in for t.j. holmes. >> and i'm reena ninan. we begin with the chilling new details about the isis member seen in the group's latest execution video. this morning investigators are poring over the video to see if the masked man talking to the camera is an american. abc's bazi kanani is in washington with the latest. bazi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, reena. good morning, ryan. intelligence officials say they don't know yet who that masked man is but this morning they are getting closer to figuring that out. the new clues that could help identify this masked isis leader heard briefly in the gruesome video showing the beheading of 21 egyptian christians. >> today we are on the south of rome. >> reporter: his speaking patterns and his facial features now being carefully analyzed by u.s. intelligence officials and compared to americans known to have joined isis. >> he says south instead of soth so he's not from canada. >> reporter: linguist eric thomas says the isis fighter's distinct iveive

pronunciations point to a possible u.s. background with some arabic influence. >> i think he's american. >> reporter: officials don't know for sure how many americans have gone overseas to fight with isis, but there is growing concern about the effectiveness of the group's online recruiting. up to 40,000 isis supporters believed to be active on social media each day. the u.s. state department now trying to counter the extremist propaganda with its own social media campaign calling isis fighters cowards. >> we need answers that go beyond a military answer. >> reporter: egypt struck swiftly at isis targets in libya this week, revenge for the killing of its citizens and is now calling for u.s. and european help to route isis from libya. the recent unrest in libya has allowed isis to gain ground. still, the country's weak government condemned the egyptian air strikes as a violation of the country's sovereignty. reena, ryan. >> bazi kanani, thank you so much live in washington.

well, here at home the arctic blast across nearly half the country is causing life-threatening conditions. >> and it's trigger inging life-saving rescues. in middleton, new jersey, three teenagers found themselves stranded on a frozen lake, one of them falling through the ice. and rescue workers risked their own lives dragging her out of those icy waters. her father thankful for their heroics. >> just for them to put their life on the line like they do, there is no words for it. you're just happy that she's alive and she was okay. >> 14-year-old dana mcquade was taken to the hospital and treated for mild hypothermia. and this morning nearly a hundred thousand homes are without power in several southern states. stow and ice battered areas as far as georgia creating dangerous conditions on the roads. even walking on the sidewalk in tennessee was pretty treacherous at times. >> and the bitter cold expected to continue through the rest of the week for much of the country. >> now more snow is in store for the northeast.

accuweather's justin povick joins us now with the latest. justin, good morning. >> reena and ryan thanks and good morning to you. the northeast preparing for a bit of wintry weather on this wednesday, snow moving in. now it's not going to be a solid shield of snow. so the image here, the bark looks worse than the bite but there will be some bursts of briefly heavy snow so an inch or two possibility and that will carry forth toward the interstate 95 corridor. but i'll tell you what the cold might be worth in the north. real feels in the minus double digits. ryan and reena, back to you. >> thanks so much, justin. those derailed tanker cars are still smoldering this morning and families still evacuated which sent huge fireballs into the sky. two dozen tank cars derailed. each loaded with about 30,000 gallons of north dakota crude. a more flammable type of oil. the ntsb has called for tougher rules on those oil shipments. the justice department is

planning an appeal after a federal judge in texas blocked the president's order on immigration. the order would have provided protection from deportation for millions of immigrants here illegally. the judge's ruling came after a lawsuit brought by the governor of texas back when he was still attorney general. >> we will not sit idly by while the president ignores the law and fails to secure the border. >> i disagree with it. i think the law is on our side and history is on our side and we are going to appeal it. >> the issue will likely end up before the supreme court in a legal process that could take months to resolve. ashton carter is the new leader at the pentagon. he was sworn in as defense secretary by vice president joe biden yesterday at the white house. he replaces chuck hagel who resigned under pressure. carter is president obama's fourth defense secretary. more than 11 million people so far have signed up this year for obamacare and there's good news if you missed sunday's deadline to apply. the administration is now

offering a grace period for people who started their applications but couldn't finish them before sunday. the new deadline is this sunday. and those without insurance who don't apply will face a penalty at tax time. well, the measles outbreak is spreading with more than 140 people diagnosed so far in 17 states. most of the cases have been directly linked to disneyland and the u.s. has exported several cases to canada and mexico. most of the people who contracted the highly contagious disease contains disease were not vaccinated includes babies too young to be immunized. and we're getting a new look inside the world of the wisconsin girls accused in the slenderman stabbing. a notebook from one of the girls shows a bizarre cartoon with the caption reading "help me escape my mind." also shown in court a mutilated barbie dolls. the girls believed slenderman would kill their families if they didn't do what he said. a judge will announce next month whether the girls will be tried as adults. and in texas more defense witnesses are set to take the stand in a trial of the former marine who killed american

