our breaking news is it a plane crash involving harrison ford. tmz is reporting ford is seriously injured. some others are reporting he's in critical condition after ford crash landed his small plane. this happened a short time ago in venice, california. near l.a. two doctors who happened to be near the golf course rushed over. harrison has flown planes for years and crashed multiple times in the past, but never this seriously. it's unclear if anyone else was on the plane with harrison ford. good afternoon everyone. i'm larry neil.

>> we'll bring you more on harrison ford's plane crash. contra costa college is taking center stage today. >> a relatively small group of students making a big statement. students managed to shut down the uc campus today. >> they rocked both roads into campus early this morning forcing all classes to be cancelled. >> that sent students scam blirng, trying to prepare for finals. abc 7 news reporter chris winn live on campus with today's stand-off. chris? >> good afternoon at this point it's unclear whether the student protesters will be facing any disciplinary action from the university. if you take a look behind me you can see those who remain here blocking this entrance to campus. no word yet on how much longer they'll be protesting. university officials are hopeful that classes will resume

tomorrow. they came before the crack of dawn and held steady throughout the day. student protesters standing firm blocking all entrances to uc santa cruz. >> we're not going to let business as usual continue. as long as these hikes are on the table. >> raising awareness about tuition hikes, policing and what they say is the mismanagement of the uc system. >> the only way this trend is going to be reversed is if students stand up and say they've had enough. >> students and staff cancelling classes and warning the community to stay off campus. >> these kinds of things are disruptive to a lot of people. we have research to conduct, classes to teach. people live on campus and have appointments they need to get to. child care. >> reese morgan is currently on crutches. protesters wouldn't let his friends pick him up. he too had to hike. >> they won't let you throw. which is pretty frustrating. >> east bay resident came to the

university on a sales call not knowing what too expect. >> definitely cut into my day, i won't be able to see as many people as i wanted to. i have to walk 45 minutes to my car. >> buchanan and her ballet flats among the many getting an unexpected workout. the agent for ray mcdonald is shopping him around the nfl. >> his agent reportedly sent a letter to all nfl teams saying mcdonald will not be charged in a sexual assault case in san jose. however, abc 7 news spoke with the santa clara county district attorney who told us, that investigation is still open and there's no decision yet about possible charges. the 49ers released mcdonald in december. the team said it was because of mcdonald's history of poor decisions. >> an employee of a lafayette preschool is under investigation for what police are calling inappropriate conduct with a child. >> parents with kids at the

temple isaiah preschool received notice this week, that police are looking at allegations made against an employee. >> the person is not being named and hasn't been arrested but has been placed on leave. administrators are taking the allegations seriously. and ask that all of you respect the ongoing process and refrain from speculation or unfounded rumors. oakland police arrested 16 people tonight. part of a major effort to reduce gang violence. they say their investigation was designed to put an end to the feuding 65th and 69th avenue village gangs. >> the two groups have been killing each other as well as innocent by standers for years now. a local church leader is happy about the arrest. but today called on the community to do more. >> the innocent people that are dying almost every day now. it has to stop. it has to come to a stop. people who know more than what they're saying, who hear more

than what they're saying. we need to come together. >> oakland police are expected to release the mugshots and the identities of those people arrested later today. only a single runway at new york's laguardia airport is open right now, after a plane individuals into a fence. two of the passengers went to the hospital with minor injuries. in a moment, passengers posted video and photos to social media as they got off the plane. now, this video shows people climbing over the wings the plane's emergency chutes did not deploy. one of those passengers was larry donald. he tweeted this picture here. and the new york fire department posted this photo. this is a view from the water, you see just how close that plane got to the bay. two other pilots landed minutes before this incident. they both reported good breaking conditions. it's not clear what factors may have led to this.

>> i think the pilot did everything he could to slow the aircraft down. the pilots and the co pilots good efforts were reflected in the fact that there were only minor injuries. >> the plane was leaking a gallon of fuel a minute after the crash. that was quickly stopped. >> taking a live look now from our sfo camera. winter storms are affecting bay area travelers. dozens of flights have been cancelled according to flight awareness. a handful at oakland international airport. all three are dealing with various delays because of the weather back east. u.s. ambassador to south korea mark lippert is recovering after a brutal knife attack. >> he studied political science at stanford. he worked for dianne feinstein. he says he's in great spirits despite needing 80 stitches. karen traverse has more on the attack and what may have prompted it.

it was a vicious and violent attack. here's u.s. ambassador to south korea mark lippert just moments after being ambushed by a korean militant. how could a knife wielding man get that close to a top diplomat. the assailant walked right up to lippert armed with a ten inch knife. he was shouting south and north korea should be reunified as he lunged at the ambassador before being wrestled to the ground. >> you have to stop -- >> lippert was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for deep cuts to his face and wrist. he got 80 stitches but is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days. lippert is a close relationship with president obama. he served as an adviser and then

worked at the white house. tensions between north and south korea have increased this week while the united states and south korea conduct annual military exercises. lippert's attacker was ranting as he was taken away by police north korea called the incident a knife attack of justice. and a righteous punishment for war monger united states. >> the ambassador tweeted from the hospital that he was doing well. this incident will cause a very hard look at security around u.s. officials. karen travers abc news washington. >> authorities in washington state are investigating a deadly crash between a school bus and two other vehicles today. >> the vehicles collided on highway 97 near the central washington town killing the bus driver and injuring 43 of the 57 students on board. you can see the entire front of the bus is smashed in. two people in the truck suffered serious injuries. authorityies believe the truck driver may have fallen asleep.

