this is abc 7 news. >> shattered windows and stolen merchandise. this morning the owner of a high-end audio/video store is adding up the damage from a smash and grab burglary in san francisco. thanks for joining us. i'm sheryl jennings. >> and i'm kristen zee. investigators will be trying to identify those behind this brazen theft. the latest targeting electronics retailers in the bay area. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at the store in the nob hill neighborhood. amy? >> reporter: the owner tell me that the thieves took very expensive equipment. three people broke in here. they worked as a team, and they

went through that store. the entire store very quickly before police could even get here. they shattered the window and stormed in at 4:00 a.m. grabbing speakers and amplifiers, even as the alarm was signaling for help. a witness said it looked like they knew what they were doing. >> i woke up to a crashing, breaking glass noise. ran to my window, saw three men in long overcoats. they had like ski masks. you couldn't see their face. little winter hats on. >> reporter: the owner of music lovers at busch & steiner says this is the second time his store has been hit this month. each one happening at 4:00 in the morning. he's not alone. this is one of at least half a dozen electronics stores in the city and on the peninsula that have been victims of smash and grabs within the last month. >> obviously we're going to try to look at the connection, if there is a connection. if there is no connection, we're obviously going to go in any

direction to apprehend the suspects. >> reporter: while police look for clues they also suggest that the stores try a variety of security measures. >> it would behoove people to get audio/visual surveillance systems in their stores and hopefully that would deter some people. but high-end stores like this, the grates over the windows. >> reporter: the owner of music lovers is considering iron bars but it didn't stop the bad guys on california near polk last week. the thieves just used a truck to break through them. owners are hoping police can catch theelling the equipment, possibly online. the owner saw his inventory on the website audio gone the last time this happened to him. >> we'll be on craigslist ebay, you name it local flea markets, what have you. they're out there. >> reporter: look at this live picture, an evidence team just arrived to process the store to see if the thieves left any trace behind.

the owner tells me he switched to security systems after the first break-in. the new system was ior one day. he says he got notified quicker this time, but it still didn't stop them. reporting live from san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc # news. an elementary school is back open after a lockdown earlier this morning for about a half an hour at 7:45. there was police activity according to a district spokesman, so police asked the school to lock down even though school hadn't started yet. but there were some students on campus and parents were dropping off told, were told to keep their kids with them and move away from the school. police lifted the lockdown at 8:15. the fire at a two-story restaurant broke out at 1:30 this morning. investigators think it may have started in trash in the garage. investigators in vallejo are trying to determine whether squatters are to blame for a fire at a former school

district. it broke out about 10:00 last night at napa street. police say the offices were vacant, but homeless people had been living there. one person suffered smoke inhalation but refused treatment. the justice department is closing the book on the case surrounding teenager michael brown's death. a final report out this morning shows the doj will not charge officer darren wilson in brown's death. it states wilson's actions don't merit prosecution under federal civil rights law. prosecutors didn't find anything to disprove that wilson feared for his safety as he claims in a confrontation with brown. an investigation showed the 18-year-old was not armed when wilson killed him last august. the doj report out today comes just a day after a rapid civil rights investigation into the ferguson police department in missouri as a whole, accusing officers there of a pattern of discrimination against african-americans. the police department is expected to address that report later today. a settlement has been reached for more than 70 passengers who survived the

asiana airlines at san francisco international airport two years ago. the airline and boeing reached a deal with 72 passengers. i'm sorry, those numbers are conflicting here. that's the first settlement since the 2013 crash. flight 214 clipped the sea wall and slammed into the runway. three teenage girls were killed and more than 180 others injured. the deal still needs approval from the court. the san francisco municipal transportation agency has green-lighted a controversial plan to make one of the city's busiest streets safer. mta is taking advantage of a repaving project along a 20-block stretch of polk street from mcailister to union to create wider lanes, bike lanes and mini-parks. it would include taking away some metered parking spaces. there's the controversy. merchants on polk street say it's bad for business because customers parking is already scarce. agency officials say the polk street plan will be evaluated after a year. facebook is getting back to its community. the menlo park based media giant

is doing upgrades for the fire department. $90,000 is being used to buy new thermal imaging cameras. they're going to replace the current fleet which is about six to eight years. the cameras are equipped with a so-called thermal throttle. that allows firefighters to pinpoint hotspots and that will make it easier for them to attack the source of the fire and avoid unnecessary damage to the structure or any other hazard or danger for their crew. a high-profile philanthropist is stepping in to help the bay area man whose prosthetic leg was stolen just as he's training for the 2016 paralympics. 24-year-old ranjit steiner woke up yesterday to find somebody had broken into his new car in san francisco's mission district. the thieves stole the athlete's laptop and something even more valuable, his leg. not only does it cost $30,000 it takes two to three weeks to get a replacement. that's invaluable training time. thankfully hidden cash the

palo alto philanthropist who had been leaving cash for people to find all around the bay area has reached out to abc 7 news after seeing our story. jason buzzy has started a fund-raising campaign to get ranjit a replacement leg. if you want to help, there's a link on our home page. >> i love that. here's another good story, happy ending for three puppies found in the trash back in january. they are now healthy and ready to find homes. >> it was so sad but we're so happy to report this. alyssa harrington is live at east bay animal rescue and refuge in concord. alyssa, people can meet these dogs for the first time today. >> reporter: they can kristen. this is katai one of the dogs available for adoption. right next to him is flacco, he's also ready to find a home. east bay animal rescue and refuge is holding an open house from now until 2:00 where people can meet these dogs and they can drop off applications. now, so far about 20 people have applied, but they say that it's very important to find these dogs the right homes. so you still have a chance and

