>> this is abc7 news. >> good morning everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday march 8th. let's start with a quick first look at our whether with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning carolyn. we have fog at the shoreline and that will allow for cooler temperatures there. we still have will above normal readings with plenty of sunshine. here's a look from our roof camera, 40s and 50s around the bay. 43 gilroy, 51 san francisco, and oakland. it is clear here so the fog is confined right to the coast and it should stay there. 52 fairfield, 47 santa rosa. it's warmer than it was yesterday. so the fog footprint you can see tries to get into the bay but

quickly retreats and whether he see the cooler numbers from point reyes to ocean beach in san francisco. we will talk about the rain coming our way perhaps midweek in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you lisa. a lot of questions this morning about a one alarm fire in san jose that not only destroyed a house. in this story you will seasonal on 7, police found 443 marijuana plants inside the house in the area of prairie wood court last night. authorities say the fire started in the garage around 7:30. neighbors say no one lived there but they did see people coming and going over the past couple of weeks. >> people that were recently here would come home and just pull their car in the garage and they would close the garage and they never really came through the front entry door. >> the pot is valued at half a million dollars. police say the home by passed

pg&e and stole electricity to power the marijuana grow. >> a brazen crime caught on video. a pack of car thieves strikes four dealerships in one night. now police are on their trails. the dealerships were ransacked and several cars stolen. one business owner said two break-ins have already cost him $50,000. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the story. >> this is surveillance video of seven young men rushing into two car dealerships. >> they get into the office and try to find the keys we have open and they go to the cars out front and drive off with it. >> he's warned his future burglars that a break-in would be useless. he has already lost more than $50,000, including this car that was stolen during a break-in sunday. it feels found monday. >> all the cars seem to be recovered in oakland or

somewhere in oakland but this one i think was on the highway but in oakland. chp picked it up. >> a few doors down the front window was marked at the motors. burglars made off with several keys and cars. >> they are skilled, know what they are doing. they were able to take a couple mercedes-benz. >> three car dealerships was broken into and a fourth was also hit. they were repositioning this truck to block their driveway, an attempt to prevent anyone from using keys stolen during last night's break-in in return for the cars now. police are combing through surveillance videos to see if they can identify the seven young men. until they are caught he has advice for other car dealerships. >> i suggest other car dealerships in the area to not leave their keys on-site anymore overnight because obviously these juveniles don't really care. >> he will also be installing more surveillance cameras.

abc7 news. oakland police are searching for anyone who may have witnessed the deadly stabbing of a woman near broadway auto row. officers found the woman in a commercial area at webster and 23rd street near the ymca around 4:00 p.m. yesterday. police were there well into the night looking for clues. oakland police are also looking for the driver of a g. o. prism. they say the driver hit and killed a woman at 8th and pine street just before 2:30 yesterday afternoon. the driver left the car and ran away. police do not have a description of that person. a man in his mid-30s is in critical condition with serious head injuries after his bicycle was hit by a fire truck early yesterday morning in san francisco. it happened at mason and turk streets. a witness posted this picture to instagram. you see the bicycle there stuck underneath the fire truck. the witness told us the firefighters had the green light.

the truck was returning from a call and did not have its emergency lights or siren on. hay wood police are searching for a man want ford attempted kidnapping and neighbors say his sketch looks awfully familiar. this is that sketch. a man accused of trying to force a 15-year-old girl into his car on whitman street and sycamore avenue after school friday. he's in his early 20s scrub by beard and no mustache. he was wearing prescription glasses. students said they have seen him around the area before. >> i've seen him walking over here. >> she is saying she's seen him. >> the man was driving a white honda sedan. police think he may have tried to snatch a 14-year-old girl near joshua and ebony way last

month. a dangerous situation in the parking lot across a shopping center in pleasant hill last night. a driver hit a fire hydrant, sending water shooting more than 50 feet in the area. aware pressure sent rocks and asphalt flying, some as heavy as two pounds. it damaged at least one parked car. fortunately known was hurt. hundreds of thousands of people from all over the bay area poured into san francisco yesterday for the chinese new year parade. it is the largest of its kind outside asia. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson shows us the colorful floats and the elaborate costumes. >> in first anticipation thousands of people behind barriers waited for it to come. then -- a deadly -- a display of students kept them down market

