a grizzly murder has san francisco police investigators combing the neighborhoods around the crime scene for a second straight day. good afternoon everyone. >> investigators are looking for missing body parts from a torso found in a suitcase near 11th and mission streets. vic lee is live from the crime scene. vic? >> we saw a lot of cops here in the neighborhood today and they were obviously looking for two things, body parts and videotape. yesterday they thought they had a videotape that showed the suspect, and they briefly detained three men in this neighborhood based on that description. since then they have eliminated that particular video.

they have at least one other video which may show the actual suspect. >> police were back this morning combing through garbage bins in the neighborhood where the body parts were found. yesterday shortly after 4:00 in the afternoon officers responded to a call about a suspicious package in front of good will industries on 11th street near mission. they found a suitcase inside a headless torso. then a homeless man pointed them to a set of garbage bins at nearby firestone tires. inside one of them a bag containing a leg. officers were looking for the other body parts. they were also going to businesses looking for security video. among them the one from outside goodwill. gary told us what was on that video. >> across the street he seemed to be pulling something. >> police also showed a homeless person a still taken from another video. >> it was a behind shot of him

with a hoodie on carrying a black backpack with an emblem right in the middle of it. we all looked and all of us have not seen this guy. >> the gruesome discovery horrified people who live and work around here. many of them told us they saw people acting suspiciously before the body parts were found. >> he had a dead stare. we stared at him and he was off in some other world. >> i happened to see a homeless guy with a knife stabbing into a tree kind of playing into a tree. >> it's unclear at this time if the body parts belong to one victim. so far all the medical examiner will say is that they are indeed human. vic lee, abc 7 news. a mysterious body just became san francisco's 10th motor victim of the year, it's been a violent start to 2015 for both san francisco and oakland which has nine homicides already. both cities are on track to have more than 100 murders, there were 49 homicides in san

francisco last year and 80 in oakland. third street just reopened after a shootout involving two cars. police are trying to sort out two separate crime scenes right now. one is at third and revere the others at third and lasalle. this is just a few blocks away from a car to car shooting two days ago that left two people dead. doctors in sacramento performed tests today on a patient to see if he or she is carrying the ebola virus. according to the sacramento county health department, the patient is being evaluated at uc davis medical center. the patient came to the hospital from the emergency room at uc general. that er is closed for cleaning now. coming up at 5:00, laura anthony is at uc davis medical center and will join us live with what officials are saying tonight. dozens of residents, several businesses are trying to pick up pierces after flames raged through their building.

abc 7 news reporter amy holly field has the latest. >> this is what the enormous fire looked like last night. that even after these huge flames were gone, firefighters did not let down their guard. crews watched the building all night, and were busy dealing with flairups. then, at 3:30 this morning, a small miracle. they found this guy on the damaged third floor of the burned building. he was okay and surprised. fire fighters wondered how he survived these flames. >> about eight hours into the fire. my understanding is we were able to bring the dog to the resident who lost everything, but still has his or her dog. >> he was the bright spot in an otherwise grim morning. city officials started realizing the human toll of this fire. as the mayor and fire chief examine the wreckage they instructed city officials to help the 54 residents and 20

small businesses displaced by the fire. >> we have disaster plans in our bailiwick of programs. and we'll be able to release those as soon as we can assess what people need and what their plans are. >> ally rothschild's business is on the second floor. he stared in shock at the tv coverage last week. >> watching to see if my office was going to be engulfed in flames. >> he's worried about his business, but also some of his pets. >> i have some fish up there, i'm hoping they're still alive see if i can get them out. >> fire investigators are also concerned about what residents are telling them being stuck on fire escape ss. >> there were reports, there were no audible alarms in that building that they heard. >> six people were trapped on it. they couldn't get down firefighters did save them, but see that pull down ladder, how that awning blocks it from

extending all the way to the ground, that will be one of many factors that will be a part of this extensive investigation. in san francisco, amy holly field, abc 7 news. crimestoppers is offering a $7500 reward for information leading to the arrest of a sexual assault suspect. police say a 10-year-old boy was walking down 98th avenue around 3:00 p.m. on tuesday. when a man approached him. officers say the man lured the boy to a nearby area and sexually assaulted him. the victim was able to get away and tell his parents what happened. safe and sound. that woman you see from sky 7 hd got back to shore today after getting stranded on the bay. authorities say she headed out at 6:00 this morning, with her small dog to see if she could free up her 30 foot sailboat that became grounded on tuesday. her dingy got stuck in the mud. she eventually made it back to the docks this afternoon. >> we have boaters that are out here, because of conditions and

tides, their comfort level on the waterways sometimes they go past their comfort levels and they call us to help them out and assist if necessary. >> the coast guard tried to rescue her hours earlier with an air boat. the rescue team could not reach her because of very heavy fog. the san francisco dmv is closed for the day after a water main break this morning. the break sent water and mud running into parts of the dmv. officials tell us they hope to open again tomorrow morning. a woman fighting for her life after she was hit by a car this morning. it happened after 8:00 near brotherhood and thomas more way in san francisco. she suffered life threatening injuries. the driver is cooperating with authorities. a driver faces felony dui after a pursuit in east oakland this morning. it began when they tried to pull over someone on i-580.

