live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. people who know the man arrested in a gruesome san francisco murder are in shock tonight, accused in the case of a dismembered body found in a suitcase. tonight we're hearing from people who lived in the building where murder suspect mark andress was staying. we're learning new details about the case. lisa joins us live from the san francisco jail where andress is being held tonight. lisa? >> reporter: hi katy. you know he is here being held without bail. i heard that the suspect will be represented by jeff adoche and his team over at the public

defender's office. you will be there in court to defend him? >> yeah. that's what we do. >> reporter: san francisco public defender jeff adoche came to the jail to visit mark andress. andress, seen in these surveillance camera stills, is believed to have dismembered a body stuffed the headless torso into a suitcase and dumped it at 11th and market. >> pled a plea of not guilty. at this point the case is under investigation. >> reporter: police point to photos in this surveillance video leading to andress' a arrest. last night investigators came to the public housing building in the tender loun after getting an anonymous tip. andress didn't officially live here. but one longtime resident told me the 59-year-old has lived here on and off for about a year.

this man lives next door. >> that was a surprise. when i saw his picture on tv. >> reporter: others are shocked that a man seen regularly in the building to be accused of something like this. >> my roommate she got kind of afraid of it. but i looked at her, and said sometimes you expect things like that. >> reporter: mark andress will be arained early next week. abc 7 news. the mother of one of four men shot to death in hayes valley earlier this month claimed san francisco investigators aren't doing enough to find the killer. 19-year-old yolani was killed january 9th while sitting in a stolen car on page street with three other african-american men in their early 20s. police say three of the victims had gang ties and guns were found inside the car. her mother said she set up a

trust fund. >> we want multiple private investigators to go in to put fear in them young people to let them know you cannot keep it a secret, and you cannot go and start executing anyone, let alone four at a time. >> police have not made any arrests in the case. they say they are stepping up patrols to head off any more violence. dozens of people remain out of their home tonight after a fire cut through their homes in san francisco. piles of debris on the ground. the fire burned up to 24 apartments, just north of alamo square park this afternoon. firefighters were there well into the night. it was certainly scary for people who found themselves running for safety. >> i ran inside to get the cats. and then while i was doing that, the police pounded on all the doors in the building and said out now.

someone helped me for a minute find one of my cats. >> the cats are okay and no one was hurt. the red cross is helping people who need food clothing and shelter tonight. a business in san francisco's mission district is rallying residents to help people who lost their home and belongings in a fire this week. belly up to the bar. >> reporter: katie pretty quickly after wednesday night's fire, the owners at dock's clocks cocktails here committed pretty quickly to a saturday night benefit for the fire victims. tonight they have collected clothes and cash, and they had a pretty good night. throughout the night, people brought in their donations of clothes and other items to help survivors of the fire. the owner of the bar says she didn't think twice about organizing this event. >> it can happen to anyone. you go and help these people.

you could be next. you never know. >> reporter: this and all matching funds provided by google will be provided to a go fund me account that already has $60,000 pledged. according to the guy who set up that account, he plans to work with a local nonprofit to help deafy up the cash for those who lost their homes in the fire. >> our main concern right now is our dad. he's still in the hospital in critical condition right now. >> reporter: one of the last people to be rescued from wednesday's fire. he's pictured here with his wife. she's still rattled by the fire, her husband's injuries, and the fact that they're all now homeless. >> she's hanging in there. she's still in shock. >> reporter: right now the family of maurice is trying to figure out how to pay for his funeral expenses. he was the only person killed in the fire. his aunt talked with our media

partner. she said it's sad, but there are some things that happen that only god understands. he was originally from el salvador, and they're trying to figure out how to send his remains back home. black smoke could be seen across the bay area this afternoon. crews from the fire protection district said eight acres caught fire on a small piece of land in the sasoon marsh. fire investigators aren't sure how it started. crews couldn't reach the fire because it was surrounded by water which is also why they say they weren't too concerned about it. this month has set a dubious record as the driest january on

record for the bay area. let's head over to abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma. >> we're stepping into unprecedented territory across some of our locations this month. we ended the month on a very dry note. the last time we've seen measurable precipitation well back on christmas eve. taking a look at the month of january itself in san francisco, did not see one day that had a drop of rain. our records go back 165 years. and we have never seen a completely dry january. that's exactly what we set as we end the month tonight. we ended the month on a rather warm note. the records were shattered in at least nine cities across the bay area. some locations topping out in the lower 80s. we're tracking cooler temperatures and the next chance of rain is in sight. i'll have more in the forecast in just a few minutes.

police are searching for the person who spray painted swastikas on a jewish fraternity house early this morning. the fraternity has condemned it as a hate crime says it threatens to rekindle tensions on campus. they believe it's in response to students passing an advisory resolution asking uc regents to stop investing in businesses connected to israel. >> the fact that this bill passed on thursday, all weekend there have been, you know, tweets facebook posts, very anti-semitic, and then saturday morning the jewish fraternity house has a swastika on their door. it's tough not to draw that conclusion. >> the university is working with students and the fraternity to figure out what to do next. still to come on abc 7 news at 11:00, outrage and horror in japan over a new video that may show the beheading a japanese