includes a finding that the battery of an underwater beacon that could have been used to locate the plane had expired more than a year before the aircraft vanished. it found both the captain and the crew showed no odd behavior or signs of stress before the flight took off. australian's prime minister said despite the amount of time that's passed the search for the plane must continue. >> we owe it to the families of the dead. we owe it to the traveling public to do whatever we reasonably can to resolve this mystery. it's one of the great mysteries. the 21st century. >> in late january malaysia's government declared it an accident and said all people on board are declared dead. in selma alabama, president obama joined thousands marking the 50th anniversary of a landmark moment in the civil rights movement. back in 1965 peaceful protesters

better than others. here's michael finney. >> cheryl's teenage nephew died in a fire last year and it's still not clear whether the home he was staying in had a fire alarm. >> i think they didn't wake up until the fire was really engulfing the house. >> the home fire and the risk of fire is cut in half if you have a working smoke alarm arecord to go the national fire protection association. she tests smoke alarms for consumer reports. in this chamber he creates fires to see how quickly alarms respond. >> there are basically two types of fires smoky, smoldering fires that are best detected by alarms with photoelectric sensors and fast fires with flames best detected by alarms with ionization detectors. >> they say you are safest with an alarm that weekly detects both types of fires. like the dual sensors they recommended. the mechanic pi2010 and the

overall a much milder morning. the fog insulated us somewhat. and sutro showing the city below. so not really be a secured. the fog is right at the beaches. 52 fairfield. 32 livermore. and visibility is an issue for the santa rosa to petaluma with three quarters file. five miles along the coast. and 8-mile visibility in oakland. so 24-hour temperature change. a little cooler in our inland east bay but it is warmer here from novato to santa rosa and 7 degrees warmer half moon bay. so the changes come slowly and they come subtly day-to-day. in fact today the changes at the coast due to the low clouds and fog. and that will keep the numbers cooler there into the 60s with partial sunshine. elsewhere we still are dominated by the big ridge of high pressure that's going to stay with us through tomorrow and begin to break down on tuesday. that will bring cooler and cloudier weather. looks like we will get a little rain from the system headed our

way. so tons of areas of high pressure here. the system still is offshore and this is what will be coming towards us once the high begins to fade and move to the east. but between now and then we are looking at warm days cool nights. and once the system moves through, once again, back to much above average temperatures. so here's a look at what you can expect. rain coming in late tuesday into wednesday. the focus should be south of the bay area. maybe a few light raindrops for you and then back to high pressure with above average temperatures right after in terms of this week. still look at bookends between the warmer temperature at each end of the front. so it is expected to move in midweek. look how it drops the indianapolis san jose. going for mid-70s down to the mid-60s just for the day and back up. should be about 66 or 67 this time of year for the average. highs around the bay today, very subtle changes from the coast mid-60s san francisco.

ff >> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning everyone. starting out with fog from novato to santa rosa. quarter mile to three quarter mile visibility with slightly warmer temperatures. 350 in hayward and 46 in los gatos. the low to fog and clouds allowing for a good situation this morning. the fog will stay with us throughout the morning hours. it pulls back but it stays along the coast, allowing for cooler temperatures around beaches to san francisco. in fact, a look outside you see the visibility pretty good from the vollmer peak camera. cooler highs from mid-60s at the coast but plenty of 70s for

the next couple days until a system brings in cooler weather and rain. we will talk about it coming up. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. more protests in madison wisconsin after the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager friday night. [chanting] >> protesters gathered outside the police department and throughout the city chanting and holding signs that say "black lives matter." madison's police chief said officer matt kinney shot and killed 19-year-old tony robinson after the suspect assaulted him. >> we have to be clear about this. i want to be very transparent. he was unarmed. >> my son is now another statistic, another black kid shot by the police for no reason. >> robinson's family is asking protests to be peaceful. officer involved has more than 12 years experience and was cleared of any wrongdoing in a previous shooting. wisconsin department of justice will now lead the investigation.

another march is planned for wednesday in madison. [chanting] >> protesters marched through san francisco's mission district last night where police shot and killed 21-year-old man back on february 27th. police say two plain clothed officers witnessed lopez trying to rob a bicyclist with a 6-inch knife and they opened fire, they say, when he refuse today drop the weapon. lopez's family disputes the officers' account of what happened. authorities in santa clara county are still on the lookout for a jailed inmate who escaped from valley medical center in san jose friday. list say he was being treated when he attacked a deputy and ran off. a search throughout the evening failed to find him. 40-year-old johnell carter was arrested last year on suspicion

of child molestation. this weekend six patients have new kidneys thanks to surgeon at california pacific medical center and thanks to sis donors including this woman. she is credited with kicking off the largest kidney donation chain in the 44-year history of cpmc's transplant's center. she want to give the organ but had no one to accept it. she found a resippant through the program match grid. and they matched five others creating the rare, six-way kidney swap. the hospital shared this interview with abc7 news. >> i just feel like everything happened -- everybody played an intricate part and everything was supposed to happen. >> she plans to run a marathon

