the first ingredient in every general mills big g cereal. and why we never use high fructose corn syrup. general mills. look for the big g. it means goodness first. . >> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, march 1st. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning. look at live doppler hd from yesterday to this morning things have really quieted down. some light snow? the sierra nevada and 31 degrees. all the action is in southern california where it's raining around palm springs and san diego. today we are left with plenty of sunshine. here's san jose. number are beginning to come up with low 50ths in the city, 55 half moon bay. in the north bay it's been cool with temperatures in the 30s.

uv low 40s around the bay right now. for the afternoon temperatures will be seasonal. upper 50s to low 60s for san francisco. low to mid-60s around the rest of the bay. another weather system heads our way, but will it bring us rain? stay tuned, i have the answers coming up. >> thank you. some breaking news into our newsroom right now. the san francisco fire department is on the scene of a major water leak. they are calling it major. it's at san jose and randall. part of the roadway and muni tracks are flooded. we will have details later on. break news out of hayward this morning where police are look for a man who allegedly shot at an officer. it happened around 2:00 in the area. police say they are still searching for the suspect. a residents are being asked to shelter in place. the officer who was shot at was not injured and returned fire. no word yet if the suspect was

hit by a bullet. the weekend weather has been rather odd. families in south san jose could not believe their eyes when they looked out their windows yesterday. they saw what appeared to be snow. just a few neighborhoods were hit with the unusual wintry mix. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson has the story now from the south bay. >> toto, i don't think we are in san jose anymore. the meadowlands look like a neighborhood from the midwest. i said what happened? it's a miracle. video from steve baker shows the hail. at one point he joked about the need for a snowplow. these kids focused on the no -- no balls, or should we call them hail balls instead? >> have you ever seen this before here? >> no. my hands are frozen right now. usually we have to go up in the mountains to find snow and now we just need to go in our front yard. >> the sidewalk snowball fight is certainly a first for this

nine-year-old, but it's not the first for the neighborhood. >> it's probably been maybe 20 years since it last snowed. it's been a very long time. >> they loved seeing their car covered and backyard saturated. >> we aren't afraid of a little bit of snow. just a little up the wards family swarmed around a white lawn. some drove over from a few miles away. >> we got in the car. we said we are two minutes away, let's get down here and let the kids play. >> father and son snapped selfies by the snowman and more than a few drivers attempted to take on the souvenir. we will so what the police say about frosty's lack of seatbelt. >> it's a lot of fun. >> they said it's a memory they won't soon forget. >> it's fantastic. we are all having fun. >> in south san jose, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> people are posting lots of pictures on social media. robin took this picture near the evergreen neighborhood in san jose. and john took these photos of the hail in that city. you see how thick it looked coming down.

they have received 16 inches of snow since friday afternoon. you can see what is showing up on live doppler 7hd anytime with the abc7 weather app. it's free on apple's app store or google play. we also have more information at abc7news.com/apps. there's a growing memorial in san jose created by friends of a teenager killed in a car crash early yesterday morning. investigators believe two cars may have been racing at the time. this is video taken by a neighbor just minutes after police say one of the cars crashed into a light pole at hillsdale and meridian avenue. both drivers left the scene. last night friends of the victim, a passenger in the car gathered to light candles and reflect on their loss. >> he was smart. he had a lot going for him. he could have been a mechanic, an engineer. >> two other teenagers went to the hospital with serious

injuries. police say alcohol was a factor in the crash. also in san jose, a man is -- a woman is dead after a crash between a car and an s.u.v. it happened just after 7:00 last night on leeward drive and north of the reed-hill port airport. the victim was a passenger in one of the vehicles. one adult and five children went to the hospital. firefighters had to pull one of them out of the wreckage. the survivors are expected to be okay. this morning a gilroy man is recovering from major injuries after falling off a cliff and into the ocean in the north bay. you are looking at new video released this morning by the chp. police say a 24-year-old man was hiking with a church group near arch rock when he fell around 4:15 yesterday afternoon. plunging around 60 feet, hitting

