live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this this abc7 news. good afternoon. >> we begin with new details in the search and rescue after a canoe went down in the bay. >> it was the fishing trip that turned into disaster. one person was rescued, but two others died when their canoe tipped over in san francisco bay off coyote point in san mateo county. vick? >> reporter: we're here at the embarcadero because this is where one of those who died worked. the waterfront restaurant. gilllermo and his son were all on that canoe enjoying the warm afternoon yesterday fishing when it capsized.

louise carlos had just bought the canoe a couple of weeks ago. he took his fiance and his brother fishing late yesterday afternoon at coyote point. his uncle told him the 12-foot canoe seemed dangerous. >> i said i don't think it's a good idea to go fishing, it's awful small. the boat tipped over carlos jumped over and flipped it back and it flipped again. >> reporter: the three were kept afloat only by life jackets. >> at some point the young male decided to swim to shore to get help. >> reporter: hours later, a report from their family that they were missing. the coast guard in south san francisco launched a searle and rescue operation. in the early morning they heard her cries in the dark for help. they rescued her. but half hour later, they found

the body of luis. then his father. both died apparently of hypothermia. workers at the restaurant were shaken by the news. the owner says he was a great employee. >> he was the type of guy that i would show up here early in the morning and he would be waiting to get in. >> reporter: luis had just joined a security company that assigned him to seton medical center. >> he immediately had a wonderful impact on us here in the office but also at the location where he was assigned. >> reporter: larisa is being treated for hypothermia. vic lee, abc7 news. deputies are trying to figure out whether a man who killed himself today by driving his car into the water was also trying to kill his girlfriend this afternoon just outside

livermore, authorities confirmed the girlfriend was able to jump out at some point before it went into the water. officials don't believe the northern california couple has any connection to the company that uses the pond. police hope surveillance video can help track down robbers who shot a pizza store cashier. >> two masked men rushed the counter last night, one armed with a silver gun and demanded money. you can see two customers in the back react to the shooting and hug each other. the employee was hit in the arm and should recover. >> certainly brazen. the video speaks for itself on many levels. what motivates them is not known to us. but it was certainly a violent crime and scared everyone involved. >> the robbers got away with some cash. laura anthony has been looking into this story all day and will join us live at 5:00 with information about unusual features of that silver gun that

could lead police to the robbers. another jewelry store robbery in san francisco, this time at pier 39. it happened last night just as the shop was getting ready to close. two robbers went in one pointed a gun at the employee and forced him to the ground. the other smashed the display cases and grabbed merchandise. police are not revealing how much was taken. the tiny community of kensington is without a police chief. >> he's been fired involving a sergeant, a prostitute stolen gun and badge. >> amy hollyfield has the story. >> reporter: there are some happy people in this town of kensington, now that the police chief has been fired after a scandal involving an officer and prostitute in reno. >> i sat on this board for four years.

it's terrible what has happened to this town and i think the healing began last night. >> reporter: last kay, sergeant keith barrow had his gun badge handcuffs and ammunition stolen by a prostitute in reno while he left. he said christina taylor drugged him. >> the thing that bothers me most is leaving your gun around. you know, this sex thing is a questionable thing, but the -- leaving your gun around or carrying it around in those situations, not good. >> reporter: others criticized how the chief handled the case. he let the sergeant stay on active duty while the case was investigated for eight months. some think he should have been placed on paid leave and then fired. >> it sounds like it's the only thing that needs to be done. he needs to go if he's going co-

cover things up. >> we need good public safety and an honest top cop. >> reporter: no comment coming out of the police department. the sergeant is still employed by the police department, but residents hope he is next to go. markets going on ground breaking technology. the federal transit administration awarded b.a.r.t. a $5 million grant to develop a device to stop an approaching train if workers are on the tracks. the project is expected to take two years. this grant comes a year and a half after two workers were killed by a train that was on a maintenance run. b.a.r.t. police are investigating a spike in stolen license plates. officials report 21 thefts since november. b.a.r.t. police are working to