>> another warm dry day across the bay area it's beautiful, we would love to have some rain. >> we are in for some sunshine it seems. spencer christian is here now with our accuweather update. >> we're in for quite a bit of sunshine. here's a live look at doppler 7 hd. sunny excise prevail across the bay area. on the other side of the country as you know a big winter storm has been pounding the coastal areas today. it was about a 1500 mile long line of storms. it's winding down now, still producing snow over the mid-atlantic coast. we have two and a half hour delays, almost three hour delays at philadelphia. newark has two hours jfk about an hour and a quarter. laguardia no delays reported right now. laguardia may still be shut down from this morning's incident. >> this is our first forecast. clear and cold this evening. bright brisk and chilly.

i'll have the complete 7-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you. right now, san jose police are investigating a stabbing. >> police blocking off a street near the school while they search for one or more suspects. so far we know the teen was stabbed at least once near the school. the victim is not a student at independence high, but may have a connection to ace charter school, which is in the same complex. a man convicted of a large scale mortgage fraud scheme has been sentenced. >> allen will spend the next 24 years behind bars. in september, he was convicted of 11 counts of mail fraud and one count of money laundering. 7 on your side's michael finney previously reported. he preyed on more than 1,000 people across california desperate to try to keep their home s homes paying him instead of their banks. a new type of homeless shelter, one unlike anything seen in the city before. >> the mayor toured the facility

this morning was once a school near mission and 16th streets, now it has space for 18 beds. >> the idea is to find people who have been living on the street together and getting them to find help as a group. it has space for them to store their belongings and pets. it's something they can't do at regular shelters. >> you see people with three shopping carts and you look and say, what are you going to do. we're going to be roll those shopping carts right here, we have storage bins where people's property can be maintained. >> homeless people can stay at the shelter for up to 10 days. the council contributed $3 million to get the center up and running. the first graders at alta vista elementary school are doing their part to feed the homeless. they spent the morning making hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with the help of the salvation army. it can get a little messy at times, the kids were excited to be able to help out. especially after reading several books about homelessness and

big changes coming to the greatest show on earth. many are calling it a great victory for animal rights activists. they are phasing out the use of its 43 elephants over the next three years. it was a difficult decision ending a tradition that began more than a century ago. >> it is bittersweet because the elephants have been on the circus for 145 years. this is a real shift in what

will be. it's the best thing for our company, for our associates, and for our consumers and the elephants. >> protests have taken place across the country at arenas holding the circuses including here in the bay area. animal rights activists claim the elephants are mistreated. circus officials deny those accusations. they came to their decision because of growing public concern about how the animals are treated. >> police arrested two people accused of burglary and leading police on a dangerous chase in a stolen car that reached speeds of more than 100 miles an hour. the chase ended when the suspect slammed into another car near 680 and ran away. police tell us the suspect broke into a home in antioch this morning. a witness saw the suspects running through the parking lot of a nearby -- >> i debated whether i should chase them or not, and i feel reluctant that i didn't chase

overnight. mild to warm over the weekend with showers possible next week. let's talk about el nino getting lots of questions about el nino lately. a climate prediction center has issued an el nino advisory a week ago. this is how it looks with the areas of yellow and orange, indicating a little bit of warming. you can see now this week, that area has expanded a bit and temperatures have been rising slightly, thus we have this issue -- weak conditions have developed, there's a 50 to 60% chance of continuing this summer, but it will have no significant impact on the california drug. that's our concern. we would like to have some rain to look like it's going to have any effect. here's our satellite image. what's our next chance of rain? long range beginning next tuesday, march 10th, we will animate the maps here, see clouds coming in wednesday and thursday march 11th and 12th. we have our next chance of rain

but it's hard to tell at this point whether it will be a significant amount of rain. overnight, look for chilly conditions, tonight under clear skies with lows dropping into the mid to upper 30s, santa rosa napa. in some of the inland valleys. we'll see mainly mid-40s in san francisco. tomorrow another sunny and mild afternoon with highs in the south bay. san jose, morgan hill. low to mid-70s as well, san mateo mateo. pacifica and half moon bay in the upper 60s. north bay, 73 at santa rosa, and napa 72. sonoma 72. oakland and san leandro the inland east bay will have highs in the mid-70s from fairfield to concord, president anton and livermore livermore. here's the accuweather 7-day forecast. right through the weekend, monday and tuesday.

no new info from the hospital yet it should be three down and three to go by now. yesterday we told you about a rare six way kidney transplant starting today involving 12 people in san francisco. three of the transplants were scheduled for today. and the other three tomorrow.

