preserved and turned over all e-mails required by law but raises questions about security and transparency. >> reporter: it sure does and will also likely become a big issue in the upcoming presidential campaign. this morning hillary clinton is in the hot seat after bombshell revelations first reported by "the new york times" overnight. "the times" reports clinton exclusively used a personal e-mail account to conduct government business as secretary of state noting she didn't even have a government e-mail address during her four-year tenure. the state department confirms this is true. >> it is very unusual for a high-level official to solely use a private e-mail account to transact government business. >> i, hillary rodham clinton -- >> reporter: that raises serious issues. for one, federal law requires that all official communications including e-mail must be

preserved by the government to allow future access for historians, journalists and for congress. "the times" reports the e-mails first came to light as a result of a special congressional committee investigating the 2012 attack on the consulate in benghazi. overnight the state department told abc news clinton did hand over tens of thousands of e-mails at their request late last year but the times reports clinton's advisers reviewed those first picking and choosing which ones to send and legality isn't the only issue. there's also security. was clinton's private e-mail account encrypted against possible security breaches? overnight jeb bush tweeted "transparency matters. unclassified hillary clinton e-mails should be released." in response to "the times" story a clinton spokesperson said she abided by both the letter and spirit of the law and, george, while her e-mails were not preserved at the time by the government, the spokesperson

said that mrs. clinton preserved her own e-mails and when asked years after she left the state department she did turn over those e-mails. >> also in washington, jon, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu speaking to congress and that showdown with president obama and ahead of that both the president and the prime minister trying to say, hey, this is not personal, the relationship is strong, we just disagree over the iran nuclear deal. >> reporter: this has gotten real hot so both sides are trying to turn the temperature down saying, look, israel and the united states remain the closest of allies but, there is a huge fundamental disagreement between netanyahu and the president obama on that issue. winter storm, yes, another one bringing blizzard conditions to the middle of the country and more snow heading to the east. abc's alex perez has much more on all of that. >> reporter: this morning, whipping winds and falling snow are starting to make for a miserable morning commute.

blizzard warnings have been issued for parts of minnesota where they could see up to 5 inches of snow today. in boston harbor -- >> coast guard called 911. >> reporter: a 65-foot coast guard boat got stuck clearing frozen channels. the coast guard had to call the state police for help. a dive team arriving and jumping to the 29-degree water able to free the tug from the chains. boston with 8 1/2 feet of snow already on the ground this winter, they're just a few inches shy of a record. in rehoboth, massachusetts, a grateful horse owner. after the roof of this large barn gave way under the weight of the snow trapping her horse and nine others in the debris. >> it's not just a horse, he's my best friend. >> reporter: in indiana watch as rescuers use axes and a chain saw to break ice and pull this horse from a frozen pond he had fallen through. and get ready, parts of the

storm will make for a messy commute throughout the day here in minneapolis, down in chicago all the way to the mid-atlantic. robin. >> all right, alex, thank you. that snow and cold weather is moving east right now. ginger, pretty much the entire country is affected. >> so many people. you see the winter weather advisories and blizzard warnings from utah to maine but wanted to include this. this is southern california, hail covering the beach. people thought it was snow. this is not snow. it comes along with thunderstorms but still just an epic image. you don't get to see this every day. look what's happening in chicago this morning. alex mentioned it, a messy commute, indeed, because it was snow earlier. now has transitioned to a mix and will be that way as you make your drive. here's that picture i was talking about all the way from utah and colorado to maine talking about several iterations of this, a little appetizer for new york tonight and the northern great lakes today. and then here comes the main one by thursday morning we're talking a lot of snow and i'll be detailing that coming up. >> okay, ginger, thanks very much. we turn to a new front in the war against isis.

twitter is dropping accounts that spread the propaganda and hearing new audio of jihadi john for the first time. abc's brian ross with it. >> reporter: we're hearing the voice of jihadi john this morning without all the filters and effects that were used in those gruesome isis videos. on the propaganda tapes he is gruff and threatening. >> we'll begin to slaughter your people. >> reporter: and this is what mohammed emwazi sounds like -- speaking normally. >> he starts telling me what do you think of 9/11? i told him this is the wrong thing. >> reporter: in an audiotape of him complaining about what he called threats from the british security services, some six years ago. >> we're going to keep a close on you, mohammed. we have been and we'll keep a close eye on you. >> reporter: authorities say emwazi's mother recognized her son's voice on the first of the jihadi john tapes. >> you have plotted against us. >> reporter: showing the american hostage james foley but she never notified authorities. and this morning, u.s. officials are applauding efforts by

