>> good morning i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, february 1st. let's start with a look at the whether but meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, everyone. we have a cooler day ahead and a much chillier start. there are a few clouds. there's a little bit of fog from the coast to santa rosa. but by the delta where it is 37 degrees we have a mile and a half visibility. more 30s this morning from napa to petaluma. low 40s on the coast. remember yesterday in livermore it was in the 60s. so starting out much, much

cooler. look for some high clouds and a slight shift in the wind. so we are still slightly offshore. we become onshore today, and that means cooling temperatures. still above average. we are coming down at least 10 degrees from questioned's readings giving us more mid-06ths around the bay. we will pinpoint the temperatures for the rest of the bay and talk about when the rain is coming back. it is in the seven-day outlook. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news this morning out of san jose where three people are dead following a fatal excellent. it happened around 2:00 this morning on 101 near the connector ramp to interstate 280. authorities say they received reports of a car on fire. both the car and nearby trees were engulfed in flames. no word yet on what led to that accident. one lane of southbound 101 remains closed this morning while police investigate.

arraignment is scheduled early this morning for a man in connection with a dismembered body found in a suitcase in san francisco. people in the building where suspect mark andrus was staying say they are in shock. lisa amin gulezian has the details. >> you will be in court to defend him? >> yeah, that's what we do. >> the public defender came to the jail to visit accused killer mark andrus. andrus, seen in these surveillance camera stills, is believed to have dismembered a body, stuffed the head and torso into a suitcase and then dumped it at 11th and market. >> we will enter a plea of not guilty and then begin the investigation of the case. at this upon the case is under investigation. >> he points to a photo on this surveillance video. it led to his arrest. it shows a man driving a suitcase just two blocks from where the body and suitcase were found. investigators came to this public housing building in the

tenderloin after getting an anonymous tip. the man with his head covered is mark andrus. he didn't officially live here. a long time resident told me the 59-year-old has lived here on and off for about a year. he bunks with a friend on the fourth floor. this man lived next door. >> others are shocked this a man seen regularly in the building could be accused of something like this. >> my roommate, she got kind of afraid of him. but i said this is a city and sometimes you see things like that. >> in san francisco, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> the mother of one of four men shot to death in hayes valley last month claims san francisco investigators are not doing enough to find the examplar. -- find the keller. the 19-year-old man was killed january 9th while sitting in a stolen car on paige street with three other black men in their early 20s.

police say that three of the victims had gang ties and guns were found inside the car. the young man's funeral was yesterday and the mother said she set up a trust fund to find those responsible for his death. >> we want multiple private investigators to go in and put fear in those young people to let them know you cannot keep it a secret and you cannot go and start executing anyone, let alone four at a time. >> police have not made any arrests in the case. they are stepping up patrols to head off any more violence. this morning dozens of people remain out of their home after a four-alarm fire tore through a rural victorian in the western addition of san francisco. this is new video of mcallister and scott street. piles of debris on the ground. the fire burned 24 apartments

just north of alamo square park. firefighters were there well into last night. it was scary for people who found themselves running for safety. >> i ran inside to get the cats, and then while i was doing that the police pounded on all the doors in the building and said out now. and one very nice police officer, i don't know who he was, helped me for a minute to find one of my cats because i couldn't find her. >> the cats are okay. no one was hurt. the red cross is helping people who need food, clothing and shelter. a business in san francisco's mission district is rallying residents for people who lost their home and belongings in another fire last week. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has details from doc's clock on mission street. >> throughout the night people brought in their donations of clothes and other items to help survivors of the fire. owner of the bar said she didn't think twice about organizing the event. >> it can happen to anyone

which is why you go help the people because it could be you next. you never know. >> this and all matching funds provided by google will be added to a gofundme account, which already has $60,000 pledged. according to a guy who set up the account, he helps to work with a local nonprofit to divvy up the cash. among those who can really use the help is billy and his family. >> our main concern now is our dad. he's in hospital in very critical condition right now. >> he was one of the last team -- last people to be rescued from the fire. he's pictured with his wife. she's still rattled by the fire, her husband's injuries, and the fact that they are now all homeless. >> we are hanging in there and she's still in shock, you know. >> right now the family of the man is trying to figure out how to pay for his funeral expenses. he was the only person killed in the fire.

