might be tempting in the warm weather. abc7 news reporter wayne free man has a warning for us about sneaker waves. wayne? >> why is it when -- hello. why is it everybody talks about the beautiful day then they come to me and i have to warn you about the beautiful day. we're at ocean beach. it is beautiful. seemingly idyllic and perfect. then again, there's the question of what happens if you go into or near the water. >> be careful what you wish for when shooting a story about dangerous surf. also known as sneaker waves at ocean beach. >> there's no mistakes in the ocean. >> you know, you can drown. most people drown two inches from the top of the water. >> hold on. was that one there? >> we'd been talking to mark arnold, a surfer one of many people who took to or near the water on this beautiful winter day. the difference, mark snows about sneaker waves and rib currents. most others here do not. >> well, stupid is as stupid does.

>> that was conrad duncan after he and buddy toby moss felt a stronger rip current than they expected. >> we were not that far out and feeling them. >> barely up to your waist. >> yeah. >> and they were strong? >> yeah. >> how strong? >> about a nine. >> a warning from the national park service for the golden gate national recreation area especially at ocean beach and rodeo beach in marin county. at this time of year, sneaker waves and rip currents become a potentially lethal combination of high cro drolg, high waves might surprise you. more water than usual accumulates on shore to drag you out in a rip current. tom kendall studies ocean beach and says rip currents are often a product of one or more high waves. >> coming in, it's relatively uniform. you have the same wave along its crest length or whatever surging up the beach. and then as it starts to draw back these concentrating points occur and then you have the higher velocity. >> like a funnel or a hose. >> exactly.

>> when you can't see or expect till you find yourself inside and then it could be too late from ocean beach, wayne freedman, abc7 news. >> moving on a few new details tonight in the police shooting of a man in oakland this morning. they say he had a knife and would not put it down. one of those at the scene was a police recruit in field training. abc 67 news reporter laura anthony is live at oakland police headquarters with the latest on the story. laura? >> hi, dan. police have confirmed that one of the officers in the patrol car was in training but they would not say if he was the one who actually fired the weapon. at this man with a knife. at last word that man is in critical but stable condition. >> no matter what the situation was, they didn't have to shoot him. >> janae told us she doesn't think police had to shoot her cousin on an oakland street this morning. a man she identified at 28-year-old cory pollard. >> and they seen my cousin with

a knife. he had gotten into an altercation. i guess he wouldn't put the knife down. so they shot him three times. >> the officers were flagged down about a man armed with a knife acting erratically in the area. officers located that person and approached them. confrontation ensued and one officer discharged their firearm at the subject. >> police police said the two officers were in one car. one was a training officer the other a recruit. a recent graduate of the police academy. >> investigators wouldn't say which officer fired, the veteran or officer in field training. both officers were wearing body cameras but plus could not say if they were turned on at the time of the shooting >> it's a dynamic situation. if you have to jump out of your vehicle and you can turn that camera on then you canning >> though she declined to speak with us, according to a witness, the mother begged the officers to tase her son not shoot him. >> i don't see why they had to take it there. he couldn't be too much in

harp's way pooh both officers at the scene are on paid administrative leave. laura anthony abc7 news. >> san francisco's district attorney said the officers involved in a fatal shooting in the bernal heights neighborhood will not face charges. the new report on the incident found alex nieto threatened multiple people before police arrived. he pointed a taser in a way that made it appear as if he had a handgun. officers fired a total of 59 shots. at least ten of them hit nieto. the wrongful death lawsuit is still pending. >> the san jose police say the man who officers fatally shot wednesday wanted to be killed. investigators say officers shot at phillip watkins after the suicidal man charged at them with a knife. police said this morning watkins was the one who called police reporting the intruder. the incident remains under

investigation. >> a problem with the golden gate bridge's new barrier brought traffic to a stop this morning. cell phone video shows the presidio parkway at a near stand still on the south side of the bridge. the spokesperson says a 14-inch pin that connects each barrier unit worked its way loose. she says there was no danger. the barrier units did it not move noticeably and they were protected by that zipper truck. the crew spent 30 minutes replacing the pin. tonight they'll be back out for a previously planned series of tests to make sure the tension is right so the pins do not slip loose again. >> barrier truck goes back and forth over the barrier checking the tension all along the way making adjustments as needed. >> the company that made the barrier will come out to test it. >> jim harbaugh is parting with the 49ers apparently was not at all mutual. he told it the "san jose mercury news" he was told on the monday after a loss to the seahawks he wouldn't be coach anymore. he says he opted not to leave at that point.

