officer who escaped a deadly shooting at a san jose shopping center is being called a hero. he was killed over a $20 box of cigars. he worked as a security guard at a nightclub. two men were trying to steal a box of cigars from a nearby store, and they dropped them. he went to help the thieves, not knowing they were thrivesieves, and he was shot. >> in my eyes, he will always be a hero. manny jumped in the line of fire for my son. and i will be forever grateful for him. >> a memorial is growing at the site where manny was shot. a memorial service will be held for him tonight at 8:00. at this point, police have no suspects.

labor secretary tom perez will be here tomorrow to try to hope settle the port standoff. there is no activity here or at any of the other 28 west coast ports on this fourth day of the shutdown. and that's turning coastal waters into parking lots. some plants are stopping production amid shortages of critical parts from asia. plus there is devastating news from portland, the largest shipping company at that port is pulling out citing constant disputes. they have been asked not to talk about negotiations publicly. it seems few people can resist free admission to a popular park on this holiday. but are the crowds just too much? we have more on the impact wayne? >> reporter: good evening. we've gone around and around on this issue.

plans for winter sports. it's so warm and dry a decision was made to cancel the world cup ski and snowboard competition. it was set to take place in early march in squaw valley. the mountain's base is 42 inches, which is well below average. three olympic medalists were going to attend this competition, too. and another sign of our unseasonably hot weather, take a look at this small tree and brush fire in san jose this afternoon. one of our view ir, ricardo, september sent me two pictures of it. it was on weimann road. vegetation fires in february are fairly unusual. classes at claire mont elementary will resume tomorrow.

a fire was reported around 2:00 this morning. investigators are looking into whether somebody broke into the school. the fire destroyed the cafeteria and kitchen. >> we have a lot of kids at this school who come here and they rely on the school to provide them with food. i think most of them have breakfast and lunch here and that is unfair to them. >> the fire caused an estimated $1 million damage. nobody was injured and again, nobody on campus because of the president's day holiday. but parents and kids need to know the school will reopen tomorrow. call it a case of calendar confusion. students were in school this president's day in san francisco, unlike most kids. the situation is drawing mixed reactions, too. >> reporter: it's a sunny president's day holiday, but thousands of san francisco school kids are spending the day inside the classroom. no three-day weekend because of a new district calendar.

sky 7 hd captured this video of a big plume of black smoke rising near the oakland coliseum today. turns out it was a car on fire off of san leandro street. the flames were doused in just a couple minutes. there were no injuries. meantime investigators still aren't sure what caused a massive fire over the weekend that destroyed two san jose businesses. the flames destroyed six classic cars that were at the shop. the flames did force several neighbors from their homes. but we are glad to tell you no one was hurt. 64 of the world's best golfers will be in san francisco in april for a pga tour. the venue is not a private club but the city's muni course.

ignition switches has climbed to 56. the new total which is four more from last week is from a list being prepared from compensation experts. each el jiblg death claim is worth at least $1 million. it's established by gm and nearly 500 claims have been filed. experts are going through them one by one. there's been a huge recall of fire extinguishers. kidda is recalling some of their extinguishers. a faulty valve is to blame. recalled models were sold at hardware stores and big box retailers like home depot from august 2013 through last november, 2014. now we have more information from, if you want more information from kidda, you

of it in the fog. and this is what we typically see in the summertime, 55 degrees in san francisco right now. yeah getting chilly. san jose 68. half moon bay is dropping to the mid-50s. beautiful view from the san jose cam. temperatures in the 60s for santa rosa. 71 in concord. and livermore's in the upper 60s. are you going to run into some areas of thick fog, like you're looking at from our golden gate bridge camphor the morning commute. so watch out. we've already seen temperatures drop today. and it is going to be mild again for the rest of the week. here's the setup. we saw that fog and it's filling in across the coast this afternoon. that is definitely going to be the case in the overnight. tomorrow morning's commute will be on the gray side.
