7:02 am
takes the stage. wow. and we had a chance to talk to him. we'll share that coming up. we're grateful to have a break from the weather you have there in the east. >> you got to talk to neil patrick harris. >> robin, i'm grateful i'm getting on a plane right after the show. see you. we do want to get to the bitter cold. nearly 200 million americans feeling the deep freeze again this morning. dozens of cities hitting record lows. our extreme weather team tracking it all. we begin with ginger outside the studio where it's barely above zero. i don't need to tell that to you, ginger. >> ah! that's what so many people are waking up and doing. they're seeing the temperature on their phone or whatever it is and they're going, it can't be real. it's 2 here in new york city. the wind chill, 11 below. we have broken a record. you know who else has? key west. they've made it down into the 50s. poor key west. miami tied a record. orlando did, too. charlotte has broken it. pittsburgh, detroit.

so many places waking up breaking their records. and now looking at another storm. winter storm watches, ice storm warning for nashville this weekend. a big deal going in from the west. it will be the cold front that creates that. it merges with a warm front. and this is what i'm concerned about. the big pink blob from little rock through nashville. all the way up through the northeast. your sunday along i-95, i-80 in pennsylvania could be a wreck. and even in boston, another storm. that's where just north of boston our tom llamas is. in wilmington, massachusetts. >> reporter: ginger, good morning to you. it feels like negative 12. the ice is the real danger. this church looks like an ice palace. and check out these icicles, two stories tall. some of them razor sharp. they're really heavy. we were able to break off a chunk safely. this is about 70 pounds. if this hits you, forget it. game over. this morning, the big chill. 21 states hit with a deep

in northern massachusetts. slabs of ice six inches thick. so solid, they could only be broken up with an ax and a mallet. this is probably a good 45 pounds right here. after more than 100 reported roof collapses in the last week alone, some are fighting back with firepower. watch this man blowtorch the chunk of ice off a building in downtown boston. and that outfit we were with last night, olympic roofing, telling us they're getting 180 calls a day. as soon as they clear the ice, it reappears in the morning. because it's so cold. george? >> we can see it. okay, tom, thank you very much. we're going to get the latest on the fight against isis. the president wrapped up a white house summit with some tough talk. as the pentagon lace out new plans to take the fight to the terror group in iraq. the president ramping up the war against isis. trying to make it clear that the u.s. is not at war with islam. >> reporter: that's right, george.
7:06 am
the president said that it is an ugly lie to say that the united states is at war with islam. saying instead, the u.s. is at war with those who have perverted islam. as he made those comments, the pentagon outlined plans for the largest military operation we have yet seen against isis. this would be an effort to retake the city of mosul in iraq. this is the crown jewel for isis. iraq's second largest city a place they have controlled since last summer. this is an operation the pentagon said would involve 20,000 or more iraqi troops going in, specifically trained by the united states for this mission. the operation would begin in april or may. and, george, it's possible this operation would include some embedded u.s. troops for the purposes of calling in air strikes. that is a decision the president himself would make. >> the white house taking incoming in a different way. the former mayor of new york, rudy giuliani, taking on the president with some very tough words, saying he doesn't think the president loves america.
7:07 am
>> reporter: yeah, and giuliani prefaced the comment by saying it may be a terrible thing to say. the white house response came from principal deputy press secretary eric schultz, who said, i agree with him on one thing. it was a horrible thing to say. >> thank you, jon. we'll have more sunday on "this week." all right, george, to the latest on the deadly road rage incident in las vegas that left a mother of four dead. and arrest was made thursday after a tense standoff with police. authorities are looking for a second suspect. kendis gibson has the very latest. 7:09 am
say. >> i couldn't tell you this before. he knew where i lived. >> reporter: nowsch's arrest just the latest twist in this bizarre and ever-changing case. initially, police say meyers was shot as a result of random road rage while teaching her daughter how to drive. later, authorities revealed she went home after the encounter, rounding up her oldest son, who grabbed a gun, and then helped his mom track down the driver. that's when the suspect allegedly followed them home and shot tammy in their driveway. this morning, police say they're still looking for a second suspect. while they believe nowsch pulled the trigger, they're still not sure who was driving the car. this morning, many are wondering what took so long for an arrest. myers lived and was killed right there. and the 19-year-old suspect, he was a one-minute walk away around that corner. he's now facing three felony charges, george? >> thank you, kendis. let's get more from ryan smith, our legal analyst. as kendis said, a bizarre story.
7:10 am
tough for prosecutors. they have a lot to sort through. as they focus on these charges. >> that's right. it could be a slam-dunk case for prosecutors. if you believe the family's current account. which story do you believe? because in their current account, they're driving around the neighborhood, they come upon these folks. these potential suspects. then they leave. in that sense, prosecutors will say they're deescalating. the suspects follow them to the home and open fire. that would point to the suspects being the responsible parties. and the others trying to deescalate. >> one of the things we look at, does nowsch claim he was firing in self-defense? >> that will be tough to prove. because under the current story, they're saying he fold them home and then opened fire. so where is the threat? he would have to claim imminent threat that was deadly and he was trying to fend that off with equal force. and he wouldn't be able to show that. but there's so many unanswered questions here. if they knew this guy, knew he was bad news, why not call the police? why not call 911? take yourself out of that situation. that will make the case harder for prosecutors. >> meantime, another suspect could be on the loose.
7:11 am
ryan thank you very much. >> sure. let's go to amy with today's other top stories. we begin with the superbug outbreak at a los angeles hospital. raising concern across the country now. the bacteria linked to two deaths, but nearly 180 patients may have been exposed, raising more questions about the design of a hard-to-clean medical instrument used on thousands of patients every year in the united states. here's abc's cecilia vega. >> reporter: this morning, we have learned an 18-year-old student is among the victims of a potentially deadly superbug outbreak. at this los angeles hospital. >> his prognosis at this time is guarded but optimistic. >> reporter: an attorney for the teen telling us he spent much of the last three months in icu, after undergoing a common medical procedure at ronald reagan medical center, and he remains in the hospital this morning. nearly 0 200 patients treated

7:13 am
the 29-year-old iraqi refugee was arrested at detroit's airport. agents became concerned when he couldn't explain why he bought a one-way ticket. a stunning view from space as two massive storms lashed the coast of australia. look at that. they're being called the cyclone sandwich. winds up to 180 miles an hour. ripping down trees, tearing off roofs. triggering flash floods. the surf was so strong, this shark washed up on the beach. a big scare in the sky during this air show in india. two stunt planes collided, clipping wings during a maneuver. despite the impact, the pilots kept control and landed safely. later, you could see the extent of the damage. amazing that no one was injured. and finally, it appears spellcheck is so 2014 at the white house. take a look. staffers misspelled february on a media schedule on february 6th.
7:14 am
okay. it could happen once, right? well, no. there it was again. misspelled on february 9th. and again on february 12th. yet again yesterday. but it's not just the schedule that's misspelled. take a look at the white house blog. february, of course, wow. this begs the question, why did it take reporters so long to notice? it's february 20th, right? we finally figured it out. we finally saw it. >> just abbreviate it. >> spellcheck it. >> i always remember, the ru is tricky. robin already out in l.a. she's at the dolby theater. hey, robin. >> hey, there, george, and everyone. two days until hollywood's biggest night. we're inside the dolby theater with exclusive access. on sunday night, this place will be filled with the biggest stars in the world. our movie guru, chris connelly. i always wanted to be a guru. >> ohm. ohm.
