and good thursday morning to you all. yes, we're starting again talking about some arctic air. even central florida this time bracing for record cold tonight. >> take a look at niagara falls, nearly frozen. the mercury there reaching 13 below zero. also, another picture for you out of north carolina. you see that there, that's the front of a jeep. the icy sculpture of the car's grill left standing after the vehicle pulled away. let's get all the updates now from abc's bazi kanani. >> reporter: new warnings in the hard-hit boston area this morning. already reports of more than 80 dangerous roof collapses, the heavy snow sliding off the roof of this ice rink buried five people. >> one you could tell was hurt like the neck, and then the lady looked very hurt too. >> reporter: the record snowfall in massachusetts not done yet. >> i just want it gone. i just want it gone. >> reporter: the arctic blast

hitting 24 states, a challenge for drivers on icy roads, black ice hidden beneath the snow. in nashville this car just misses a police cruiser. farmers in southern states covering up crops to protect them, and where schools are closed for a third day, food banks are trying to make sure needy kids get fed. >> now they're having to wait until mom and dad come home or in hopes that there is something available when mom and dad come home. >> reporter: the coast guard using special ice breakers to keep 140 miles of the delaware river north of philadelphia flowing for commercial vehicles and for their operations in an emergency. the deep freeze being appreciated by at least some this morning. >> beautiful, it's awesome. >> reporter: tourists drawn to the frozen spectacle of niagara falls. bazi kanani, abc news, washington. well, new englanders are probably a little less thrilled with the beauty of their winter

wonderland by now, and today's weather is not going to help. >> accuweather's justin povick has our forecast for us. good morning to you, justin. >> t.j. and reena, thanks, and good morning. much of the northeast waking up to colder temperatures and gusty winds, but for residents of coastal new england, well, you have more snow on the way, and, yes, there will be some heavy amounts of snow, portland, bangor to eastport, 6 to 12 inches of snow before it's all said and done and there will be a lot of travel delays along northern sections of interstate 95. for all of us, like i said, it will be cold but here's how cold it feels when you factor in the temperature and the wind, minus 20 around pittsburgh in the afternoon, minus teens for much of the northeast. well, the weekend is not as cold, but there is the threat for another system with rain, sleet and more snow. t.j. and reena, back to you. >> all right, justin, thank you, as always. we turn now to a frightening story from southern california. nearly 200 patients exposed to a deadly bacteria at a hospital. this happened at the ronald reagan ucla medical center.

at least seven patients confirmed to have been infected by this bacteria. two have died. that bacteria is resistant to antibiotics. the patients were exposed to it through contaminated medical instruments. they've all been sent home but home testing kits were sent to them. those tests will then be analyzed by the hospital. president obama said the u.s. is not at war with muslims. he told a white house summit extremist groups have corrupted the religion for recruiting. he said blunt inging the appeal of groups like isis will require a global effort including cooperating from mainstream muslims. >> of course, the terrorists do not speak for over a billion muslims who reject their hateful ideology. no religion is responsible for terrorism. people are responsible for violence and terrorism. >> he's taking criticism for not calling extremists terrorists, muslim extremists. he argues that doing so empowers them giving them the recruiting help they're desperate for. the brother of slain hostage kayla mueller says he has a hole in his soul that will never be

replaced. the american aid worker was killed while being held hostage by isis. she was remembered last night in a moving tribute in her arizona hometown. hundreds of people, many of them wearing pink ribbons, attended this candlelight vigil. president obama getting little praise for his secret service director pick. acting director joe clancy will fill the position permanently. some say clancy, who has 27 years with the embattled agency, is exactly what it does not need. another insider said that the white house calls clancy a reformer who's earned the president's trust. well, jeb bush is distancing himself from his family legacy while offering his harshest criticism yet of president obama's foreign policy. speaking in chicago yesterday, the likely 2016 republican presidential candidate accused president obama of being, quote, inconsistent and indecisive while leaving the u.s. less influential in the world. bush also said his views are shaped by his own thinking and experiences. >> just for the record, one more time, i love my brother, i love

