>> good morning, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joinings you on this sunday february 8th. let's start with a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> rain is knocking on our door. here is doppler h of d. we are looking at some pretty good rain the next hour or two. it's accompanieddy gusty winds and maybe some flooding. on the filed side for temperatures, 59 in san jose, 57 oakland and a wind sizery has been posted with winds anywhere from 20 to 30 miles per hour

sustained winds, gusts 40 miles per hour and higher gusts up to 60 miles an hour in the upper elevations. we will look at the period of rain heaviest in the morning hours and a possibility of thunderstorms once the cool air moves in behind the system. we are still look at heavy rain in hay wood. and we will talk about how it lingers in monday coming up in a few minutes. carolyn. >> sounds good. with more, wet weather on the way, many people are bracing for another hit. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> it's a pain, but it's okay. >> being in the dark with a toddler for this long isn't easy. friday's storm snapped three power plays knockout power to 300 homes and businesses in

sausalito. >> the new poles are stronger. if it would have fallen a couple inches on our right it would have been on our car and the neighbor's roof. >> watch out for the tree! >> the tree man specializes in moving trees in tough conditions. this is video from a job in fairfax. >> the four-man crew had to pull out of some spots saying if there's a high wind, it's too dangerous. >> we're taking trees off houses. out of driveways and off cars. >> this is why pg&e set up in emergency operation center in san francisco. at one point 280,000 people were without power. most of them restored. they are looking for more problems. >> a lot of wind with wet soil,

that's the way the conditions are, the trees topple over and bring down lines and we expect a significant number of new outages. >> it will be in place until all customers have power restored. abc7 news. and this 80-foot monterey pine is being removed. it fell friday during the storm. luckily it fell away from the house, but it landed in the backyard of new neighboring homes, damaging a roof. the colorado insurance commissioner is urging people to check your insure scans do a home inventory. most don't cover flooding but will cover damage from falling trees or wind. for more information on what might be covered we have a link on abc7news.com. the storms are also bringing some much-needed snow to the sierra. you see flurries there yesterday from the lake tahoe tv heavenly mountain resort camera.

have gone through a red light in the intersection and hit by the pickup. it's not clear if the pedestrian injured were in the crosswalk or on the sidewalk and struck by the spinning vehicle. >> we just heard a car crashing and we came outside and we seen like people on the floor. >> people are still trying to figure out exactly what happened and determine who is at fault. new details this morning. police have arrested a man on charges in connection with a car crash that took the life of a young girl in cupertino last year. 58-year-old louis barnaby, jr. was taken in custody friday. investigators say they only discovered now he was under the influence. prescription drugs when he slammed his of s.u.v. into a car on highway 85 back in april. they said he was driving on the shoulder at a high rate of speed when he hit the s.u.v. which was parked on the shoulder. an 8-year-old in the s.u.v. were

killed and her brother and mother were injured. two people were pulled from a car that slid down an embankment in contra costa last night. it happened just after 6:00 off interstate 680. there were two minor injuries. a woman is in the hospital after falling off a cliff in pacifica. it happened around 5:30 last night near palmetto avenue on west line drive. crews had to drop down 200 feet to reach the woman and it took nearly 2 hours. neighbors said she was climbing along the secret water fall and got into trouble. she has moderate injuries but is expected to be okay. striking oil workers are make themselves seen and heard in the east bay. [chanting] >> at the oil refinery in martinez they walked the picket line in the rain yesterday. it's part of a nationwide work

stoppage. union employees say they are fighting for better staffing and training. replacement workers are on the job. ports, including the one in oakland, have stopped loading and unloading ships this weekend. on friday the group representing the port had a temporary work suspension. workers have been without a contract for nine months. the port association said there's been a work slow down for the last three months. the longshore workers union denies it. >> thousandches demonstrators took part in the march for climate leadership in oakland yesterday. they are calling on governor brown to ban fracking. that's a oil and gas extraction technique using high pressure water and chemicals. environmentists have given oil companies the green light to drill in california, despite say egg wants the state to be a leader on climate change.

