announcer: live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> ahh the sight and sound of something we haven't seen in a long long time. rain falling in the bay area. ending a remarkable 43 day dry spell. >> the rain is a welcoming sight. the wind knocked down trees and power lines. we haven't seen a day like this since christmas eve. this is a live picture from emeryville. you can see the dark skies out there. >> it's ominous. wind gusts there 54 miles an hour. that was earlier today.

we have team coverage this afternoon. laura anthony and spencer christian are with us. >> here is what's happening outdoors. a wide path of rain from the north bay to the golden gate. more impulses are developing and moving in our direction. this is the picture. we have areas, wide, expansive areas of heavy rain. it reaches the flash flood watch that was in effect earlier. the first wave moved through so quickly, it didn't produce the rainfall totals expected. the second wave is possible the flash flood watch could be reinstated. we looped the radar image. a long trail of moisture at the golden gate. it will sweep through the south bay and east bay as well. wind advisory until 4:00. the winds are gusty.

the strongest winds near the coastline. 38 miles per hour at fso. this is going to continue this gusty pattern into the evening hours, perhaps overnight as well. three inches in mount st. helena. growing totals in the south bay. a quick animation starting at 7:00. the heavier rain is tapering off into showers. tomorrow could be a relatively calm day compared to today. sunday, heavy at times. >> thank you spencer. in the east bay, the storm impact has been mixed scattered power outages and downed trees, but no flooding. >> laura anthony is live with us now in alamo where a tree just did serious damage. >> reporter: that's right, larry. it's been all about the wind in the east bay so far. it just started raining again but not too hard. here in this parking lot, you can see the remnants of the tree

that fell and where it broke off on the tree behind the car. there were four cars that were right in the line of the tree when it went down. it's the wind more than the rain, that left the mark on the east bay so far. in alamo, this huge tree took out power lines falling across this drive without hitting anything else. not so lucky in downtown alamo where a branch fell from a pear tree damaging four cars. linda got the worst of it. luckily, her puppy was inside, but escaped unscathed. >> the windshield is broken and i can see a couple dents on the top. thankfully we'll have to clean it off to see if there's anymore. i'm happy i was out of it. >> reporter: in martinez, sandbags on main street. no threat from the nearby creek which remains well below its

banks. meantime, in walnut creek, people welcomed the weather like a long lost friend. >> i'm so happy it's raining. i couldn't be better. >> reporter: other not so much. >> i love living in california because it's hot and sunny, not this. >> reporter: so, it's been about holding on to the umbrellas today. we have seen numbers of them fly out of people's hands and go inside out. there have been scattered power outages as well in several locations associated with a tree coming down. most of them in the open hills. in alamo, laura anthony abc 7 news. >> thank you. in san francisco, a large tree is causing problems right now. the tree fell on power lines near geneva avenue around 2:30. this is next to the amazon playground. the fire department is not letting anybody drive by. crews are on the scene working

to clean it up. in the north bay, a lot of rain, but not many problems. the school is closed for the day. you can see the flooding there. there have been reports of several downed power lines in that area. >> most businesses and residents in the north bay are closely watching the creeks as the rain continues to fall. >> the wineries are welcoming the storm with open arms. amy hollyfield shows us more. >> reporter: this morning's rain has been steady, soft at first then slowly gaining strength, nothing too drastic or dramatic, just how city officials like it. >> if it rains like this for five days perfect. no issues. you know, it's when it comes down really hard that's when you get the issues. >> reporter: they know it could be a long day, maybe a long weekend. they will be watching this creek

carefully. it tends to spill over banks sending unwanted water into the vibrant downtown square. >> we have sandbags cleaned the creeks and basins. >> reporter: the wineries will gladly take on the rain. they know there could be some side effects if it's too much too soon. as people in the farming community tend to do they are hoping for the best. >> we are super excited about it. we need the rain so bad. we have been waiting for it. it looks like it's finally here. we are okay with it. we want it to come down as hard as it can, as long as it can. >> reporter: he showed us a picture of the huge oak tree that knocked out power. they lost tens of thousands of dollars in sales. they do not expect a repeat performance. >> they are projecting six to eight inches we can handle that. >> reporter: downtown businesses are ready.