this is abc7 news. >> 3-d printing is not just used for making car parts and smartphones. it's being used more and more in hospitals and medical schools. news reporter lisa shows us how stanford is using the machines to save lives. >> it's extraordinary. it is transformative in terms of what everyday medical practice can be like. >> it is a 3-d printer and it's changing lives at stanford. the machines aren't just made for tv envengs as seen on "grey's anatomy" where organs, prosthetics and tissues could be made in a few hours. at sanford's bioengineering lab, science and medicine intersect and create things like this. >> you can see all of the different tubes and veins that we have. >> it's a detailed life sized model of a heart. surgeons can practice technique, approach and options on this before operating on an actual patient. >> to get an engineer to make

one of those things could cost thousands of dollarses. whereas we could go to a 3-d printer we may get it overnight and may cost a few dollar zplooz that's right. creating this heart cost less than $100. but it's not just stranford's cardiology department printing plastic organs. the oology department is too. >> using 3-d printing you can make a perfect mold of that patient's prostate and put it in here and you can use it to section the prostate very accurately. >> it's a research project to help cure prostate cancer. while stanford is using the 3-d machine to create a model of live human tissue, many say having something tangible like this to work with takes things to a whole new level. >> what is it worth to be able to hold something the right size and shape in your hands. i think it's -- it's immeasurable. >> each printer costs roughly $10,000 to $30,000. lisa amin ga leashian abc7

news. >> a new policy at kaiser permanente led to a dramatic interest in the cost of hiv drugs. the medication is classified under the category of specialty drugs instead of a $35 to $50 copay, patients pay 20% of the cost of the drug which adds up to hundreds of dollars a month. several insurance providers are doing the same thing. the supervisor is calling for an oversight hearing to address the decision and what can be done about it. >> canadian scientists found a way to stop apples from durning brown. the fruit has been genetically modified turning off the gene that causes the browning. they call it arctic apple. the usda approved them for u.s. growers. they could be available sometime next year. >> police are calling this a terrible accident. a 10-year-old girl shot her -year-old sister in the stomach with her father's police gun in fresno. the girl's father is a county

sheriff's lieutenant. police say he left his loaded handgun on the bed. the 10-year-old picked it up and it accidentally went off. >> it was loaded. there was one in the chamber. i don't think there was a clip in the magazine. but he was close to the gun in the bathroom right off the bed getting ready for work. >> the -year-old is expected to make a full recovery. the fresno county district attorney will determine whether the father should be charged. >> i an small group of students at riordan high school is takened a protest today. the ash be bishop's proposal includes lebbing public and professional lives consistent with church teachings on same-sex marriage and birth control. >> students believe in acceptance. >> god gave us this free will to live how we want to and make our own decisions. the archbishop is not giving the teachers the ability to do that. >> i want teachers to be called teachers and not ministers.

san jose cam where they had a record-setting day today. a beautiful view there. warm valentine's day forecast. records are possible this weekend. and gradual cooling is expected. next week. here's the pacific satellite picture. it's this ridge of high pressure that is providing us with the warmth. it's going to hold on through the weekend. forms will remain far offshore. i know we need rain and snow. might as well as enjoy what we have. here's the forecast. it does not bring a single storm through the area over the next ten days. so outlook remains dry right on through monday february 23rd. when you take a look at the tahoe forecast today it was another record high temperature in tahoe. record warmth expected again tomorrow. the holiday forecast a little bit cooler. sunday and monday in the upper 50s. temperatures in the 30s in the morning. so we need the snow up there.
