a wild weather tonight around the bay area. lightning lights up the skies, caught on our tower camera. lots of hail. this video sent to us from a viewer. it's dark, but you can see and hear the hail falling. take a look at this striking video from the north bay. thick hail fell on the square in sonoma. in the south bay fans at the san jose quakes' new stadium got more than they bargained for. good evening everyone. i'm katy marzullo. families in the south san jose couldn't believe their eyes when they looked out and saw what looked like snow. it was in a few neighborhoods where the unusual wintry mix

hit. tiffany wilson joins us live with a look at what remains. tiffany, last i saw you you were threatening drew and i with a snowball fight. >> i was threatening. but i don't think i can make it 70 miles up to san francisco. it looks like a winter resort all around me. still a lot of the hail on the ground. earlier it felt like packing snow, that's when i was threatening you with the snowballs. now it's a little bit harder, turned into sheets of ice. earlier families were making the most of it. this afternoon the meadowlands looked like a neighborhood from the midwest. >> i said, what happened? it's a miracle. >> reporter: hail as it fell at one point he joked about the need for a snowplow. these kids focused on snowballs or should we call them hail balls instead. have you ever had a snow ball fight like this before? >> no. my hands are frozen right now. >> usually we have to go to lake

tahoe or way up in the mountains to find snow. now yes just need to go in our front yard. >> reporter: the sidewalk snowball fight is the first for the 9-year-old. but not the first for the neighborhood. >> it's probably been maybe 20 years since it last snowed. it's been a very long time. >> reporter: they loaf seeing their car covered and backyard saturated. >> we're not afraid of a little bit of cold. >> reporter: families swarmed around a white lawn. some drove over from a few miles away. >> we thought we'll let the kids play in the snow. >> reporter: father and sons snapped selfies by a snowman. we'll see what the police say about frosty's lack of seat belts. >> definitely a lot of fun. >> reporter: the hail is here gone tomorrow, the south san jose neighborhood said it's a memory they won't soon forget. >> we're all having fun here. it's fantastic.

as the storm moves through, the results, lightning and hail. look at that. more hail on the cars on the grass. and that was a common scene where the storms popped up earlier this afternoon. everything has calmed down this evening. a beautiful end to the week. more wet weather possibly on the way. the full forecast in just a few minutes. katie? >> thank you drew. it was windy weather that closed part of the great highway in san francisco. you can see sand covering the southbound lanes between slope boulevard and skyline and it is expected to remain closed through the weekend. firefighters suspect lightning sparked a small fire tonight in the bayview hunters point area in san francisco. it happened just west of interstate 280 behind an industrial building on revere avenue. one witness said she heard a loud crash, walked toward the noise and then heard a lot of crackling. >> you could actually see the smoke. so i ran back home and called

the fire department. they said they haven't seen anything like that in a long, long time. and it was caused by lightning. >> you can see a few burnt leaves in the brush behind the building. san francisco firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire. the storm is bringing lots of snow to the sierra. it's the first major snowfall in two months. and it is causing some problems on the roads. chains are required right now so be sure to check if you're heading to the sierra tomorrow. this picture was tweeted by the truckee fire department along with the warning, be safe out there. the storm, though, good news for ski resorts. this is video from north star california resort. they received 16 inches of snow since yesterday afternoon and another 6 inches expected overnight. check out the weather anytime with the abc 7 app, free on apple's app store or google play. we have more information at

abc7news.com/app. other news now. the mother of a 20-day-old boy found dead in a swampy area near the sacramento river has been arrested. police believe the 23-year-old samantha green is responsible for her baby's death. >> reporter: the investigation into the death of the baby took a turn after they interrogated the baby's mother. >> she made comments about she was there so many hours screaming and hollering. >> reporter: investigators determined that samantha's tale of events never lined up and arrested her on murder charges early saturday morning. >> we have come to the conclusion that mrs. samantha green was the sole individual responsible for the death of her child. >> reporter: it was monday when family members reported baby justice and samantha missing from the home. the 23-year-old mom was found a day later wet and hysterical and

without her baby. an intensive rescue effort for the baby went through the night. it was wednesday when detectives found the lifeless body of a newborn baby lying in the brush near a tree. it would later be determined that he died from either hypothermia or drowned. from the beginning samantha claimed to have been abducted. and her family stood by her side. >> she was abducted, despite the fact that they haven't been able to prove that. we totally believe her. >> reporter: samantha even gave detectives names of the kidnappers. in the end investigators said they found no validity to the claims. >> we eliminated some of the allegations and some of the comments that were made. and no stone was left unturned. >> reporter: samantha green is being held on the murder charges here at this women's detention facility. she's on a no bail hold. detectives say their investigation is far from over.

