that's all coming up but let's get to that powerful winter weather. hitting both coasts right now. snow, freezing rain, dangerous roads in the east and flooding rain and possible mudslides in the west. our extreme team is tracking it all. ginger starts us off. >> freezing rain. rain falling on the surfaces 32 degrees or below and sleet has been falling and we'll eventually getting snow here in new york city. wait until you see the maps. both coasts going with a storm right now and we're talking about the west in a bit. but let's focus in on the danger this morning in the northeast. from long island back through parts of pennsylvania, that's all ice. i-80, i-95. any of those elevated surfaces that get slippery fast you'll see a glaze, up to a quarter inch of ice adding up. look at the snow, that's to the north and already eight-plus inches of fresh snow in boston, a place that's saying mercy, help us so much. we have got our rob marciano

again in boston. rob. >> reporter: good morning, ginger. just another day in boston. forget about piling the snow up by the feet. they're piling it up by the story. three or four stories of it. and front-loaders, no longer that. you got to bring in the big john deere diggers to try to make room for even more snow coming today. overnight, another winter storm making its way through the northeast. in plymouth, massachusetts, snow and wind creating treacherous driving conditions. this car completely rolled over on the side of the road. police and fire departments on the scene, luckily no one was hurt. in albany, new york, heavy snow making roads dangerous there leaving this suv stranded on the side of the road. similar scenes sunday slippery roads causing multiple cars to fly off the road, including this school bus, thankfully no students inside. in boston still digging out from this season's record-breaking snowfall residents and

officials trying to clear the way for up to another two feet. the city is running out of places to put it all. >> we have never seen this type of snow here in the city of boston in the history of our city. >> reporter: there's so much snow here in boston. they have brought in giant melters. that can melt up to 350 tons of snow per hour. so far this winter, boston, the hardest hit big city of the east, with more than five feet of snowfall. miles plowed, more than 178,000 plowed. hours spent blowing, 176,000. and get this, the amount of salt used, 56,000 tons and counting. the snow removal budget has been completely blown. kids out of school today and tomorrow. at this rate to make up for the snow days they're going to go into vacation days including spring break, robin. if spring ever comes. >> well, it is february. thank you. the storm making a mess as you can imagine, the morning commute throughout the northeast. the wintry mix of snow and ice adding up to dangerous driving conditions, and abc's gio benitez is on the road in

westchester, new york, right now. in our new york station wabc's mobile unit. how is it going out there? >> robin, good morning to you. we have been driving all morning long. i got to tell you, the roads are slippery out there. it is so cold that the rain drops on the windshield are freezing up the moment they make contact. those wipers not doing a whole lot. and on the roads right now, the big danger is that black ice. that invisible black ice. and that is what makes these cars slip and slide. so, whatever you do, when you are on these roads in the northeast, make sure you take your time and just don't slam on those brakes, george. >> be careful. okay, gio, thanks. that's the story in the east. now to out west, flooding rain, powerful rain and mudslides right now. ginger tracking that. >> over the weekend we had a big-time wildfires come up.

the wind advisory, some of those gusts peaking 70, 80 miles per hour. we want to take you to san francisco. listen. trees falling. power lines down. this was a big issue. oregon had major flooding and berkeley, we have pictures that shows you exactly what was happening with the big trees coming down in people's yards, on to homes and cars. the wind is going to release itself a little bit today. it's going to kind of diminish. but this final storm really for far northern california, coastal oregon and washington state, still coming along with a lot of rain. we're talking two to three inches right here from portland to the south. crescent city will get the half inch to one inch. so, robin, west and east, plenty to talk about. >> thank you. moving on now to the war on isis. the u.s. and its allies turning up the heat on the brutal terror group and there is still no confirmation on the fate of that american aid worker being held hostage. abc's martha raddatz has the latest from amman, jordan. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. general john allen who is the president's special envoy to