twitter to shut down the very accounts used to distribute those gruesome videos. according to people involved in the operation, twitter in the last week has quietly shut down or suspended at least 2,000 accounts connected to isis, a major escalation. >> i would say this is a serious attack on isis twitter as we've seen so far. >> reporter: also under close scrutiny members of emwazi's family still in london. we spotted his younger brother omar out on the street. >> abc news. >> can we ask just a couple of questions. >> about your brother. >> reporter: but he ran away when abc news tried to ask him about his brother, the isis killer. this morning twitter says it's received a new round of threats against its employees and executives and clearly twitter has hit a raw nerve by attacking isis' access to social media. something they depend on. >> where they've lived. thanks very much. to major new concerns about our safety in the sky. an alarming report says the air

traffic control system is not safe from hackers blaming the faa for failing to protect us from terrorists, criminals and foreign governments. and abc's pierre thomas is in washington with the latest on that. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, robin. as cyberattacks continue to grow, this disturbing new report about our ability to protect planes in the sky from the impact of hacking. a new congressional report states that weaknesses remain threatening the faa's ability to ensure the safe and uninterpreted air system. they say they're aware of the weaknesses, but they've been taking steps to improve security. a dangerous moment for the government and private industry. we've seen hacking of target, sony pictures but also the white house and state department. attacks allegedly done by nations and criminals and authorities worried that one day terrorists might develop the capacity for damaging hacks, as well. george. >> that is a concern, okay, pierre, thanks very much. the latest now on that fatal police shooting of a homeless man in los angeles seeing new

video leading up to that confrontation and kendis gibson has the story. [ gunfire ] >> reporter: millions have uploaded this video of lapd officers shooting and killing a homeless man on skid row leaving police scrambling to respond to a wave of international attention. this morning, newly obtained surveillance video shows the critical moments that happened before the shooting. you can see the man who was later killed by police speaking with officers before jumping into a tent on the sidewalk. guns drawn, police tried to get him to come out and when he does, he starts swinging. officers can be seen knocking him to the ground and the fight continues. an eyewitness on the ground capturing the rest of that dramatic scene. >> get my stick. >> reporter: the lapd insists the shooting was justified. >> while on the ground and struggling with the officers, the man forcibly grabbed one of

the officer's holstered pistols resulting in an officer-involved shooting. >> reporter: they say these screen grabs indicate the suspect tried to grab the officer's weapon. you can hear the officer shouting that his gun is missing. >> i lost my gun. >> reporter: police say the suspect was unaffected when officers deployed a taser gun heard in that video. >> reporter: this morning, the mayor of l.a. vowing to investigate. >> the loss of any life in this town no matter who it is is a tragedy. >> reporter: for "good morning america," kendis gibson, los angeles. >> thanks to kendis for that. to amy with the other top stories starting out with new records in the stock market. >> a surging stock market. good morning to you. wall street enjoying new highs, the nasdaq beginning the day above 5,000 for the first time in 15 years. so what's behind the rally? abc's rebecca jarvis is here with those details. rebecca, good morning. >> reporter: hi, amy, good morning and stocks as you say have gone marty mcfly "back to the future," and the tech heavy nasdaq is partying like it's the

year 2000. the last time it was this high your internet was probably dialup, the ipod, iphone and ipad didn't exist and bill clinton was the president. well, led by companies like apple, google, facebook and microsoft, the nasdaq is now back where it was at the height of the tech boom. the biggest difference between today versus back then, these companies on the nasdaq are actually making real money, apple made nearly $75 billion last year. so where do we go from here? the nasdaq is still below its all-time record high set in march of 2000 and the next most important signal for stocks comes with the jobs report this friday. amy. >> all right, rebecca, thanks so much. also breaking overnight another execution has been postponed because of concerns about a lethal injection drug. kelly gissendaner is the first female to face execution in the state of georgia in 70 years but authorities delayed the

procedure when they found the drug being used pentobarbital has a cloudy appearance, georgia is one of eight states that uses a single drug method. for executions. new details about a daring gold heist. along interstate i-95 in north carolina. police say two armed guards were driving nearly $5 million worth of gold bars from florida to massachusetts when they say engine trouble forced them to stop. well, that's when they say three armed men overpowered them, tied them up and ordered them into the woods before making off with the gold. a $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the gold's return. well, a massive eruption caught on camera in south america overnight after weeks of rumbling, the villarrica volcano in southern chile spewed ash and lava high into the sky and thousands fled as a precaution but told those evacuations were calm and after about 20 minutes, the volcano calmed down again. the last major eruption there was in 1985.