abc 7 news. there's a memorial in san jose tonight created by friends of a teenager killed in an early morning car crash. investigators believe two cars may have been racing at the time of the crash. this is new video taken by a neighbor just minutes after police say one of the cars slammed into a light pole at hillsdale and meridian avenue. both drivers left the scene. tonight friends of the victim gathered to light candles and reflect on their loss. >> he was smart. he had a lot going for him. i mean, he could have been a mechanic, an engineer. >> two other teenagers went to the hospital with serious injuries. police say alcohol was a factor in the crash. new at 11:00 a man is dead in san jose after a crash between a car and an suv. it happened just after 7:00 tonight on leeward drive and ocola avenue. the victim was a passenger in one of the vehicles. one adult and five children went to the hospital.

firefighters had to pull one of them out of the wreckage. the survivors are expected to be okay. police tried to stop a stolen car late this afternoon in san francisco but the driver took off and crashed. the car side swiped another car and hit a parking meter at 7th and brannone street. police arrested one person. investigators say there was a brief chase but police called it off when the driver started speeding and driving the wrong way down a one-way street. the post office is trying to track down a group of male thieves in san jose. take a look at them in action. staff at the apartments provided abc 7 news with this video saying they want the thieves captured. but they say police won't investigate. a postal inspector is currently working on thes case. the complex said mail from four or five mailboxes was stolen. still to come on abc 7 news at 11:00, hail may be in the bay area, but it's heavy snow across much of the nation. the blast of winter that is

outside the san francisco federal building, several young men were dressed in orange overalls, a show of solidarity for the 21 coptic christians who were brutally killed by isis in libya. and the flag of the syrian people was flagged for the hundreds of syrian christians kidnapped this week by isis. >> isis' videos have tormented us. >> reporter: this group is made up of eastern christian denominations. all of them say their religious families and history is under attack by isis in the middle east. >> it's a group that has been there since the birth of christianity. they are fiercely endangered. >> reporter: there is a combined sense of anguish over this week's kidnappings, and the destruction of priceless syrian artifacts at a museum in mosul, iraq. items that had survived for thousands of years. >> the persians the het oh

tights the babylonians you name it these -- it lasted. here you are, you've got a bunch of animals with sledge hammers with saws, cutting it down. >> reporter: he's a board member of a syrian church in san jose. they held a prayer vigil last night for those who have been kidnapped. now they're hoping some of those prayers have been answered. cnn is reporting that 23 of the hundreds taken by isis may have been released in syria. abc 7 news. abc 7 news was there when san francisco firefighters rescued a man and his dog off a cliff. it happened this afternoon. frank stark said he was walking his dog when the dog fell off the cliff. he immediately ran to the edge, and he says the ground sunk underneath him and he fell as well. firefighters used ropes to pull frank and his dog up. both dog and owner are okay.

dozens of people gathered in downtown redwood city today to celebrate the chinese lunar new year. traditional chinese art music and martial arts filled the courthouse square. and bs 7 news anchor kristen emceed the event which featured a lion dance kung fu and tai chi performances, and panda acrobats and lots of arts and crafts for the kids. luckily they got that done before the weird weather hit. we'll send it over to drew for more. >> weird weather, yes. where you saw the downpours, they came down in buckets at times. live doppler 7 hd all quieted down. the action has moved offshore. a live from the tower cam downtown san francisco. in terms of rainfall totals from this system san leandro coming in with more than a half of an inch of rain.

they found the baby near the sacramento river on wednesday. they believe he died from either hypothermia or drowning. a wintry mix coated part of san jose this afternoon. the meadowlands neighborhood in the south part of the city saw hail, as did other cities across the bay area. in san francisco, lots of you saw lightning in the sky. a viewer sent this picture of a strike over the mission district this afternoon. another massive winter storm is barreling straight through the hearts of the nation tonight. the storm causing problems for travelers, both on the road for drivers like these in texas, and in the air. abc news reporter tom has the details. >> reporter: snow and ice taking their toll across thousands of miles. in raleigh north carolina, it was black ice reducing these cars to roadside wrecks. and mounds of mashed metal. in springfield missouri this accident sent emergency crews racing to highway 60 on i-44 a chain reaction sent this pickup

