soaring temperatures set a new record in the bay area drawing thousands of people outside to enjoy the summer-like weather this valentine's day. good evening everyone, i'm indicate katie marzullo. not only warm out but pretty clear. you can see all the way across the bay tonight. in san francisco's northeast neighborhood, an unusual sight for february. people walking around, shorts flip-flops, tank tops. drew tuma is here with more on today's record temperatures. >> katie, a winner of a forecast as we kick off the holiday weekend. temperatures well above normal 10 to 15 degrees above normal.

santa cruz set a new record at 82 degrees. 79 in oakland. 7 75 in concord. looking for tonight crystal clear calm night ahead. we are tracking a gradual cooling trend into next week. we'll detail that in the full accuweather forecast when i see you in a little bit. on this clear, sunny, what was a day and now night even a pair of gray whales decided to enjoy the bay. they were spotted this afternoon inside the golden gate. more on the warm weather and those whale sightings. >> reporter: well, for the last couple of hours we've been watching people stroll by here on the embarcadero, wearing short-sleeved, some of them in summer dresses a few others in shorts. the only thing that got people riled up on this otherwise

perfect valentine's day was the sighting of those two gray whales. hours past sunset and the weather was still balmy enough for a frozen drink on the embark embarcadero embarcadero. >> extra cream. >> it's cold. >> yeah, it is. i'm enjoying it. everything is warmer with your partner. >> reporter: on this valentine's day, judy did have a red sweater to match her grandson. >> i brought red. about you it had sleeves. i stepped outside and i said, no, i -- it's too nice. >> reporter: across the city dinner was best served alfresco. this afternoon, anywhere near the water was the place to be as boaters flocked to the bay and set sail in the sun. a call went out from the coast guard. two gray whales were in the bay. >> right after our boat got in at 2:00, we heard it over the radio that there were two that were between alcatraz and the golden gate bridge. >> reporter: she was aboard the

kitty cat. they did not see the pair of whales in the bay. these pictures are gray whales from a prior expedition, but she said if the pair of whales are still in the bay, boaters need to be aware. >> we like to say, be whale-wise rules. stay 100 yards away. if you're in a motorized boat, within 100 yards, go out of gear. stop moving, let the whales move around you. >> reporter: the last sighting was reported by boaters near the golden gate bridge just before snesmt sunset. they're transitioning up and down the coast all the way down to mexico. locals and tourists alike are loving the warm weather. earlier today in san francisco's mission district, it wasn't chocolates they were after but valentine's day pink strawberry ice cream at mitchell's. for people who just flew in from chilly chicago, the break from winter couldn't have come at a

while he was rushed to the hospital, cleanup crews arrived. they got here about an hour and a half ago to deal with the pillow fight aftermath. it will take some time to clean up this mess. justin her man plaza is covered in white because of pillow fight 2015. hundreds packed the plaza with pillows in hand for a good old-fashioned pillow fight. but not all the hits were light as a feather. some came out swinging. this man was hit in the back of the head and lost his balance and slipped on all the feathers and was knocked unconscious. >> up in the middle over there, that's where people are crazy. >> too many aggressive people. >> reporter: but most were here just to have fun. parents even let their kids pick up a pillow and fight. >> a way to work out their energy. they're having fun.

it's on a fun-loving day. >> reporter: those who enjoyed the fight most came with a plan. all of it was done with a smile. >> i did get whacked in the nose a couple times. afterwards, you give each other a hug and it's all good. >> if somebody's beating you with a pillow, grab another pillow. keep fighting. >> reporter: not everyone was willing to fight. instead they stood back and watched. >> just something that's really i think, wonderful to get a group of people and have fun. >> reporter: the fun does come with a price. it will cost the city about $5,000 to clean up. in san francisco, abc 7 news. >> oh boy. new at 11:00 two men were hurt after crashing an suv during a police chase on highway 580 in richmond. it happened around 1:30 this afternoon. officers were responding to a stolen license plate when the victim spotted it on this white

ford ranger. the two men inside drove away from police and hit a car while getting onto 580. the chase continued east on 580 until the driver lost control. he had a firearm and narcotics on him. new details on a five-alarm fire that destroyed two businesses in san jose. firefighters will spend all night watching over any areas that are still smoldering. the fire burned through two custom car shops around 7:00 this morning, creating smoke. you could see it for miles. luckily no one was hurt. although ten classic cars are destroyed. the owner estimates it's a $1 million loss. several neighbors left their homes because the smell of burning car upholstery was so strong. >> scary just watching it to tell you the truth. it was just so thick like a big old cloud storming through. >> investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire. but they do not believe it's suspicious. you're looking at what's