a fire yesterday morning in san jose has been identified. 80-year-old jenne lived at the moss creek mobile home part. the home and carport were engulfed in flames when they arrived. jenne was found dead in the back of the home. no one else was injured. the wildfire south of yosemite is finally starting to die down. good news for firefighters working the round fire. nearly 40 homes were destroyed and two small towns remained a mandatory evacuation order >> there's still time to help residents impacted by a mass of fire in the san francisco's mission district last month. donations raised through gofundme will end tomorrow. more than $150,000 has been raced for those impacted by the

olympic gold medalist and tv star bruce jenner was involved in a four-car crash that left one driver left. it happened along the pacific coast highway in malibu yesterday. genre claims he was being chased by paparizzi when the accident occurred. so far police say there's no proof of that. seven people were injured which bruce generaller is okay. hundreds of tourists are coming into san francisco this weekend. the star princess and the queen elizabeth were embarked along the embarcadero yesterday. queen elizabeth is already back on the move after arriving from l.a. the ship is currently on a 112-night cruise but not all the passengers are staying on the ship for the entire voyage. >> power ball fever is about to really take off. nobody picked all six numbers in last night's $394 million draw. here are the numbers.

school. >> you need to show compassion. any questions? >> the entire school spends 1 hour on social emotional learning on fridays. what they discuss is discussed in every situation at home and at home. >> to see how other people are feeling and just be nice to people if they are feeling down. >> we see it play out when kids are learning math and science or engaging in collaborative learning and teamwork. when they are outside or sitting together in the cafeteria. >> studies have also shown that these kinds of programs help students feel more supported by their classmates and teachers. that sense of self worth often translates into academic success. >> we know from research that when a child feels safe in a classroom, they won't be feeling the negative emotionings and negative emotions really close down our ability to learn.

about 72 miles the heavier cells off the coast and up in the north bay you see a few returns right now by cloverdale and clear lake and we will continue to watch this as the area of low pressure and the front push on through. so this is other classic comma shape and this is where we get the cold air. once the front moves through the winds will stay very gusty. we are talking 50 miles per hour gusts along the coast. here's a look from emery skill. looks quiet. upper 50s san francisco. 55 san carlos. 59 half moon bay and fog in the inland east bay. the exploratorium camera, where things look nice and calm for the time being. 53 in concord with the fog. half-mile visibility there. quarter mile in livermore. and look at fairfield. three quarters of a mile three miles up in napa. once the rain moves in, the visibility actually will be improving. so rainy and windy today. possibility of a thunderstorm. and we will look for showers to linger into your monday morning

commute. the atlanta pictures show is right here winding you have pretty tight. it is going to be a fast mover. but we will be left not only with the gusty winds and showers throughout the day. so as we look at the wind gusts, you will notice the high are elevations in the next hour or so ramping up to 25 miles an hour. then as you go through 10:00," look at the coastal winds and even into the east bay. 20, 30 miles per hour wind gusts. here we are 2:00 in the afternoon and look at the winds. still out of the south. still gusting from 45 miles an hour. in fact, at the airport some problems there. and 35 miles per hour winds at san jose. 7:00 still railroad breezy out there. in the sierra nevada we are looking at a winter weather advisory from 4:00 this afternoon until 4:00 monday afternoon with 6 to 12 inches above 7,000 feet. a couple inches at lake level and very gusty winds there, as well. timing it out for you as we go through the next hour, notice it's right here in the north bay

along the coast pushing into the santa cruz mountains. 10:00 heavier rain into the east bay around livermore but look there's more. here comes the wind and by 1:00 in the afternoon looking like a few breaks but actually the pockets of sunshine will help destabilize the atmosphere even more and that's when we see a better chance of thunderstorms. 8:00 tonight we still have some rain. and until 11:00 scattered showers. rainfall amounts anywhere from half-inch to inch in east bay and up to 3 inches coastal hills. even in the south bay we should get about a half in top three quarters of an inch hopefully. today mid-60s. and very windy conditions with the scattered showers throughout the afternoon the possibility of a thunderstorm. 66 san jose. low 60s in richmond. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. lingering showers tomorrow and a few clouds on monday and we are looking dry and milder wednesday, thursday. low to mid-70s. in fact maybe some more record warmth here.

