they hit a woman who was not inially walking or running at the side of the road when this happened. we've been talking with the family. david is live where this happened in san jose where their story. they are notably devastate and angry. >> reporter: extremely devastated, dan. mourners have been coming to the site where she died all afternoon. dropping off flowers, some putting up a sign that's "rest in peace." despite the tragedy that hooped here, drivers along yerba buena continue to speed. speeding along busy yerba buena road isn't difficult to document. a san jose police traffic officer stopped seven vehicles in a half-hour. the fastest were going 59 in a 40 mile-per-hour zone. that's little comfort for those who knew 24-year-old kieren pavla, killed when two speeding cars crashed and smashed through a guardrail. her family is spending this day

mourning and wondering why it happened. >> she didn't deserve this. she just went out for a jog like every other day. >> reporter: keyarena pavla had a large network of friends. she worked at a staffing agency. daily jogging had become a path to fitness and weight loss. relatives were planning a big party to celebrate her 25th birthday next month. >> almost 150 people here the last couple of hours just to show their respects. she was a very well-known person in this community. people loved her. people loved her smile. she was a joyful person. she didn't deserve this at all. >> reporter: now, 18-year-old gabrielle esparza and manuel avalos are in jail facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving. that is a process that charlene lennon knows. five years ago her 20-year-old daughter was killed by speeding cars also in san jose. the accused drivers would never look her in the eyes at court hearings.

>> they did not show one ounce of remorse that i saw during the whole entire process. they did not shed a tear. they -- there was excuses made. i just don't think they cared. i think they were more worried about themselves. >> reporter: family and friends placed flowers at the crash site. arrangements for a funeral must be made. >> for the two that did this i hope you guys go to sleep knowing that you guys killed an innocent person. but we'll still pay for your family, as well. >> reporter: in san jose, abc7 news. the first person to die from the flu in santa clara county this flu season did not take the vaccine. health officials confirmed the first fatal flu-related case today. the victim was under the age of 65 and did not have any medical risks that kpoufbcould have been complicated by the flu. this is the sixth flu death this season. a car fire on 880 in fremont just this afternoon. you see the flames shooting out of the car on the center

divider. it happened near the southbound maui avenue accident. thear fire caused backups -- the car fire caused backups in both directions on the freeway. you see firefighters there extinguishing the fire. no word if anybody was injured or what caused the flames. a concord teacher accused of child molestation has been found guilty on 19 counts. the contra costa jury convicted joseph martin. he argued nine boys in his class at woodside elementary mistook shoulder rubs for improper touching. a disgraced california highway patrol officer today admitted to stealing racy cell phone photos from two women. shawn harrington admits he stole the semi-nude photos from the cell phones of two female dui arrestees and passed those photos on to at least two other chp officers. the 35-year-old pleaded no contest to charges against him in contra costa county. >> i apologize to my family, my wife, my friend. i apologize to officers

everywhere, and especially to the two women involved. i'm trying to put this behind me and move forward from. this and i hope now everyone else can, too. >> with his plea, harrington received three years probation but no jail time. as part of his sentence the 35-year-old must attend and participate as a speaker in community violence solutions class. a teenage boy accused of stabbing a former classmate to death is back at home. homicide charges were dropped this morning. abc 7 now with a key piece of evidence that may have led to the release. alissa? >> reporter: this is where star athlete and state-a student rashaun williams was stabbed to death outside of this convenience store on 2 and folsom streets. defenders say the surveillance video proved police arrested the wrong person. >> our client who is a young teenager was villainized and called a murderer. >> reporter: the san francisco public defender says his teenaged client sat in a

juvenile detention center for months accused of a grisly crime he did not commit. today the district attorney's office dropped the charges again him for the murder of -- against him for the murder of 14-year-old rashaun williams. >> given of the evidence, the charges have been dropped at this time. >> reporter: other charges could be filed later. for now there's nobody in custody for the murder which happened september 2nd outside ruben's market in san francisco's mission district. two pieces of surveillance video from outside the store and from a mcdonald on mission street prove his client is not the one who committed the stabbing. in this shot the teen is in front wearing khakis. another young man is in red wearing a dark sweatshirt and dark pants. this video is from outside ruben's market and shows the stabbing. the victim is in the yellow circle. >> the video showed that the clothing worn by the person who committed the stabbing was not the clothing worn by our cline.

