live from the kgo tv product daft center, this is abc 7 news. >> police firing tear gas in the parking lot 0 a kaiser hospital in the north bay this morning. it all began as a home invasion in a normally quiet santa rosa area. now, one suspect is dead, two are arrested, and many questions remain. good morning. i'm eric thomas. cheryl is on assignment. >> investigators are sorting out a bizarre confrontation that involved a gun battle between the home own somewhere intruders. it began past midnight at a family's home on acacia lane.

>> reporter: police say that the home that was innedvaded and the home next door both had marijuana growing at them. in the home where the criminals stormed into, there were two small children sleeping. when armed men broke down the door before 1:00 this morning they got quits a surprise armed homeowner. >> during that exchange two suspects were shot and fled the scene. >> reporter: police put out an alert for officers to watch hospitals for the suspect vehicle. and an hour later a sheriff's deputy spotted it pulling into the kaiser permanente parking lot. >> the suspects barricaded them in the vehicle and refused to come out. he was convinced these were the suspects from the home invasion. >> reporter: the stand-off lasted 30 minutes and then officers fired a tear gas canister into the truck. >> one subject has critical gunshot wounds and another located deceased in the backseat

of the vehicle. >> reporter: officers think they know why the men wanted inside the home. >> it appears that that home was targeted due to the fact there was large quantities of marijuana being grown at that residence. >> scary. definitely scary, yeah. with two little kids, you know, in a nice part of santa rosa. >> reporter: stacey matthew lives behind the home. she says she has seen young men but never any children. she didn't know what was going on inside. did you know there was marijuana in the neighborhood? >> no, i have no idea. >> as for that third suspect who was driving the truck he first told officers that he just picked up the other two and was giving them a ride to the hospital. investigators interviewed him and determined he was here and part of the home invasion. they say they will be charged. no one was hurt here at the home. at this point they say the man was shooting in self-defense. they haven't gone inside to determine whether he was growing

the marijuana legally. reporting live in santa rosa, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. a vallejo man is under arrest after trying to run over police officers with his car before 11:30 last night near mayfair avenue and lassen street. officers tried to stop the 23-year-old gerald brown, who was driving a honda that had been reported stolen. police say he led them on a chase and slammed into a squad car, when they shot brown several times. he was taken to the hospital. this isn't the first time it's happened. brown is on parole for trying to run over several police officers in 2012. he served time for that crime. police in campbell are trying to figure out who's behind a trio of car fires that broke out earlier. 911 operators got the call around 4:20 for three vehicles on fire behind the campbell plaza shopping center. this video shows some of the damage. investigators are calling the fire suspicious because all three started in the vehicle's

interiors not engine xarment compartments. >> a man is jailed for $50,000 bond, for robbing girl scouts out selling cookies. matt keller is live in san jose. >> reporter: 600 is a lot of money specially for young girl scouts but in the end police officers earned their merit badge that day. it wasn't the thin mints or do-si-dos that attracted a treef to the safeway in san jose but rather it was fund-raiser money for the local girl scout troop. police say 23-year-old cody forcibly took a cash box from a 10-year-old girl scout who was selling cookies and took off. >> it's unbelievable. i can't imagine somebody can do something like that to kids. they're out here working hard doing it for a good cause. unbelievable. >> that's pretty low to take something from a sweet group of people, especially children. >> reporter: but this cookie caper did not end on a sour note. a witness gave police the

she has good reasons it smile, eric. that is because she has come forward as one of the three winners of the $564 million powerball jackpot. she's holding a news conference, north carolina, rally. she will get $127 million before taxes if she chooses the lump sum payment. >> a lady came forward last week, marie holmes looks a lot like her, mother of one or two kids and said she had won a third of the jackpot. so this very well could be marie holmes. i see a picture of her on the website here that looks extraordinarily like her. so we'll check and make sure but i believe that's her. >> all right. congratulations. >> new this morning new jersey firefighters are spraying foam on a burning gasoline tank that overturns and burst into flames. the tanker was carrying 9,000 gallons of fuel when it flipped on a free way on ramp.

