this is abc7 news. >> a mad dash to get people out of the way. strong winds picked up styrofoam construction blocks. and it tossed them to the ground. one person went to the hospital. good evening. >> more of this, as you can see just how windy it has been tonight. this video was shot on third street in san francisco. you can see papers and trash whip around. in vallejo the wind knocked down to a pib up truck and took power poles with it. 300 pg&e customers lost power. this is a look at the rain and the trees blowing around in this video which was shot

in the late afternoon. abc7 news meteorologist is here with our first check on weather and live doppler 7hd. >> in the last hour in downtown san francisco a wind gust was clocked at 53 miles per hour. still a rather active evening. live doppler 7hd will show you we are still tracking some showers. we will press to the street level along the peninsula and into the south bay. you can see heavier downpours. this is all pushing off to the north. as we track this and time this out over the next half hour or so the next in palo alto in 23 minutes. we move a bit to the north and hayward and pleasanton and even dublin seeing moderate shower activity. it is still breezy and the wind gusts out there you can see well over 30 miles per hour in a lot of spots. what you can expect early tomorrow morning as you head off to work and school scattered showers with the breezy winds and lows in the

mid50s. once this storm exits the bay area we will have big changes. the accu-weather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. katie? >> and now to abc7 news reporter who is live in walnut creek with a look at some of the damage caused by the winds. >> the rain has been on again-off again. here in wall thut -- walnut creek it took down two massive eucalyptus. crews cut them up and got them out of the intersection. walnut creek crews cut this massive tree apart. within a couple of hours most was turned into mulch. the wind and fallen trees had it blowing across the entire area. this tree was sliced apart as it fell across skyline boulevard and a block down the street another tree fell and just missed a house. but in berkeley, the owners of the prius were not as lucky.

this tree didn't get a direct hit, but the massive branches still caused some significant damage to the compact car. pg&e crews made sure any power outages were restored as much as possible. this supermarket were among the dozens of businesses and homes out for awhile. >> the power went out. >> most customers quickly left and save-mart workers moved fast to save foods. >> we had to put bags over us. pretty much nothing else. >> wait around? >> yeah wait around. >> earlier in the afternoon across east contra costa county rain and runoff clogged some street drainage. but the biggest issue was strong rain gusts. in walnut creek the wind whistled through trees and the city crews say the ma is sigh

eucalyptus that fell was the only call. abc7 news. >> and this is a live look at foster city where a tree has come crashing down on an apartment building. the entire third floor has been evacuated. we are told there are no injuries. this tree took out a gazebo and just missed the roof. no one was hurt. it caused part of a billboard to come loose in san francisco. police shutdown the area until they could fully secure the situation. flooding has been a problem tonight. in cupertino, two lanes of the deanza on-ramp were flooded and it caught most drivers by surprise as they hit the water in the dark. fortunately there have not been accidents reported. >> part of highway 9 was closed after a large tree branch fell across the roadway near redwood gulch road.

the trees trapped at least one car for a short time but no one was hurt. kristen sze and eric thomas will have more on the abc7 morning news. layla will keep an eye on your commute. the grizzly case involving body parts found in san francisco's south of market neighborhood has took an unexpected turn. the person of interest in the case has died. lilian kim is live at the hall of justice with hour on this story. lilian? >> the police chief confirmed he died after admitting himself to the hospital. this was four days before his death. the person of interest in the dismembered body case left san francisco county jail on tuesday a free man. >> i guess a little depressed, i guess. >> he describes the mood of

apparent drug-related causes. he went to his tenderloin apartment. during that time he maintained his innocence. >> i said how are you doing? it is good to see you around. he said, yes and i didn't know what the problem was. >> a security video apparently captures him wheeling around a scute case. that's where a suitcase was found. >> being that he died, it is not going to hurt the investigation right now. >> he is a former san francisco inspector. while the death likely won't have an immediate effect it won't come plaw case things later especially if another person of interest emerges. >> then the other party will lay all of the blame on mr. andrews because he is dead now. >> they suspect it is that of