later this year. doctors say those who had surgery thursday are already up and walking. some of the youngest baseball players took over o.co stadium yesterday. yesterday was opening day. we were there for it all. every year the oakland a's invite potential future major leaguers to parade through the coliseum grounds and play in a special fan zone. kids from all over the bay area ranging from age from 5 to 17. it's become a right of passage just before springtime. >> it's a good day for us. >> it's a great way to start the season off. >> i feel great. a big responsibility for us. >> more than 1,000 young players took part yesterday. three new pups are about it

make their debut at the academy of science necessary san francisco. dan ashley takes us behind the scenes to meet these guys and find out about these international effort to save their species from extinction. >> now this guy is only three days old. >> this little fellow was born in december. when we first met him he hadn't even opened his eyes. but he could eat. >> he's got a big old full belly now. >> this is at the academy of sciences at golden gate park. it's one of the academy's most popular and has had great success with breeding. six weeks after we saw the new chick, we came back if for a progress report from the penguin keeper. >> he's doing great. he's gained a lot of weight since the time you saw him. >> the chick is actually the third born at the museum since november. another few were a few weeks older and had had that are

swimming feathers. young zest still covered with down. >> you see their wings are still sloppy, not ready for swimming like hers are. >> the chicks are african penguins, an endangered species. the academy has been breeding them tore more than 20 years with other scientific institutions and zoos. when old enough they will be moved to other colonies to make sure there's no inbreeding weren't want to have a genetically diverse of a african penguins in captivity 50 to 100 years from now. >> academy biologists are part of the effort to pep penguins survive in the wild. they traveled to south africa where the penguin population dropped 70 percent since 2001. it shows the massive effort to rescue hundreds of chicks abandoned by their parents because there's in the enough food during part of the season. >> we have to figure out about the ager picture. >> the chicks must all be

considering raising water rates. according to the mercury news, the santa clara valley water district east bay mud and the san francisco public utilities commission are considering raising rates up to 30% this year. the reason? to cover the cost of lost water sales. the agencies say they are selling a lot less water as customers conserve because of the drought. san jose's restricted watering hours have changed with daylight savings. starting today watering will be allowed only before 8:00 a.m. and after 8:00 p.m. despite a few impressive rainstorms this winter california's multi-year drought is still far from over. we know the need to save water remains critically important. well, you know what? san jose the week ahead no mid-70s. only one day where it will just be around average. yes, the unusual spring-like weather continues. right now this morning in

gathering in san francisco take place at 24th and mission street at 2:00 this afternoon. >> the professional business women of california is known for supporting the next generation of young business leaders. abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez met last year's scholarship recipient a u.c. berkeley student who is on track to lead others. >> she is a freshman as cal who understands why many black students avoid u.c. berkeley. >> i see all of these students but a lot of them are like out of berkeley. and even if they could they are just like what does berkeley have to offer me? >> but by coming here she knew she would send a powerful message to other african-american students younger than her. today she's part of the recruitment retention program at cal. that love for mentoring and leadership started here at oakland tech where she attended high school. >> they continue to mentor students of underserved

communities through an organization called 100 strong which connects students with female mentors the u.c. berkeley. >> once a week she and the other cal mentors come to berkeley where they tell girls in middle school that anything is within reach. >> we go to the campus we hold workshops and let hem go with us across campus and let them see what there is to look forward to. >> there was a scholarship last year from the professional business women of california. each year four scholarships are awarded during their conference. >> helping them create not only opportunities for working with other women but who can then be their support structures for years to come as they progress in their careers. >> she is double majoring in computer science and international business. >> i want to come back to oakland and come back to my home and just recreate business.

shoreline beaches, warm inland against with mid-70s and cooler and cloudier as we head toward late tuesday into wednesday with maybe a few showers around here. so we need the moisture. we have the mechanism to bring us the rain. looks like we could get a little bit of rain but not for the short term. the big dome of high pressure still projecting us today. tomorrow begins to drift to the east on tuesday. and that allows this semenov to get going. another one joining it. that should bring us perhaps a little bit of rain. but the focus will be south of san francisco. this morning some fog here and there. but it doesn't last long. in fact the mild numbers return. well above average again. the common theme with the 70s around the bay. and the 60s right at the coast. so we will look for that cooler day in san francisco by wednesday. bringing the numbers to where they should be, mid-60s. then after that that ridge builds back in and we are warmer again for the last week of
