rush hour traffic. it's backing up all the way to the maze. it also appears to be clogging up some of the surface streets down below us and around this junction which is not far from children's hospital. it appears the chp and oakland police are just trying to figure out this whole thing themselves. you're looking live now at shots of the area. as you can tell, both lanes of eastbound 580 are closed. one lane is open and cars are creeping by this scene very slowly. as i mentioned the chp and oakland pd are trying to figure this out themselves. we will try to bring that to you as soon as we figure it out too. i am alan wang, reporting live in oakland, abc 7 news. >> alan, thank you. another look at the traffic. what a mess. the maze is usually very heavy and this is impacting it even more this afternoon, creating ripples of traffic all throughout any connecting areas to that 980, 580 area. here's a look at live drive time

traffic. you see all the red in the area. that means it's slow going for anybody on 580. 880 is an alternate for some commuters. but you can expect that will be very slow as well as everybody tries to figure out a way to get home. developing news overseas. the u.s. ambassador in south korea, a stanford graduate was taken to the hospital after a man attacked him with a razor. mark lip ert was giving a lecture when he was slashed. south korean media reports a man shouted no to war training and then attacked the man. currently u.s. and south korea are conducting joint military exercises. he graduated from stanford where he studied political science. he also got his masters degree there in international policies. he worked for senator dianne feinstein prior to 1999. a rare medical procedure about to take place at a bay area hospital. a marathon multiple kidney swap.

this unusual donation chain involves 12 people. six sets of donors and recipients. it's never been done before at california pacific medical center. news reporter lyanne melendez joins us to walk us through the process. >> cheryl, this kind of exchange involving mothers and daughters sisters and brothers is being done more and more and it's getting people off that waiting list. now the national kidney foundation reports that there are more than 100,000 people in the united states waiting for a kidney and 12 people die each day waiting for that transplant. >> thanks to this woman, six patients will receive a kidney in next two days. of course she has one to give. >> i thought i would help one person who i don't know. but the fact that so many people can have life extension, that's pretty big. >> here's how it will work. broussard will start the chain

of events. she donates a kidney to a man whose relative was willing to donate her kidney but was not compatible. so err kidney goes to someone else who has a relative willing to donate to someone else. that kind of pairing continues down the line four more times. relatives of people on the donor waiting list giving so others can start living a more normal life. >> in this grouping that we have, we found compatible donors for each of the recipients by trading kidneys around. >> this kidney exchange is achieved thanks to a software called match grid developed by david jacobs. himself a 2003 kidney recipient. he uses a very sophisticated program to find a genetic profile and finds potential matches. >> we can give them real time results that you can play what ifs and check out all the possible combinations. >> six patients will undergo

surgery tomorrow simultaneously in adjacent rooms. the remaining six will have their procedures done on friday. these operations are done back-to-back to avoid any medical problems or unforeseen circumstances. >> that is the main reason that we don't spread these out over much time. we want to get them all done so that nobody has a chance to get cold feet. >> following the operations, broussard and the others involved in the kidney exchange will have a chance to finally meet. >> i'm in good hands. with this medical team that i trust entirely. >> in san francisco lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. this amazing chain of events was set in motion by one donor. you can become a donor. we have a link at abc 7 news.com. long time supervisor, glover is waiting for a heart and kidney transplant.

he checked himself into ucsf. tests reveal he needs the dual transplant and he's eligible. a donor could come at any time. he will have to miss some meetings but plans to telecommute to work. san jose police have arrested a man they say is a very busily burglar. he and three teenagers are linked to at least seven home burglaries in san jose and one in sunnyvale. the crimes happened over the last year and a half. the alleged crime spree unraffled when residents spotted the gang near olive branch lane in east van jose. cortez is held on bail with $350,000. authorities arrested a suspected sailboat burglar today. police say went up and down the oakland estuary breaking into boats and businesses. they spotted the man using two stolen motors to power his vessel. officers say the man would anchor his boat off shore and use it to get to and from his targets. they found other items on the