the rocks before and then falling into the surf. he was able to pull himself back on to the rocks and a chp helicopter was brought in to hoist him up. the man was taken to the hospital with major injuries but police say he is expected to survive. abc7 news was there when san francisco firefighters rescued a man and his dog off a cliff. it happened yesterday afternoon. frank starks said he was walking his dog when the dog fell off the cliff and starks immediately ran over to the edge. he said the ground gave way and he fell down, as well. firefighters used ropes to full -- pull starks and his dog up. both are okay. today amtrak is opening its new ticket office after closing its old location at the san francisco ferry building last night. the ticket office and bus stop have been relocated to the temporary transbay terminal at folsom and beil streets, about a

half-mile south of the ferry building location. amtrak will share the space with greyhound. starting today people with disabilities can ride muni for free. in january the san francisco mta board unanimously agreed on funding for the free rides. the program is available on clipper cards only. officials say over the past month alone they processed more than 38,000 applications for the free muni program expansion. last year the mta approved a two-year free ride program for low income young people. still ahead. two astronauts are in the middle of a nearly 7 hour spacewalk. why they are working outside the international space station for the third time in a week. and why a dallas nurse who contracted the ebola virus said she's firing a lawsuit against the hospital.

data lines that will be needed for future america crew capsules. n.a.s.a. is paying boeing and space x nearly $7 billion to develop a spacecraft capable of transporting astronauts to the space station. that is really something else right there. the first flight is targeted for 2017. a dallas nurse who contracted the ebola virus while caring for an infected patient said she plans to file a lawsuit against the hospital where she contracted the illness. according to the news, she plans to file her lawsuit tomorrow against texas health presbyterian hospital. the 26-year-old said she has nightmares, body aches and insomnia as a result of contracting the disease from the man who died from the illness. she said the hospital and their parent company failed her when she cared for duncan.

happening today, a 5k walk in san ramon to raise awareness about prescription drug abuse. abc7 news anchor cheryl jennings will m.c. the event. participants will carry photos of those who have died from prescription drug-related causes. there will also be a health expo and a drug take-back event where police will be on hand to manage the save disposal of unwanted medications. march is prescription drug abuse awareness month. that 5k walk stars in just a couple of minutes at 9:20. it's at iron horse middle school. they don't have to worry about the weather. >> no. good thing that's today. they are still looking at chilly conclusionings and snow here. this is heavenly. this is about 8000 feet. at the tahoe valley airport some snow and 31. they are happy about this. a few more inches to come. any more rain in our forecast? there is a chance.

>> major league baseball's first black player in chicago, minnie minoso, has died. this morning the chicago white house tweeted this photo of minoso with a message that reads in part "fierce tears are sadness are falling for a great man minnow so described as the first major black latino stayed made his debut with cleveland in 1949 and was dealt to chicago in a three-team trade two years later. he made his white sox debut may 1, 1951. the team retired his number back in 1983. he was 92 years old.

cruz yesterday .2 of shower activity. even upwards of .75-inch in carmel. 53 san francisco. you didn't see anything. oakland saw a little bit of rain. 49 in san jose where all the activity seemed to be yesterday and through morgan hill. mt. tam, boy temperatures have climbed about 10 to 12 degrees since this morning's mid-30s. 51 in fairfield. 50 livermore and 53 in concord. from our sutro tower camera, this is it around much of the bay today. plenty of sunshine. some partly cloudy skies down around the south bay, but overall we are talking about seasonal day today. more clouds tomorrow with a chance of isolated shower. this system will not be moving right over the state. it's going to parallel the coastline and that's going to decrease our chance of showers. dry and warm weather continues through much of march. the first week anyway. there's the low. you can pick it out.

circulation is slowly skirting to the south and east. next system will slide to the south quickly tomorrow. so as we go through that several hours you will notice nothing but in the way of sunshine today. tomorrow morning 10:00 notice more high and mid-level clouds then a few pop-up showers in the higher elevations throughout the afternoon. we will see some of those build-ups and maybe an isolated shower. overall the chances are slim, about 20% for seeing rain tomorrow. 52 today in the southern sierra. los angeles scattered showers, low 60s. mid-60s in sacramento and in the 30s in the sierra nevada. temperatures today will be in the narrow range from the low 50s coastside and about 62 around the bay for fremont palo alto. oakland 64. san jose warms to 64 and 66 up in santa rosa. accuweather seven-day forecast cooler with the clouds tomorrow. maybe an isolated sprinkle. then a slow warmup tuesday and wednesday. then spring really comes on thursday, friday and saturday.
