abc7 news starts right now with live breaking news. >> that breaking news is at the civic center train station in san francisco. the station just reopened. as police -- police are looking for a man who pushed another man into a muni train. it started with a fight on the train's platform. the vic tunnel fell -- the victim fell in front of the train. >> it looks like somebody took a sledgehammer to the driver's side window. >> the victim went to san francisco general hospital with life-threatening injuries. police say the suspect ran away and they continue to look for him. follow us on twitter at abc7 news bay area and watch the abc7 morning news at 4:30 for updates. good evening. our other top story tonight a boat fire near angel island forced seven people to abandon ship and tonight those survivors credit two fishermen

for coming to their rescue. it happened in raccoon straight. abc7 news reporter lilian kim is live with the story. >> katie, the boat is being stored here at the army corp of engineers, and because of two men the seven people on board lived to tell their story. >> what started out as a beautiful day on the bay quickly turned to a nightmare. smoke started pouring out of the 43-foot motor yacht and it appears that the passengers were the last to know. heidi was among the seven people on board. >> and people were waiving and dad was waiving back, but not realizing that they were telling me there was smoke and coming on board. we looked and very, very quickly put on our life jackets. >> fortunately two cousins fishing for crab were nearby but at first they didn't think the smoke was a big deal. >> we thought it was a barbecue. we didn't think anything of

it. we were out by the golden gate bridge and hear the distress call. >> they turned around immediately going full to the yacht. they say it was the perfect boat in this situation. >> it is capable of getting to the boat and staying alongside for you to get people on and off the boat. >> even with the right boat the rescue wasn't easy. the smoke was getting intense making it difficult to breathe. they had to get the seven people off quickly. >> i have to give credit to them. they kept calm and collected the entire time. it wasn't a panic situation. >> the boat sustained significant damage. the cause is yet to be determined. firefighters say it started in the engine come partment -- compartment. she can't believe she sur slived slived -- survived the ordeal. she owes them her life. >> they saved seven people's lives on the san francisco bay. >> two cousins out fishing for the day and ending up as real life heros.

lilian kim, abc7 news. >> a dozen people were displaced after a fire burned an apartment in oakland. it shows the flames and the heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the building. it happened after international boulevard and 53rd avenue. no injuries are reported. the building houses a business and three apartments. the fire started in one of those units. a woman killed in a hit-and-run crash in west oakland was a beloved east bay artist. tonight police are searching for the driver who hit celeste howle. a driver lost control and drove on to the sidewalk and hit and killed her. the driver left the car behind and ran away. she created custom jewelry. her long-time partner is devastated over losing the love of his life. >> she was the most beautiful person in the world. she is a practicing buddhist. she wouldn't hurt a fly.

she was taken from us way too soon. >> she always drove to work in jack london square, but decided to walk yesterday because the weather was nice. five people were taken to the hospital after a car overturned and caught fire in the marin head lands. officials say all five people were wearing their seatbelts preventing serious injuries. the crash caused the closure of the bunker road tunnel for nearly 10 hours today. new at 11:00 a tribute show was held in oakland in honor of a murdered 14-year-old boy. an honor student at oakland tech and a football player was killed last month while walking to the store. the community came together to throw a comedy tribute show at shadow ultra lounge. his father said it is a response to the violence in oakland and he wants to bring more awareness to what is going on in the community. >> it shouldn't have happened to him. it shouldn't happen to any child. people are getting tired of just marching when

it does it would be great for joggers. i don't have to get a fit bit so that would be great. >> apple has become a multi million dollar company and there are expectations. >> the biggest challenge is if this is so great, i can't think of anything the apple watch does that you can't do on an iphone. >> he covers technology companies and he says the apple watch will have to overcome some hurdles that other smart watches are already trying to handle. >> there are a lot of smart watches out there and they haven't done that great on the market. they have to say, hey we are not first. we're different and here is why. >> it should answer basic questions from potential customers like expected battery life, retail price for all four models and how it fits in with other devices others own orie places them. or replaces them. >> the excitement will be driven by the apps. >> there is a lot riding on this for ceo tim cook. it is the first product conceived since steve jobs'

