this union hall. this community meeting started with the ruckus demonstration outside by opponents of the development. it turned into a vocal confrontation between them and union labor leaders who want the construction job. >> we live in the community like they do. while we respect the position we would like them to hear our side of it. >> tonight's meeting complete with food and refreshments provided by the host was an attempt to spell out the de tallets -- the details of the 1979 mission. >> we are really clear about the demands we are making. we want 100% of uh ready toable housing. >> there is no one that can do it with the cost of construction and materials. there is just no way. that's why we are here talking about 31% affordable. >> it would replace the walgreens and the burger king at 16th and mission. these are the developer's renderings. it proposes buildings 300 market rate rental units and middle class condos for sale to people making between

$6,000 and $145,000 a year. >> we started at $13.62 an hour. i have been there 17 years and i never made more than $30,000 a year, and none of my co-workers do. our managers don't even make $60,000 a year. >> the presentation was a loud back and forth, demonstrators dominating the conversation. if approved developers hope to begin construction in december. opponents vow not to let that happen. abc7 news. an update on a story you will see only on abc7 news. an east bay family is finally getting help. their son was beaten uncos shoes by a fellow student who returned to school after a brief suspension. the injured boy hasn't been back since and it has been almost a month and a half. katie has the story. >> the parents and grand parents of nathan pleaded with the west contra costa school board. they have been desperate to

get nathan back to the elementary school in san pablo since january but not as long as the boy they say beat him unconscious is still there. >> what happened to my grandson is nothing short of attempted murder and felonious assault. >> i don't need who i need to talk to make sure my son is safe and he can get the education he deserves. >> the 10-year-old boy who sent nathan to the hospital with a severe concussion was only suspended five days and the same boy attacked nathan and received a one-day suspension. after hearing the story they are demanding action. >> every one of us up here had young people go to school here in our schools. they didn't have to go through this. >> the director of community engagement says she will meet with the family at the end of the week. >> talk about their concerns and investigate what is happening and make sure we provide the right supports and programs for their student. >> nathan and his mom couldn't be happier. >> we are elated right now.

this has been such an ordeal for us and for everything my son has had to dwo through. has had to go through. >> i feel really excited. i really want to go back to school. you know how people are homesick sph i am school sick. >> nathan says he can't wait to be back with his friends. abc7 news. >> a shooting lead to a traffic nightmare for east bay commuters. it happened just before 4:00 this afternoon on eastbound 580 near the highway 24 interchange through oakland. abc7 news reporter alan wang joins us live from oakland police headquarters with what happened out there tonight. alan? >> tonight police are searching for two men who could be armed and dangerous. i spoke to a witness who says he saw them running down the interstate shortly after the shooting. at least six bullets pierced the side of the ago raw as it -- acura as it was driving near the highway 24 split in

oakland. a witness said he heard several gunshots around 3:30 from the overpass and mlk way. >> as i looked out the window i saw two cars hit each other and two spun around. >> the chp says the car smashed into the wall. the witness saw two men jump out of the chevy i'm paula which turned out to be a rental car. >> and ran down westbound on the 580. one jumped down the hill and ran down 35th street toward west. >> the driver of the acura was wounded. his passenger was detained at the scene. the chp says a third car was damaged in the wreck, but it was able to drive off. the highway shooting caused a huge rush hour bottleneck that impacted traffic all the way back to the maze. by 7:00 eastbound 580 reopened. opd who was in charge of the investigation denies an on camera interview. alan wang, abc7 news. >> and sky 7hd was over a

major rush hour traffic snarl on westbound interstate 80 in berkeley. around 6:00 a driver the highway patrol was chasing surrendered to officers at gunpoint stoping all traffic in the area. officers stopped him for a carpool violation and then he drove off. he later was stuck in traffic and then he couldn't run anymore. the arrest was a memorable one. >> yeah, it was definitely bizarre. we were doing our felony stop and trying to get him out of the vehicle. he was holding on to an energy drink and smoking. he didn't want to let go. as he put it, he wanted one last drag. >> the driver is from brentwood. he has an outstanding felony warrant for a parole violation. >> in richmond a man is in critical condition after he was shot in the stomach. it happened at chancellor avenue and 20th street. it was just before this happened and another man was shot in the leg a couple blocks away. no word yet if the two shootings are related. >> the 9th u.s. circuit court of appeals said upheld.

the ban on high capacity gun magazines that can hold more than 10 bullets. a three-judge panel unanimously rejected arguments that the ban violated second amendment rights saying sunnyvale's public safety concerns outweigh defense concerns. >> developing news, the u.s. ambassador in south korea, a stanford graduate was taken to hospital after a man attacked him with a razor. mark lipper was giving a lecture in seoul when the man slashed at his face and fans. he shouted "no to war training" and attacked lipper. the u.s. and south korea are conducting joint military exercises. he graduated from stanford where he studied political science and got his master's degree in international policy studies. he worked for senator dianne feinstein prior to 1999. the marin humane society hopes to find homes for nine puppies brought in tuesday by a man claiming he found them