they will review all of the paperwork before making a decision. now it's hard to believe that back in january, these puppies were found in the trash can. they were just five weeks old at the time. a couple walking their australian shepherd at pleasant hills park found the trio. their dog alerted them to a knotted-up plastic bag by the garbage can. inside, three terrier puppies who officials say would have died if they weren't discovered right in the nick of time. they were taken to east bay animal rescue and refuge and placed with a foster family. president reagan zales says they are healthy and ready for homes. >> already been to the vet got a clean bill of health playing, eating and growing like crazy. everything is going well with them. they have made a full recovery. >> reporter: contra costa animal services is still searching for whoever put the dogs in the trash. if you are interested in meeting them they're at the animal res yew's administrative office in

the boston marathon bombings trial. the attorney for dzhokhar tsarnaev his client admits to playing a role in the bombings. but an attorney says tsarnaev was influenced by his brother to commit the crimes. three people were killed hundreds more were injured when those bombs went off near the boston marathon finish line in 2013. the prosecutor told the jury the goal of the bombers was to kill as many people as possible. tsarnaev could face the death penalty if convicted. youtube executives are considering an overhaul of the site's system for flagging questionable videos. this as we're getting word that ads for some of america's biggest brand names are running

right before that terror group isis's, videos. bounty budweiser secret deodorant, all a few of the products advertised right before jihadi videos posted online. youtube sells ads to companies and those ads are automatically inserted on the side. right now the best line of defense is allowing users to flag videos. but that could change. and at least one advertiser is so upset it's taking action. anheuser-busch released a statement saying, quote, we are working with youtube and our media buying agency, mediacom, to understand and rectify the matter. there's a new twist to the deadly superbug outbreak linked to ucla's medical center. an fda report out today shows the device is believed to have spread the drug-resistant virus never should have been on the market in the first place. 179 patients at ucla's hospital were exposed to the virus after being treated with endough scopes. two died. now the food and drug

administration says olympus had been selling that scope for three years before the agency ever realized it did not have clearance. some in washington are calling for a congressional review as to why it took the fda so long to react. new details this morning in the e-mail controversy involving hillary clinton's time as secretary of state. the associated press reports that computer server that transmitted and received clinton's e-mail has been traced back to an internet service registered to her new york home. using a private account allows clinton to limit access to her message archives. she is widely presumed the front-runner for the 2016 democratic presidential nomination. well a possible candidate for the republican nomination in 2016 is making weighs swaves this morning for comments he made on cnn. ben carson told chris cuomo that being gay is, quote, absolutely a choice. take a lisp. listen. >> do you think they have control over their sexuality? >> absolutely. >> you think being gay is a choice? >> absolutely.

weekend. we're going to set our clocks back -- excuse me ahead an hour. and we're going to keep climbing through to possibly near record highs by sunday and monday. it will be close. today we're about three to five degrees warmer than average with temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 60s. sun will set at about 6:06. looking at san jose, a lot of sunshine. it's also where we have a lot of the tree pollen many of us are suffering from. the pine, the cedar, the oak and the juniper. now, as we look at the temperatures today, along the coast from 62 in bodega bay, santa cruz at 65. san francisco, 66. and everybody else pretty much 67 to 68 degrees until you get to cloverdale at 70. tonight, there you go. it's going to be a cool one. especially up around santa rosa napa and our inland east bay valleys like san ramon. upper 30s. everybody else in the low to mid-40s. same thing for fremont palo alto southward through the santa clara valley. half moon bay 40 tonight.

mid to upper 40s for oakland, san mateo, richmond and san rafael rafael. you can see the high pressure dominating our forecast. sending the jet stream well up to the north. we're going to have a high start to develop over land over the next 24 hours. and that's why we're seeing a little bit of an offshore breeze right now in the next 24 to 48 hours. and that will help some of this warmth reach the coast. and it will also keep any storms away from tahoe. look at this. average today, 47 degrees. but we jump into the mid to upper 50s thursday and friday. then all that snow we received last weekend, a lot of it may be melting saturday, sunday monday and tuesday with lows in the mid-30s and highs in the low to mid-60s. here's a look at next tuesday and into wednesday. we're hoping a couple of chances of rain will come in once this initial wave moves through wednesday. my accuweather seven-day forecast until then, get used to mid to upper 60s along the coast and low to mid-70s around the

bay and inland starting tomorrow all the way through tuesday. and look at that, not a single chance of rain until possibly we get into the middle and latter parts of next week. hope you have a good day. back to you. >> mike, thank you so much. well a very destructive insect that takes the water out of plants was discovered in a north bay nursery. workers found this sharpshooter during a routine inspection of a shipment of plants in marin. the species can destroy a wide variety of plants and spreads lethal diseases to crops including almonds and grapes. officials sent the insect off to be examined and the shipment back to ventura county. they say they have not detected another sharpshooter in the north bay at this point. there's a new fashion trend sweeping gym as cross america loud patterned tights. >> fitness fanatics cannot get enough of these so-called crazy pants. those look like back in the '70s don't they? trainer to the stars anna kaiser says she rarely sees black yoga pants in her classes anymore.