she and 11 other kidney donors and recipients are doing well. and she has extra cause to feel good. she is the one who started the life saving chain of events. >> the decision was easy. it has always been digger than me. >> she has wanted to donate a kidney for years and she started the process to help a friend of hers. that donation didn't work out. but she was unwaivering in her desire to help someone. >> i went on to give it to the next person to hopefully help with the quality of life and extend some life. >> she thought she was only helping one person. but they had a relative but was incompatible, so they donated to a different stranger. there were six donors helping six strangers. >> i don't know who mine went to still, but they said -- one of the ladies said her mom was waiting for 11 years. 11 years for her kidney and

8:00 p.m. despite a few impressive rainstorms the multi-year drought is far from over. water rates could be going up. the santa clara valley water district and the san francisco public utilities commission and the east bay municipal district are considering rate hikes up to 30% this year. they need to increase rates because they are selling less water as customers conserve due to the drought. and it has never been so obvious of the drought than these last couple days with all of the sun and the heat we have seen a little change on tap. >> yes the winter that wasn't. we have had warm temperatures and dry conditions and that's how the forecast is shaping up. it is one day with a chance of showers. we are showing you that we have cloud cover pushing in along the coast but we are dry for the moment. high temperature is the big story. san francisco is one of the cooler spots relatively speaking coming with a high of 68 degrees. san jose is a warm high of 71

and premont 73 and livermore is nice and toesy at 77 degrees and redwood city is a temperature of 72 degrees this afternoon. right now the temperatures have fallen back off those highs to the 40s and 50s. 48 in novato. it is 54 in hayward and 57 in antioch and san jose coming in with a temperature of 54 degrees. as we go into the forecast future mode tomorrow morning 5:00 in the morning clouds along the coast and spilling into the bay. that will keep the temperatures falling not too far from where they are right now. a lot of 50s to start off our monday. by monday midday, the clouds move out of the bay, but they are still hugging the coast. we have a wide range in temperatures by monday afternoon. 50s along the coast but a lot of 70s starting to pop up inland where we have the sunshine. by monday afternoon and into the evening the clouds will pull back just enough that we could see sunshine late in the afternoon and bumping us into the 60s. fair field antioch livermore

and san jose likely getting into the midand even lower 70s for your monday. we will see a mixture of stars and clouds. 46 in half moon bay and 47 palo alto. 44 the overnight low in fair field. highs for your monday, location is key tomorrow in terms of how warm you get. along the coast you are cooler. up to 66 in san francisco and napa 72 and fairfield up to 73 and antioch is nice and warm with a temperature of 75 degrees. once again it is warm weather and dry conditions really enhancing the allergies. the tree pollen is high for tomorrow. so your accu-weather seven-day forecast, tomorrow we have the coastal clouds out there and on tuesday everyone sees the clouds increase ahead of our next system. the system arrives on wednesday. certainly you will get cooler temperatures. we are into the midand low 60s across the board.

the 49ers traded away joe montana and jerry rice ronnie lot, mike shumann -- okay that doesn't belong, but they let frank gore lead the free agency on his way to philadelphia. he was waiting for a decision and the franchise's career rushing leader is gone. the eagles offered a deal for $7.5 million guaranteed in the first two years. that's more the niners wanted to spend on a running back with 2400 rushing attempts at 31 years of age. he needs 927 yards to be the 15th running back in nfl history for 12,000 yards. he ran for 1100 last season, and he still has a little gas left in the tank.

the clashes 50 years ago between police and demonstrators during the self-rights strug -- the civil rights struggle. an estimated 15 to 20,000 people were at the infamous bridge in selma. they remembered the 1965 voting rights march that turned into bloody sunday. house minority leader nancy pelosi was also in selma. she and other dignitaries laid a wreath at the alabama state capitol. an anniversary march will take place tomorrow. today marks the anniversary of combat troops arriving in vietnam. two battalions made up of hundreds of marines arrived 0* march 8th, 1965. they were sent in to help the south vietnam government with communist forces. the american troops left the country in 1973. more than 58,000 u.s. troops lost their lives in the war.

