live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> a suspicious fire breaks out at an middle school while kids are out of school for the president's day holiday and the school is dividing -- deciding whether to cancel classes tomorrow. >> it caused considerable damage in one key area in oakland. amy hollyfield joins us with the latest. we just got an update that makes this mystery even stranger. now it appears that someone tried to use a fire extinguisher on the fire indicating that maybe the fire was an accident

but the person sure wasn't supposed to be there because it was the middle of the night at a middle school. >> the fire got a big head start on firefighters. it was called in before 2:00 a.m. by then though, fully engulfing the cafeteria and moving into the attic. ait went to two alarms. it was tough work to get the fire out. >> when the fire was out a store caught their attention -- a door caught their attention. it was opened were it looked to be forced open. >> someone did not have a key and helped themselves in by another means. >> it looks suspicious? >> it is unusual, and under investigation. >> if it was arson, that is unfair to the students. >> school board member was distraught to hear they were looking into the possible that someone broke into the school. she fayed damage and said the fire destroyed the school's cafeteria and kitchen.

>> we have a lot of kids would come here to this school and rely on the school to ploy them with food. many have breakfast and lunch here. that is unfair to them. >> custody a school holiday so no one reported to campus today among the mess. the school district needs to decide what to do about tomorrow. >> i don't want to alarm people or have them jump to the conclusion we will not have school because the fire was primarily located in the kitchen and cafeteria area. there are other ways we would be able to provide lunch and the rest of the school day could continue close to normal. >> they could make brown bag lunches at the central kitchen which would be a short term solution. long term they couldable kitsch anyone a partible and put it on campus. they are working on the solutions with pg&e checking to see if the building is safe and kids can return tomorrow. they hope to have an announcement this afternoon.

>> we know the name of a san jose security guard killed over $20 box of cigars having been shot on saturday night. we on add picture of the guard posing in his nobody. he was a security guard at the bboss nightclub. two men tried to steal a box of swisher sweet cigars and dropped them. he went to help not knowing they were thieves and he was shot. >> police looking at surveillance video to identity the suspects but so far, there have been no arrests made. >> a building in san francisco's mission district went up in flames last month had a history of safety violations. the building at 22nd and mission was cited for missing fire extinguishers, blocked firefighter escapes blocked exits and smoke alarms that did not work. it passed fire inspection in august. that is because the sloppy documentation by the fire

no three day weekend because of a new district calendar that combines lunar measure year and president's holiday giving kids two consecutive days off thursday and friday dead. the school district decided to keep kids if class dead and give two days off in a row because it would reduced disruption of learning. however, some parents are not happy. >> it was a bummer to me. >> a mother hoped to spend quality time with her 8th grade daughter. >> i don't get a last difficulties off and using my work is asigned with catholic holidays and today is the one holiday i thought my daughter would have off and it would be a three day weekend for both of us. it was a let down for us. >> other working parents are not sure who will lock after the kids. >> friday i work but they are at home and there is in child care nor me is it is a hassle. >> the district sent a call to

santa clara 200 workers are inside building everything they need for the saturday game. >> ice and the record breaking temperatures we have seen do not mix. in santa clara the national hockey league is finding a way to make it work at levi stadium. an outdoor hockey rink is in place for this saturday stadium's game between the sharks and the kings. it goes from the 20-yesterday game to the 20-yard line 3000 gallons of coolant is piped under the ice and plan -- blankets keep the ice from meting. >> 1 or 2 inches down we will put ice markings in tomorrow to keep it cold. >> staging is put up for the entertainers who will perform during the first and second intermissions on saturday night. surrounding the ripping, -- rink and decorations. >> it is a celebration of hockey. if people like hockey inside they will like it more outside.

could do it this weekend. so here we were this morning you could see the clouds coming up and taking over and that is why we are in the 60s at the coast and 70s elsewhere. in fact we are around 72 in milpitas and 77 in gilroy and only 68 in santa cruz where the clouds are coming in the next hour. half moon bay is 62 and pacifica is 66 with the clouds come in, and low-to-mid 70s on the planes with the 73 at mountain view tying a record at south san francisco and sausalito and low 60s along bodega bay and low-to-mid 70s in the north bay valley. 74 is close to a record in oakland and everyone else is in the low-to-mid 70s and also, as we head into our inland valleys. here is how the clouds come in tonight, overspreading our neighborhoods and because of that, it will be mild when we wage up tomorrow morning, and mid-to-upper 40's inland through palo alto and fremont and san jose and around 50 to 52 richmond is san francisco and to our south san francisco and over
