live this is abc be 7 news. >> and good afternoon. i'm dan ashley. larry beil is on assignment. >> i'm aum pla dates. >> another summer-like day in february. taking a live look outside right now where we've set at least one heat record and tied another. >> in san francisco, the unseasonably high temperatures drew hundreds of people out to the embark dera on their lunch breaks. it's beautiful. spencer christian is here with a look at how hot it got today. >> there's a lot of sun to be soaked up today. let's take a look at some of today's highs including records. 77 at san jose, a new record for this date. 73 at moffett ties the record high for this date

numerous mid-70s around the bay area. 76 at oakland so far and fremont 74 in san francisco. 81 in santa cruz. live doppler 7 hd you can see hardly a cloud to be found. meanwhile, we still have the beach hazard alert in effect for rip currents, large breakers. looking out over san francisco on this sunny afternoon. mostly clear this evening and mild. cool inland in the early morning hours. warm again tomorrow afternoon with highs ranging from near 70 on the coast to near 80 in the warmest inland locations. quite a warm weekend. a look beyond the weekend weather in just a moment. dan? >> thank you so much. a lot of people went to the beach today to enjoy the warm weather, but as spencer mentioned, there is an alert about sneaker waves right now. >> here is a look at san francisco's ocean beach from our camera. that's where wayne freedman is live for us.

wayne? >> we learned a lot about sneaker waves and rip currents today. one can lead to the other. we learned if you get caught in a rip current don't try to fight it. let it take you out then swim sideways. there is a warning fort functionston has a warning, rodeo beach has a warning and a warning at ocean beach, as well. at ocean beach today it felt like indian summer in winter. all of these people like dots on the beach, little knowing these conditions are traditionally dangerous in winter possibly even life-threatening from sneaker waves. >> there's no mistakes in the ocean. >> with that one there -- was that one? >> tide's coming in. >> mark arnold and his daughter sierra would know surfers who caught our notice a few minutes earlier as we visited the calmest part of the beach. even this place mentioned in the

coastal hazard statement from the national park service. it's not as if most people go to the beach expecting to drown. that's part of the problem. not only waves but rip currents. >> so the water's going out in the deep areas. so like these two guys for instance, can easily walk into a deep area, be over their head and begin being swept out. >> when we caught up with conrad and toby a few minutes later, they told us all about it. >> we weren't even that far out. >> you weren't even up to your waist. >> not at all. >> and they were strong? >> yeah. >> how strong? >> about a 9. >> such a beautiful day on the edge of a continent. so seemingly benign or not. from ocean beach, wayne freedman, abc7 news. >> exasperated new englanders are preparing to get hammered by another powerful storm, the third this month. the national weather service issued a blizzard watch from cape cod to coastal maine.

we have detail of our two coasts. >> it was a fantastic friday across the bay area today. a look at at&t park. certainly feeling like baseball weather with temperatures well into the 60s and 70s. across the region, but quite a different story on the east coast. take a look at this. this is fenway park in boston where they have seen more snow in the first 13 days of february than they have seen before. 2015 has now set it the snowiest february on record. not such good news for new england. another storm is set to hit them over the weekend. blizzard warnings are already up along the coast right now, even winter storm warnings for inland portions of new england. and there's an area of low pressure that has its sights is the on many cities. take a look at the future cast over the next 24 to 48 hours. an area of low pressure deep bes and strengthens. boston, more than i afoot of snow is likely. even hartford, connecticut

>> well, he didn't come right out and say it that way but he left the impression because he was gushing about what a great school this is and how it shouldn't be just for the young. everybody who gathered for the cyberconference knew what his message was he was enlisting their help to try to fight the threats. >> the president used humor to win over the roomful of technology leaders before launching into a sales pitch. he poked fun at his own failing to use secure passwords. >> it's too easy for hackers to figure out user names and passwords like password. group of stanford students. president sat at the head of the table. the president told the media they needed a three-day weekend and they were told to leave the room. just minutes ago news reporter tiffany wilson tweeted this had video of the president's motorcade coming up russian hill. they'll have a live report at 5:00. >> in fresno an 8-year-old girl is recovering after her 10-year-old sister shot her in the stomach by accident. the girl's father is a madeira county sheriff's eslieutenant. he left a loaded handgun on the bed and the 10-year-old accidentally fired one shot while handling it. her sister is in stable condition and expected to be okay. the district attorney will decide if any charges will be filed. >> oakland police shot and wounded a man this morning who they say was confronting them with a knife. >> but the man's family questions whether the officers needed to use lethal force. >> news reporter laura anthony is live with new details on the