andrew's friend who was missing. they have yet to determine a cause of death. they hope lab results will answer those questions. in san francisco, lilian kim, abc said news. >> a go fund me campaign to raise money for victims of the fire on mission street is close to its goal. people donated $160,000 in just 10 days. the goal is to raise $200,000 by tomorrow. the fire at 22nd and mission street last month killed one man and left 40 people without a place to live. if you would like to donate go to abc7news.com. more accusations against bill cosby tonight. a former model and actress said the comedian made sexual advances and lewd gestures on the cosby show. she made the accusations today. the 77-year-old cosby faces sexual assault accusations from at least 15 women. bruce jenner is offering condolences to the family of a woman killed in a multi-vehicle crash that he was involved in and he is

done tomorrow night on abc7 news at 11:00. let's head back to weather and the storm out there has seen plenty of damage guy the wind and the rain is still with us at this hour. we will show you pockets of rain moving through the bay area. showers are north of santa rosa, but we will police in closer to street level, around hayward. fremont and livermore. thts there are heavier downpours working off to the north and east. as we track this and time this out for you over the next hour the center of this cluster will be moving over livermore in the next 16 minutes around clayton and 37 minutes working into antioch about 51 minutes. we have seen healthy amounts of rain. san rafael, over an inch and a half. concord saw over an inch of rain. oakland was just shy of an inch and san jose is shy of half an inch of rain. the oner big story looking at our camera.

it is shaking at this hour. peak wind gusts are pretty impressive. 63 mile per hour wend gusts. wind gusts. we talked about san francisco in the last hour. just had a wind gust to 53 miles per hour. these winds are coming out of the south. look at our current temperatures. it is a mild 61 in san francisco right now. the same in hayward. fremont we have a few showers and it is 60 degrees. a mild 61 right now. satellite-radar will show our storm. you will see an area of low pressure pushing off to the north and east and it is still giving us shower activity. we will continue to do so. with the forecast in future mode monday morning at 6:00 as we head back to work and school yes, there will be pockets of downpours throughout the bay area. even the threat continues into monday afternoon. 1:00 we still have a chance of showers popping up. it is not until monday evening that this storm system pulls away and takes the rain with it and also the winds.

look at the current wind gusts. some 40 miles per hour. as the storm pulls away on monday morning notice how the winds relax and calm down to less than 20 miles an hour. still a wind advisory in effect. it has been extended through tomorrow morning at 4:00 in the morning for those gusty south winds. over 40 miles per hour and the potential is still there for downed trees and power lines. we are talking about snow in the sierra. winter weather advisory through tomorrow afternoon at tour:00. we are above 7 -- above 7000 feet they could see six inches. they could get a foot and a half of new snow powder there. the bay area overnight we will see the showers on and off. the temperatures are not falling from where we are. low to mid50s overnight. and then for your monday the showers will be with us and tapering by the afternoon. this is a wonderful day.

live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> good evening. in tonight's headlines, the person of interest in a case of a body found dismembered has died. mark andres is accused of putting a torso in a suitcase south of market neighborhood. on tuesday a judge released him from jail citing a lack of evidence and he died after checking into a hospital. strong winds sent construction materials from the roof of the hotel on market and mcallister in san francisco. one person went to the hospital. and name your city. you probably have trees down. the latest is in foster city twher a tree fell on to -- where a tree fell on to an apart meant building. the third floor is evacuated as a precaution. another storm is bearing

dead after a riot outside a soccer game in egypt. it began ahead of a match just east of cairo. witnesses say the violence erupted between fans and police after some fans tried to push into the stadium without tickets. alabama is the 37th state to legalize same-sex marriage. a judge that overturned the state's ban is to take effect tomorrow. the supreme court has not ruled on a state request to stay the decision. >> a teenager's post lead to his arrest in a shooting at a mall near pittsburgh. there was surveillance video at the mall. he posted the picture just four hours before saturday night's shooting. three people were shot and injured. thornhill is being charged as an adult. >> a shopper at the mall in fresno recorded a brawl on her cell phone. the shoppers ran to take cover as people picked up chairs and

threw them at each other. one man was knocked unconscious and he went to the hospital. the recent drop if gas prices has california lawmakers scrambling to find new ways to pay for crumbling roads, bridges and highways. the state's repair fund comes from gasoline taxes but it has dried up recently causing a $5.9 billion backlog in repairs. lawmakers have come up with several proposals to replace the money. they include a dollar a week fee on most drivers a temporary gas tax hike redirecting money being used to payoff debt and converting carpool lanes to paid toll -- tollways. now gas prices are on the up swing. the average price of a regular gallon of gas jumped 13 cents in the past two weeks. it is due to a rebound in the price of crude oil. san francisco has the highest gas prices in the continental u.s. at $2. frief 9 a -- $2.59 a gallon.