boat they believe are stolen. investigators are looking at surveillance video to identify who might be behind the latest smash and grab of high-end audio stores. this one on pine is the third one in the past couple of weeks. the other two based on -- harmony audio video in san francisco's west portal district february 22nd. abc 7 news reporter amy hol enfield has the details on the brazen break-ins. >> they shattered the window and stormed in at 4:00 a.m. grabbing speakers and amplifiers even as the alarm was sounding. witnesses say it looked like they knew what they were doing. >> i woke up to a crashing breaking glass noise. ran to my window saw three men and long overcoats and had like ski masks there. you couldn't see their face. little winter hats on. >> the owner of music lovers at bush and steiner says this is

the second time his store has been hit this month. each one at 4:00 in the morning. he's not alone. this is one of at least half a dozen electronics stores in the city and on the peninsula that have been victims of smash and grabs within the last month. >> we'll try to look at the connection, if there is one. if there is no connection we're going to go in any direction to apprehend the suspects. >> while police look for clues, they also suggest that the stores try a variety of security measures. >> it would behoove people to get audio visual surveillance in their systems, in their stores and hopefully that would kind of deter some people. high-end stores like this you know, the grates over the windows. >> the owner of music lovers is considering iron bars. but bars didn't stop the bad guys from getting into audio vision on california near polk last week. the thieves used the truck to breakthrough them. owners are hoping police catch the thieves selling the equipment, possibly online. the music lovers owner found his

stolen inventory on the website. >> we'll be on craigslist, e-bay, you name it. we'll be looking local flea markets what have you. they're out there. >> the owner of the store says he switched security systems after the first break in. this one was in place for one day. it notified him quicker but still didn't stop them from sweeping through the store. >> abc 7 news. a federal appeals court upheld sunnyvale's law restricting high capacity gun magazines. judges concluded local officials did not violate the second amendment by trying to reduce gun violence. the nra had argued those restrictions were unconstitutional and undermined gun owners' rights to protect their homes. the city ordinance could lead to criminal prosecution for anybody with a magazine holding more than ten rounds of ammunition. a federal judge has given preliminary approval to a $415 million set ament over alleged

collusion among technology giants. apple and others were accused of conspiring to limit pay and job mobility by agreeing not to post each other's employees from 2005 to 2009. the settlement will fund to tens of thousands of tech workers. e-mails from high tech workers including steve jobs sparked that class action lawsuit. automakers are hoping 2015 will continue to see strong growth in sales of electric vehicles. the momentum is fueled by speculation that apple is working on systems for dash poords and may actually be building its own car as well. abc 7 news reporter david louie joins us to explain why silicon valley technology may be a game changer. >> reporter: silicon valley knows a lot about stretching battery life and navigation systems. it's not a stretch to call the electric cars today jumbo computers on wheels. and expertise that automakers

need. >> they know how disruptive new technology can be. talk that apple might be secretly building an electric car has dominated this week's geneva international motor show. one car maker's ceo told reporters not to ask about apple. >> that's a plus. it's definitely the best technology. let's go with the best that we have and make it a very exciting car. >> the electric vehicles or ev market is still small. out of 16 nall -- it's growing fast. up 27% in 2014. consumers are starting to speak of cars like digital devices. >> i wouldn't be surprised if there's a way to upgrade the software to your car. i know tesla can do that. it wouldn't be surprise me in other models too. >> with the technology advancing so quickly, some might be

concerned about the cars being outdated in two years. will they have to get a new car every couple of years. with that in mind, nine out of ten that he sells are short leases. >> if there's something cheaper or longer range or both in three years, they're not totally married to the car. they still get all of the state and federal incentives by leasing as they would by buying. >> pg and e a few weeks ago unveiled plans to install 25,000 charging stations. that's helping to ease anxiety over limited range of evs. the utility is encouraging employees to buy them. >> we kicked it off three months ago. the initial response has been overwhelming. they've 4had hundreds -- >> pg and e is adding more electric trucks to its fleet. in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. just ahead a super-sized move to repair the golden arches. mcdonald's changes the way it does chicken and may end up