counter isis is meeting with jordan's king this morning while an american family waits. the parents of missing american aid worker kayla mueller try to remain optimistic this morning that their daughter is still alive despite claims by isis that kayla was killed in a jordanian air strike. in a statement over the weekend, they made an emotional appeal to her captors saying, you told us that you treated kayla as your guest, as your guest, her safety and well-being remains your responsibility. meanwhile, jordanian air strikes have greatly increased in recent days, in response to isis's brutal murder of the pilot. in a matter of hours, 20 jordanian war planes dropping 70 munitions on targets in syria. what effect has this had? on the rest of the coalition. >> i think it's galvanized the coalition. >> reporter: case in point, the

united arab emirates is sending a squadron of fighters in a show of unity. up to now, the u.s. has conducted more than 80% of the air strikes against isis but now, with additional help from arab countries, the fight may be at a tipping point. do you believe the murder of lieutenant kasasbeh back-fired on isis? >> absolutely it did. >> reporter: but isis continues to hold large swaths of territory both in iraq and syria. >> isil is at an entirely different level than al qaeda was. >> reporter: as for that young american hostage, general allen could say very little, but it is an intense focus of u.s. efforts. george. >> okay martha, thanks. let's get more from jon karl at the white house. the president expected to come to congress this week to get a new authorization for using that force in the battle. >> reporter: george, this will be a fight in congress. although the president believes he already has the authority for the bombing that we have seen in iraq and syria for the past

several months. he wants to see a big bipartisan vote in congress to show unity in america for this fight. but, george, i have to tell you he's going to be up against democrats who are reluctant to authorize another open-ended venture in the middle east and the republicans saying he's not been aggressive enough. >> and also some news on that over the weekend. wide open race on the republican side. it shows kind of a mixed bag for jeb bush. >> this is in new hampshire. if you look at it, jeb bush is on top of this poll of new hampshire republican voters, but within the margin of error, basically tied with rand paul and scott walker. among all voters in new hampshire, take a look at this, jeb bush is viewed positively by only 35% of new hampshire voters. that is a poor comparison to hillary clinton viewed favorably by 54%.

as you know, it is still early. neither one of them has gotten around to officially saying they're actually running. >> that might take a bit. thanks. let's go to robin. >> okay, george. now to an alarming new report about our cars. it finds vehicles using wireless technology are vulnerable to hackers who could gain control of its electronics or steal personal information. automakers failed to protect drivers? abc's rebecca jarvis is here with much more. >> this is very concerning. they may not look it. but all the new cars on the road are becoming more and more like our smartphones connected to wireless technology that gives them lots of power and useful features but that technology, it can also make our cars more vulnerable to hack attacks. and this report finds serious gaps in the security. this morning, an alarming new report says millions of cars and trucks on the road are vulnerable to cyberattacks that threaten drivers' safety and privacy. >> there are inherent failures

and inherent security risks, if you will, that are available on all modern vehicles. >> reporter: the federal report found the majority of automakers' security measures are inconsistent in their ability to detect and prevent security breaches. cars that run on wireless technology could be hacked. letting someone take control of the car from anywhere in the world even with just a smartphone. wls demonstrated what happened when a technology expert took control of his vehicle. >> going 20 miles an hour. would it be possible to actually take over the car and steer somebody into an oncoming vehicle? >> there are cars with assists. as far as the system knows it's just trying to park the vehicle and it will turn the wheels for you. >> reporter: the report also shows that some automakers are sharing information with outside vendors. the vehicle history could be shared without the consumer even knowing it for marketing purposes. so what type of information can

they collect from your car? what you're driving, when and where are just a handful of examples. you also saw there,, they can even take over control of your car and, in the hands of a criminal, that is not the kind of information you want out there, robin. >> such an alarming report. all right, rebecca, thank you. we're going to get the other top stories of the day. good morning, amy. >> good morning to you. and we begin with the new battle erupting over same-sex marriage. this morning a federal judge's ruling allowing gay marriage in alabama takes effect. but, overnight, the state's chief justice ordered local judges to defy the ruling. the governor is expected to make his first comments on the dispute today. overseas, a massive explosion as tensions escalate in ukraine. a ball of fire climbing into the night sky after government forces bombed a chemical plant held by russia-backed rebels. today, president obama meets with german leader angela merkel trying to prevent them from