he talk with our media partner. >> he -- [crying] [speaking foreign language] >> she said it's sad but there are some things that happen that only god understands. he was originally from el salvador and his family and is trying to find out how to send his remains back home. abc7 news. >> black smoke from a fire in from a solano county fire could be seen all over the area yesterday afternoon. 8 acres of grass caught fire in a small piece of florida panhandle a marsh near the grizzly iron wildlife area. firefighters aren't sure how it started. crews could not reach the fire

because it was surrounded by water, which is also why they aren't too concerned about it. this morning police are searching for the person who spraypainted two large swastikas on a jewish fraternity house near the u.c. davis campus. it happened early yesterday morning. the fraternity has condemned it as a hate crime, saying it threatens to rekindle tensions on campus. members believe it's in response to the students passing an advisory resolution asking them c regents to stop investing in businesses connected to israel. >> the fact it happened on thursday and all weekend there were tweets, facebook posts, and then saturday morning the jewish fraternity had swastikas on their door, it's tough not to draw that conclusion. ." another university is working with the students to figure out what to do next.

and the man above him the executioner, is brandishing a knife. the british-accented english man marking the assassin is reported for the eighth time to be the killer of a foreign hostage in an isis video. his victim this time is a 47-year-old journalist. he was captured last year and was a subject for negotiations to trade him for this woman. the woman is under a death sentence in jordan for a terror attack that killed 60 people. jordanian people called it off because they had no proof a second isis hostage in the deal a captured jordanian pilot was still alive. >> i will never, never forgive them for this act. we will never be defeated by terrorism. experts fear jordan may have given isis a propaganda coup.

>> it can further increase their standing. as for the isis mystery man, intelligence authorities say they know his name and they are on his trail. abc news, new york. >> western conference governor scott walker said he is seriously considering a bid in the 2016 presidential run. coming up on "this week" he discusses his likelihood of running and what he calls gaps in the field of likely republican candidates. he has a nonprofit group designed to boost his political ambitions. you can catch it right here on abc7 news this morning. scientists estimate only about 10% of all the species on earth have actually been discovered. but 2014 was a very good year. researchers with the california academy of sciences in san francisco have confirmed the discovery of an astounding 221 previously unknown species.

that demonstrates there is still quite a lot to learn about our fragile planet. abc7 news anchor dan ashley has the details. >> bay area scientists are constantly traveling the world to unlock the mysteries of biology. but even when they find a plant or animal believed to be a new species, it can take years to confirm it. in 2011 abc7 news went along on -- with the academy of sciences on an expedition to the philippines. that's where one found this weird thing more than 3,000 feet deep in the ocean. >> it's a war eel. >> most are a lot smaller. >> it's three times the length of the previous known one and much larger.

it's a lot of war eel. >> he was sure he had a new species but the work was just beginning. >> you have to x-ray them because there are no many small bones and vertebrae within the body. >> you also have to to disect the bones in the eel's float to compare them with other known eels. >> here you see the little small teeth within the throat bones. >> add in dna analysis and three years of research and, yes, it's a new species. it's critical to understanding life on earth. you have to really know who is the cast of characters if you want to understand the ecology and the biology of the oceans. >> the eel is just one of 221 new species confirmed by the academy of scientists last year, including a tiny elephant shrew. 110 species of ants, a ghost fish from new zealand, and fossilized teeth that prove the existence of an ancient mega-mouth shark. when possible, the sample is preserved for future research but it takes live specimens to

learn now specimens actually behave, and for many there's a long way to go. >> we have more than 6,500 species of frogs that have names but we know so little about them. >> one barely known species is a clawed frog from cameroon discovered two decades ago. now critically endangered. academy scientists recently flew some of them 8,000 miles to the aquarium here in golden gate park. they have one very unusual feature, giant tad poles. you can see one on the left and the other one on the right. the adult frogs are now on display for visitors. while behind the scenes tiny tad poles are hatching as biologists experiment with water quality and food to find out what they need to grow to full-size. >> we are hoping to unlock the secrets on how to breed these guys. >> dan ashley, abc7 news. >> authorities in sonoma county spent yesterday searching for a possible meteor but they still haven't found anything.

a sheriffs helicopter flew over the area west of valley forge. yesterday afternoon several people called police reporting a bright flash of light in the sky. they said it looked like a glowing fireball streaking across the sky. one person thought it was a plane crash but that's been ruled out. so reports came in from all over the north bay. >> a white object burning as it fell out of the sky. >> purported by a person -- reported by a person here in bodega bay and it was south of this location somewhere, you know, in the area of valley forge. >> early yesterday morning n.a.s.a. launched a satellite from vandenberg air force base but yesterday's reports said it's not likely related to that. lisa, could it have been a weather atlanta? >> i'm not sure about that. but did you hear about the 165-year-old record broken in san francisco yesterday?

