health, the patient recently travelled to west africa, so far there's no confirmation that the uc davis medical center is treating someone with ebola. bonnie castillo is with the california nurse's association many. >> our initial reports are that the nurses who have volunteered are comfortable and confident in providing the care for this patient. and we expect to be hearing more from them on an on going basis. >> the unidentified patient showed up at the emergency room of another sacramento hospital. mercy general. was then transferred to uc davis medical center, which is one of four designated treatment centers in california. the treatment at uc med center is being kept at an isolation unit. and the nurses and doctors have state of the art protective suits. according to gill chavez, whenever there's a person displaying symptoms that may be ebola, who has recently

travelled to sierra leone, liberia or guinea, certain precautions are taken. in the meantime the emergency room at mercy general is being cleaned. we found visitors there a little concerned. >> i brought my baby today to the cardiac unit. even though that's not the same area it's something anybody can catch. >> over the past few months, uc davis med center has treated several patients who appear to have ebola like symptoms. all the tests came back negative. in sacramento, laura anthony, abc 7 news. in the meantime scientists tracking the ebola outbreak in guinea say the virus has mutated and could be more contagious, which is terrible news. more than 20000 people have been infected with ebola and 8800 have died. we have breaking news out of mountain view. sky 7 hd is live over this screen, where caltrains confirms one of its southbound trains has

hit and killed a person on the tracks. happened just south of the mountain view station just before 4:30. emergency responders are on the scene, and the tracks are closed now in both directions. you're getting a better look at it here. the eta will provide a bus bridge between the mountain view and sunnyvale stations. no word on why that person was on the tracks. our breaking news coverage continues now on twitter at abc 7 news bay area. police are searching for a man who sexually assaulted a 10-year-old boy who was just walking down the street in east oakland. it happened around 3:00 p.m. on tuesday on 98th avenue near elm hurst park. a man lured the boy away from the street and assaulted him. the boy was able to get away and told his parents what happened. he described the suspect as a thin man in his 40s, with salt and pepper hair and a full beard. crimestoppers is offering a $7500 award for information leading to an arrest.

>> investigators are trying to figure out why the smoke alarms and fire escapes were not working in last night's intensifier in san francisco. the fire in the mission district killed one person and injured six others. residents and business owners are pushed out as a result. leann melendez is there with the latest. >> reporter: the fire chief was concerned about a long list of things for example, the sprinkler system the fire alarm, the fire escape, the windows, they were either not working properly or not at all. in the meantime fire investigators or arson investigators are here on the site trying to figure out how this all started. this woman became emotional after seeing the damage caused by last night's huge fire. she and her husband were inside their apartment, but heard no alarms. >> my husband -- if the fire wasn't there --

>> the fire escape. >> she feared for her life and froze. fortunately, firefighters were there to help them escape. they were among 12 people rescued. she was taken to the hospital. this morning fire chief joanne showed the mayor some of the damage. the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. she too has been told there was no audible alarm in the building. >> we're looking at the sprinkler system the -- if there was a working and adequate fire alarm system as well. >> we'll give you 15 minutes. >> close to 30 businesses on the lower level were damaged. some owners were allowed to retrieve what they could. >> some important documents. it's pretty bad in there. there's water everywhere. >> right now we're assessing what the damages are and working with small businesses and what their needs are, to find out if we can help them get inside. >> there were some grateful moments.

13-year-old alessandro gonzalez rescued his dog and jumped from the second floor. >> they told me to throw my dog, i did. after the police came, in they're like everybody just move. and they caught me. >> at 3:00 this morning firefighters found another dog among the rubble. >> it's a small dog. he had a good hiding place. >> one person died after going into cardiac arrest. saldanha and others realize it could have been worse. >> thank god. >> leann melendez, abc 7 news. >> maybe you'd like to help. there's a go fund me campaign to help the people displaced by the fire. the american red cross is accepting donations. if you'd like to get involved we have the information on our website. pedestrians safety is at issue again in san francisco after two separate incidents today, the most recent a 3-year-old child is recovering after being hit by a van in the