left of a portable toilet on california street in san francisco, completely destroyed by fire. it happened in the lake street district near 10th avenue around 3:00 this afternoon. police are investigating the fire. they are calling it suspicious. the fire also damaged two parked cars. new details on a story we first told you about on tuesday. palo alto police released a sketch of a man wanting to take pictures of a woman in a public restroom. this man is suspected of following a woman into a bathroom and taking pictures inside a stall. this actually happened twice. the latest incident this past monday. another woman reported the same crime in another bathroom at the center back in july. palo alto police are asking for your help identifying a man they say groped another man in a department store restroom. this is a sketch of the man officers say entered the macy's store men's restroom at stanford shopping center wednesday around noon and groped a man. surveillance cameras caught this

new at 11:00, golden state warriors steph curry honored one of his biggest fans. he wrote on his shoes, #curry for dia and rest in peace. the north carolina college student was killed in a triple homicide this week. his death sparked national outrage over the belief he was targeted because he was muslim. curry has north carolina roots, and has been following the story. bearcat was well known for his love of basketball and for curry. >> he had a couple of things where he did his wedding photo very similar to a magazine cover that i did, and he had worn number 30 in all his intramural leagues. i even had family members who met him playing pickup basketball and they spoke highly of him. >> curry writes on his shoes before every game.

it's usually the bible verse, i can do all things. abc 7 news sports director larry biel was in new york where curry won tonight's three-point contest. we'll hear more from larry and steph curry coming up in sports. president obama is spending valentine's day in palm springs. he boarded air force one and took off from sfo just after 10:00 this morning. the purpose for the president's three-day visit to the bay area was to raise money for the democratic party and speak at a cybersecurity conference at stanford. >> just really happy to see him here. >> i think it was really fun actually. it's exciting. the president of the united states. it was well worth it. >> it's great to have him in town. although the traffic's a little bit tough. it's great to have him. >> the president also pulled a surprise visit last night to presidio heights where he had dinner. that stop was not on his official schedule. love was in the air this valentine's day, and for many

break through the barrier. so the storm track, once again well up to our north away from the bay area. that's how it's going to stay at least for the next seven days. future temperatures as we head into your sunday, by noon take a look at this. areas either at the 70-degree mark or better than that. going to be another warm day across the bay area for our sunday. take a look at the week ahead. downtown san francisco you should typically be at 61 degrees in the afternoon. tomorrow, much higher than that. 72 for your high, even on the holiday for monday. well above normal. temperatures cool off relatively speaking as we head back to work and school on tuesday. but still, mid-60s is above normal. similar story in san jose average high 64 degrees, well above that, the next seven days, not dropping into the 60s for our afternoon highs, even midweek this week. you want the cold you want the winter precipitation, you've got to go to the northeast. that's where the snow is right now. we have a blizzard in the making where snow currently falling in new york city. this is all going to push out to

the north. boston once again getting hit with at least 6 to 12 inches of snow. back here in the bay area, it is calm quiet, clear skies overnight tonight. 52 the overnight low in san francisco. 41 for napa. 41 in san rafael. 47 in oakland. 46 in san jose. monday, you love today you're going to love tomorrow. basically a carbon copy. sunshine, 70s on the board. 73 in richmond. 74 in oakland. up to 72 in downtown san francisco. 77 san jose. we'll duplicate that number in santa rosa at 72. tomorrow we're sun soaked on the sunday. similar temperatures like we had today in the mid-70s. monday, though what's going to happen, we're going to see an onshore wind. it will bring clouds along the coast. the bay and inland still rather mild. tuesday, similar pattern as we head back to work and school. well above normal.

people who live in san francisco are more stressed out about their lifestyle than people who live in oakland. compared to the rest of the country, both cities are pretty chill. new rankings from cnn money show four california cities rank in the top five for least stressed in the country for those seeking an active lifestyle. san francisco comes in fifth.