has emerged this month trees are blossoming early, especially in the south bay where warm days have appeared to have awakened them. david louie is live in san jose to explain why. we see them right behind you david. >> absolutely. a beautiful site trees in full bloom, it's still january. trees on hillsides such as this, where they have day long sun exposure, seem to think it's spring already. it's a phenomenon across the santa clara valley. >> the explosion of blossoms is all around. here it is mother nature's way of signaling spring is here, earlier than normal. >> i would say maybe 10 to 15 days ahead of what's normal for what i've seen. >> nick says some trees and plants are on schedule. magnolias for example, and certain species of camillas. but one species is early this

affect it. usually freezing temperature is closer to the ground. the higher up you go on the tree, the less chance you have of having that cooler temperature up there. >> in san jose, david louie abc 7 news. >> jerry brown was in san francisco today talking about solar energy. the governor was joined by housing and urban development secretary. a top attender. they presented a plan to make subsidized housing units more energy efficient. that includes helping building owners pay for the installation of solar panels. >> reducing our energy consumption 50% by all existing buildings. increasing renewables 50%. and reducing our petroleum as close to 50% as we can. >> it could save nearly $7 billion on its utility bill every year just by increasing the efficiency of its apartment

vic lee tweeted this photo of police off the scene. also tonight, a possible ebola case in sacramento, an abc 7 news tweet broke the news just before noon that using david's medical center is testing a patient who may have the ebola virus. all eyes on the middle east, where there is still no word on the fate of two hostages being held by the terrorist group isis. one is a japanese journalist, the other is a pilot from jordan. abc news reporter karen traverse reports, a prisoner exchange for the jordanian pilot was supposed to take place hours ago. >> hours after the latest isis deadline past, the fates of two hostages are unknown. this message released wednesday night, the terror group's last communication featured the voice of the japanese journalist. >> if they're not ready for exchange for my life at the

turkish border the jordanian pilot will be killed immediately. >> isis wants a prisoner exchange. jordan's government said it would cooperate, but with one big condition. >> we want to see a proof of life of the jordanian pilots and then we can talk about the exchange. >> so far no such proof has been given. the pilots father pleaded with isis to release his son, he said sparing a muslim brother would give them a big positive reaction among jordanians and palestinians. journalist kenji goto's wife said she's been contacted by isis and she fears the prisoner exchange could be her husband's last chance to live. one woman was sentenced to life in prison for her involvement in an al qaeda attack in 2005.

investigating spontaneous fires and cars a year ago. >> a lot of people weren't paying much attention to that report back then. things are changing. toyota recalled the 2011 and 2012 avalon sedan. cargo in the trunk could come into contact with wiring from the audio system's sub would haver, if that wire touches metal it could short circuit, overheat and catch fire. late last week kia recalled the 2014 sedan due to fire risk and on new year's eve, volkswagen recalled the 2014 beatle, jetta and passat. last may my 7 on your side investigation uncovered 126 nonaccident deaths. 2012 alone. over the last 15 years there have been hundreds of fire related car recalls, those

down. imagine that. neil karlinsky has the details. >> watching the incredible video, you may wonder what the pilot of this plane saved by a built-in parachute and hurtling toward the pacific ocean is doing inside right now. in a gma exclusive, 25-year-old pilot shows us. he wasn't praying. he was taking a selfie on the way down with his go pro. with the door open, you can see the parachute over his head. the life vest around his neck and the ocean closing in. >> it was kind of funny right before that, the coast guard was like, i do not envy you at all right now. >> morton had been in the air seven hours from california on his way to hawaii when the plane suffered some kind of malfunction in the fuel system. he called for help on his satellite phone. and then he called his dad. >> the hardest part of the flight is making that phone call. >> at that point i told him i'm probably going to be ditching in

we begin tonight with a new ebola scare. good evening. >> public health officials in sacramento are working right now to figure out exactly what's going on here, a person went to mercy hospital complaining of ebola like symptoms. the patient was transferred to uc davis medical center in sacramento in which the cdc has designated as an ebola treatment site. that's where laura anthony is live for us tonight. >> we're not getting a lot of new information out of the hospital. they were to have a 3:30 press conference that was abruptly cancelled. hospital officials say they don't have any new information, they need to wait for the test results to find out if they do in fact have a confirmed case of ebola. >> scared. i don't know how to say it. it's frightening. >> the symptoms are similar, and according to the california department of public health, the

patient recently travelled to west africa, so far there's no confirmation that the uc davis medical center is treating someone with ebola. bonnie castillo is with the california nurse's association many. >> our initial reports are that the nurses who have volunteered are comfortable and confident in providing the care for this patient. and we expect to be hearing more from them on an on going basis. >> the unidentified patient showed up at the emergency room of another sacramento hospital. mercy general. was then transferred to uc davis medical center, which is one of four designated treatment centers in california. the treatment at uc med center is being kept at an isolation unit. and the nurses and doctors have state of the art protective suits. according to gill chavez, whenever there's a person displaying symptoms that may be