emotional gatherings for the disappearance of flight 370. now new details on the biggest aviation mystery. here is bob woodruff. >> it has been a year since flight 370 disappeared and still no signs of the 239 people on board. today in ma malaysia there were vigils and families showed their growing frustration. continue the search they said. give us our relatives back. more than 150 passengers on that malaysian airline were chinese. i was there when the family's anger was beginning to rise. >> out of control here. i just can't even believe this. >> after 12 months of searching no real clues and just some new details in a report released yesterday. apparently the battery of the underwater locator beacon of the plane's data recorder expired more than a year before the plane vanished and

it may not have been working. as for the pilot and copilot there is no indication there was any responsibility in bringing the plane down. all that is known is 12:41 a.m. local time the boeing 777 takes off and 239 people on board. 2:40 a.m., the plane is cruising at 35,000 feet when it loses radar contact. no distress call is ever received. as for the search, it has cost close to $100 million. so far only 40% of the ocean floor they inend ited to cover has been completed. although it is unclear how long it will continue. >> we owe it to the families of the dead and we owe it to the public to do what we reasonably can. >> many of them don't believe their loved ones died for sure. the malaysian government said all of the passengers are dead, but the families here say they need absolute proof before they believe it.

>> that was bob woodruff reporting. >> pleasanton police are searching for two people in an assault and robbery at home depot. police say this woman stole several power tools. a loss prevention officer stopped her in the parking lot, but her accomplice hit him with his car. the two took off. he injured his knee and is expected to recover. >> a speakout was held in san francisco. it was held at 24th and mission streets. it joins voices as a protest to win equality for rights. it is a call to action for the numerous issues facing women today. international women's day has been celebrated in the u.s. since 1909. advocates held a protest in san francisco against the archbishop's controversial decision to have teachers follow strict morality rules.

protesters are upset with the morality clause that employs what high schools must follow. several teachers and staff members are urging the arch bish bish -- bishop to remove it from the faculty handbook. nothing but net. it was not just a basketball tournament. the warriors took part in a global effort to beat malaria. there was nothing but net and they donate life saving nets to people in africa. they donated a bed net for every ticket sold today, and a high school student got an award for raising thousands of dollars for the cause. >> one child dies in africa every 60 seconds. in a class period of 85 minutes aid 5 kids die.

the debate over short-term rental rules moves to palo alto tomorrow. city council will look at how to regulate short-term rental websites. issues of parking safety and taxes will all be discussed. the tide may be turning for 400 people facing eviction in the heart of silicon valley. hundreds of community members are expected at a rally tomorrow as the battle to save the park turns into a symbol

of the critical need for affordable housing. tonight news anchor dan ashley has a look at why this fight is attracting government attention and money. >> this is buena vista, the last home in a tight knit community of low income latino families who work in the wealthy neighborhoods around them. >> i like this place because it is a safe place to live. my whole family lives there. >> the four and a half acre lot is a hodge podge of rv's neatly kept homes and a few studio apartments. the rent is a third on average, but the owner wants to sell. >> everything will disappear. >> erika grew up at buena vista. they came back to work in the community and raise their son here. >> if the park closes almost none of the rise dents could afford to stay in the area. >> people are going to lose their job, the kids will have to move schools. >> the family would not talk,

but they have been trying for three years to close the park and sell the land for luxury apartments. the property may be worth as much as $30 million. they are representing the residents for free. >> it really is symbolic for how many working class families and families of color are being forced out of silicon valley in the greater bay area. >> palo alto city regulations require the owner compensate current residents if the park closes. while the fight overcome pen sayings drags on a new plan is taking shape to preserve the land for affordable housing. >> these folks who work in the community are part of our daily success. the city, the county the region runs on their baylor. on their labor. >> the county board of supervisors has authorized $8 million to help find a solution. the palo alto city manager
