willow. things back to normal soon there is no explosive in that pack.age looks like things are returning to normal in the next few minutes. >> good evening. a former stanford swimmer was arraigned today to hear the charges against him at the santa clara county courthouse in palo ale toe for allegedly raping a woman on campus. vic lee is live. >> reporter: sexual assaults a big issue on college campuses across the country and prestigious schools, dart mouth will university of virginia, vanderbilt cal poly san luis obispo and stanford two cases in two years. one last year and now this 19-year-old brock turner afathered palo alto courthouse this morning with his daughter and gather, who had flown in from their family home in ohio. >> like to enter pleas of not guilty today. >> reporter: turner stood before the judge as attorney mike

withal armstrong pleaded not guilty on his behalf. not guilty to five felony sexual assault charges. the stanford freshman and member of the swimming steam accused of sexually assaulting a woman after they met at a fraternity party last moment. the prosecutor told reporters this case is unique. >> there were two heros that came forward and want i want to say about them if they are listening, thank you. thank you for doing the right thing. >> reporter: those hero two grad students ridingby cycles who say they saw the woman lying on the ground with turner on top of her. the two said they chased turner as he ran, tackled him and held him until police came. turner told investigators he was fondling the woman but never had sex. the woman told police she was drinking heavily blacked out and doesn't a thing. >> i think it's extremely unfortunate for everyone involved. >> reporter: in this courtroom today was a stanford junior computer science student.

was robbed in their home on amethyst way. their car stolen. sunday morning on buchanan street, two men tied a woman up taped her mouth will shut and ransacked her apartment. authorities do not believe the three home invasions are related. fortunately, all of the victims are okay. water remains shut off for several blocks in san francisco after a water main break this afternoon. crews are, woulding right now to fix the eight-inch maine break at union street and fill more. rushing water flooded parts of two businesses. officials say they could turn it back on within an hour. not yet known what caused the breaks but the pipe was from the 1960s. >> we have 100 miles of pipe here in the city some dating back to 1903 1900. of course, we are in process of upgrading and restoring or replacing pipes but base clay, lot of pipe out there that is age and we need to do these upgrades. >> the public utilities

commission aims to replace 15 miles of ageing pipe every year. bay area oil refinery workers have begun their first strike in 35 years. sky 7 hd shows you the target of that strike, the tesoro refinery in martinez. it comes after contract talks broke down between you united steal workers and tesoro over the weekend. workers shutting the refinery down slowly. it should be fully offline late they are we can. union leaders say the sticking point is understaffing and that but the reese finery workers at risk. tesoro said in a statement that it's bar gained in good faith and will continue to do so. a silicon valley college makes the difficult decision to end its football program. menlo college board members say that long travel distances and tripling costs make the football team simply unstable much the college president says the decision will allow the school to pour more resources into the school's other 12 athletic programs. all current football players can retain their scholarships, some will be offered roster spots on other teams at the school.

the bay area was well represented at super bowl 49. first, there's patriots quarterback, tom brady, the bride of san mateo how about the guy he is hugging, you see him right here on the field? everybody is learning his name today, but for years, he has been a big deal in the san mateo county town of woodside. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live at woodside high school with the story. tiffany? >> reporter: well, alma that man's name julian edelman better remember it certainly know it here at woodside. when he was a player, his coach called him a heat-seeking missile, he always wanted to be a part of the biggest game and the biggest plays in those games. last night was certainly no exception. >> the kid makes the cash. >> reporter: sports memorabilia crowds steve's deck. julian edelman's presence everywhere his photo on the wall helmet on the shelf, highlights on tv. >> he was here and the rest of them were here, you can see there was a difference. >> reporter: he coached the former woodside standout in

firefighters are looking into the cause of two fires overnight at a vacant vehicle repossession and tow business in east oakland. the first fire was around 2 in the morning, firefighters doused the flames in half an hour. four hours later a second fire was reported inside the building on 105th avenue. unclear if the fire had rekindled from the first or sparked by something else. damage is estimated at a half million dollars. donations keep streaming in for dozens of people displaced by this fire at 22nd and mission streets in san francisco last week. the website, go fund me shows more than $100,000 has been raised so far. this's up from $60,000 on saturday. the fund-raising organizers says the money will be divided among the victims. well part -- san francisco lawmakers debated today whether to throw their weight behind a state measure calling for a total ban on the purchase or