they have sandbags and tarps out. it's lining the blocks everywhere. everyone has these out. the public works department saying no problems reported. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> not the rain but the winds are causing problems at the area airports. at fso, flights were delays 3 1/2 hours. 172 cancellations and 377 delays, just at sfo. most of the cancellations are regional flights. the impact at oakland and san jose are less severe. passengers are advised to check with carriers for the latest updates. california still needs help with the drought. the federal government is offering $50 million in relief. that money will be spent on the water project for efforts such as water transfers drought monitoring for endangered species and diversifying water

supply. >> complex difficult stuff, managing to protect fish wildlife vegetation, water flow and support the formers and the great economic activities they engage in. >> governor brown declared a drought emergency last january. california is entering the fourth year of drought. demonstrators protest a controversial proposal by san francisco's archbishop involving the personal lives of teachers. >> addressed the plans to change faculty handbooks at four high schools in the diocese. they are asking teachers to live public and personal lives according to church teachings. >> i'm adopted by gay parents. for the archbishop to say it's toxic to our society and evil

hurts me. my parents treat me the same as every other parent would. >> parents, students and staff fear if they move forward with the clauses, they could eliminate antidiscrimination for employees at the high school. it's not clear whether the archbishop will address the concerns. a warning for parents of unvaccinated children. they are sending out robo calls for handling the measles outbreak. if a student comes down with the measles, all unvaccinated kids will be forced to stay home for three weeks. >> we are trying to make sure parents really understand what the repercussions would be if there were a case of measles at their child's school. >> last month, the district sent home letters urging parents to get their children vaccinated. they will offer them at some schools for the public health department. no cases of measles in san

francisco county. late this afternoon the state announced there are 103 cases of measles in california. there are new developments in the labor dispute in the port of oakland. containers will not be loaded or unloaded as part of a temporary work suspension. workers at 29 ports are involved. they have been working without a contract for nine months. the association claims there's a work slowdown for the past three months and says it doesn't want to pay a premium for less work. the last complete shutdown was in 2002. contract talks continue. new job numbers are out. it could mean the u.s. economy is rapidly improving. >> the labor department said in january, employers added 257,000 jobs after 329,000 jobs were added in december. >> 423,000 in november. the november and december gains were much higher than the

a young woman was murdered over ten years ago and the case has gone cold. the police department released a video to try to capture the public's interest and generate new leads. chris has the story. >> reporter: a case that frustrated the police for years. >> there's not a day that doesn't go by that it's not on my mind. >> reporter: the 21-year-old was shot standing with family and friends outside the q cafe

downtown. she would die a short time later at the hospital. now, no leads no suspects, no persons of interest. a crime that left many puzzled. one of the first off fers to respond to the shooting. >> when a shot rings out people scatter. people are screaming. people are going every which way. it was a chaotic scene. >> reporter: 14 years later, the police are turning to the community again. they hired a company to make a video, hoping to stir up anyone's memory of what may have happened. >> the shooter may have identified himself to other people. >> reporter: he was there that night. sharing this could lead to a break in the case. >> the relationship between the person who was the shooter and the person who received the information may have changed. >> reporter: maria's family remained quiet over the years. her sister agreed to be interviewed for the video. >> what they would bring to me

would be priceless. it would help me to heal so that i can move forward. >> reporter: an attempt to mend their broken heart. there's a $100,000 award for information leading to an arrest and conviction. if you have information to help, call the police. abc 7 news. the highway patrol says a woman who died in a traffic accident this morning was driving the wrong way on the freeway. the 22-year-old victim's name was not released publicly. she was going to wrong direction on southbound 880 when she slammed head on into a truck. the truck driver is a 26-year-old man. he and two passengers are in the hospital in serious condition. responded to safety concern for riders in india. the ride share company says they will launch a panic button to

notify police in case of an emergency. a safety net will allow them to share trip details and their location with as many as five people. a woman sued uber for failing to properly screen drivers claiming she was raped. the new features will be available in india in a week. a health insurance company wants people to be on the lookout for fraudulent e-mails after a hack. they accessed 80 million records from blue cross blue shield insurer anthem including names social security numbers and e-mails. be careful for scam e-mails that are meant to look authentic. chinese hackers may be to blame for the breach. mark zuckerberg is stepping up with a massive donation to san francisco general hospital. zuckerburg and his wife are giving $75 million to the hospital's foundation.