>> reporter: as for isis' mystery man, officials know his name and they're on his trail. richard cantu, abc news, new york. ten nantz fought back against a landlord they say is harassing them. they marched through san francisco's castro district holding signs and beating drums. all of these people claim the woman who owns their rent-controlled homes has done everything she can to get them evicted, cut off their utilities and changed their leases with little or no warning. we made an attempt to get the owner's side of the story but our phone calls and e-mails have not been returned. fire destroyed a $120,000 astin-martin vantage after the owner headed across the golden gate bridge into san francisco. he heard someone yell your car's on fire.

then he saw smoke billowing out of the back of his car. that's where the engine is located. the owner was not hurt. he said he had only had the car for a year and it only had 4,000 miles on it. san francisco's municipal transportation agency launched a new route today. the 16th street bus-to-mission bay. route 55 will connect riders from the 16th street b.a.r.t. station to the new ucsf medical center. it will operate every day from 6:00 a.m. to midnight. authorities in sonoma county spent the day searching for a possible meteor. but tonight they still haven't found anything. a helicopter flew over the area. just before 1:00 this afternoon several people called to report a bright flash in the sky. they said it looked like a glowing firing ball streaking across the sky. one person thought it was a plane crash. emergency crews have ruled that out. reports came in from all over

the north bay. >> a bright object as it was burping out of the sky. reported by a partnership in the bodega bay. it was somewhere south of this location, in the area of valley ford. >> early this morning, nasa launched a satellite from vandenberg air force base. but the afternoon reports are not likely related to that. now to the man who always has his eyes on the sky let's turn it over to meteorologist drew tuma. the dry forecast may be changing. >> the record warmth today is just one day. we had a beautiful bright day today. quiet skies. and that's going to be the trend overnight tonight. where all the activity is right now in the midwest. a mess is setting up. a large area of low pressure is developing right around colorado and bringing heavy snow showers to parts of the upper midwest. and all of this is going to translate east over the next 24 hours. areas like philadelphia new

york city, boston are in the crosshairs for another winter storm. some areas could pick up a foot of snow, like chicago as the sun breaks tl morning. live look outside right now. gorgeous, beautiful, quiet. just a light breeze out there. 5 to say 10 miles per hour. but that breeze is going to be enough to keep the fog limited. so the forecast does call for patchy fog but it won't be widespread and it won't be dense thanks to the wind keeping our atmosphere mixed up, so to speak. cooler and cloudier day on sunday. next chance of rain looks like friday evening into saturday morning. right now temperature-wise, 53 in oakland. 55 in san francisco. 51 in san jose. napa currently at 39 degrees. santa rosa checking in with a temperature of 46 degrees. satellite radar shows changes heading our way in terms of our sky tomorrow. cold front just off to the west has a lot of cloud cover associated with it. we're going to get scraped by some of the cloud cover over the

next 24 hours. veiled cloud cover tomorrow, peeks of sunshine here and there. the high pressure to the south is going to switch our winds overnight to more of an onshore breeze. as we go throughout our sunday, the overshore wind will koof our temperature. the ocean water temperature only in the upper 50s right now. so temperatures cooler tomorrow. also added moisture into our atmosphere in the form of clouds. long-range forecast, we're looking for any sort of moisture. we may find it on friday night into saturday morning. the question is how far south can this moisture spread. our current guidance has the rain stopping right around san francisco and keeping much of the rain in the north bay. we'll have to keep an eye on this, see if the rain can spread into the south bay over the next couple of days. nonetheless, this is our next chance to see any moisture next week. 49 we're dropping to in richmond. 47 in san francisco. falling to 44 in san jose.

good evening. in tonight's headlines, san francisco public defender jeff adache had a jail house conversation tonight with the man accused of dismembering a body and putting it in a suitcase. he will represent mark andrus in court. andrus will be arraigned next week. police took him into custody last night after getting a tip he was living in public housing in the tenderloin.

some people are spending the night somewhere else after a four-alarm fire. no one was hurt. police at uc davis are trying to find out who spray painted swastikas on a jewish fraternity house. they believe it's related to students asking uc regents to stop investing in businesses connected to israel. tonight there are now 84 cases of measles reported in 14 states, including here in california since the start of the year. a new case in new york may have exposed hundreds of thousands of commuters. as abc news reporter explains, the threat extends now from the big apple to this weekend's super bowl game. >> reporter: from coast to coast, a growing danger is spreading. the measles. the latest warning in new york, infected college student boarded an amtrak at penn station. >> if you get a fever, you need to check with your doctor. >> reporter: the trip went from