that six arrested students are charged with two misdemeanors each resisting arrest and causing a public nuisance. the oakland police department announced the arrest of 16 people in an investigation into gang virus. the oakland mayor told abc 7 news reporter that it brings the city no joy to put young men in prison. it's a necessary step to end gun violence. an unusual lawsuit has been filed against the state of california. three prostitutes and one of the their clients claims their first amendment rights are being violated, they're suing in an attempt to legalize prostitution. abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler joins us live in the newsroom with the story. >> the lawsuit's been filed in u.s. district court here in san francisco. it names state attorney general harris and four bay area district attorneys. >> i've been working as a prostitute for 20 plus years, and i pretty much plan on working as a prostitute for 20 plus more. >> maxine dugan is the force behind what she calls prostitute

its website the afternoon of april 28th. lawyers on both sides will argue whether gay and lesbian couples have a constitutional right to marry everywhere in the u.s. they'll also debate whether states must recognize same sex marriages performed elsewhere. a man who lost both legs in the boston marathon bombing testified today during day two of the trial of accused bomber tsarnaev. he saw tamerlin before the two bombs exploded. tamerlin wasn't watching the race or having fun like everyone else. tsarnaev admits to the bombing. convicted murderer jodi arias did not receive the death penalty today after the jury deadlocked. jurors were split 11-1 in favor of the death penalty and ride to get the lone hold out kicked off the panel. she killed her lover in 2008.

a white lion cub built an unusual but very precious friendship today with a black bear cub in thailand. the adorable lion cub is in the process of separating from its mother. a farmer found the abandoned black bear cub and took it to the zoo. the bear seems content to just lie around while the lion plays nearby. management at the zoo is holding a naming contest for the pair. the winner gets prize money and one year free admission to that zoo. >> we're getting a rare closeup look at a mom and her two mountain lion kittens in the wild. park rangers kept an eye on is this mother and her kittens for a while.

rangers say it appears these kittens have left their mom sometime since the photos were taken last month. the mail cub, he doesn't look happy. get that camera out of there. this is the first time they've been able to track a male mountain lion after it entered the santa monica mountains. >> incredible pictures. stay away. nice day outside it seems to be getting warmer and warmer. >> our cool cats. >> once upon a time i was. >> here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. we have sunny skois across the bay area. as we look at the national weather picture for tomorrow, we'll see that storm pushing offshore with the exception of parts of florida, which will still get some showers. it will be cold in the northeast, not brutally cold, just a typical winter day. back to california tomorrow another sunny and mild day from

travelers stranded. according to flight aware, nearly 5,000 flights have been cancelled today, another 3600 were delayed. imagine the backups from here on out. one particularly egregious incident. passengers stuck on the tarmac in dallas for hours overnight. >> michael finney is here now with a look at whether rules are designed to protect passengers. >> this weather is really going to be a test of the rule that airlines must not hold passengers on a tarmac for more than three hours. the dallas ft. worth international airport as you just heard left a jet stranded for hours on a tarmac. passengers were not happy. at this time it appears the airline didn't have much choice. a fine or a reprimand are highly unlikely. the question this winter is posing what did the airline know and when did the airline know it. was it reason will that the airline pulled away from the

terminal? the plane stuck on a tarmac, because of weather, not allowing to take off or return to the terminal are exempt from the rules that say they must be back within three hours. the company behind the snuggie and other as seen on tv products has agreed to pay nearly $8 million to settle charges that it deceived customers. the ftc says that all star marketing group promised customers a buy one get one free promotion, some were still charged for the items in the form of higher shipping and handling costs. they have already made changes to its business to make costs easier to understand saying today that it has successfully worked with the ftc to set new standards of transparency. hbo is hoping to be on just about all devices.

employees lost their jobs this afternoon. santa clara county prepares to take over ownership of the convention center. >> this is putting a cloud over plans for super bowl 50. david louie joins us live at the convention center to explain what happened. david? >> 500 events are held a year here at this convention center. helping to fill up nearby hotels and restaurants. it also supports hundreds of jobs. by this time next month, it may not be able to operate. dozens of employees showed up for a rally, seeking help from a little known but powerful body that can make key decisions about the santa clara convention center. 200 of them work at the convention center. 17 others at the other facilities. >> you walk-through our building now, everyone's still trying to work with a smile on their face, you can tell their hearts are bleeding, no one really knows what the outcome is going to be. >> the convention center opened 29 years old, built by the city

under its redevelopment agency. governor brown eliminated such agencies three years ago as part of budget cuts. assets have to be sold off. the agency has been asked by the county to cut out over $900,000 that funds the convention bureau. the county takes ownership next month. >> the city won't own it any more in april. and the oversight board has not approved any funding from april through the end of june. >> this comes as santa clara is working on civic events at levi stadium. >> if they want to embarrass us when it comes to the 50th superbowl, they want to deprive us of a county and a region to shine. >> the oversight board turned down the motion. it approved the cuts. both motions on a 5-2 vote with the only support coming from the two city of santa clara representatives. that means the convention center is in doubt.
