laura? >> reporter: they are back in business here at little ceasar's. the clerk that was shot has been released from the hospital, but the robbers, police believe there were three of them are still on the loose after committing a crime that was captured on several cameras. >> so the first suspect comes in with the pistol. >> reporter: it's over in two minutes. one man walks into little ceasar's pizza just after 8:00 holding a gun. a second man follows and jumps over the counter. a third, according to police is waiting outside apparently as a lookout. >> the suspect with the pistol takes a step back and we think that's where the shot was fired. >> reporter: that shot hits the clerk in the arm. the suspects then forced her to open the safe. the man with the gun appears to be talking on his cell phone. once cleared out the suspect jumps back over the counter leading a bloody foot print.

>> the video speaks for itself on many levels. what motivates them is not known to us but it was a violent crime and certainly scared everyone involved. >> reporter: police say the gun used is very unusual. investigators say it appears to be a break front or break action single road pistol or a rifle or shotgun that's been shortened. >> it's a very distinct pistol. you can see in the video it's not a revolver and it doesn't appear to be a semiautomatic dis pistol because there's no moving parts. >> reporter: anyone with information is asked to call police. laura anthony, abc7 news. abc7 news obtained exclusive surveillance video today of a shooting that left a security guard dead outside of a san jose liquor store. he's being remembered as a hero for saving his co-worker's life. a fellow security guard says he

jumped into the line of fire after gunfire erupted during a chase with thieves saturday night. they stole cigars from thely core store, and now police are reviewing the surveillance video. a car crashed into a pond today, killing the driver. deputies say he might have been trying to kill his girlfriend, as well. she managed to jump out before it went into the water. bay area family. the coast guard found the body of a second man near coyote point today. the trouble started when a canoe tipped over after the son, his girlfriend and father left yesterday from oyster point. vic lee has the latest on it and he's live on the embarcadero. vic? >> reporter: dan, guillermo worked at that restaurant and his co-workers are devastated by his death.

out in the bay over there is where he was yesterday enjoying a late afternoon fishing trip with his son and fiance aboard a canoe that was perhaps too small to hold all of them safety. >> i told him i don't think it's a good idea because it's pretty small. >> reporter: antonio thought it was unsafe, the canoe that his nephew had just bought weeks ago. he took his fiance and father fishing late yesterday afternoon at coyote point. his uncle's words were tragically prophetic. >> the boat flipped over. >> reporter: the three were stranded in the water off coyote point, kept afloat by only life jackets. >> at some point the male decided to swim to shore to try to get help. >> reporter: hours later at 10:20, a report from their family that they were missing.

the coast guard and fire department launched a search and rescue operation. in the early morning, they heard larisa's cries for help in the dark. they rescued her. but a half hour later, they found the body of guillermo and then his son luis. workers at the restaurant were shaken by the news. the owner says he was a great employee. >> he was the type of guy that i would show up here early in the morning and he would be waiting to get in. >> reporter: luis had just joined a security company that assigned him to seton medical center. he had been here only a week. >> immediately had a wonderful impact on us here in the office, but also at the location where he was assigned. >> reporter: larisa is being treated for hypothermia at seton medical center. vic lee, abc7 news.

today, oakland police released a picture of the weapon a man was carrying when officers shot and killed him friday. the 29-year-old was holding this knife when he lunged at his mother and police. one officer opened fire and the man was killed. police say three officers were there, an eight-year veteran, a training officer and a recently sworn in officer completing his field training program. the senior officer is the one that fired. the son made a comment about committing suicide by forcing officers to shoot him. state senator john bell is introducing legislation that would pave the way for a curfew on the stairs of communications hill. those steps are popular with joggers during the day, but at night, they're a haven for drug addicts and troublemakers. >> i was really injured very