"boyhood" has been named best picture at the british academy awards. he was named best director and spent 12 years on the project. he won best actor for his performance in "the theory of everything" and julianne moore for portraying a woman with alzheimer's in" still alice." it is an indicator of possible success at the academy awards. and the oscars are two and a half weeks away. you can see them right here on abc7 on february 22nd. still to come, a bay area activist leads a campaign to save spanish gray hounds. they are also used for hunting rabbits. what happens after the hunting season is over is shocking. >> i am meteorologist drew touma. it is a wet and windy overnight period. in its wake we are tracking a big time warm up.

this is abc7 news. a northern california woman is fighting to stop the abuse of gray hounds in spain. the hunting season there just finished and some owners will abandon or even kill the dogs they don't want to feed. the i team's dan thois first investigated the american greyhound rice -- racing industry. a word of caution.

we are not showing you the worst of the abuse but some of the pictures are still disturbing. >> for nearly 30 years susan has rescued gray hounds from the american rise tracks. they are legal in seven states and most popular in florida. she keeps retired racers in her tracy home until she can adopt them out. >> they are quiet giants. they are 45 mile an hour couch potatoes. >> now she has turned her focus to spanish gray hounds. hunters in spains used the dog to chase rabbits. these competitions find out who has the best dog much like the greyhound i found in the bay area nine years ago. but there is one important difference. what happens to the spanish gray hounds after the season is done. >> i have seen some abhorant things, but nothing like this. >> he traveled to spain last year after a shelter invited her. and she provided these

pictures she and a colleague took. she can only compete at the -- they can only compete at the highest level for a few short years. when the season is over they often abandon dogs they don't think are worth feeding until the next season. wandering the countryside are a common sight and sometimes the hunters abuse the dogs tossing them down a well or worse. >> to actually hang a dog and torch the dog or put a dog in a dumpster with a bullet in his head while he is still alive, this is everyday occurrences, everyday occurrences. >> i have seen hundreds of pictures of hanging from tree. >> they hired a photographer to record my phone interview with an intelligence officer in the largest police force that investigates environmental crimes including abuse of the galgos. ortega says the number of dogs hung from trees has dropped

dramatically to a few in the past year and all forms of abuse have decreased because of awareness campaigns. >> it was a big problem in the past. we tried to mend it. we managed to mend it in most of the cases. i cannot say if it is completely in the past. >> officers across the country still make dozens of arrests but nongovernmental organizations estimate 60,000 are killed each year. >> this owner told a spanish documentary owner that he uses 60 per season and sends the seven worst racers to the local pound each year to be put down. another dog owner showed a common training technique pulling him behind a car for up to 15 miles in a day. >> while they are training them one can hurt themselves

the i team. dan noyes, abc7 news. >> turning our attention back to the weather now, it has been a blustery, to say the least out there. drew what is next? >> impressive wind gusts. some showers are work together north of santa rosa and a cluster of light showers moving through fremont and livermore. it is pushing off to the north and east. the intensity is softening to tapering with some light showers out there. the plains and lots of sunshine on the way. you notice snow once again moving into new england. snow totals as we go through the next three days or so are impressive around boston and areas to the north. anywhere from one to two feet of snow back into massachusetts. and even into hartford could see half a foot of snow once the system wraps up on wednesday. it is liquid precipitation. chico, tahoe we are seeing temperatures from 44 to 64

the a's held their fanfest. 15,000 fans showed up but we needed name tags for the roster that was dismantled. he was very active in the off season trade away so many favorites and well thoan players like josh donaldson. fanfest will be going from table to table and getting to know each other and making awkward small talk. he spoke to the fans and admitted there is a lot of change. but the goal remains the same trying to win a world series. >> it was actually the