face-first through a melt guardrail. in wichita, this suv struggles after sliding off the interstate. at dallas-ft. worth slush and ice forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights. this storm system turned a flight into a nine-hour no-go that had passengers raiding the liquor cart. >> i'm not flying american again. >> reporter: in new england the snow continues to crush rooftops sending them tumbling down. a youth hockey team escaped disaster this morning. >> it blew us backwards. >> very scary. >> reporter: florida wasn't spared. slow-moving thunderstorms dumped torrential rains. this car was stuck in a manhole when the cover floated away and the mail in this truck won't reach a mailbox anytime soon. the forecast shows more snow moving across ohio and pennsylvania, and into the northeast by monday. as the series of storm systems stretches more than 3,000 miles,

from california to maine. abc news, new york. more than a dozen flights were affected right here in the bay area. sfo had 16 cancellations this morning. but no delays at this hour. san jose had one flight canceled this morning. one flight delayed out of oakland. the southwest is expecting more record snowfall overnight which could affect more flights tomorrow. the joint project is trying to make flying safer. australia, indonesia and malaysia are leading the way to keep better tabs on airliners flying over remote ocean areas. they'll use new methods to keep in contact with flights about every 15 minutes, instead of 30 or 40 minutes. the announcement comes as we near the anniversary of malaysia airlines flight 370 the plane disappeared a year ago next week. developing now at disneyland investigators believe fireworks are blamed for starting a small fire just after 9:00 in the backstage area next

to the it's a small world attraction. the fire is now out and no one was hurt. the attraction was not damaged. disney is the parent company of abc 7 news. new jersey governor chris christie told california republicans today the party should not choose a 2016 presidential nominee because of pressure from pollsters, pundits and donors. christie was speaking at a luncheon during this weekend's gop convention in sacramento. he is in california raising money for his political action committee. the governor has struggled to lock up donors amade a field of presidential candidates. prince william is closing out his first visit to japan. the royal is using his influence to refocus the world's attention on the country's ongoing struggle in the fukushima nuclear meltdown zone. william melt with children affected by the tsunami which ripped through their towns and villages four years ago. they are just now able to go outside and play since radiation levels are down.

every day women in afghanistan risk their lives for their jobs. cheryl jennings traveled to afghanistan recently, and met exclusively with the newly elected president. >> this is a place where people deeply believe in education and learning, and engaging. and they need to be given an opportunity. >> reporter: the newly elected president of afghanistan told me that opportunity begins with a love for the land.

>> the majority of the people are engaged with agriculture. that's where we need to focus, to change the life of the majority. >> reporter: he's impressed with the agricultural programs by heidi and gary kuhn. their funding comes from u.s. aid, the u.s. agency for international development. the bay area nonprofit is helping farmers improve their crops to help internationally, and teaching women to become farmers. they work in a building surrounded by security guards armed with machine guns. when heidi visits she wears body armor because she's a target from radicals who don't like westerners or women working outside the home. why do you do this? you don't have to be here in this war zone to manage your business. >> we take our business very seriously, cheryl. i'm so fortunate to have four children. i look into the eyes of my own children and grandchild and i think how fortunate they are to grow up in california, to live truly in peace. >> reporter: some of the women

came to the heavily guarded hotel where we were staying. they affectionately call her heidi mama. they tell me they take a risk daily going to and from work because of attacks by the taliban. >> i come to the office every day. it's really hard for me to say bye to my kids, because i can't believe that at the end of the day i will be able to go home alive. so every day i say to my husband, good-bye. if i can't see you i'll see you in heaven. >> reporter: they work mostly with widows. there are an estimated 1 million in afghanistan. many cannot read have no job skills, and have up to four children to support. this project is tough for them but has a potential for a higher profit so they grow high-quality grapes. >> the women can also do this. the quality will be good.

they will be in the market for a good price. it's good for them. >> reporter: ghani said what afghans want is very simple. >> more than anything else, i think we have the human resources that want to live ordinary lives. >> reporter: it will take some time for afghans to be able to lead ordinary lives. until then, these courageous women want to keep working, because they're inspied by heidi kuhn and know they are helping their country. >> the heidi mama. heidi, she's so brave. she's so strong. her staff is so brave and strong. we learn from her. >> reporter: cheryl jennings, abc 7 news. teenagers from all over the bay area are coming together to help out in the communities where you live. they put together small hi jean kits for project homeless connect. 800 young members of the church