investigation. laura? >> well, police here have not actually offered us much new since this morning. they did confirm that one of the officers at the scene was an officer in training. in the meantime, the family of the man who was shot tells us he is in stable condition. >> they didn't have to shoot him. they could tased him and used other force. >> janea told us she doesn't think the police had to shoot her cousin. on an oakland street this morning. a man she identified as 28-year-old cory pollard. >> they seen my cousin with a knife in his hand he got into the an altercation and he guess he wouldn't put it down so they shot him three times. >> the officers were flagged down about a man armed with a knife acting erratically in the area. officers located that person and approached them. confrontation ensued and the one officer discharge the their firearm at the subject. >> the police said the two

officers were in one car one was a training officer the other a recruit. a recent graduate of the lis academy. investigators wouldn't say which officer fired. the veteran or the officer in field training. though she declined to speak with us, according to a witness, paula's mother begged the officers to tase her son, not shoot him. >> he's at home. so you know like he couldn't be too much in harm's way. >> both officers at the scene are on paid administrative leave. laura anthony, abc7 news. >> the d.a. said today the officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man last year in the city's bernal heights neighborhood will not be charged. the new report found alex nieto threatened multiple people before police arrived. he then pointed a taser at two officers in a way police say made it appear as if it was a handgun. officers fired 59 shots with at least ten of them hitting it nieto. we'll have reaction from his

afternoon. current temperature readings 17 in san francisco, 1? oakland, 75 san jose, half man bay broke the 0 degrees mark earlier today. blue skies over the bay. napa 0. 72 petaluma. livermore. one more live view from our exploratorium camera. these are our forecast features. warm weather through the holiday weekend. more record highs possible and gradual cooling late next week. a very familiar pattern. we've seen this for the last several days. this big strong ridge of high pressure brings us the very warm weekend coming our way. we still have storms out in the pacific. but they are far offshore. we'll have virtually nof effect on our weather. long range starting today friday the 13th. we animate the calendar. you can see as we look ten days ahead, still no sign of rain moving into the bay area.

>> jane king has today's report from new york. >> a plant-based diet may lower obese children's risk of heart disease. in four weeks obese children eating low fat plant-based vegan diet lowered their risk of heart disease more than those who ate a heart healthy dite. worm born in 1990 you're starting to look old that's the message from origins marketing its anti-aging skin care products to women in their 20s. they've created a special #called quarter life crisis to target the females. a new study is aimed at combating cluster headaches, headaches that cluster in a certain area of the head and happen a few times a day. the study involves a wand device sent a mild charge to the area. researchers say that we've learned so far has been promising. there's a shortage of organic milk in u.s. grocery stores as more americans buy it, demand is outpacing supply.

officers have been cleared of charges for the death of alejandro alex nieto. the d.a. fired 59 shots at him at vernal heights park in march of last year. news reporter vic lee is live in san francisco with newly revealed details of the investigation. vick? >> well, this is the d.a.'s letter with all of his findings to police chief greg sur. the district attorney also sent his full investigation to the u.s. attorney's office for its review, and that, of course, is to prove to the public that this report is fair and accurate. but there are those who do question its accuracy. >> alex nieto was shot and killed last march. officers were investigating 11 reports of a man acting strangely while holding a gun. four officers were involved in the shooting. nieto was holding a taser. but all of the officers said they thought it was a gun.