business. today the world's -- collided in san francisco literally. a yellow cab and uber car crashed into each other at a mission district intersection. the cab lost control and smashed into the front gate of the elixir bar. one person was taken to the hospital. police trying to figure out who was responsible for the crash. the bar happened to be closed at the time. firefighters are looking into what sparked a fire at a restaurant in knob hill this morning. it's at sacramento and polk. it's a michelin star italian restaurant. investigators think that fire might have started in some trash in the garage. a super-sized announcement from mcdonald's. the largest restaurant chain will change the way it prepares its most popular menu items. reporter chris nguyen live in santa clara to explain what's going on. hi, chris. >> reporter: hi larry. if you're a fan of the chicken sandwich or anything chicken at

mcdonald's, listen up. changes are coming to how chicken is raised and some say more changes could be coming to how farms operate across america. across the street from this mcdonald's ryan is the loyalist to the chain. >> it's tasty, it's quick and super easy to eat. >> word has been spreading fast that the new policy regarding the chicken. within two years farms that supply mcdonald's usa restaurants will only be allowed to administer antibiotics not used for humans to help keep chickens healthy. >> i bet most people didn't know there was antibiotics in the first place. oh, they're reducing it cool. moving on with my life. i think it's a small matter now. >> jocelyn visits mickey d's on a weekly basis but she took a break saying the announcement doesn't sway her to one side or the other. >> everybody has different -- people consume different foods. i feel with me personally, it wouldn't change much. >> however, that change is welcome news to a consumer group

that stands up to powerful interest. >> they're giving antibiotics daily to animals in food and water to prevent illnesses and promote faster growth. this is unnecessary inappropriate and makes all of us less safe. >> according to them 70% of antibiotics sold are used in livestock and chickens. restaurant owner kevin tang said he's gone to great length to avoid that poultry. >> we cook the chicken fresh every day. that's something a lot of restaurants can't say. >> some people the announcement is meant to bolster sales as they've seen a decline in recent years. others wondering if it's too late. >> i like they're trying to improve their food. for me i do not like eating there. >> american icon simply trying to retain its golden symbol. in san jose, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. a new plan to determine the pristine natural areas isn't sitting well with dog lovers.

protesters marched outside the office was the national park service in down town san francisco. they're upset the agency just adopted a general management plan for the golden gate national recreation area. the demonstrators worry the plan will limit visitors to areas like muir woods and restrict off-leash dogs at fort fun ston. >> in san mateo counties we'll have no place for dogs off leash. they stand to lose a lot of area to have dogs off leash. that's unacceptable. >> the national park service says the management plan provides a broad vision for the recreation area. a final decision is due early next year. china is looking to california for advice on how to deal with climate change. the asia society hosted a forum this morning in san francisco. china taking a big interest in california's climate initiatives. china emits more carbon than any other nation. the country wants to balance environmentalism along with

discovered a world war ii japanese battleship. it was found near the philippines after it was sank more than 70 years ago. it went down by 19 torpedos and 17 bombs. they have been looking for it for years. it's considered one of the world's largest and most technologically advanced of its time. pretty amazing. it had three tourists with three 18-inch guns capable of firing a shell more than 26 miles. more than a thousand people lost their lives. allen says he will make sure that site is treated respectfully. netflix's plan to debut a movie in theaters and online simultaneously not going over well. the movie is called -- it stars idris elba. a great actor. amc and other major theaters are refusing to show the movie. traditionally, films are not released until 90 days after being released in theaters.

netflix wants to show the movie on both platforms to qualify for oscar consideration. most of us have heard that too much salt can lead to heart disease. there may be a healthy side to salt that hasn't been noticed until now. researchers it germany say it may be a way for the bod toy protect itself against bacteria. did a series of studies using mice and human cells and researchers found they go up around an infection site and without salt the bacteria tends to grow. scientists stress the study is still in the early stages. study is in the journal cell metabolism. coming up sometimes a field trip is more than a field trip. coming up -- the day of play that became a way to slip away into science. >> one night. one legacy. join abc 7 and inspiring women like jackie speer soledad o'brien and others at the