sale of ivory. it would strengthen a state law already on the books that is designed to prevent the animal's extinction. abc7 news reporter carolyn tyler reports. >> reporter: what do people like about ivory? >> the craftsmanship. the craftsmanship. >> reporter: this merchant in san francisco's china town is one of dozens selling i havery. did he not want us to go inside his shop because of the controversy. critics say 96 elephants are being slaughtered every day for their ivory tusks. >> on the, the elephants are -- the tusks are taken while they are still alive. they are not always dead. it's very barbaric. >> reporter: california passed a law decades ago banning the import or sale but created an exception for ivory imported before 1977. and that has allowed illegal sales to flourish. san francisco's china town is said to be right behind new york and los angeles in the sales of

ivory. a report by the natural resources defense council found 80% was likely to be illegal but this merchant says he is not one of the bad guys. >> leftover. leftover from the '70s. no new pieces. >> reporter: now protests like this one last fall, state lawmakers will consider a blanket ban on buying or selling any elephant ivory and rhinoceros horns. today a committee of san francisco lawmakers debated whether to support that measure. new york and new jersey already have strict laws. this tourist shopping in chinatown says legal or not she would not buy ivory. >> there's lovely lovely jewelry, but there are things that are better that are safer for animals. >> reporter: under the proposed bill if you already have ivory objects, you can keep them. in san francisco carolyn tyler, abc7 news. part of mount diablo state park is now off limits to the public through the end of july.

rangers closed the castle rock and pine canyon areas yesterday to allow american per grin falcons to breed. the falcons were once endangered and now fully protected in california. the falcons nesting in the parks since the late 1800s. signs are posted in the park to educate the public about these predatory birds. a quarantine to solve a dangerous pest that attacks fruit trees in santa clara county. agricultural officials found them in an area north of an existing quarantine zone in san jose. the pets can carry a disease that can cause a tree to produce bitter, misshaped fruit before the tree dies. the new quarantine area adds 61 square miles to the existing quarantine of 150 square miles. residents with backyard citrus trees are being asked to not transport or send citrus fruit or leaves out of this impacted area. some state lawmakers think california is going too far to encourage conservation. >> 7 on your side's michael

finney is here with that and other consumer headlines. >> this first one is super interesting, california made history by becoming the first state in the country to ban plastic bags the grocery stores that ban begins in july much the two pieces of legislation aimed to repeal the ban. one would repeal the 10 cent fee on paper bags. another would cancel out the legislation all together. supporters of the bills argue conservation is good but government should not get involved in how taxpayers should conserve. >> you go to trader joe's do they offer plastic bag, no. whole foods, they offer a plastic bag, no. go to cost coe offer a plastic bag, no. my thing is that retailers should be able to make the decision themselves. >> in at dig to the pills, a referendum effort is under way to repeal the plastic bag ban as well. the bad guys have discovered a fake texting can be as profitable as fishing on e-mail and a whole lot easier to pull off. at&t is the latest company to be called out.

privacy experts say the text sent by the telecom giant can be easily spoofed and that it is replicated boy the bad guys with e-mail. graphic have to look legit and grammar perfect to fake out most of us with e-mail with texts there are no logos and the abbreviated speech make it hard to spot bad grammar and therefore fakes. the advice here is don't click on a link from a text ever. the production of college textbooks is a $10 balance year industry and now there is a major new player. amazon is striking deals with universities setting up co-branded textbook websites. university of california davis is on the program. schools of that size can expect to receive around $300,000 a year gore participating in the partnership. amazon says students could save nearly $400 each per year and in some locations, actually receive their books the very next day after they order. this could start a textbook

congressional republicans don't like the tax chances in the president's $4.5 trillion budget. they want to boost taxes on corporation and republicans say the deal is dead on arrival. the president's budget puts serious money behind government tech, call forced 105 million to create new digital strike forces in 25 different agencies. the goal is to manage technology in-house relying less on independent contractors. the idea is being push pieded by former google engineer mikey dickerson, known as the guy who fixed healthcare.com after its disastrous launch that you may recall. the city of burlingame will consider a proposal to make it more like palo alto lining the broadway corridor. merchants along the street want the city council to lift a decades old restriction on the number of restaurants on road way. right now, there can only be 28 of them. merchants say eaters create foot traffic and helps all businesses along the street. >> look at palo alto, university
