>> good morning, only carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday february 1st. let's start with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. we will start with a pattern change for the new month with a cooler on shore flow. we had temperatures much much cooler with 30s this morning around the bay. up in the north bay, with 38 in napa, the clouds not a problem yet, but it is out with the delta with five mile visibility. 38 in livermore. contrast this to the low 50s in san francisco. so we will be looking at a cooler day today. right now temperatures sit as much as 20 degrees cooler in spots. but yesterday, wow we had the 80 in santa rosa. we won't be looking at those numbers again for quite some

time. it was a cooler on shore flow. more clouds. temperatures still above normal. we will talk about the downward trend coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. thank you, lisa. arain meant is scheduled early this morning for a man in connection with a dismend body found in a suitcase in san francisco. people in the building where suspect mark pgh andrus was staying say they are in shock. lisa amin gulezian has the details. >> you will be in court to defend him? >> jacques that's what we did. >> the public defender came to the jail to visit accused killer mark pgh andrus. he is accused of killing a body dismembering it, stuffing it in a suitcase and dump. >> at this point the case is

under investigation. >> he points to a photo on this surveilsens video. it shows a man driving a suitcase just two blocks from where the body and suitcase were found. they came to the public housing unit in the tenderloin after getting an anonymous tip. the man with his head covered is mark andrus. he didn't officially live here. 959-year-old has lived here on and off for about a year though. he bunks with a friend on the fourth floor. this man lives next door. others are shocked this a man seen regularly in the building could be accused of something like this. >> my roommate, she got kind of a afraid of him. but i said this is a city and sometimes you see things like that. >> in if san francisco, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> the mother of one of four men shot to death in haze valley

last month claims san francisco investigators are not doing enough to find the examplar. the 19-year-old man was killed january 9th while sitting in a stolen car on paige street with three other black men in their early 20s. three other victims had gang ties and guns were found inside the car. the young man's funeral was yesterday and the mother said she set up a trust fund to find those responsible for his death. >> we want multiple private investigators to put in and put fear in those young people to let them know you cannot keep it a secret and you cannot go and start executing anyone let alone four at a time. >> police have not made any arrests in the case them say they are stepping up patrols to head off any more violence. this morning dozens of people remain out of their home after a four-alarm fire tore

through a rural victorian in the western part of san francisco. we have new video of the home at mcallister and scott street. piles of debris on the ground. the fire burned 24 apartments just north of alamo park. firefighters were there well into last night. it was scary for people who found themselves running for safety. >> i ran inside to get the cats, and then while i was doing that the police pounded on all the doors in the building and said out now. and one very nice police officer, i don't know who he was, helped me for a minute to find one of my cats because i couldn't find her. >> the cats are okay. no one was hurt. red cross is helping people who need food, clothing and shelter. a business in san francisco's mission district and rallying residents for people who lost their home and belongings in another fire last

week. we have details from dock's clock on mission street. >> throughout the night people brought in their donations of clothes and other items to help survivors of the fire. owner of the bar said she didn't think twice about organizing the event. >> it can happen to anyone which is why you go help the people because it could be you next. you never know. >> this and all matching funds will be added to a go fund me account which already has $60,000 pledged. according to a guy who set up the account, he helps to work with a legal nonprofit to divvy up the cash. among those who can really use the help is billy and his family. >> our feign concern now is our dad. he's in hospital in very critical condition right now. >> he was one of the last team to be rescued from the fire. he's pictured with his wife. she's still rattled by the fire, her husband's injuries, and the fact that they are now all homeless. >> we are hanging in there and

she's still in shock, you know. >> right now the family of the man is trying to figure out how to pay for his funeral expenses. he was the only person killed in the fire. >> [crying] [speaking foreign lane] >> she said it's sad but there are some things that happen that only god understands. he was originally from el salvador and his family and trying to find out how to send his remains back home. abc7 news. >> black smoke from a fire in solano fire could be seen all over the area yesterday afternoon. 8 acres of grass caught fire in

a small piece of florida panhandle a marsh near the grizzly iron wildlife area. firefighters aren't sure how it started." crews could not reach the fire because it was surrounded by water, which is also why they aren't too concerned about it. this morning police are searching for the person who spray painted two large swastikas on a jewish fraternity house near the u.c. davis campus. it happened early yesterday morning. the fraternity has condemned it as a hate crime saying it threatens to rekindle tensions on campus. they believe it's in response to the students passing an advisory resolution asking them to stop the connection with business necessary israel.

