an east bay family still reeling from tragic loss of their teenage daughter a year ago after she was hit and killed by a train. tonight they're honoring her memory by helping others. hello everyone, i'm katie marzullo. jenna betty was 14 years olden when she was hit and exiled bay train a year ago. he family has found a way to deal with their grief and turn their loss into hope for others. cornell bernard is live in martinez with the story. >> reporter: the memorial to jenna betty still stands here in merchandize, not far from the

train tracks where she died a year ago. it's been a tough anniversary for her family but they are choosing to celebrate her life by helping others in need. >> seems like just yesterday, like i was just hanging out with her and we were having fun. >> main da will never forget the girl with the big heart and bright smile. it seems jenna betty has a way of bringing out the best in everyone. >> even if you're feeling down you can text jenna and she will make you laugh. >> reporter: the popular eighth grader at martinez junior high was struck and killed a year ago by a freight train. police say she ran back to pick up the cell phone she dropped on the tracks. >> honestly, i feel like she walks with us every day. >> reporter: her mom has somehow managed to channel her grief into something positive starting with a hash tag, her smile. >> an idea of starting a nonprofit was born and i knew i wanted to help people who were in a similar situation that our family was going through.

>> reporter: her smile.org has already helped eight families with financial and emotional support, and on monday, the jenna betty memorial golf tournament will be held at franklin canyon golf course in hercules. they expect to raise $10,000. >> we should all remember jenna not for how she died or that she died but for how happy she always was and who she was. >> her death hazard brought greater awareness about safety. >> a lot of the kids never good on the train tracks anymore. >> reporter: a teen with that amazing smile would whose 0 life now brings hope and strength to others. in martinez, abc7 news. >> oakland's police chief is calling the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy senseless. officers say devon ellis was walking with friends on brookdale avenue when he was shot and killed last night. no one else was hurt. ellis was a freshman at oakland technical high school. police and crimestopperss are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an

arrest. officer does not have a motive for the shooting and no suspects have been identified. new details now in murder of a woman? sonoma county. investigators believe they found three people responsible for the death of olga dinelli. she was found dead inside her penngrove home on thursday. the sheriff's office says a suspect was shot and killed by officers just across the arizona border. two others were arrested. it began with a pursuit yesterday in indeo in riverside county. an officer say two suspects were firing at other drivers as they drove across the state line. spike strips respond the vehicle and deputies say they opened fire when a woman got out of the car armed with a gun. man surrendered and police arrested a third suspect in richmond. a police standoff that put an east bay neighborhood on lockdown for 12 hours, ended with a dramatic arrest. around 2:00 p.m., s.w.a.t. teams surrounded a house in hayward as what appeared to be gas or smoke powder from the windows. minutes later officers escorted a man in handcuffs away from the

scene. it gap at 2:00 a.m. when police sale the suspect shot sat an officer during a traffic stop near wynton avenue. the officer was not hurt. police say the suspect was driving a car that could be connected with a shooting last night. a suspect driving a stolen car created quite the mess in san francisco's tenderloin district this morning. police were responding to a reported car burglary at post and market street when the suspect took off in a stolen vehicle. officers say he didn't get very far, crashing into another vehicle and a pole. near jones street, just three blocks away. he then got out of the car and tried to run. >> the officers did an outstanding job in pursuing the suspect on foot. suspect went into a building where he was taken into custody. >> police have not released the suspect's name. officer says the woman in the car he crashed in into was shaken up but not hurt. happening now. a massive water leak today in san francisco has submerged a

busy street. it happened just before 9:00 this morning the area of san jose avenue and randall street, near glen park. all southbound lanes of san jose avenue remain shut down right now. you can see some muni tracks are underwater. the j line was affected and muni used shuttle buses for passengers. j line service was restored just before noon. the source of the leak has been traced to a water substation in the mission district. no word yet on what caused the leak. as crews continue to work on repairs. minimum wage workers in oakland are getting a raise starting tomorrow. the current $9 an hour minimum wage will increase nearly 36% tomorrow to $12.25 an hour. the highest minimum wage in the bay area. while workers applaud the move some businesses and restaurants say the increase will force them to raise prices. hire fewer workers or give employees fewer hours. some restaurants will switch to a 20% service charge in lieu of a tip, with part of the fee

going toward the restaurant's revenue. it's already being tested by some restaurants in the uptown and rockridge districts. oakland votes approved the wage increase last november. coast to coast, mother nature is battering the country, floods in the west delays in the air and ice and snow heading east. slick roads sent drivers sliding in several states. take a look. the driver of one suv in st. louis lost control. no serious injuries reported there, though. the suv came to rest in a ditch. abc news reporter gloria riviera is in dallas-fort worth with the latest on the treacherous weather. >> it is mind boggling. >> won't get out today. >> whether you fly or drive travel is quickly becoming a national nightmare. thousands of flights to impacted delayed or cancelled altogether. >> if you have one son where? >> in mexico. waiting for the family. we can't get there. >> in dallas stranded travelers are doing whatever they can to get comfortable. some with cots others on the

our first view of butch will more as he makes his way outside of the hatch. >> new video tonight as two american astronauts on the international space station complete their third space walk in just over a week. they installed antennas and 400 feet of cable that will one day allow commercial spacecraft to dock at the iss. for the second time one of them reported water in his helmet when he re-entered the space station but it was a small amount and was not considered dangerous. after that happened on the last space walk, engineers concluded it was the result of condensation. beginning today, senior citizens and people with disabilities can ride muni for free. the san francisco mta board unanimously approved the free

rides for many low or moderate income passengers in january. the program is available -- on clipper card only. the mta has processed more than 38,000 applications for the expansion in just the past month. new applications may take up to four weeks to process before seniors or the disabled can begin riding for free. a traffic alert tonight from caltrans. a section of highway 4 in east contra costa county will be closed overnight in both directions. a stretch of the highway near hillcrest avenue will be closed monday through friday. westbound lanes well be shut down from 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. eastbound lanes from 11:59:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. during those times construction crews will be working on widening the highway. there's no question we are nation that loves dogs. but what breed is america's top dog? there are changes on the latest list of most popular pooches. we have a look up next. a look live outside for you.

yesterday, still bring wet weather into southern california at this hour. as this system departs overnight tonight, our focus then turns to another quick moving system, diving out of canada at this hour. notice on live doppler 7hd some showers beginning to form around seattle, and once again this systemming is going to be a quick-moving system and a moisture-starved system. monday morning 7:00, lots of clouds in the sky but we'll be on the dry side. the popup showers start to look to begin in the mid-morning hours. by 10:00, peeks of green here and there, and by the afternoon the possibility of showers does continue but at the sun goes down, the showers will diminish and the system is of it here monday evening and that opens the door to warmth. look at san jose average high 64. mid-week and into the weekend, look at temperatures, some ten degrees above normal. going to the 70s from thursday friday saturday and