[ laughter ] and i admire their service to the nation and the difficult decisions that they had to make, but i'm my own man and my views are shaped by my own -- >> he loves the family. ahead of that appearance bush's aides released a list of experts who will offer him foreign policy advice, and three of them served under, yep, his older brother. oregon now has the nation's first openly bisexual governor. kate brown sworn in following the resignation of fellow democrat john kitzhaber. he left office last week in the midst of an influence peddling scandal. brown praised the former governor but said her office must restore oregon's trust. an explosion in an exxonmobil refinery rattled a southern california community. a lot of people thought it was an earthquake. it sent flames into the air and an ash-like substance into neighborhoods and authorities say the power of the blast in torrance equaled a 1.7 magnitude earthquake. four people were injured. the destruction to production has already caused a spike in gas prices in california. meanwhile, a water main

break caused a huge mess in a hollywood neighborhood sending 100,000 gallons of water gushing into the streets. several cars were submerged. basement floods. an 18-inch cast iron pipe that burst was installed back in 1926. but officials say it had no history of leaks. still ahead, what's behind a girl scout cookie backlog. also happening now, an all out search and pet owners desperate for answers. a van filled with their beloved dogs stolen, and it is still missing. plus, caught on camera an inmate slips past jail guards. how he pulled it off.

well, the federal reserve is apparently in no hurry to raise interest rates. minutes from the fed's meeting in late january expressed growing concerns about inflation and lingering problems in the labor market if rates go up too soon. policymakers indicate interest rates will remain near steer row. muhammad ali is making a comeback of sorts nearly three decades after his last fight. he's signing a new athletic wear. the collaboration will produce footwear and accessories using the 73-year-old boxer's name and image. no terps on the deal. hold the presses, folks. your girl scout cookies may be delayed. there's a shortage of cookies apparently. there are plenty of these tagalongs and the samoas, thank goodness but in some areas there is a shortage of thin mints. >> what? those are the best ones. >> that's why there is a shortage. the bakery rescheduled deliveries of all the varieties in those counsels. about a fourth that are sold are

crews will be plowing highways in new england once again today. drivers will encounter flurries further south and in the upper midwest roads will be wet and pacific northwest snow showers in the northern rockies. if you're flying airport delays likelyiest in washington, philadelphia, new york and boston. well, now to chicago where despite frigid temperatures a serious search is going on right now. >> police are looking for a minivan, in one. why? well, this belongs to a doggie day care. there were six dogs inside yesterday afternoon when the van was stolen by two armed men. the driver was bringing the dogs home at the time of this incident and the dogs' owners, you can understand, are concerned right now. >> i got a text from my wife saying that our dog had been kidnapped, and i couldn't even comprehend what that meant. i'm really worried that she may not survive the night if we can't find her.

>> well, the van is an unmarked 2002 chrysler town and country. a good samaritan tried to stop the suspects from driving off, but that didn't work out. now to a bold jail break in idaho. the inmate actually captured on camera as he escapes. authorizes say this is roy bellush coming out of a cleaning closet just as a worker starts to open the door. he apparently made his way to the lobby of a county lockup by working his way through a crawl space in the ceiling of a utility room initially facing burglary and petty theft charges. now a nationwide warrant has been issued for his arrest. also look closely at the side of this building we're showing you here, there's a guy there, he's kind of dangling. he's stuck outside the second story window trying to get away from police. this is in vermont. well, a ladder was used to bring him down. the man was helped to the ground, had to be treated for minor injuries at the hospital. now he was trying to run from police because they were issuing or doing a raid there at the time, but it turns out he's not

even the target of the raid. so he was actually released. another guy inside was arrested on drug charges. well, a man who was about to go on tour with rapper nicki minaj was stabbed to death after a bar fight in philadelphia. the killer also left another tour member in critical condition. nicki minaj tweeted that the men were in the city for rehearsals and described the man killed as a great guy taken by another senseless act of violence. well, there's new hope for women battling an aggressive form of breast cancer. one in five has a type known a her2-positive normally treated with chemotherapy but adding a second drug can add 16 months to patients' lives. doctors are rushing to make this the standard therapy for her2-positive. >> this is the way cancer treatments are going. understanding why a particular cell has become cancerous and then targeting that. this is a great example of that and it's fantastic news for women and their families. >> there's no significant change

10:00 in the sports bar on alum rock avenue. officers fund two men suffering from gunshot wound each. they were taken to the hospital. there is no word on their conditions. officers interviewed people and took evidence. the restaurant does not appear to be open wrong with the grand open in january and a public notice of the application to sell alcohol on the front door. they are trying to figure out the motive and the sicks behind the -- and circumstances behind the shooting. no one has been arrested so far. >> a mysterious death in gilroy now is a murder investigation. police are looking if two people of interest in the murder of a man in his home. surveillance video shows two women inside the store in east san jose. investigator say they victim's have it card hours after his death. the 56-year-old's body was discovered in his