nearby homes have been evacuated and traffic is being diverted. the driver managed to get out of the truck but it's not clear whether they suffered any injuries. >> shopping malls across the country are stepping up security after chilling new video calling for a terror attack. al qaeda's affiliate in somealia released a video urging extremists to attack western malls including those in the u.s., uk canada the video specifically urges violence against the mall of america in minnesota. the video also warns more attacks like the 2013 assault on mall in kenya that left 67 people dead. >> happening now, makeshift cave used for gambling at a fresno home is unsafe and roped off after it was discovered by police. officers responding to a domestic disturbance call stumbled on to a chicken coop mounted on skateboard wheels. when they rolled it aside they found the entrance and they squeezed themselves in finding evidence that the hand-dug cave

used as a gambling parller. they confiscated illegal gambling machines. three men were arrested and face a variety of charges. new fears about a drug resistance superbug. north carolina health officials say cre has killed two people there, 13 others have been treated. that news comes after last week's announcement 179 patient as the ucla medical center has been exposed to the superbug in southern california. two of them died. doctors say the bacteria kills half of those infected. nearly a dozen college students in connecticut are being treated for drug overdose. overdosing on exta city two students are in critical condition. they are trying to trace the source of the drugs to see if the students received a bad batch. a potentially deadly danger when you call 911. >> the problem has the

scare of some sort. all of the kids are standing outside a school campus right now. police are not telling us yet what is going on but lots of officers. they have shut down broadway. this campus located at 890 broadway. and also wood side road is nearby. they've got parts of that shut down as well. very busy area off of the freeway. you can see police with students, teachers outside that is a magnate school for technology in redwood city. we'll continue to follow this. >> and as you can tell from the sky 7 hd pictures plenty of sun out there. >> that's right. let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco. winds have died down? >> winds are still up a bit. especially up here on the fourth floor of the building. yeah it's still a chill in the air because of the winds. good morning everybody. if you're heading out it feels cooler than what the thermometer says. the system is so cold look what

it did in vegas in the overnight hours and the morning, especially the western side, higher elevation in on the strip. we didn't hear of snow on the strip, it turned to rain. you can see snow coming down. big fat wet flakes falling and some accumulating though the ground was a little warm. if it falls fast enough it will still make a little bit of a dent there and make everything white. let's bring it back here at home. you can see this clean canadian air unlimited visibility. but it's bone dry, as we talked about last week. dew points we measure how much moisture's in the air. if the air temperature cooled down to the dew point that's when it becomes saturated. that's when relative humanity reaches 100%. we're not going to do that because they're so low. and we're not going to reach lows -- these dew points tonight, which is something we use at times to forecast low temperatures. we're not going to be in the teens and 20s. but definitely 30s are coming back. if you have a scratchy throat

eyes watering, lips chapped here's the reason why, almost desert-like relative humidities and those will go down. mid level moisture back its way towards us in the form of a few clouds. that's it. otherwise we'll have a lot of sunshine. even your ferry ride home is going to be brisk. maybe not quite as much as it was yesterday. we have white caps out there. east bay hills had a gust around 41 miles per hour. every once in a while the winds get aggressive. temperatures mid-50s to low 60s under mostly sunny sky. tapering to clear calmer, and cooler conditions tonight. and there you see the light showers friday. here's a look at the low as it spins away from us. the distance between that and high pressure made a tremendous pressure grade and that's why we have gusty wind. but even with that thermometer will show low to mid-60s, maybe upper 60 in oakland with

downsloping winds. tonight mid-30s to low 40s inland. upper 30s to mid-40s around the bay. thursday, friday and saturday. some scattered showers back in the forecast. so will breezes at 60 degree temperatures. until then we'll warm from the 30s and 40s into the low to upper 60s tomorrow. same thing wednesday. we may touch 70 thursday before the next storm comes. it's looking like less than a tenth, maybe .1255 of an inch of rain in february. if we get some great. time not so much. >> thanks a lot. the federal communications commission is working on a fix after a national investigation exposes a deadly flaw with 911 calling. the report says 911 operators are often left in the dark about a caller's location and that's leading to long delays in response times. the paper poured over call