sniper author chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield. eddie routh's mother testified that her son changed after serving in the military and said she begged the v.a. not to release him after he was hospitalized for mental illness. now, attorneys mounting an insanity defense showed jurors kyle's gun claiming routh was so paranoid he felt threatened by the weapons. another big admissions blunder puts hundreds on an emotional roller coaster. carnegie mellon university e-mailed letters to 800 politics welcoming them to its masters program in computer science. hours later they had to send out a second notice saying the original e-mails were a mistake. those applicants were actually not accepted. >> oh. >> heartbreaking. >> heartbreaking, indeed. in case you missed it it's ash wednesday. >> and that means that yesterday was fat tuesday and mardi gras is starting to wind down. there you see it in new orleans. these are live pictures showing the partying winding down but winding down in new orleans

well, gas prices are up slightly by 8 cents from a week ago. the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.27. that's still a buck 11 lower than this time last year. gas prices typically rise at this time of year because of refinery maintenance but oil and gas prices are expected to remain at these bargain levels at least for the time being. >> not bad. an embarrassing mistake for doughnut giant krispy kreme. a shop in britain advertised a kkk promotion. in this instance, the initials stood for krispy kreme klub with a "k" but they also, of course, stand for ku klux klan. after the outrage online the promotion was dropped and the company apologized. the growing demand for healthier food is affecting the candy aisle. nestle is removing artificial flavors and colors from its butterfinger nestle crunch and other chocolates by the end of the year. nestle the first candy company to make such a move in the u.s. but others are expected

beautiful, isn't it? you're looking at a bright fire fireball streaking across the sky early yesterday and captured on nasa cameras. it's being described as a 500-pound space rock moving at 45,000 miles an hour and it was seen from pennsylvania new york, michigan and ohio. now for a look at your morning road condition, snow showers from the mid-atlantic into new england are expected to make roads slippery and showers could make roads slick for the pacific northwest and the south florida area. a surprising turn of events in that las vegas road rage killing. a case grabbing national attention. police now saying the 44-year-old victim was likely not followed home immediately after the incident. >> they say she went home got her sons and they grabbed their guns. a handgun in fact and went looking for the suspect. abc's ted rowlands has more. >> reporter: the heartbroken family of tammy meyers a las vegas mother of four killed outside her home over an apparent case of road rage is desperate for justice.

>> my mom was protecting me this night. you know she was doing what every mother would do. >> reporter: according to police meyers was driving home from this junior high school parking lot where she had been teaching her 15-year-old to drive when she got into an argument with three men in a silver or gray sedan. after getting her 22-year-old son who had a handgun she went looking for the men in her neighborhood and eventually her son and the suspects ended up in a gunfight outside the meyers' home. >> he returns home. when the firing was done he found that his mother who was standing off to his side and behind him had been struck by gunfire. >> mire had been shot in the head dying a day and a half later. while the search continues for the man in this sketch and this car caught on surveillance video, the family is offering up tammy meyers' prized there could be more surveillance video out there. they're hoping it will surface over the next few days and can use it to identify the missing

suspects. ryan reena. lange police now reviewing surveillance video that may show the deadly car crash involving bruce jenner. the video from a bus traveling on the pacific coast highway was handed over to investigators friday. jenner had said he only recalled hitting a white lexus and pushing it into oncoming traffic but the video shows him slamming into a second car, as well. >> scuba divers found the largest treasure trove of gold coins discovered in israel. members of a diving club accident accidentally stumbled on to them. dating back more than a thousand years. they thought the coins were from toys like a game of some sort. they're now being described as priceless. >> talk about a windfall. alex rodriguez the ever controversy yankee has apologized to fans. the slugger issued a five paragraph handwritten apology for the mistakes that led to my suspension. a-rod missed the entire 2014

the bay bridge toll plaza has conditions from the east bay toward san francisco with a couple of cars whiching in the far right -- couple of cars which are in the far right hand lane. northbound traffic is not seeing any hiccups. i will tell you where the hotspots are when they develop. >> topping our news happening right new, san jose police want you to look at video hoping it will lead police to a suspect in the shooting death of a security guard that was offer a box of cheap cigars. matt? >> police have this surveillance video and it shows exactly what went down moments before the shooting. check it out the suspected walk into the liquor for less store on saturday night and they did not stay long. they man came back in, grabbed a display of cigars and ran out. he tripped and fell. a security guard, manny zuniga