and a new study from stanford university claims the drought in california is being fueled by human caused climate change. nearly all of the state is suffering through the fourth year of extremely dry conditions, but some scientists not involved in the study are questioning some of those findings. and finally, the picture everyone will be talking about today. a british photographer tells us this is legit. he snapped this photo of a baby wiese wiesele hitching a ride on a woodpecker. the bird applies to fly with ease despite the weight on its back and landed a few seconds and they parted ways. some doubt this but fans of "epic" the movie where birds carry superheroes always thought this was possible. that's what it looked like to me. when i saw the picture, it was like "epic." >> a little bit of a turn. >> it must be true then. >> yes. and they probably talk to, right, lara.

we will be sticking around for that. now to a trial that's getting under way in north carolina. a rising young political strategist stabbed to death in her home allegedly killed about i a close friend who was her husband's best man in their wedding. abc's mara schiavocampo is here with that story for us. good morning, mara. >> reporter: robin, good morning. those three were so close they had dinner together every week. now that family friend is facing first degree murder charges and prosecutors say it may have been about money. this morning, a case of politics and alleged betrayal and murder. opening arguments expected to begin this week in the trial of jonathan broyhill, accused of killing his best friend's wife, a rising fund-raising star in the democratic party. >> somebody stabbed her and she's bleeding so badly. >> reporter: 29-year-old jamie hahn was brutally attacked in her raleigh home in 2013. she ran a successful political consulting company working with

former north carolina congressman brad miller. she hired broyhill, her husband's childhood friend and best man at her wedding to do the campaign accounting. >> he was practically like part of the family. that's how much time he spent at their house. >> reporter: but the relationship reportedly soured after the hahns allegedly became aware of financial irregularities, confronting broyhill. >> jamie was part of our campaign. she was one of those who was asking more and more aggressive questions, more and more insistent questions of jon. >> reporter: she was stabbed and a horrifying scene. as heard in the 911 call. >> the person stormed the house and need the help as soon as possible. >> reporter: her husband was injured as he tried to defend his wife. now he sits in court seeking

justice against his former friend. broyhill pleaded not guilty and his client attempted suicide after the attack. >> that goes to state of mind. >> reporter: a point that could be part of the defense's strategy. >> the prosecution has to prove that it was premeditated. what the defense is trying to do is create reasonable doubt that he didn't plan on murder, he planned on killing himself instead. >> opening statements will likely begin tomorrow and the trial is expected to take up to three weeks. we reached out to broyhill's attorney but have not heard back. such a brutal, awful crime. >> it is, thank you. >> thank you. we move on to the gang of bank robbers, the fbi is calling the black hat bandits that struck again yesterday hitting a bank in virginia. their eighth heist but this time may have left behind a key clue and t.j. holmes has the story. >> reporter: faces covered, guns in plain sight. you're looking at two brazen bank robbers accused of eight heists so far and they're

we are back now at 7:41 with the new high-tech way thieves are breaking into cars cracking the codes to those electronic keys which allow them to steal everything inside your car or just take the whole thing and drive away. abc's becky worley has the story. >> reporter: you're watching a high-tech felony. security cameras capturing an alleged thief casing this suv. he taps something against the passenger side door like magic, the doors open. no alarm. he walked away with a suitcase and a $15,000 bike. its owner a professional triathlete believes the bad guy was no amateur. >> the way he went into the car and he got the bike out and, you know, just knew exactly what he was doing. >> reporter: and police agree. >> it is believed he used an unknown type of electronic device or remote to open the car doors. >> reporter: the incident isn't isolated surveillance videos caught thieves all across the

country using mysterious devices to pop locks and open doors. they're spoofing operation so effortless you could easily mistake them for the car's real owners. >> if you use this technology that imitates your key fob, no alarm. get away clean. >> reporter: the lights flash as the doors are wirelessly opened and the thieves roll the whole $65,000 car right out of the driveway. so the key fob is a radio. >> it sends out a signal. >> reporter: but hacking that radio signal is an inexact science that works on some models, some of the time. key fobs transmit a code to your car that unlocks the doors and turns off the alarm. and that code, it changes every time that you press the button. watch as this alleged thief in chicago seems to be walking by parked cars scanning to see if the signal from his device matches any of them. >> mind boggling how quickly and how smart they are.

that raises questions because federal law requires all official communications including e-mails to be saved. clinton's spokesperson says she followed, quote, the letter and spirit of the rules permitting officials to use nongovernment e-mail addresses. well, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu delivers a controversial speech to congress today. the invitation came from republicans who did not inform the white house. netanyahu is expected to urge lawmakers to oppose president obama's negotiations with iran over its nuclear program. more than 40 democrats are boycotting the speech including vice president biden. well, a troubling new report warns the nation's air traffic control system is vulnerable to a cyberattack. congressional investigators say the faa has not done enough to protect its computer networks from hackers. the faa says it's already working to boost security. well, prince william is wrapping up his second full day in china strengthening political ties. he has a full agenda which includes some lighter moments such as meeting the famous paddington bear at a movie premiere.