. >> welcome back everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, carolyn good morning. hope you had time to clean out our gutters and clean up from the storm we had friday because knock on our door another round of heavy rain and gusty winds. there's a wind advisory in effect and the rain is just about to push into the north bay. from point reyes, still off the coast from san francisco. notice the east bay is dry with the main rain about 56 miles away. so we will continue to watch the winds out ahead of the system ramp up to near 20 and 30 miles an hour. and behind the system is when we are going to have the gusty winds. colder air moves in and we could see the possibility of a thunderstorm. and the higher elevations could see gusts of 55 miles an hour. so we are looking at snow in the sierra. it will be high-elevation snow

in south san francisco to remember the jordanian pilot burned alive by isis. ♪ ♪ >> many jordanians and their supporters singing "my country, my country" in arabic. they had photos of the murdered pilot and they show unity and support for the country. >> it united the whole people. whether it's in jordan the runs, all over the world, it unites us as a whole group. that's what we are all about. standing together being united as a country. >> the group also chanted no more isis, denouncing and degrading the islamic militant group's horrific crime. >> this morning jordan is stepping up air strikes against isis after the militant group

released video last week showing the burning death of that jordanian pilot. coming up on "this week" john allen, a special envoy for the coalition to counter isis, discusses the battle with the crist group. you can catch it on" this week "at 8:00 this morning right here. president obama is scheduled to speak at asper security summit at stanford on friday. the summit will address topics such as increasing public-private partnerships and sober security information sharing. it will also address the creation and promotion of improved cyber security classes and use of more secure payment technology. following the summit the president will attend a democratic national committee fundraiser in fran. today's space x will try again to land a rocket on a ship in the ocean.

the launch will be the second attempt from elan musk's company. it's scheduled at 3:10 p.m. our time. scientists tried it last month but the unmanned rocket crashed and burned. the flight path is more challenging. if successful, this will be the first time a a rocket has landed on a floating platform. an incredible change seems to be coming on just off our coast. it's almost undetectable. and if it continues the results could be alarming. researchers believe the chemistry of the ocean is changing. it may soon below on oxygen. here's abc7 news reporter wayne freedman on how that dramatically could change life in the ocean and ours, as well. >> you might think of it as a liability from past and generations.

here's a look at the north bay. not much is going on. in fact, it's probably not reaching the ground. highway 101 through the park and petaluma. but offshore you see the darker shade of green. as we continue to slide south you notice in san francisco the atmosphere is moistening up, as well as into the south bay. but it's going to be until around 7:00 we get the leading edge in the north bay and by 9:00 it looks like it will be right over the bay area. but we still have the wind that will bring some very windy conditions throughout the day. breaks in the overcast that will prime the atmosphere for the possibility of thunderstorms. right on through the afternoon. it will get a little wild around here but welcome rain is certainly on the way. 57 san francisco. we do have fog. 58 oakland. the fog is over into the east bay. 59 in san jose. gusty winds half moon bay. our exploratorium camera looks quiet right now. 56 santa rosa. petaluma 59 and the fog is in concord and livermore with low

50s. anywhere from about 2 to 4-mile visibility there by the delta. a half-mile once the rain moves in. actually visibility improve and you have the rain to deal with it the wind. in fact it's going to get windier throughout the afternoon with the passage of the cold front. rainy and windy today. the possibility of a thunderstorm. and showers will linger into your monday morning. so our satellite composite shows the big slug of moisture offshore. this is going to push on through today. allowing for a pretty soggy sunday. hopefully you got the gutters cleaned on out because as we go through the rest of the day we have the wind accompanying the rain. this is higher elevations at about 6:00 right any. then as we go through 10:00, look at the winds cranking up at sfo. 35 miles an hour. coast up to 50 miles an hour and the delta and the north bay and the east bay all afternoon long. we have some very gusty winds. atmosphere colder and we will look for a few breaks in the

clouds to allow forces possibility of thunderstorms 678 so by this afternoon into tomorrow afternoon, the snow gets going in the sierra above 7,000 feet. anywhere from a foot to a foot and a half. a couple inches at lake level. and we will be looking at the gusty winds in the mountains as well. so timing it out for you you just saw on our live doppler 7hd that it's right offshore. by 7:00 the north bay and parts of san francisco should be getting wet. 9:00 10:00 the entire bay area look at moderate rain. some breaks after 10:00 11:00. but that's when we get into the colder sector of the storm throughout the afternoon. 1:00. and then the thunderstorms perhaps and of course the gusty winds. by the evening hours we still have pockets of rain and right through 10:00 11:00 you will notice still showers around 680. rainfall amounts through monday night so you know it will rain on and off through monday afternoon. anywhere from three quarters of an in top inch and a half in the north bay. coastal hills and the santa cruz mountains upwards of 2 inches,