>> it happened friday and saturday morning the jewish students have these marks on their doors. breaking news out of san jose where three people are dead following a fatal accident. it happened around 202 this morning near the connector ramp to interstate 80. they received reports of a car on fire. both that car and nearby trees were engulfed in flames. no word yet on what led to that crash. fire destroyed a $120,000 aspen martin vantage yesterday afternoon after the owner crossed the golden gate bridge heading into san francisco. the driver said he heard someone yell your car's on fire as he pulled on to marinea boulevard near the palace of fine art, and then he saw smoke billowing out the back where the engine was located. he wasn't hurt. he said he only had the car for

? there is new video purport to go show another execution by the isis group. they have killed the second japanese man they were holding hostage. richard canteen has more. >> the video was released just as the sunset in the middle east. the man is on his knees and above him the executioner brandishing a knife. the british accented english marking the assassin is reported for the eighth time to be the killer of a foreign hostage in an isis video. his victim 47-year-old journalist. captured last year and subject for negotiation toss trade him for this woman. the woman is under a death

sentence in jordan for a terror attack that killed 60 people. jordanian people called it off because they had no proof a second isis hostage in the year, a captured jordanian pilot was still alive. >> i will never never forgive them for this act. we will never be defeat bid terrorism. >> experts fear he may have given isis a propaganda . as isis mystery man intelligence say they know his name and they are on his trail. richard, abc news new york. >> people in san francisco are fighting back against a landlord who they say is harassing them.

$5.9 million and most of the money went to supporting a water bond and a rainy day fund. his opponent spent $7.1 million. $3 million from his own pocket. compare toes those numbers to the 2010 election. brown spent $36 million and mitt spent $178 million in a losing effort. that was a record for the state. scientists estimate only about 10% of all the species on earth have actually been discovered. but 2014 was a very good year. researchers with the california academy of science necessary san francisco have confirmed the discovery of an astounding 221 previously unknown species. that demonstrates there is still quite a lot to learn about our fragile planet. abc7 news anchor dan ashley has the details. >> bay area scientists are constantly traveling the world

to unlock the mysteries of biology. but even when they find a plant or animal believed to be a new species, it can take years to confirm it. in 2011 abc7 news went along on an expedition to the philippines. that's where one found this weird thing more than 3,000 feet deep in the ocean. >> it's a war eel. >> most of smaller. >> it's three times the lent of the previous known one and larger. it's a lost war eel. >> he was sure he had a new species but the work was just beginning. >> you have to x-ray them because there are no many small bones and vertebrae within the body. >> you also have to to disect the bones in the eel's float to compare them with other known eels. >> here you see the little small teeth within the throat bones.

>> add in dna analysis and three years of research and yes, it's a new species. >> you have to know the cast of characters if you want to understand the ecology and the biology of the oceans. >> the eel is just one of 221 new species confirmed by the academy of scientists last year including a tiny elephant shaw rue. ants, a ghost fish from new zealand, and fossilized teeth that prove the existence of an ancient shark. when possible the sample is preserved for future research but it takes live specimens to learn now specimens actually behave, and for many there's a long way to go. >> we have more than 6,500 species of frogs that have names but we know so little about them. >> one barely known species is a clawed frog from cameroon

discovered two decades ago. now critically endangered. academy scientists recently flew some of them 8,000 miles to the aquarium in golden gate park. they have one very unusual feature, giant pant holes. the adult frogs are now on display for visitors. while behind the scenes tiny tad poles are hatching as biologists experiment with water quality and food to find out what they need to grow to full-size. >> to unlock the secrets on how to raise these guys. >> dan ashley, abc7 news. >> scientists say this is a great age of discovery for new species of amphibians, but at least a third are threatened with extinction and we know so little about others it's impossible to assess their statnous the wild. authorities are searching for a possible meteor but they still haven't found anything.

a sheriff's helicopter flew over the area west of valley ford. just before 1:00 yesterday afternoon several people called police reporting a bright flash of light in the sky. they said it looked like a flowing fireball streaking across the sky. one person thought it was a plane crash but that's been ruled out so reports came in from all over the north bay. >> a white object burning as it fell out of the sky. >> purported by a person -- reported by a person here in bodega bay and it was south of this location somewhere, you know, in the area of valley forge. >> early yesterday morning n.a.s.a. launched a satellite from vandenberg air force base, but yesterday's reports said it's not likely related to that. so -- >> yeah, that and the crazy weather yesterday. >> my goodness, was it like 74

in an francisco? >> exactly. out of control. 80 in santa rosa. much cooler today. we are looking at a light on shore flow. some differences day-to-day beginning with a 5 to 10-degree cool down today, maybe more in spots. live doppler hd shows some of the cloud cover that will be moving in today. not much in the way of fog. a little out by the delta but temperatures are much much cooler here's a look from the sutro tower cam. good visibility with 52 in san francisco. good morning oakland, 49. san carlos 46. we are looking at numbers from the mid-40s from san jose to half moon bay. morgan hill, a cool 40 degrees. and right now from emeryville, look at these temperatures. dropped into the 30s. the dewpoints are lower and the numbers are significantly cooler with 36 and fog out by the delta. petaluma 39.