no rain. 165 years. still in the city and no rain for the month of january. now we are looking at brighter horizons because we have rain coming back into the forecast. just how much and when egoing to fall is a little bit in question. live doppler 7hd showing some clouds on the coast. you will see more of those today and more of an on shore push. still right now the winds are really offshore with the high pressure ridge still over us right now. 51 in san francisco. it is 49 in oakland. a cool 43 in san jose. half moon bay, yesterday you were in the 60s. 45 right now. that's more like it for early february. and these numbers really feeling like the season. in the 30s from petaluma to fairfield. 39 in santa rosa. 36 in napa with a little fog out by the delta. at times visibility has been

reduced to about a mile. concord right now is at 42. livermore out of the 30s, up to 40 degrees right now. numbers ranging from 11 to 16 degrees cooler from livermore to the delta. much cooler on the coast. a few degrees cooler in mountain view. and oakland 8 degrees cooler than you were this time yesterday. here's a look from our roof camera. we are looking at a gentle sea breeze today. later on in the afternoon not much fog. we will see more of it tomorrow. and temperatures will still be above normal but they will be cooler than yesterday. some high clouds, and then looks like the ridge breaks down all together and we will finally see some wet weather. it's a long system. the rain is still yet to be determined how much and where. here's a look at the highs versus the average. this is where we should be this time of year. upper 50s to low 60s and forecasted highs today in the mid-and upper 60s. so this is still six to eight

degrees above average but yesterday we were at much as 15 and 20 degrees above average. so slowly coming down, although we will see plenty of sunshine for the week ahead. the system will be pushing through the pacific northwest, and that brings in the clouds and the slight cool down today. then it pushes to the east of us and we will look for a slight bump up in the temperatures. so you can see the rainfall in the pacific northwest. here's a look at san francisco. forecasting a high today into the mid-60s. and then tomorrow upper 60s. then your cool down. here comes the rain by the end of the week. long-range forecast shows that the systems to the north stay there for the next couple of days and then as we get through thursday and friday, there is the rain line. hopefully it can push south and bring more generous rain into the south bay and the central coast. we will see. 65 in fremont today. 67 in san jose with mid-60s in san rafael. the accuweather seven-day forecast, that little bump up

>> welcome back. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey carolyn, what a shot electric mt. tam. you see the morning glow this morning. and with the clear sky we have certainly cooler temperatures with 39 in morgan hill. no offshore winds it talk about this morning.

51 in san francisco. it's 46 in san carlos, and over into the east bay we are looking at temperatures cooler with 40 in livermore, 36 up in the north bay and napa. and patchy morning fog. we will see a wind shift this afternoon that allows for a slight on shore push, a few high clouds, and that brings cooler temperatures. still above normal, but plenty of 60s instead of 70s today. and we will pinpoint when the rain arrives for the week ahead in a few minutes. carolyn. >> all right. thank you lisa. there are now 84 cases of measles reported in 14 states since the start of the year, including here in california. and a new case in new york may have exposed hundreds of thousands of commuters. as abc news explains, the threat extends from the big apple to this afternoon's super bowl. >> reporter: from coast-to-coast, a growing danger is spreading, the measles. the latest warning in new york an infected college student

anybody discovered her. >> this incident comes nearly three years to the day whitney houston died in a bathtub at the beverly hills hotel february 11th. >> this morning ucf medical center will begin transporting new patients -- or patients to the new hospital in mission bay in san francisco. after nearly a decade of planning and building, this is opening day. all together 40 ambulances will be involved in the big move starting at 7:00 this morning. the $1.5 billion medical center consists of three hospitals, one for children, one for women, and another specializing in cancer patients. today is the nfl's biggest moment of the year, of course, the super bowl . taking a live look from glendale, arizona where kick off gets underway at 3:30. this year there will be a new field for the super bowl commercial line-up.

>> the nfl's decision to donate 30 seconds of airtime for the ad, which could have sold for $4.5 million, comes as the league deals with backlash from its handling of domestic violence cases involving plays -- involving players. bay area law enforcement officers are cracking down on drunk drivers this sunday. various agencies will be providing roving patrols during and following today's super bowl matchups. the stings will be at undisclosed locations all over the bay area where they have high incidents of dui crashes and arrests. happening today hundreds of runners will take to the streets of san francisco for the 32nd running of the kaiser permanente half-marathon. the race, which begins at 8:00 begins and ends in golden gate park. the event also features a 5k run which stays completely in the

morning w a colder start we will look for a somewhat seasonal finish. still above average but at least we are out of the 70s. felt strange yesterday. the 80 yesterday didn't feel right. next chance of rain coming in on thursday into friday. hopefully lasting through saturday. at this point it looks to focus in the north bay but the models just are not agreeing. this shows the average highs. upper 50s to low 60s and the forecasted highs today. compared to yesterday, it's going to feel cooler but compared to where we should be for february 1st it's still quite mild. eventually, by the end of the week we will see certainly the numbers more in line with early february. so the rainfall is up to the north and that system allowing for high clouds the wind shift, and then there's several systems that will graze northern california. but not until late thursday when the action starts. 68 in fresno, 64 in monterey