strong winds continue to prevail. here is the wind gust animation starting at 7:00 this evening. we'll see gusts up to 55 miles per hour. during the late night and overnight hours we continue to see strong gusts up to 11:00. during the early morning hours, the winds begin to moderate and taper off by tomorrow morning. breezy conditions. we'll no longer have the damaging gusts. here is a live view from the camera. these are the forecast futures. wet and windy. showers taper off tomorrow. more rain and wind coming our way sunday. it will be a stormy weekend. right now the satellite image this is the current storm pushing on shore. waves of wind and rain accompany that. a second weaker system coming through tomorrow to produce scattered showers then a major storm like today coming in on sunday. let's skip ahead. saturday night at 11:00 we'll

see areas of light rain and showers, pockets of shower activity. that will become more organized and more intense overnight by sunday morning, 8:00 widespread rain, heavy at times. much like today's storm. it will sweep through. followed by rainfall during the afternoon hours and evening. even into sunday or monday morning, lingering light rain and areas of showers. we have quite a bit of wet weather to come our way. in the sierra, wet as well. rain at lake level. snow levels from 8,000 feet or so. we will see one to two feet of snow with the current storm at the higher elevations. some of the lower elevations will see lighter snow and back to the bay area overnight pockets of rain and showers windy, still. overnight lows mid to upper 50s. mild overnight. tomorrow, look for cloudy skies breaks of sun here and there and scattered showers as well.

rain and wild winds. abc 7 reporter tweeted this picture of a fallen tree on crescent avenue. that tree took down power lines. meanwhile, in the south bay a surfer took on the waves near pacific state park. with the rain and wind had to be rescued. the person on the jet ski got there before the coast guard. the surfer was not seriously hurt. more trees down. creighs clearing a eucalyptus tree in palo alto. david, all the trees coming down, power outages there? >> reporter: lots of power outages. we are still getting wet. there's been a lot of breeze that has fallen in the south bay. a trouble spot we look for is the underpass. it's okay for now. we have had a lot of other trouble in san jose and surrounding areas.

when the wind kicked up police and fire units found themselves responding to multiple reports of trees and branches down. in los altos -- the noise alerted them trouble is brewing. >> we heard a loud sound that went from here to the other side. and, all of a sudden, we looked out. >> a crew was able to remove the branch and restore power to the neighborhood within an hour or so. >> a pole behind my house. i was worried that something happened there. right next door to that they have a transformer there too. i thought that went out. >> reporter: a short distance away a tall eucalyptus tree went across the southbound lanes of foothill expressway across from the veteran's administration hospital. fortunately, no vehicles were

hit as the large tree crashed on to the roadway. falling limbs snagged a power line forcing sheriff's deputies to block access to residents until a pg & e crew could respond. drains backing up rainwater. residents said it happens every time it rains. she calls it city to clear the drains. however, our photographer stepped in and cleared some of the debris. the pooled water quickly reached the drain. in other areas, entire traffic lanes and sidewalks were flooded. a bus bench and sign post were surrounded by water. vehicles plowed right through the water. it was a day drivers appreciated windshield wipers that worked. we could use a lot more good samaritans like collide, our photographer, to help clear the drains. the city crews are out here. pg & e crews are out police and firefighters are out as well.