>> reporter: although he was there seen running in the blue circle and may know the person who stabbed the victim. the other teen in the video, he says, is the one who committed the crime. police have not officially named any other suspects. meanwhile, family and friends of williams are awaiting new answers and justice for their loved one. in san francisco, abc7 news. breaking news now. at least one person is dead and two others wounded in a shoot-out in san francisco. sky 7 hd is live over the bayview district at engle street and revere avenue. an hour ago witnesses reported two cars firing shots at one another. ten minutes after that two people with gunshot wounds showed up at the old clamhouse restaurant on bayshore boulevard. you see the vehicle on the street with bullet holes in it. police are investigating both locations. they have not announced arrests. one person dead. stay with abc7 news for any breaking updates and follow us on twitter at abc7newsbayarea.

church threw support behind a bill currently before the utah legislature banning housing and employment discrimination against gays and lesbians. the director of the lgbt community in san francisco applauds the church's decision but notes it is conditional. >> we were excited. it's definitely an enormous step forward. we applaud the mormon church for taking the stand for bake civil rights and for -- basic civil rights and for nondiscrimination against lgbt people. >> here's the condition -- the church says it will also support the other proposed bill in utah saying no one can be forced to perform a gay marriage if he or she has religious objections. in other words, the church cannot discriminate again the civil rights of lgbt people as long as those rights do not conflict with tenets of the religion. an oakland man says he has video of people breaking into cars and wants the city to do something about it. let's show you a website now as we look live. it shows you just how much crime there is. these icons are crimes ranging from vandalism to murder.

over 460 of them in just the past week. almost all in oakland. abc 7 reporter wayne freedman live with the story. wayne? >> reporter: good evening, dan. we all know that the oakland police department is overworked and understaffed. this is a story about content. about what we take for granted. this is about a smash-and-grab yesterday in a restaurant parking lot. it's also about the reaction to it or lack of reaction. let's begin with the victim. >> when i walked back to the car, i saw the glass shattered all over my seat. >> reporter: marcella foster found oakland diamonds next to her car in the parking lot of the restaurant. ownership seems unhappily resigned to betty crime along with much of the rest of the city. >> i mean, it happens all over the place. >> reporter: marcella lost more than $800,000 worth of cell phones in the robbery and lost more confidence in oakland as a

place to live. and she works for the county. >> it's the cool in my-- it's my mind and my body and i don't want to live this way. >> here's the vehicle pulling in. >> reporter: her co-worker, lawrence brooks, asked the restaurant for video from its surveillance camera. they turned it over. watch how the thief in a white stocking cap reveals himself from behind the suv while breaking into the car testimony took all of ten seconds. you might think the oakland police would want to be all over this video. but no. at the same time this happened yesterday, they were working a fatal shooting on 35th avenue. but 24 hours after filing her smash-and-grab report, still no actionknowledgement acknowledgment? >> i am surprised i haven't hear anything. i'm not surprised they didn't come out. >> it shouldn't be this way anywhere really. >> reporter: now a final twist. when the thieves finished pillaging the bag, they left it on the street and a good samaritan turned it over to her.

