. >> good morning, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this february 8th. some much-needed rain is falling in the bay area. here's a live look from the golden gate bridge cam with the raindrops over the camera and here's video from just a short time ago from the embarcadero. hoods and umbrellas are out for people running or walking along the waterfront. let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen with a first check on weather and live doppler 7hd. >> hi, carolyn, good morning. we are looking at heavy downpours. still light rain in parts ever

bait area but it will be the gusty winds today. taking you closer to some of the downpours from petaluma to highway 101 and south of bodega bay. heavy rain in the east bay. light from concord in san ramon valley. heavier the sacramento valley. looking at 280, very wet, scattered showers and san jose. offshore some heavier cells. about 100 miles offshore some lightning strikes. we are looking at this moving into the bay area and in fact bringing the risk pretty high of some thunderstorms. with the wind gusts, fairfield up to 25 miles an hour. the winds are definitely ramping up. we also have fog so the visibility is poor. and a look at santa cruz right now. you see a few raindrops there. we will be going through this throughout the day. some breaks, but that's just going to allow the possibility of those thunderstorms. we will talk more about it in detail coming up. carolyn. >> thank you w this wet weather

people are bracing for another hit. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> it's okay. >> being in the dark with a toddler for this long isn't easy. friday's storm snapped three power poles, knocking out power to 1200 homes and businesses in sausalito. >> the new poles are stronger. if it would have fallen a couple inches on our right it would have been on our car and the neighbor's roof. >> watch out for the tree! >> the tree man specializes in moving trees in tough conditions. this is video from a job in fairfax. >> the four-man crew had to pull out of some spots saying if

there's a high wind, it's too dangerous. >> we're taking trees off of houses. out of driveways and off cars. >> pretty much nonstop? >> yes. looks like it will get worse again around here. >> this is why pg&e set up in emergency operation center in san francisco. at one point 280,000 people were without power. most have been restored. they are looking for more problems. >> a lot of wind with wet soil that's the way the conditions are, the trees topple over and bring down lines and we expect a significant number of new outages. >> the center will be in place until all customers have power restored. he's am, abc7 news. >> in berkeley hills, take a look at this 80-foot monterey pine being removed. it fell friday during the storm. luckily it fell away from the house, but it landed in the backyard of new neighboring homes, damaging a roof. the california insurance commissioner is urging people to

>> developing news from overnight. one person is dead following a crash involving two cars in los gatos. it happened just before midnight on highway 17 just south of highway 85. no word on what led to the collision. three people have life-threatening injuries this morning after they were hit by a car on south vaness avenue. that was in san francisco. it appeared about 8:00 last night. two pedestrians were injured. it involved a jaguar and a large pickup truck. the driver of the jaguar was also injured. witnesses said the jaguar may have gone through a red light in the intersection and hit by the pickup. it's not clear if the pedestrian injured were in the crosswalk or on the sidewalk and struck by the spinning vehicle. >> we just heard a car crashing

and we came outside and we seen like people on the floor. >> police are still trying to figure out exactly what happened and determine who is at fault. new details this morning. police have arrested a man on murder charges in connection with a car crash that took the life of a young girl in cupertino last year. 58-year-old louis barnaby, jr. was taken in custody friday. investigators say they only discovered now he was under the influence of prescription drugs when he slammed his of jeep into an s.u.v. on highway 85 back in april. they said he was driving on the shoulder at a high rate of speed when he hit the s.u.v. which was parked on the shoulder. an 8-year-old in the s.u.v. were killed and her brother and mother were injured. >> there was a fire at 20th

street and 16th avenue. you see all those flames there. investigators say the crew had the fire under control in 30 minutes. there were 15 people inside the triplex at the time. one person suffered minor injuries. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> knew this morning, police are investigating a two-alarm fire at a preschool in the north bay. it broke out before 11:00 last night at the children's learning center on steel lane in santa rosa. authorities say the building suffered extensive damage. there were no injuries. and still no word on what may have started the fire, but authorities say there were wires that were down in the area. >> you know there's still time to donate to help those residents impacted by that massive fire in san francisco's mission district last month. donations raised through gofundme will end tomorrow. more than $150,000 has been raised for those impacted by the

heavier downpours on and off throughout the morning. the winds have been picking up throughout the day. we have the front offshore. look at live doppler 7hd -- or we were looking at live doppler 7hd. can you get the graphics up? here's a look at lake tahoe where we are seeing higher elevation snow. in fact, we are going to see look at up to a foot and a half above 7,000 feet. here's how it looks right now. out of the southwest we are look at heavier down but as we take into highway 101, santa cruz looking at moderate rain, vallejo light rain. a little spot 2-iron south of emeryville. oakland looking at a heavier snow. as we go further south look at milbrae looking at wet weather and along the coast we have thunderstorms off to the south and west that will be pushing in. spotty showers around san jose and look at the heavy rain here.

this is a look what's coming in. with the rain, gusty winds. san jose 33 miles an hour and by the delta the winds as well. it was raining earlier here in santa cruz. upper 50s to about 60 in san jose right now. and a few drops on the lens. but more to come as the system pushes on through. 58 with the fog out by the delta, and livermore 58. here's a look at the visibility at miles. mile three quarters santa rosa, 2.5 napa. and concord just over a mile. so we will look for the rain to continue throughout the day today. but by the afternoon with a few breaks and a few areas of sunshine, could see some thunderstorms and the winds will get gustier throughout the afternoon. the common shape you see offshore that's all that has to push in. as it does, you will continue to see localized flooding and with the winds they are beginning to ramp up. wind advisory through 10:00

tonight. 20 to 30 miles an hour winds will be common with gusts over 45 miles an hour. 1,000 to 2,000 feet we could see gusts over 50 miles an hour. here's where the winds are going to be gusting by the noontime today. point reyes could see 50 miles per hour gusts. sfo already backing up two and a half hours and that's due to the wind and the wet tarmac. livermore winds over 30 miles an hour through 7:00. so in this area, you saw the picture, 6 could 12 inches of new snow above 7,000 feet. here we will time-out the rest of your day. 10:00, heavy downpours from the coast up to the north bay. spotty showers will continue throughout the afternoon. but we are still going to see the localized heavy downpours with the gusty winds and even the 'basketball more breaks and thunderstorms. at 3:00 we are still looking at pockets of rain into 8:00. and then by 10:00 not over quite

a volcano in southern guatemala is exploding rock and ash through surrounding towns. this is video taken yesterday. the mountain, known as the fire volcano, is located about 50 miles from guatemala city. it sits more than 12,000 feet above sea level. so far no evacuation orders are in place, but residents who live nearby have been put on alert. >> and the weather? >> a few heavier cells by oakland and 880. further to the west cells over the bay. look what is offshore. more in the way of possibility of thunderstorms and the winds gusting to over 35 miles an hour at times. >> wow. all right. that is going do it for us. thank you for joining us on the abc7 sunday morning news. i'm carolyn tyler along with lisa argen. the news continues online, twitter, facebook, all your mobile devices with our abc7 news app. we are off a bit early because of nba basketball.
