we do have to begin now with this growing measles outbreak. people sick in at least 14 states. >> and this morning it's become a political issue with high-profile republicans questioning the need for vaccinations. abc's elizabeth hur joins us with the latest. elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, reena and good morning to you, t.j. as you know, health officials are adamant. this is a matter of public safety and vaccinations work. but with some parents still on the fence, some politicians are now weighing in causing quite a stir. more than 100 people in 14 states and mexico have now contracted the measles prompting doctors and even president obama to sound the alarm urging parents to vaccinate their children. but this morning, politicians chiming in are creating a controversy. new jersey governor chris christie saying vaccination is a parent's choice and fellow republican white house prospect kentucky senator rand paul agreeing noting that vaccines should be voluntary and even linking them to mental disorders.

>> i've heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking, normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines. >> christie later backtracked a bit saying "there is no question kids should be vaccinated." paul's staff also fine-tuning his remarks saying he believes that vaccines have saved lives. >> measles is around, and the more kids who are not vaccinated, the more they're at risk and the more they put their neighbors' kids at risk, as well. >> reporter: and while health experts continue to stress vaccinations, indeed, save lives hillary clinton adding her two cents taking an obvious dig at the gop hopefuls tweeting "the science is clear, the earth is round, the sky is blue and vaccines work. let's protect all our kids." #grandmothersknowbest. and did you know to enroll in school, all states now require children to get certain vaccinations but some states do

allow parents to opt out by obtaining a waiver so that option for a parent still there in some states. t.j., reena, back to you. >> okay, elizabeth hur, thanks so much. we turn now to the weather. that brutal blast of arctic air, well, it's moving in this morning following that nasty winter storm that buried much of the midwest and northeast leaving at least seven people dead. >> those plunging temperatures are refreezing all that slush and melting snow and shutting down schools in detroit and boston for a second straight day. boston digging out from another 16 inches of snow. back-to-back storms making it the city's snowiest week on record. scrambling this morning to clear the way for their super bowl champions, the patriots forced to postpone their victory parade until tomorrow. and abc's rob marciano got a firsthand look as the massachusetts coast took yet another pounding. >> this is a navigational bell buoy. it weighs over 14,000 pounds. it's supposed to be a half mile

offshore, but the storms have been so violent this week, it ripped it right off its mooring. >> reporter: in new york, the bad weather triggered a manhole explosion that injured two people on a brooklyn street. the blast caused by road salt, melting snow and ice seeping into the underground system. and icy tracks may be to blame for leaving hundreds of commuters stranded on a busy subway line for more than two hours. digging out turned deadly near chicago as three people suffered heart attacks while shoveling snow. and many travelers are finally making it home after a nightmare at the airports. more than 6,000 flights canceled since the start of the storm. well, millions of people are trying to navigate dangerously slick roads as they head out this morning. >> for more on what they can expect today and in the coming day, let's turn to accuweather's stef davis. hello, stef. >> thanks reena and t.j. well the storm is finally over across much of the northeast. high pressure building in for our tuesday allowing conditions to improve.

dry weather with plenty of sunshine, but we'll have a cold flow coming in from the north and that will send temperatures dropping. daytime high in buffalo only 19. 24 the daytime high in the big apple, well below average for this time of year, and we are tracking the threat for some more snowfall across the i-95 corridor for our thursday. we'll continue to keep an eye on this storm track. a storm will also come in from the pacific bringing rainfall across the pac northwest later on this week. rain reaching as far south as northern california. reena and t.j., back to you. >> stef thank you. new this morning the latest pictures of fidel castro. it shows the 85-year-old engaged in what appears to be a lively conversation with a university student. nearly two dozen images were published virtually simultaneously on the websites of cuba's main state media outlets around midnight. it's the first time we've seen castro in five months. well, president obama has sent his 2016 budget up to capitol hill.

the $4 trillion plan reflects his view that the recession is over and it's time to make some investments. it includes new taxes on corporations and the wealthy while adding tax credits for the middle class and new spending to upgrade transportation and education. but it's just an opening bid in negotiations with the republican congress. nearly 200 passengers aboard a cruise ship got sick at sea apparently with the norovirus. the royal caribbean "grandeur of the seas" returned a day early to baltimore. the cruise ship says most of the passengers who got sick were treated on board but it was because another passenger had a medical emergency not related to the norovirus and that's why the ship was forced to return. a bizarre sight in atlanta. a major highway completely deserted shut down just before the evening rush. police say they got word that -- you see it there -- a tube-shaped object was attached to an overpass on what's called the downtown connector. the bomb squad moved in, detonated the object but it backed up traffic for miles. monica lewinsky ended ten

years of silence about her affair with former president bill clinton in a magazine article published last summer. her essay for "vanity fair" focused on the culture of public humiliation. it earned her an award nomination from the american society of magazine editors. lewinsky was at the awards ceremony last night where abc's david muir was the host. >> i know it's a cliche, but i really am honored and humbled to have been nominated, especially alongside the caliber of such incredible other writers in my category and to be here with such amazing people in the room. so it's great. >> lewinsky lost the award to a longtime writer for "the new yorker," but we may be hearing more from her in the future. she made it clear her silence is over even if hillary clinton runs for president. well, still ahead here, have they hit rock bottom? what's behind the latest increase in gas prices. and terrifying touchdown caught on camera. a pilot struggling to land a plane in whipping winds. plus, new this morning