good evening. i'm katie har zul lo. in tonight's headlines a frozen drink at night. it's february in san francisco. across the bay area, a lot of people are enjoying the warmer than usual weather tonight and it is expected to continue tomorrow. paramedics took a man to the hospital after an incident at the annual valentine's day pillow fight in san francisco. he slipped on feathers and fell to the ground and knocked unconscious. the crews are cleaning up the mess and that will cost $5,000. firefighters will take turns watching over a smoldering fire in san jose overnight. two custom car shops nearly burned to the ground this morning. no one was hurt.

but ten classic cars were destroyed. breaking right now in san jose. a deadly shooting just within the last hour and a half on north capital avenue near mckey road. this is a live look at the scene right now. it happened in front of a liquor store across from the capital square mall. police say a man was shot and killed around 9:45. officers have the area blocked off right now while they continue to investigate. they do not have any suspects. follow us on twitter at abc news bay area and tune in starting at 5:00 tomorrow morning for the latest on this story. developing tonight, police in copenhagen, denmark shot and killed a man believed to be the gunman who triggered a manhunt this morning. two people are dead and five police officers hurt. as abc news reporter chuck seifertson reports, they're calling it an act of terrorism. >> reporter: the streets of copenhagen in turmoil overnight as more shootings rock the

danish capital. the site this time was near a jewish synagogue. the victims including two police officers. on the hunt for this man the suspect in a fatal shooting earlier in the day. the windows of this cafe scarred from the bursts of an automatic weapon. >> i would say 20 30 shots. people panicked, of course. ran for the doors. other people were hiding behind tables they had turned over. >> reporter: one man was killed and three police officers wounded. what was supposed to be a symposium on free speech became a brush with death for this man who believes he was the gunman's target. 68-year-old swedish artist has drawn death threats for satirizing the prophet muhammad. >> we feel certain now it is politically motivated attacks and therefore it is a terrorist attack. >> reporter: the shooter escaped, described as a young arab looking man, his face concealed by a scarf. it draws comparison with the

massacres in paris last month by islamic extremists. parts of copenhagen were shut down in a massive dragnet as terror once again stalked the streets of a western european capital. abc news, new york. it is a prut alli cold night for more than 100 million americans. another arctic blast is wreaking havoc from north dakota to florida. it's now headed for coastal new england bringing with it 60-mile-an-hour winds and below-zero chill factors. michigan and minnesota have reported windchills as cold as 43 degrees below zero. bitter cold in new jersey, making it very difficult for anyone who has to be outside. >> it is super cold out here. it is so, so cold. >> hand warmers toe warmers. fortunately it's not boston. i would rather the cold than the

snow. >> silver lining. boston is bracing for another foot of snow. and it's still trying to dig itself out of the six feet that fell in the last few weeks. whiteout conditions are triggering accidents and forcing airlines to cancel hundreds of flights. back here in the bay area the american red cross bay area chapter canvassed san francisco's mission district as part of the home fire preparedness campaigns. they're going door to door to talk about fire safety. make sure homes have properly installed and working fire alarms and a plan if a fire breaks out. >> one of the key things we have found through studies is that people really only have two minutes to get out of their home when a fire strikes. most people don't realize that. so by having a plan made in advance, it allows you to be more likely to get out as quickly as you need to. >> today in response to the deadly four-alarm fire last month that displaced at least 40 people.

babies and sugar daddies. now to a story of true love. this valentine's day it's extra special for a world war ii veteran who received a long-lost love letter. bill moore of aurora colorado, wrote the letter when he was a 20-year-old soldier to a woman he met on furlough. he would eventually marry bernadine and celebrate 63 years of marriage. she died five years ago. the couple's love lives on. >> when you're apart for that reason not knowing if and when you will ever see that person again, every chance you got to communicate was wonderful. i loved her. she loved me. that's all i can tell you is that it's a heart ache not being with her all the time. >> the letter surfaced 71 years after it was written. found tucked inside a record in a thrift store.

first it was the rich tech workers who sent home prices skyrocketing. now it's the chinese who want a piece of the american pie. they pay ka cash for homes. some buy them sight unseen. realtors are pulling out all the stops to encourage the overseas buyers. abc 7 news reporter vic lee has the story. >> reporter: it's one of the most lucrative mass-making events on the planet, realtors from 26 countries, meeting some of the wealthiest people in china. this one was held last december in shanghai. an invitation only real estate trade show highlighting elite properties from around the world. >> we're ready to come over here from shanghai and compete for any projects. >> reporter: american realtors have the upper hand. overseas chinese spent $22 billion buying homes in the u.s. from march 2013 to the same