arming the ukrainian. nbc's brian williams has cancelled his appearance on "the david letterman show". today marks the first day he will not be anchoring his broadcast after taking himself off the air. this after veterans called him out for falsely claiming his helicopter came under fire during the iraq war. nbc is conducting an internal investigation. well, a dramatic high-speed chase in australia ended with a shootout on this highway caught on camera. look at that. the suspect's car stopped by road spikes, trying to hijack another car causing another crash. they were arrested a short time later. basketball fans across the country are mourning the loss of legendary unc coach dean smith. smith was long called the best teacher in basketball, winning two national titles with the tar heels and olympic gold medal. michael jordan has called him a second father. smith also fought for integration, recruiting black athletes in the south.

all right, matt, thank you. but we're going to begin this half-hour with that fatal car crash involving bruce jenner. his suv involved in a chain reaction collision leaving one driver dead. it's under police investigation and this morning jenner is speaking out. abc's linzie janis has the latest developments. good morning. >> good morning, robin. that crash happening on this narrow and winding stretch of pacific coast highway. the car in front of bruce jenner's suv ending up in oncoming traffic. the woman behind the wheel losing her life. >> bruce, are you okay? >> reporter: overnight bruce jenner speaking out about the deadly malibu pileup he was involved in over the weekend, telling abc news, my heartfelt and deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones and to all of those involved or injured in this terrible accident. i will continue to cooperate in every way possible. >> we now have seven patients including one doa.

>> reporter: paparazzi capturing images of the moment of impact saturday. authorities trying to determine if jenner was holding a cell phone in his hand at the time of the incident. investigators now deciding if they should pull the phone records of everyone in the accident. the evidence will show bruce was not texting at the time of the accident. they claim. jenner, a reality star and olympic gold medallist also telling police, paparazzi had nothing to do with the crash. the chain-reaction mangled mess involved four cars are on the pacific coast highway happening less than three miles from jenner's malibu home. authorities say for unknown reasons, a woman driving a dark blue toyota prius abruptly slowed down causing the lexus to crash into her. jenner driving a black cadillac escalade with an attached

trailer, then rear-ending that lexus, possibly propelling it into oncoming traffic. a hummer traveling in the southbound lane then striking the lexus head-on. >> it sounded horrific. the cars look demolished. >> reporter: a 69-year-old widow and resident of a gated community seen here on this webpage supporting a nonprofit group against animal research pronounced dead on the scene. two adults and three children inside that humvee briefly hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries. jenner walked away uninjured and he passed a field sobriety test and volunteered a blood sample. police tell us they'll be following up with him and others involved in that accident this week. george. >> linzie, thank you. we're going to turn now to the vanderbilt rape case. cory batey is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of raping a fellow student, and

he's speaking out for the first time to dr. phil and abc's ryan smith has the story. >> i was horrified. i didn't know what had happened to the young lady in the pictures, and i immediately deleted them. >> reporter: cory batey calling the 23-year-old the rape victim young lady when he testified. a far different description of how he described her after the assault. >> who did you make the statement they say i [ bleep ] someone? who did you make that statement to? >> i don't recall who that was. >> it's an interesting choice of words. some [ bleep ]. because you're saying that's not me. i watched myself on tape. that's not me. that's out of character. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: this, just one of the tough exchanges during the interview airing today on dr. phil. with the now-convicted vanderbilt football player. batey, brandon vandenberg and two other men carried the woman to a dorm room where she was assaulted.

back in the water. but this time he's given me a nifty tool to help extracting myself easier. >> these are called ice picks. most people who go snowmobiling or ice fishing have these around their neck and this will make it easier. >> reporter: easier indeed but same rules apply, kick and pull. all right. so, in addition to kick and pull, dr. popsicle says remember this, it will take you about a minute to get used to the cold water, just keep breathing. you have got 10 minutes before you won't be able to move your hands and feet and an hour or so before you lose consciousness. so. >> that's longer than i thought. >> yeah. don't go hypothermic that quickly. you can pretty much try to maneuver out. and if you're wondering what this fantastic accessory is, these are the picks that we used to pound the ice and pull yourself out of water. they didn't make a huge difference for me, but apparently, ice fishermen love them, because i wanted to get
