good monday morning to you all. thanks for being here. i'm t.j. homes. i'm sara haines. the work week is beginning with extreme weather, a second wave of heavy rain hitting from california to washington. flash flooding, mud slides and damaging winds possible. >> right now another big winter storm bearing down on the northeast. it's bringing once again ice and snow for a number of states. >> reporter: overnight a familiar scene, snow falling in boston and the schools are closed until wednesday as the city braces for up to two more feet. >> we have never seen this type of snow here in the city of boston in the history of our city. >> boston is at the breaking point. the city has spent $18 million to remove the snow busting the budget and the snow is so deep parking is banned on many streets. >> we're running out of space. we had to put all the snow in the city of boston. >> special machines to melt the snow being brought in. they can melt 350 tons of snow an hour. on the west coast, flooding

drenching drought stricken california andny nyevada and wind gusts up to 70 miles an hour in the forecast. storms are knocking down trees and power outages. the rain and snow made it difficult for rescue crews to locate hikers in trouble at nearly 9,000 feet. >> it was windy and visibility was very poor. >> fast-moving forest fires. gusty winds are shifting making it difficult for firefighters to control. >> the wind is at your face and difficult to stand. smoke is in your face. it hampers effort. >> at least 40 buildings have burned. and rain could be a big lp. and firefighters struggling in the rough terrain. these storms pummelling both coasts. we'll see what's in store for today. >> stephanie olmo has the monday outlook. good morning. stephanie. >> we are dealing with a major winter storm system right now

impacting the north east region and expanding south into the midatlantic area. steady snow across much of new new york state on this monday and the new england area. further south an icy mix, temperatures below freezing. we have the icy conditions continuing across new york city extending far west along i-80. allentown included in this. expect travel delays throughout monday. the snow is continuing to fall through the day on tuesday. 12 to 18 inches expected by the time it's all said and done in the boston area. off to the west we continue to deal with some wet weather. the greatest threat is in northern california. sara and t.j., back to you. >> thank you. the other major story is the growing military pressure on isis, the group suffering heavy losses in weekend air strikes. >> the parents of american hostage kayla mueller also hoping she's still alive and asking for people's prayers.

jordan launching more than 50 air strikes for the brutal burning of a jordanian pilot. the chief of jordan's air force claims isis is losing 20% of it's capabilities and more than 7,000 of their fighters. >> it's galvanized the coalition. unified the coalition. >> in an exclusive interview with abc's martha raddatz, john allen, the man in charge of the fight against isis said the response has been critical against the group he says is more formidable than al qaeda. >> do you believe isis poses a threat to the homeland. >> i think we should take it very seriously. >> isis has affected this section of the homeland. news came three days ago that kayla mueller, just 26 years old held hostage was allegedly killed in one of those jordanian attacks. her parents in seclusion clinging to hope their daughter is alive. >> the strain of not knowing where their daughter is at and

whether or not she's alive is something that is starting to wear on them. >> the u.s. claims there is no evidence yet of kayla's death. they're dismissing this as propaganda intended to drive a wedge between the two countries. kayla's parents are taking no chances. they're appealing directly to her captors saying her well-being is your responsibility. >> nbc's brian williams took himself off the air for several days. veterans called him out for false claims. that his helicopter was hit by a rocket during the iraq war 12 years ago. he is the anchor manager editor of nbc news and says it has become apparent to me that i am too much a part of the news due to my actions. nbc launching an internal investigation while lester holt fills in. >> the new hampshire primaries, one year from today and a

familiar name is out front. bush. yes, an early poll finds jeb bush slightly ahead of other presidential hopefuls picked by 60% with kentucky senator rand paul a few points behind. however, new hampshire voters expressed some doubt about his position on immigration and education. new jersey governor chris christie ran a close fourth in the new hampshire poll speaking in iowa today. the polls find him not even close to that. many voters there are beginning to know who he is. almost 1/4 don't like him. when they get to know him. going to des moines after a rough week about a bobbled answer on measles vaccinations. >> president obama meets with german chancellor angela merkel today at the white house talking about the growing crisis in ukraine. merkel along with the leaders of france russia and ukraine set to meet wednesday to discuss a peace plan. the conflict has left 5,300 people dead with more than 200 people killed in the last three weeks according to the u.n. the powerball jackpot is

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> good monday hope. hope you had a nice if not calm weekend. thanks for joining us. i am christian. >> i am eric thomas. with leyla gulen and meteorologist mike nicco. >> movie sales were up with the weekend weather. scattered shower, still are out there with the storm system with enough instability. but it is pulling away from us. the day planner today as we look at how fast the winds are gusting around emeryville be careful, breezy with scattered showers through noon and we will be partly sunny this afternoon from the mid-50's to the low 60. by the evening hours we are back in the mid-50's. >> thanks mike we will check with leyla gulen and the commute. >> you may have had to use the

headphones because the wind was knocking the weapons around. we have high it is breezy. use both hands on the wheel crossing into san francisco. the golden gate bridge shows traffic to be cleared but gusty conditions. be cautious. the storm coverage, the bay area is picking up the pieces after the massive weekend storms with downed trees causing power outages to property damage. amy hollyfield is in walnut creek at one of the affected locations. >> kristen here is a tree that came down. the mess is still here. the tree came down. look at the roots in tree to give you an idea of how large it was. they chopped it into pieces and they have not been able to move it all yet.

>> it took a couple of hours for them to get this chopped up and it is in walnut creek. to get it through the wood chipper, the winds knocked the trees over all over the bay area. we have video of a few of them. here are a couple that came down in oakland. one across skyline boulevard. a block away a tree fell that just missed a house. a lucky break there. in berkeley a tree caused some property damage. the limbs hit a car, a prius and the branches crushed the compact car causing a significant amount of damage. in walnut creek, we are still feeling a little bit of wind but not the gusts, the intense gusts that kept me up throughout most of the night here in the east bay, it was, really, howling and this is now a gentle breeze and hopefully the gusts are finished with no more trees. we will work the story through mornin