catch whoever is responsible. work has resumed at the port of oakland after a four-day work stoppage in a labor dispute that's dragged on for months. the port of oakland says it's bad. imports in oakland were down 39% last month. exports down 26%. today, the obama administration is getting involved in this situation. wayne freedman with the story. wayne? >> reporter: getting involved, the secretary of transportation is in the part of the negotiations today, but no word coming out how the negotiations are going. the numbers are interesting and there's more to the numbers. consider the 19 ships waiting in the bay. and as far away as monterey to unload. if you look at those percentages, consider this. before this slowdown in oakland they were unloading roughly 35 containers per hour. afterwards, it's roughly 20 containers per hour. and then there are the people who are stuck in between. in and around the port of

days after residents were concerned about crime and drugs. the park is undergoing a renovation, including tearing down restrooms that were set on fire. tonight's meet willing start at 7:00. a state senator is taking action to reign in troublemakers who hang out on stairs drinking and littering. democrat jim bell is introducing legislation to give cities the authority to regulate pedestrian right of ways. the move would enable cities to place curfews on these locations. president obama's executive order on immigration has taken a texas-sized hit. a roadblock hours before a key part of that program was about to take effect. >> last night, a district judge in texas blocked a program authorized by the president that intends to protect millions of immigrants from deportation. the program was set to start accepting applications for tomorrow's deferred deportation.

karen traverse abc news, washington. this is how conditions looked along the embarcadero in san francisco this morning. king 250idtides happen when the sun, moon, and earth line up creating a maximum tug, causing local waters to rise. authorities say areas to avoid during these high tides include the coastline, low lying roadways, parking lots, coastal trails or coves. a kayak trip became a wild adventure for a family in orange county. they say they'll never forget valentine's day after spending an hour with a sea lion pup. the little guy jumped aboard their kayak in santa barbara. >> i could feel something on the kayak and i looked back there and there was a little sea lion. >> he was putting his head up

tonight. sun shine returns tomorrow afternoon. satellite image shows that big ridge of high pressure which is controlling our weather for the next several days. despite the control of that high pressure system, we had low clouds today. from 7:00 p.m. low clouds widespread overnight. maybe a couple of areas of drizzly drops. perhaps patchy fog over near the delta. and then tomorrow as we continue the animation 5:00 tomorrow morning, cloudy skies in most areas, but the clouds will burn away by midday, giving way to sunny skies in the afternoon and warmer tomorrow with highs ranging from the upper 50s to the coast to 60 inland. tomorrow, look for upper 50s to about 60 on the coast. mid 60s around the bay. upper 60s in the mildest inland locations. up to about 70 at cloverdale. here's the seven-day forecast.

aids within three years has shown up in cuba. researchers are seeing the strain in individuals who have had unprotected sex. the world health organization shows there are 35 million people worldwide living with hiv-aids. more than 30 different strains of the virus have been identified. the number of confirmed measles cases in california is expected to rise when the state health department updates its stats. the latest number is 113 cases right now. almost 2/3 of the infections involve people who visited disneyland or had contact with an infected person that was there. the majority of people infected were not vaccinated. measles is highly contagious and has made a comeback in the u.s. because of a drop in vaccinations. there are 15 cases in the bay area. 6 in alameda county. 3 in san mateo county. and one in salano county. it usually takes 7 to 18 days

for symptoms to appear once exposed. the first symptoms are fever runny nose cough red eyes and a sore throat. then you have spots in your mouth, followed by a rash all over the body. we have an entire page devoted to the measles and how it's contracted at abc7news.com. a woman isn't hiding her anger about it. she posted a picture of her baby on her facebook page and lashed out at people opposed to vaccinations. she writes there's no science proving vaccines are related to autism. the post has been shared nearly 300,000 times. she's heard from hundreds of people. her 5-year-old daughter died from a blood infection. so far griffin is measles free.

live, from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. here's a look at today's headlines where you live at 4:30. the u.s. labor secretary came to san francisco to help mediate the west coast port dispute. work at the port of oakland resumed today after a four-day work stoppage. that dispute has been going on for months. east bay police released video today of a robbery and a shooting at a little ceasar's last night. laura anthony broke this on twitter, reporting that a distinctive gun was used, and she'll have the latest on this investigation on abc7 news at 5:00. abc7 news obtained new surveillance video of a shooting