badly. >> this happens around 2:00 3:00 in the morning. people outside just laughing and when you're trying to go to sleep and you hear that outside, it's disturbing the peace. >> the senator's legislation would give local government the ability to place curfews. communications hill is in south san francisco near highway 87 and capital expressway in south san jose. operations resumed at the port of oakland today as the u.s. secretary of labor joined the contract talks. oakland is one of 29 west coast ports that took part in a four-day work stoppage. the ongoing labor dispute has really taken a toll. imports at the port of oakland were down 39% last month. the labor secretary joined the

federal mediator. president obama is speaking out on a federal judge's decision last night to block implementation of his executive order on immigration. the program was going start accepting applications tomorrow for young immigrants to afoid deportation. but the homeland security department says it's put preparations for processing the applications on hold until this matter is settled in the courts. the president says the white house will appeal this decision. >> i disagree with it. i think the law is on our side, and history is on our side. >> 26 states sued to reverse president obama's executive action. california was not one of them. the judge's decision does not affect a state program that began this year allowing undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses. a legendary figure of the civil rights area is visiting the bay area. congressman john lewis is here

working to inspire the next generation of activists. carolyn tyler has his story. she stat down with the congressman and joins us with more. >> reporter: he's the son of an alabama sharecropper. he has become a living legend and recipient of the medal of freedom. 75-year-old john lewis wants to convince today's protesters that the princeiples of nonviolence are still valid. >> i feel like i have an obligation to tell the story. >> reporter: he was witness to a turbulent time in american history. the civil rights movement of the '60s. what you only read about he lived as a young college student. organizing nonviolent protests against segregation. >> you would be sitting there in an orderly, nonviolent fashion and someone would come up and spit on us or put a lit

cigarette out on our fair. >> reporter: you saw the movie "selma?" he lived the march. lewis is the only one of the so-called big six, the organizers, still alive. he was just a teenager when he became inspired by dr. king after reading a comic book about the montgomery bus boycott. now lewis is trying to motivate the new generation and through his own experiences promote the power of peaceful protests to those seeking justice today. >> many many years ago when i was on the freedom ride, a member of the klan beat me, beat me seat mate left us bloody and unconscious. many years later, the same man and his son came to visit me in my office in washington and said, will you forgive me? >> reporter: his trilogy is called "march." the second in a series was just

covering cupertino, wine country and all the bay area this is abc7 news. mountain view police are asking for the public's help to identify two men who broke into abequipment store. video shows one using a sledge hammer to break in last monday. police say the burglars unloaded self-dis several displays of equipment. police are searching two robbers who targeted this jewelry store just as it was about to close last night. they walked into the gold shot, pointed a gun at the employee, and smashed the display cases grabbing the jewelry. they got away in a dark suv. kensington is looking for a new police chief tonight. the governing board voted to

fire chief greg harman. last night, deputy keith barrows's gun, badge and ammunition was stolen by a prostitute while asleep. >> i'm glad it's the only thing that needs to be done. he needs to go if he's going to cover things up. in the department, such serious things like that. >> sergeant bell remains on the job, though he is suspend t. many say they hope he's next to be fired. these days so much attention is on electronics but there's no substitute for a book especially for a young mind. too many kids don't have enough to read either at home or school. but two organizations are trying to bridge that gap. >> reporter: from the outside it looks like an old building in san francisco's sunset district. inside is the children's book project. it's like a food bank for books.

darla anderson is a preschool teacher. the books she takes from here are shared with other teachers in her district. >> if i can bring in the books and spark that ignition young i can close that gap. >> reporter: the books are free and teachers can take as many as they need. the project started in 1992 by vickie pollock. a reading specialist who noticed many parents in underserved communities couldn't afford them. >> one of the reasons people didn't read to their children was because they didn't have any books to read. and also people didn't realize then quite as much as they do now, how important reading to children is. >> reporter: many of these local nonprofits like the children's book project are getting the attention they need thanks to first book a national organization that provides children with new books. abc 7 and disney have donated 5,000 books to the organization.
