good morning, on this tuesday, i'm sara haines. >> and i'm kendis gibson. t.j. holmes and reena ninan both have the day off. started with the latest blast of snow pummeling new england for the third time in two weeks shattering records from massachusetts to maine. >> the storm is finally tapering off this morning but as it moves s out to sea another is on the way. more than six feet of snow already on the ground making this one of boston's snowiest winters ever. subways shut down and kids home from school and the latest from elizabeth hur. >> reporter: traffic troubles overnight. cars backed up for miles with a stretch of the new jersey turnpike shut down for hours. these images from drivers stuck in traffic. some wondering if a flash freeze was to blame. this morning, troopers are investigating so far confirming at least one person cast willed and more than 15 cars buses and

tractor trailers were involved. drivers throughout the area spent the day navigating roads and highways covered in snow sleet and ice. >> very very poor condition. >> we've seen a couple of accidents. >> reporter: in rockland massachusetts, a close call. the steady snowfall causing this to cave in. >> scary. slow motion watching it come down. >> reporter: while in boston snowblowers are struggling to stay ahead of mother nature. clearing nearly two feet of snow on monday 74 inches of snow so far this season. that's more than d.c. baltimore, philadelphia new york city combined. >> state plows had moved enough snow to fill gillette stadium 90 times. >> reporter: and at airports more headaches with 1.3 million passengers affected in the three storms slamming the northeast over two weeks grounding thousands of flights and costing the airlines $60 million and counting. elizabeth hur, abc news, new

frightening moments on board a couple of airliners starting in houston. >> us airways jet from philadelphia forced to make an emergency landing. take a look at this video. sparks flying as the front of the plane scraping the runway. the plane's front landing gear failing to deploy. it takes more than 20 seconds for the plane to finally come to a stop. emergency vehicles rushed to the scene. passengers getting off the plane snapping some incredible photos there of the jet's nose resting on the ground. one passenger suffered a nonserious injury. a team of federal investigators looking into what went wrong. in tulsa, an american airlines flight made an unscheduled landing after the pilot smelled some sort of fumes in the cockpit. the flight started in dallas and was supposed to end in cedar rapids, iowa. all of the 67 on board were okay. one of them indicating a fair amount of confusion as the situation unfolded. >> the flight attendants after we landed i don't know where we are but i think it's tulsa.

we don't know what's going on. it's fume it's this. is the plane going to blow up? you just don't know. >> no word on what caused the fumes in the cockpit. the plane was taken out of service and alternate plans made. breaking overnight from the middle east bashar al assad telling the bbc his country is getting information on the u.s.-led air campaign against isis inside syria from third parties including iraq. but assad says he would never join the campaign against isis because, quoting here we cannot be in an alliance with countries which support terrorism. the u.s. has repeatedly asked assad to step aside as the civil war in syria is now entering its fourth year. and president obama says the time has come for iran to make up its mind about a nuclear deal. mr. obama noted that six countries negotiating with iran including the u.s. have offered to allow tehran to use nuclear power but not nuclear weapons

and the president acknowledged a difference of opinion with israel about whether more sanctions should be placed on iran. in virginia a man already behind bars for assaulting a woman has been charged with murder in the death of hanna graham. she is the university of virginia student last seen on this videotape near a charlottesville bar. today authorities are expected to reveal more details about what led to the charge against jesse matthew jr. dna has linked him to the death of another college student. a jury has been selected in the so-called american sniper trial in texas. ten women and two men will decide the fate of routh routh. routh is expected to pursue an insanity defense. the trial gets under way as the movie starring bradley cooper is still in theaters. measles outbreak up to 121 cases across the country.

in year alone, nearly 20 of those confirmed last week alone including a baby in atlanta on saturday. the cdc says the virus has now spread to 17 states health officials believe the outbreak started with a group of un unvaccinated tourists at disneyland. same-sex marriage was set to become legal in alabama yesterday. but it didn't quite work out that way. weddings did take place in 12 counties but judges in at least 51 other counties refused to go along. a federal judge ruled the state's voter approved began on gay marriage as unconstitutional. alabama's chief justice ordered all court officials to uphold the ban and talked to abc's steve osunsami. >> do you worry that you will end up on the wrong side of history here? >> wrong side of history? absolutely not. did they stop with one man and one man or one woman and one woman or do they go to multiple marriages or go marriages between men and their daughters or women and their sons?

you are looking at at first casino implosion in las vegas in more than seven years. the clarion hotel near the convention center was brought down overnight as crowds watched from neighboring buildings and parking structures. it originally opened in 1970 and was known by a bunch of names. in the '90s the debbie reynolds hotel and home 20 her memorabilia collection it closed it september and this morning's implosion makes way for a whole new resort to appeal to conventiongoers. the clarion hotel in vegas, nothing but rubble this morning. caught on camera, a wild chase through the streets of los angeles. it's believed the suspect stole a car that you see him driving right there and then threw all caution to the wind. >> yeah, with police in pursuit his reckless driving led him to strike or be hit by at least four other vehicles before having to ditch the car.

then he forced a woman out of her car and continued fleeing. >> he just came up to me and pointed the gun at me and told me to get out of my car, and he just took off with it. >> eventually the suspect was stopped in traffic and was shot by police as he tried to run. he was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment. a woman known for boarding planes without a ticket has been arrested yet again, this time in florida. police say marilyn hartman was able to get on a plane in minnesota and fly to jacksonville, and this time she took it one step further checking into a resort under another woman's name, but she was quickly discovered after the real guest showed up. hartman was arrested several times last summer in california and arizona after sneaking onto flights there. the atlanta community joined with the family of bobbi kristina brown to pray for a miracle. hundreds of people gathered at a candlelight vigil to pray for her recovery.

her father singer bobby brown was there. bobbi kristina's grandmother, cissy houston, is among the family and friends keeping watch at her bedside. tomorrow is the three-year anniversary of her mother's death. well, researchers are fueling new debate over just how much fat we should allow in our diets. a new study in "open heart journal" argues that there was no evidence to support low-fat dietary guidelines in place since the '70s. researchers say recommendations to reduce overall fat consumption to 30% of total intake was based on flimsy evidence, but many experts are reluctant to dismiss the old guidelines. turning now to a violent confrontation caught on camera inside a houston walmart. you can see the shouting match turn into an all-out fistfight. oh, after a shopper head butts a worker at a jackson hewitt tax booth inside. the tax preparer then slams the shopper's head against the table. the shopper claims the worker was rude and in a bad mood. no charges have been filed.

>> okay, from walmart to target and a follow-up now to a heartwarming story immortalized in a photo that went viral. people across the country were touched by this tender moment. a target worker in north carolina helping a teenager that he just met with his necktie. that teen, yasir moore, was heading to his first job interview, and the workers also gave him career advice. he returned to target with his mom to thank them for their help. >> when he told me all his advice, i got my confidence back, so when i -- so, you know, so when i went there, i was calm, cool, collected. >> they could have just sold my son a tie, but they took the time, helped him tie the tie, talked to him and they treated my son with dignity and respect. >> yasir is still waiting to find out if he got the job. chick-fil-a says they should have an answer sometime this week. now some sports and some history being made in the nba last night. >> but first the latest show us how it's done. details from our guys at espn.