new york city to albany. possibly exposing hundreds of thousands of commuters along the way. the country has confirmed dozens of cases in 14 states. that includes arizona, where super bowl xlix is just a day away. 1 million people converging in phoenix for the big game, a recipe for disaster if an infected person showed up. >> you want to make sure no one goes to that setting who potentially could have mees else. >> reporter: medical students from the university of arizona will be on hand to spot people with measles-like symptoms. doctors' offices are fielding phone calls from concerned parents. the virus lives in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. anyone without immunity can get infected. many doctors blame parents who don't get their kids vaccinated. >> we should be fully informed what is in each and every

injection that goes into our kids' bodies. >> they're putting the community at risk your child at risk. just not okay. >> reporter: abc news, washington. whitney houston's only child is in a medically induced coma tonight. the daughter of the late singer and r&b singer bobby brown was found face down in her bathtub in her home this morning. a friend found her and called police. she was rushed to the hospital. investigators say there's no evidence of drug use at this point. last night though, 21-year-old posted photos of herself online. they don't show any signs of obvious distress. >> i don't know how long she was in the bathtub before anybody discovered her. >> brown's mother, whitney houston, died in 2012. authorities found her dead in a bathtub at the beverly hilton in beverly hills. the chemist widely considered the father of the birth control pill has died.

he died of complications of cancer yesterday at his home in san francisco. he was a professor emeritus at stanford and most famous for leading a research team in mexico city that developed a synthetic molecule that became a key component of the first birth control pill. he wrote a book how the pill changed his life. last year he told the chronicle he was tired of talking about it. he also wrote poems, short stories and plays. he was 91 years old. more than 2 million vehicles are being recalled for the second time because of faulty air bags. the national highway traffic safety administration says the latest recall involves these seven models made between the years 2002 and 2004. the air bags may inflate while the car is running. they were already under recall for faulty air bags. the carmaker's original attempts to fix the defects only worked about 85% of the time. they also say about half of the

vehicles involved in the new recalls are also subject to a separate recall related to defective air bags made by ta cata. east san jose matters, that's the message of more than 100 volunteers who came out to clean up the neighborhoods surrounding arbuckle elementary school. city leaders joined community members cleaning up and hauling off truckloads of trash. they say it's the first step in taking back control of their neighborhood. >> it shows that we care and want to do something about this neighborhood to improve it. we have a lot of other things to do in terms of this neighborhood, crime, fixing up facilities. and providing more services. >> cal trans has also made a commitment to help clean up the area. coming up it's a substance in almost everything, but does it do more harm than good. activists use the super bowl to take came at an ingredient found all over your house including in your food.

this year, it's a parody doritos commercial that's gone viral, billed as the ad that the company doesn't want you to see. dan ashley has the story. >> reporter: this video you're watching now has 12 million online views. created by a global organization called some of us. executive director is based in san francisco. >> this campaign has taken off like no other campaign we've done. >> reporter: the video features a couple falling in love-their shared love of doritos, getting married, and off to a honeymoon at a tropical rain forest. they arrive to find the forest has been mowed down to plant palm oil trees. the spoof is aimed at dorito's parent company pepsico that buys more than 500 tons of palm oil a year. >> it's one of the biggest contributors to deforestation. >> reporter: palm oil is now the most widely used vegetable oil in the world in about half of

all the packaged products in your grocery stores. that includes many cookies, chocolate, peanut butter lotion, even lipstick. sometimes palm oil is clearly labeled. but it can be labeled under dozens of different names. it's exploded because it's cheap, the trees grow very fast and some call it a miracle crop. but palm oil can have a dark side. >> it's connected to massive scale human rights violations and environmental destruction across the world. >> reporter: he's with the rain forest action network which shared their video of serious destruction in indonesia. >> these are some of the most biologically diverse forests in the world and they're just being cleared, tens of thousands of acres at a time to put in these long rows of palm trees that become biological deserts. we have species like the orangutan who have been pushed to the brink of extinction.

>> reporter: they're studying it over the last 20 years. on the ground and using nasa satellite images. this one shows the heavy smoke believed to be coming from thousands of fires to clear land for palm oil trees. >> it's bad. the clearing just from the indonesian part of borneo alone with the emissions equivalent to all the automobiles in canada. >> reporter: several big companies including pepsico have worked to make sure the crop is grown responsibly in the future. but progress is slow and environmental groups are demanding corporations are doing more to save rain forests before it's too late. >> it's totally doable. kel lockall we're asking is for pepsi to do the same. >> reporter: pepsico insists it is committed to using sustainable palm oil. a spokesman said in part, some

of us continue to mischaracterizations. activists are not giving up. the rain forest action network is focusing on quaker granola bars, also owned by pepsi. >> we posted pepsico's full statement along with the entire spoof dorito ads and palm oil information on our website abc7news.com. if you're making a last-minute grocery run before the big game tomorrow, expect to fork over more money for party staples. the cost of beef, and beer, are 23% higher than last year. chicken is up 30%. and you'll pay 50% more for coffee. corn, on the other hand, is down 6%. maybe the worst part is the higher prices are happening despite a "wall street journal" report that there's been a drop in prices.