mission district near that fire scene. happened just before 11:00 this morning at 21st and mission street. the child went to san francisco general hospital and is expected to recover. the driver of the van is cooperating with police. earlier this morning just off a busy street an suv ran into a woman in the city, this happened at 8:00 in the morning. the woman went to the hospital has serious injuries. the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police as well. in san jose changes on the road where a jogger was killed this week by a suspected street racer. this is new video of a temporary speed radar trailer near eden wood drive. police are watching this stretch closely to catch speeders. a permanent side alerting drivers of the speed. police say two drivers were going 70 miles an hour in the 40

mile an hour zone. >> homicide detectives searched the area around 11th between howard and mission streets. they were looking for additional body parts after officers found a headless torso in a suitcase yesterday. grizzly. on abc 7 news at 6:00, vic lee will tell you about new information investigators have turned up so far. a lot of questions about whether schools were taking a live look which is on the way to breaking news. you can see here this is a live look. this is the bay bridge some sort of fire. car fire perhaps. you can see that thick dark smoke coming off of the scene there, as we get into focus there. it appears to be on the upper deck of the bay bridge. >> it's hard to tell exactly what it is. we'll stay on top of it for you. >> we'll have the latest on twitter on abc 7 news bay area.

there have been a lot of questions about whether schools can force parents into volunteering or if they're allowed to charge fees if the parents skip out. chris winn looked into it and has more from san jose. >> good evening, parents cannot be forced to volunteer. that is the official word from the california department of education. we're live tonight at downtown college prep in san jose. while involvement is very important, kids should never be punished for the actions of their parents. >> downtown college prep, a charter high school in san jose, assistant principal says parent volunteering is not required. >> we've been lucky that we have parents who want to be here, hoping they're really invested in what their kids are doing. >> parents like theresa, whose 16-year-old son is a college

prep student. >> you have to show them how to be a leader. >> late last fall, an investigation conducted by the san francisco nonprofit public advocate found dozens of schools across california some in the bay area had rules in place to possibly penalize students who did not perform mandatory service hours. reminding public and charter school officials they cannot force parents into volunteering. it was welcome news to college prep alum sandra cruz a first generation college student whose parents weren't able to be as active as they would like. >> they had low income jobs or minimum wage taking a day off from work would have been an extreme hardship. >> if there's a will, there's a way. >> it's going to take their dinnertime movie time or social

live look from sky 7 hd. this is on the upper deck of the bay bridge, where there was a car fire. >> three right lanes on the upper deck, westbound coming into the city are closed as they deal with this car that burst into flames. no one was injured but it is obviously affecting traffic. we'll stay on top of it here and update you as need by on abc 7 news bay area. well before the sun came up a census began to count the homeless population in marin county. >> it's needed to get federal aid for homeless programs. the health the count results in can truly change lives. >> by 10:00 this morning, it was pret i much finished. >> a lot of homeless people are invisible. >> san rafael knows about the

issue firsthand. hence the census that occurred long before many of us got caught up. >> i got 25 rv's. >> it's been 25 years since the last tally. one of the counties the homeless themselves counting. this couple live in a van. >> lost my job, lost pretty much everything. my truck my tools. and the house. >> the last census two years ago, showed 900 homeless in marin county with 450 of them in san rafael alone. this city spends a million dollars a year on them. >> it's a tradition of charity that began with the san rafael mission. it continues with a relative abundance of social services. >> good resources out here. >> soup kitchen food clothes, bus tickets. all that. >> all that?

and another live picture from our east bay hills camera looking out toward the bay. areas of fog overnight tonight, spring like for the weekend. there are hints of change for the end of next week. i'll explain in a moment here, overnight tonight, you're going to see some fog along the coast around parts of the bay foggy spots for your morning commute. it was hard to see there was damp spots due to mist and drizet. tomorrow afternoon the coastal clouds will linger and that will hold your temperatures down in some areas. the rest of you staying pretty mild. high pressure is really the blocking factor here, storm door remains shut because high pressure is not allowing any of those storms to get in, we're going to continue to see dry conditions for several more days. i want to show you something that is encouraging. next chance of rain friday february 6th going into saturday february 7th. i know computer models have been