the bag still held her keys among other items including a brown bag filled with snacks. so there's a little bit of good to go with the bad. >> that has to restore some faith in humanity. >> absolutely. >> reporter: it only cost her $800. from oakland wayne friedman, abc 7 news. a albania on a ma-- a bount oh a mattress. that is the idea behind a program whose goal is to clear illegally dumped mattresses and save hundreds of thousands in transport and disposal each year. it's given east oakland-based recycling company dr3 a $25,000 grant to tag mattresses with dollar amounts, up to $12 for a king sized. they want to see how many people bring them in to collect on the tagged bounty. we all love options right? >> yeah. >> guess what -- we may have fewer choices to do when you go grocery shopping in the near

future. >> mikechael finney with a a proposed merger. >> reporter: it's a concern will we have enough options once albertson's and safe may merge. both announced they've agreed to sell a total of 168 stores in eight states. it's their way of easing concerns that their proposed merger would mean less competition. the federal trade commission has argued the deal would make consumers have fewer choices in 130 local markets. and some of those are here in california. regulators also predict they would be paying higher prices and shopping in lower quality supermarkets. most of the stores sold in california would be bought by pagan. -- hagan. food and pharmacy stores based outside seattle. just a week ago, i reported that super bowl ticket prices were averaging about $2,900 on the secondary market. that's 20% less than last year. oh, what a difference a week makes.e same tickets are selling on average for $6,500.

that's more than double the price of last year at this time. apparently trackers like a potential tom brady win, a seahawks super bowl victory, and hype over deflate-gate have inflated prices. i know. thank you. some people say love hurts. at least on valentine's day. it can hurt in the pocketbook. abc news reports the average person will spend $142 on valentine's day this year. that's $8 more than last year. an increase of about 5.5%. men spend as much as women, findings show, to spoil their -- excuse me twice as much. >> only twice as much? only? >> yeah. that's the attitude i will expect. >> i wouldn't settle for that. >> i didn't say anything. >> i know. >> thanks. sierras saw a couple of inch

driest januarys, you see where we fare. average rainfall for the month is typically just over three months. and san francisco looks like it's going down in the record books, as well. especially since we're not expecting any rain for the rest of this month. 2015 nothing for san francisco. average is about 4.5 inches. it is great to see pictures like this from our lake tahoe cam. a couple inch doesn't cut it. pretty picture. we need several feet, 60s now san francisco. oakland, pretty mild in san jose. 64 degrees. half moon bay, 57. here's the beautiful view looking forward ocean beach. the numbers are all really in the comfort zone. low to mid 60s right now from santa rosa to livermore. here's another view looking toward downtown oakland from our emeryville camera. you see the clouds there. you'll be seeing more of those. high cloud overnight mostly sunny tomorrow. dry and mild heading into the weekend. here's a look at the pacific satellite picture. that low-pressure system that brought a trace amount to san jose is weak.

it's moving out. that's why it didn't produce a lot for us here in the bay area. now what's going to happen is overnight tonight, we'll have the cloud cover. tomorrow afternoon, mostly sunny. then by tomorrow evening, we'll start to see some fog coming back in near the coastline. we always want to look at the long-range forecast. we're still waiting for rain. in about ten days we'll have our next chance of rain. february 6th. i know we keep saying that but we're hoping january and february are very different in terms of our rainfall pattern. tomorrow morning, low 40s to low 50s. there will be patchy fog around near the carquinez strait and delta. you will need to watch for that. for the afternoon, sunshine, a few high clouds, temperatures will remain above average like they were today. 65 in santa rosa. fremont, san jose, livermore, 67 oakland, 63 san francisco, 64 in half moon bay. our mildest spot, santa cruz, at 70 degrees. accu-weather seven-day forecast, we'll keep you in the mid 60s

the use of fracking. that's when water and chemicals are injected at high pressure to break up rock formations. california resources simply says the project is no longer practical. the white house's top female tech aide is calling out hollywood for ignoring the role of women during the rise of silicon valley. megan smith is the white house's chief technology officer. the first woman to hold the position. she previously served as vp for google's experimental tech division. today at a tech policy conference in washington smith specifically pointed to the absence of women in the movie "jobs," about the late apple co-founder. in the early days, smith said there were numerous women, but they're missing in the film. she says it's a common problem in movies about the tech industry. smith told the audience when women and minorities don't see themselves represented on screen, it makes it harder to see themselves in the tech industry. it's certainly hard to ignore the rise of women in comedy. today, four women were announced as the leads in a remake of