we have more rain coming. we are live in san jose david louie, abc 7 news. >> thank you david. it is snowing, again, in the sierra. try looking at this. look at the snow coming down a short time ago from the camera at heavenly resort in lake tahoe. a mixture of snow and rain hit the mountains throughout the afternoon. it's expected to be a wet, windy weekend there. elevations above 8,000 feet could see two feet of snow by tomorrow morning. winds could gust up to 140 miles per hour. lower elevations could see four inches of rain. the terror group isis is claiming an american woman they had been holding hostage is dead. killed they claim when jordanian planes bombed where the hostage was being held. we have the story. >> reporter: the terror group isis is claiming an american

woman is dead killed when jordanian warplanes bombed where the hostage is being held. in a statement on twitter they identified the woman as a 26-year-old american aid worker. it's known isis was holding at least one american hostage, but this was the first time her identity was revealed. isis did not provide proof. american officials were not able to confirm the claim. >> we do not, at the present have evidence to correspond ob rate the claim. we will keep reviewing the information at hand. >> secretary kerry, our team is putting every effort behind finding any americans being held overseas. >> reporter: jordan was a partner in the fight against isis. they have ramped up their efforts after their killed a captured pilot held postage. the gruesome images of the pilot

being burned alive sparked widespread fury. several thousands marched through in support of the pledge of a military response to isis which claimed large parts of syria and iraq. >> no one against them. >> reporter: isis misled the public before. in a statement, some discrepancies about where and when she might have died. abc news washington. president obama was out today pitching a plan to offer free community college to students who can maintain a certain grade point average. the president answered questions at a town hall meeting at ivy tech in indianapolis. he talked about the agenda saying unemployment numbers are lower and wages are going up. president obama says his new budget will help middle class families. >> it means helping middle class families afford child care and

health care, make it easier to pay for college without taking on loads of debt. paid leave at work. help first time home buyers. helping people save for retirement. >> last week, president obama dropped a plan to scale back tax benefits for college savings accounts after being pressured by nancy pelosi. allowing peterson to play again is in the hands of a judge. he told reporters he finally felt like he had a fair hearing. he's been suspended at least through april 15th. he was charged with a texas child abuse case. he appealed the suspension in december, but was denied by an nfl arbitrator. they did not give a timetable. authorities in missouri are charging a mother with

kidnapping and child abuse for orchestrating the phony kidnapping of her own son. the mother, grandmother and aunt, all pictured here wanted to teach the child a lesson. his mother believes he was too nice to strangers. so they planned an elaborate kidnap. one day after school a friend of the aunt lured the 6-year-old into a pick up truck. he started crying when told he was never going to see his mother again. when he stopped crying, he shows him a gun. >> he must have been terrified. >> the boy was told he would be nailed to the wall. the kidnapper bound his hands and feet with plastic bags and covered his head. he was told he would be sold as a sex slave. the ordeal lasted about four hours. >> unbelievable. >> unreal. just ahead on nbc 7 news at 4:00, another new coach for the raiders. this will make niners fans sit

the super bowl winning team is heading to the raiders. the coach announced he's hiring a former teammate, ken norton jr. as the defensive coordinator. he spent the last five seasons for the seattle seahawks. he played 13 seasons in the nfl, won two super bowls with the dallas cowboys and one with the niners in 1995. you can see the highlight reels, punching out goalposts in memory of his father, ken norton. spencer remembers the great fights with mohammed ali. >> talking about the thriller how about the weather we have. a long line of rain through the bay area. we are getting a drenching.

the heaviest rainfall or some of the heaviest rain from vallejo to san francisco. southward. it's widespread. we have airport flight delays at sfo. up to 176 minutes basically three hours. local airports are not reporting delays. here is a look at the atmospheric river. it's high moisture taking aim at the bay area. it will continue to do so tomorrow. the aim will shift southward but come back up toward the bay area by sunday. we have a weekend of wet weather coming our way. mainly wet with the exception of the southern most part of the state. here is how things will ship up tomorrow. after a night of heavy rain and winds, cloudy skies with scattered showers tomorrow. another big storm comes in on sunday. the wet weather continues through the weekend. it is very much needed. >> keep it coming. thank you, spencer. still ahod on abc 7 news,

announcer: covering santa rosa berkeley and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. a man is now suing the state of new mexico after it told him his winning lottery ticket was a mistake. take a look. the little circles on the top right of your screen is what stands between him and $500,000 he believes he won. the lottery claimed they couldn't honor the winning scratch off ticket because of the small mark. >> we believe it's about matching numbers. he matched the numbers. they need to pay or basically, they are cheaters. >> his lawyer says the lawsuit isn't just about money it's making sure the same misfortune doesn't happen to anybody else. >> it's also about the money.