that left a security guard dead outside of a san jose liquor store. he's being called a hero for saving his co-worker's life. we're joined live now with the story. david? >> reporter: friends and co-workers say there was no reason to shoot and kill him over a few boxes of those flavored cigars. look closely at the video we obtained. the suspects are still at large. these are the moments leading up to the death of the security guard manny zaniga. one buys a bottle of cognac. then they all leave. about a minute later one man returns and grabs a display case of swishers but trips and falls as he runs outside. the security guard doesn't realize they were stolen and reached to help to pick up the goods. that's when he was shot and killed. there's still a bullet hole in the window from one of the five

shots fired. >> i heard he passed away. i cried. >> reporter: there appears to be trouble brewing next door, the restaurant where they were employed as security guards. as they gathered to mourn his death, a reliable source said the owner of the restaurant made disparaging remarks about the guards. all of the security guards then walked away and quit. >> if they don't work tonight, i don't know what's going on. >> reporter: the state alcohol agency reports they had their license suspended for 30 days last year after investigators were performing lewd acts allowing minors to consume alcohol and allowing after-hours drinking. a friend of manny says the violence has to stop. >> we have to do something about this escalation of the violence that we have right now. >> reporter: an east san jose teen lives with violence in this

neighborhood. did this killing surprise you? >> not really, because you see it everywhere now. you turn on the channels and hear somebody got shot for no reason. >> reporter: services are still pending. david louie abc7 news. hundreds remain out of their homes today vol lowing an explosive train derailment in west virginia. 19 oil tanker cars jumped the tracks carrying more than 3 million gallons of crude oil an extremely combustible oil. >> handling this oil, it's a different product than we've handled before. it's much more volatile, which a lot of us didn't realize. you've never seen an oil spill where something blew like that. >> the fire burned one home to the ground. amazingly, nobody was injured in this disaster.

some oil did spill into a nearby river, contaminating drinking water. the exact cause of the derailment is under investigation. in virginia neighbors came together to save a child who fell in an icy pond. a man spotted the child from his bedroom window. he threw on his wet suit and ran outside. the 9-year-old grabbed the rope and they were able to pull him free. the boy should be fine. if he had been in the water any longer things could have turned out differently. happening now, mardi gras is under way in new orleans. ♪ partiers stayed up all night and braved temperatures to catch the parade this morning. dozens and dozens of floats rolled through the city. mardi gras or fat tuesday is the final way of carnivale before ash wednesday tomorrow. the party will go until midnight

california's boosting its position as a national leader in solar jobs. the solar foundation out of washington, d.c. reports that california added almost 7500 jobs last year a 15% jump from the year before. most of those jobs are in solar panel installation. 54,000 people now work in the solar industry in california. massachusetts comes in a distant second. apple stores are getting a new look. apple's head designer is working

we would like to introduce you to a remarkable bay area teenager, a star where you live. >> he turned his passion for reading into a powerful effort to spread the word about literacy in his community. >> and cornell bernard has the story. >> reporter: 15-year-old ryan is all about books. he's been reading to kids since he was a kid. >> i always had a lot of books growing up and i loved reading. and then you know you get out there in the real world and you realize not everybody hat an opportunity. >> reporter: this eagle scout and sophomore at mountain view was concerned about declining literacy rates. so he got to work. he created a youth literacy

council and started a book drive for kids without. >> we put up book deonation bins. >> reporter: and the books started rolling in. he collected a whopping 25,000 books for kids. >> i didn't expect it to get so big. i had to get an additional 200 boxes for the books. >> reporter: all those books donated to schools, libraries and charities. >> i feel like every book we donate reaches some child who needs it. >> reporter: his parts are amazed he pulled it off. >> ryan has been fantastic for his first 15 years. so just curious to see what the next 15 are be. >> reporter: he's even created a website for others to get their own book drive started. >> i'll pass the torch so that

>> reporter: they are back in business here at little ceasar's. the clerk that was shot has been released from the hospital, but the robbers, police believe there were three of them are still on the loose after committing a crime that was captured on several cameras. >> so the first suspect comes in with the pistol. >> reporter: it's over in two minutes. one man walks into little ceasar's pizza just after 8:00 holding a gun. a second man follows and jumps over the counter. a third, according to police is waiting outside apparently as a lookout. >> the suspect with the pistol takes a step back and we think that's where the shot was fired. >> reporter: that shot hits the clerk in the arm. the suspects then forced her to open the safe. the man with the gun appears to be talking on his cell phone. once cleared out the suspect jumps back over the counter leading a bloody foot
