i don't want my family to be without power. it's much more personal to me for that reason. i don't think there's any place i really would rather be. it's happening now in san francisco, where a huge fire is burning in the mission district. hello. thank you for joining us. let's get right to our breaking news. this is a look at the mission district from our sutro tower camera. you can see san francisco firefighters responding to a huge fire at 15th and church streets. it's been send up massive flames and black smoke. cornell bernard is live at the scene with the latest. cornell? >> reporter: church street completely shut down at market. a lot of chaos and a lot of confusion with people wondering what is going on. firefighters getting a handle on this fire at church and 15th.

two three-story apartment buildings caught fire about 4:15 this afternoon and quickly went to three alarms. smoke and flames got very, very intense. windows at the apartment complex were blown out on to the street. firefighters say at this point there are no injuries. that is very preliminary but at this point they say no injuries. a house cat, though was found in one of the units unresponsive. possibly suffering from smoke inhalation. itself was given oxygen at the scene by emts and we're told that cat will be okay. firefighters getting the upper hand on the fire. the flames have been extinguished, the smoke has now dissipated. this is a very crowded area. we have victorians constructed very very -- well, tightly together and again this could

have been a lot worse, but looks like they have the upper hand on this fire. at 15th and market street. live in san francisco, abc7 news. >> thank you cornell. today's fire is similar to a devastating one in the mission district on january 28th on 22nd and mission street, about eight minutes from today's fire. one person died in that incident. six people injured 40 displaced. reports surfaced after the fire the building did not have sprinklers on two floors. in other breaking news news, san jose police say a driver stuck a car then veered off the road, hitting at least two people looking now at a live picture of the accident scene. one of the victims is in critical condition. the driver then tried to drive away but police were able to arrest him. alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash.

we have a reporter gathering information now and will have a live report on abc7 news at 6:00 and get break news updates anytime on twitter at abc7 news bay area. some confusion tonight on how the new dialing system works for the 415 area code. starting today, one second after midnight. dialing the 415 area code while calling a 415 number you're now required to use a 1. callers using a land line must dial 1 first and then 415 and the number elm the change is to make way for the new area code 6 28 underlay. number new numbers will be assigned 62 area coached dozens of people called the nine one call center today. >> sometimes when people are confused they call government numbers and 9-1-1 is easy to remember. 9-1-1 is for emergencies. >> the callers not dialing directly will receive a recorded message instructing them to dial

recover. no word on suspects or motive. ♪ which side are you on? ♪ >> developing news out of emeryville. the home depot on hollis avenue is shut down because of protesters blocking the incident. they're demanding police release the video of the shooting death of a 28-year-old. officer says they shot and killed the oak land woman after she ran from the store, tried to carjack and turned a gun on them. police will not release the video since it's evidence. in entertainment news the academy awards are just about 24 hers away. fans are heading to hollywood to catch a glimpse of the red carpet, while organizers make sure it stays dry katie marzullo is live in hollywood. is the buzz building, katie? >> it is. live from the red carpet and it

the u.s. is considering slowing its military exit from afghanistan. the u.s. defense secretary ash carter visit the country today and says the u.s. may keep a larger than planned troop presence this year and next because the new afghan government is proving to be a more reliable partner. he says president obama will discuss a range of options when the afghan president visits the white house next month. the current withdrawal plan would cut troop levels in half by the end of the year and remove nearly all. >> 2016. sheryl jennings had the opportunity to travel to afghanistan with the san rafael

a busy day for astronauts at the international space station. during the space walk two astronauts successfully routed more than 300 feet of cable for the arrival of the new american-made capsules. rewiring is needed to prepare for the 2017 arrival of the

the san francisco police were among those who braved chilly bay waters to raise money for special olympics. [shouting] >> chief was among some colorful characters who took part in the polar plunge this morning. the chilly dip and 5k run raised money for special olympics in northern company. they raised a minimum of 125 tuesday each and goes to support the nearly 2,000 special olympics athletes in northern california and nevada. we call it the polar plunge but i bet later a lot of people just jumped in the water to cool off, just like any other february day right? >> so typical around here. temperatures well above normal for this week and ahead looking at a typical february feel for your sunday and monday. so prepare for a cooldown, live doppler 7hd right now giving you the all-clear up above. so we'll take you outside. stephanie posting this picture to my twitter page of the weather where you live.

clouds trying to push in along the coast but temperatures the high, 67 in san francisco. six degrees better than the normal this time of the year. temperaturewise along the coast, we have dropped back into the 50s. 59 in downtown san francisco oakland, 59. san jose, 62. concord, 65. satellite and radar shows you a void of cloud cover off the coast. high pressure anchored there with high pressure. you get to thinking -- squashes the cloud cover but the taping is snow around salt lake city. it will scrape by our region, over the next 24 hours, clouds along the peninsula perhaps a spotty shower around the south bay, but otherwise it's lots of sunshine for citizen. if your travels take you south of san jose, that's a better chance to see sprinkles and unfortunately l.a. tomorrow has wet weather to in the forecast. the red carpet has a chance of