napa 38. it will continue to drop another couple of degrees. we will look at temperatures throughout the morning hours to be pretty cool but typical for this time of the year. some areas of forks not too widespread. we will look for cooler and cloudier conditions today and rain is headed our way by late on thursday. the mild differences are huge right now so eats hard to pinpoint when and how much rain we will be getting. big time cooling overnight since you were sleeping. 23 degrees cooler in livermore, 16 trees cooler in half moon bay. we aren't going to make up any of these differences and that will lead to temperatures much cooler but still above normal. here's our radar and satellite composite. a weak system will be pushing into the pacific northwest and we will be on the tail end of that bringing in high clouds today so the weak on shore flow today allows for the cooler numbers that will take us into the beginning of the work week. morning fog, and then it looks

like the ridge will be pumped up again before another weak system heads our way. we will be up and down throughout the next several days and by the latter part of the work week is when we can look forward to a stronger system. as we go through several days you will notice the weak systems but we will stop this on thursday. you will see the rain up to the north coast but by friday looks like the heaviest rain up through sonoma county and some of the forecast models want to bring it down through monterey. others want to keep it to the north with the bullseye north of the golden gate. looks like several inches but can't quite yet decide where that will be falling. so in the meantime we will look for some clouds today. cooler numbers ranging from the low 60s from half moon bay. 65 in san mateo. look for about 66 palo alto. that's a good 7 degrees cooler than yesterday. so no 70s, but a pleasant afternoon and the accuweather seven-day forecast looking for cooler and cloudier conditions. morning fog tomorrow.

looking at numbers ranking from the upper 30s. and, of course, the bay bridge and emeryville camera. 36 in fairfield. temperatures are much, much cooler. that's certainly what you will notice when you step outside this morning. we will have a light onshore flow today and that will bring temperatures down for everyone into the low and mid-60s which is still above average but big changes from yesterday because yesterday was so warm. we will talk about the changes for the rest of the week, which include a return to more february-like readings and also february rain. that's coming up. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. there are now 84 cases of measles reported in 14 states since the start of the year including here in california. and a new case in new york may have exposed hundreds of thousands of commuters. as abc news explains, the threat extends from the big apple to this afternoon's super bowl. >> from coast-to-coast, a growing danger is spreading, the

>> i do not know how long she was in the bathtub before anybody discovered her. >> this incident comes nearly three years to the day whitney houston died in a bathtub at the beverly hills hotel february 11th. >> this morning cff medical center will begin transporting new patients at the new admission bay in san francisco. after nearly a decade of planning and building, this is opening day. all together 40 ambulances will be involved in the big move starting at 7:00 this morning. the $1.5 billion medical center consists of three hospitals, one for children, one for women, and another specializing in cancer patients. today is the nfl's biggest game of the year, of course, the super bowl . taking a live look from glendale, arizona where kick off gets underway at 3:30. this year there will be a new field for the super bowl

>> dozens ever young girls in san francisco got to try out several new sports yesterday to see which ones clicked. san francisco rec and park celebrated women and girls in sports at golden gate park. girls ages 5 to 12 got a taste of many sports and rotated from sport to support, meaning new coaches and learning how to play. a spokesperson said it's about more than being physically healthy, it's about giving girls young confidence and helping them grow emotionally. golden gate ferry will add an 8:40 ferry run for 9 months to handle a growing number of growing commuters. officials say about 6,000 riders

and that weak onshore flow. the next chance of rain coming our way is thursday or friday and right now the forecast models really having a tough time deciphering where the rain is going to be and how much. so this morning, as you step outside, it is cool along the coast. but remember, yesterday we started out in the 60s in these spots. we are 20 degrees cooler and it feels 20 degrees cooler. we were just abnormally warm yesterday. we will look for the clouds. there's a weak system that will be push through the pacific northwest today and tomorrow and that will' lafora few high clouds and a shift in the winds. but once this system passes through, we will look for the ridge to lightly re-establish itself and still have the mild readings and plenty of sunshine before a more significant system heads our way thursday into friday. temperatures today still upper 50s to low 60s from lake tahoe. mid-70s in los angeles. so even when the numbers are coming down, it's still really

spring-like around the bay. in the south bay look for 67 today. 68 santa clara. so a good 5 to 7 degrees cooler on the peninsula. look for 65 redwood city. you were in the mid-70s yesterday. 60 pacifica. out of the mid-70s for you. and downtown 10 degrees cooler san francisco. north bay numbers a pleasant afternoon but no 80s. 67 napa. and 65 san leandro. high clouds around. nice afternoon. a little more typical, although we don't know what typical really is for january nowadays. the accuweather seven-day forecast then shows the temperatures actually coming up tomorrow afternoon after the morning fog, and then a slight dip. you will notice temperatures will be once again pretty above normal before we get back to seasonal readings with the rain coming through maybe thursday night into friday, perhaps lasting into saturday.