oh, it had to happen. gas prices are starting to inch up according to aaa. the average price is $2.06 a gallon up two cents from a week ago but still down nearly a dollar and a quarter from one year ago. analysts point out that this is the time of year when oil refineries shut down some operations for routine maintenance which can limit output. a megamerger of office supply chains could be in the works. "the wall street journal" reports that staples and office depot are in advanced talks to

combine -- depot -- >> where are you, in england? >> yes. i don't know. i've been watching a lot of the wrong stuff apparently lately. staples has a market value of about $11 billion while office depot's value is estimated around 4 billion. analysts do warn the proposed deal would likely get a very close look from antitrust regulators. this next story will be in american english. according to bloomberg struggling electronics retailer radio shack is in talks to sell some of the stores to sprint and even to amazon which we know that company has been making a push to open traditional stores. the new york stock exchange has already started the process of delisting radio shack and has suspended trading of its shares. >> you've been watching too much "downton abbey." >> "downton abbey," is that what it is? >> that's what it is. >> i love the accents. i'm from arkansas. i got a southern accent. >> i know, that's why it's so weird. >> depot. >> here's a hit movie, "frozen," now spawned a short sequel, "frozen fever." it's a seven-minute film that

ventilator to help her breathe. it's unclear how long the 21-year-old had stopped breathing and what effect that might have. well, up in the air on the other side of the world, a passenger plane trying to land in birmingham, england, ran into some serious resistance from the wind. it had just gotten into position when a nasty gust of more than 50 miles an hour engulfed the plane and jostled it. despite all the shaking, the plane eventually managed to make a safe landing. medical news. it turns out that less is more when it comes to jogging. a danish study finds heavy joggers die at about the same rate as couch potatoes. researchers say strenuous running can damage the heart over time. they say light and moderate joggers had the longer life spans. that was defined as running for an hour a week at about five miles an hour. >> best report all week. >> even jogging will kill you. what do you do, folks? just have a good time. do it in moderation. all right. if you take one of these

popular nutritional supplements you need to hear this. new york state demanded four top drug chains to stop selling a lot of these products because of fraudulent claims. four out of the five products tested contained none of the ingredients listed on the labels. gnc, walgreens, walmart, target were all told to stop the sales of these things. the super bowl ended badly for nfl hall of famer warren sapp. he was arrested at a phoenix hotel encharged with soliciting a prostitute and with assaulting two women. police say he admits to the prostitution charge but denies the assault. sapp was fired from his job as an analyst after the arrest. he is due back in court on february 23rd. browns quarterback johnny manziel has checked himself into rehab. he has a history of hard partying and trouble with alcohol. the 22-year-old was the first freshman ever to win the heisman trophy but he was drafted 22nd last year partially because of his work ethic and off-the-field antics. his rookie season with the browns, not spectacular. kind of a somber return home from phoenix as you can imagine

for the seattle seahawks. >> they were still treated as heroes as hundreds of fans greeted them at sea-tac airport. >> in boston, though, the victorious patriots arrived back home in a snowstorm because of all the snow their victory parade had to be pushed back to at least tomorrow. also back from arizona, our guys at espn. he's stan, i'm neil. we're back from phoenix and the super bowl. that was a good time. >> yeah. >> now we're back to doing sports here in los angeles. you go first. >> yeah, things have been going great for the hawks. they won 19 in a row, the fifth longest streak in nba history. visiting the pelicans in new orleans. look at anthony davis on the putback. davis back his first game after missing a game with a groin injury, had 19 points and 7 rebounds in the first half. demarre carroll trying to keep the hawks in it. but not a great shooting night for atlanta. eric gordon had 20 points, six pelicans in double figures. the streak is over as the

a couple of cars collecting in the far left lane. everyone else is moving fine. as we take to you san jose, beyond the shark tank, a couple of cars is all. >> thank you leyla. police in alameda of hoping someone out there provides the tip that lead them to the man who sexually assaulted an eight-year-old girl inside a discount girl near hayward. our reporter is outside the store with more of what is uncovered. this store has security. we have seep the security guard posted at the front door and he is wandering around. there is a camera. you can see the monitor showing the two are on camera. the camera is capturing an image for you to look at. this is the man they are lookingo man described as thin and young at 18-20 years. he molested an eight-year-old girl in the store's toy aisle.

>> the male cornered the little in the aisle and grabbed her and forcefully put her hand down her pants. >> this happened at the 99 cent store on sunday afternoon on mission boulevard in hayward. the girl's mother was right around the corner when it happened. customs complain that there are sometimes a number of homeless people loitering in the parking lot but police say they think it would be unusual for a homeless person to commit this type of crime. they do not think that has anything to do with it. the victim was taken to children's hospital to be checked out and police are hoping someone will recognize the man and give them a develop news this morning a possible break in the case of a dismembered body found in the suitcase in san francisco. police investigating if the human remains found last week were those of a vallejo man. the san francisco chronicle