they said they fired in defense of their lives when nieto drew his weapon. >> use that is gun against him, shooting is likely to occur. it is lawful. it is clearly constitutional. >> findings from the d.a.'s investigation include the following. the officers were 25 to 30 yards away when they fired a total of 59 shots were fired by the four officers. nieto died from multiple wounds from as few as ten gunshots. the report also mentions one witness who is encountered nieto and says he recognized a weapon to be a taser. he called a number what he thought was to reach police. >> he did not try 911. he called 311 which is the nonemergency number. he couldn't get through. >> other witnesses did call 911 reporting that nieto had a real gun. but the family and friends say the d.a.'s report has inconsistencies. they say them have a key witness

who disputes the findings. >> they fail to interview the eyewitness that claims that alex nieto never held the taser in his hand, never made a move to raise his taser. >> the family has already filed a civil rights wrongful death lawsuit against the city. vic lee, abc7 news. >> search warrants show the suspect arrested for the murder of three young muslims in north carolina had an arsenal of weapons in his home. police say 46-year-old craig stephen hicks shot and killed a dental stud, his wife and her sister. chapel hill police think the crime may have stemmed from an ongoing parking dispute. the family believes it may be a hate crime prompting the fbi to launch an investigation. today police searched hicks0jia÷ home and found more than a dozen guns, several loaded magazines and large ammunition staff. >> sunday's cease fire in easternph yó kyyúypyyppyhpaykóéayyp 4 çyh@ypkóópkykóúyúyúyp 4 ó zh yçóaózçyp 4 ó çypyypp# ( aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa''& fire in the region.

russian separatists sheld a town 25 miles behind the frontline today killing at least one person. the attack happened as russian-backed separatists stuffed leaflets inside shells that will be dropped in the town, a strategic railway hub. they ask troops to surrender. cease fire is scheduled to take hold sunday morning. >> oregon's long time governor resigned today amidst a corruption investigation. john kitzhauber stepped down following allegations his fiancee used a relationship with him to benefit her consulting business. the couple is under investigation by the state's attorney general. he thanked those who supported him for the past three decades. the 67-year-old served two different stints as governor, the first from 1995 to 2003 and second beginning 2010. it will be effective next wednesday. >> oregon's nex governor will be kate brown, a democrat and

served as oregon secretary of state since 2008. she's next in line since oregon does not have a lieutenant governor position as edo in california. the 54-year-old lives in portland with her husband and openly bisexual and the first statewide office holder in the nation to come out with this identity. >> a frightening ride for 11 kids on a school bus in minnesota. you can see the bus swerving all over the road after the driver experienced some kind of medical emergency. a sheriff's deputy noticed the driver losing control at 35 maybe 40 miles an hour. a camera board his cruiser captured what happened. at one point, the bus stopped and the deputy approached it but the bus took off again and finally stopped later. the kids were fine scared, of course. so far no word on the driver's condition. >> the very first presidential bust made with a 3-d printer is on display in time for presidents' day. the smithsonian created the life sized replica of president obama using 3-d scanners. he only had to sit still for

about a second while 50 lead lights flashed and eight sports cameras and six wide angle cameras snapped pictures. they put all the data into a computer and used a 3-d printer to create the bust now on display an the national proper at this time gallery. >> a heartwarming story as a premature baby recovers. oliver crawford became the youngest infant to receive a heart transplant at a united states hospital at six days old and seven weeks freeh premature. it took place january 11th. he is now being treated at a hospital in phoenix. doctors told his parents initially he may not survive birth. >> we're going to be able to bring him home and do more than hold him. we're going to be able to spend the rest of his life with him. that is a huge change. >> doctors can't say when they'll release oliver from the hospital. his lungs are still week but he's doing amazingly well. the mother's original due date

noon tomorrow and continuing to 7:00 a.m. monday. another winter storm pounding the northeast. winter storm warning for the inland and interior sections of the northeast from 3:00 p.m. tomorrow to 11:00 a.m. sunday. another big storm headed that way. you can see on our national map tomorrow snow moving out of the great lakes into the northeastern corner of the nation. much of the remainder of the states will be under sunny skies and rather calm conditions. that includes the state of california which will be sunny and warm again tomorrow with highs of 74 at chick co 75 at fresno. 88 palm springs. 3 at los angeles. here in the bay area, we'll ceelo to mid seventies for most of the region and upper 70s in some spots. and the annual valentine's day pillow fight takes place tomorrow evening at justin herman plaza. skies will be clear. 6 degrees at the wave of the first feather and by 7:30 tomorrow evening temperatures still on the mild side around 63 degrees or so. happy valentine's day.
