a family of five including three children in the hospital this morning after firefighters rescued the family from a raging fire. it happened early this morning in san francisco's mission district. thanks for joining us i'm cheryl jennings. >> i'm kristen sze. the investigation into the cause of the fire is under way. meantime neighbors described firefighters' rescue efforts this morning as truly heroic. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield has been on the scene all morning at 24th street and treat avenue. amy? >> reporter: the firefighters

have figured out that most of the damage was to the front living area of the apartment. it is still under investigation but they say at this point nothing looks suspicious. but they are still trying to figure out what started this fire in but they are feeling very proud about the rescues. a family of five needed rescuing from the second floor apartment, which was on fire at 4:30 this morning. firefighters pulled all five to safety. a mother, father and three kids. they got them out through different exits including a window. the father and two of the kids were unconscious. >> hearing people screaming yelling, an emotional scene. so, yeah, there is a dark, heavy smoke conditions, active flame and make rescues the way they did out of three different means of egress, they did a phenomenal job. >> reporter: the youngest victim, a 6-year-old boy was one of the unconscious victims. >> youngest one actually regained consciousness. so we were really happy about that. >> reporter: the family home is above a liquor store that neighbors say the family owns.

the building is located at 24th and treat in san francisco's mission district. the next door neighbor's home was spared you they did evacuate. >> the house filled up with smoke. so we had to get out and went out and sat in the car. and sad because the next door neighbor and we shopped there all the time. >> reporter: the family is well known and appreciated in the neighborhood. >> they work hard. they had like 24/7. why would they work really hard and they are really nice people. >> reporter: you're looking the a live picture of some of the relatives of the victims. they tell us they think the kids are going to be okay. they are still worried about the dad. s in the the security bars and also see that big chain? that's padlock. it was locked and firefighters found two people inside the liquor store sleeping on

mattresses. they had to bust down the door to free them. the people ran away. they were okay but firefighters didn't get to talk to them but they say they want to know more about that situation. they say that is obviously not safe and is illegal. live in san francisco amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> amy, thank you. and this fire just half a mile from another devastating fire in the mission. on january 28th the fire broke out at mission and 22nd. that was six weeks ago today. that fierce flame you can see they ripped through the old building. sky 7 hd was overhead. one man died in that fire. dozens lost their homes and businesses. members of the community have stepped up to raise funds and donate goods to help those impactktcted pie eded by that fire many recovering. a massive search is under way for the remains of 11 members of the u.s. military who were presumed dead after their helicopter crashed during a training exercise. the tragic accident happened at

eglin air force base in valparaiso, florida an hour east of pensacola. we are joined now from the newsroom with more. >> reporter: we don't know the cause of this investigation but know the seven marines and four members of the national guard were flying in dense fog when they crashed into the water last night. these pictures show some of the military deb prayer wheel and mangled pieces of the black hawk helicopter found in the water off the coast of the florida panhandle near pensacola. a coast guard vessel first made the discovery this morning. officials say human remains also washed ashore. search crews continue to sift the waves for wreckage and for clueses as to how the helicopter crashed. all 11 crew members on board are presumed dead. >> my thoughts and prayers are with them and their families as the search and rescue continues. >> reporter: the chopper was carrying seven marines and four soldiers when it disappeared last night at the eglin air force base.

the crew was taking part in a special operations training mission. pilots typically wear night vision goggles and sometimes drop trainees over the water. it was dark with a dense going advisory in effect when the aircraft went down over a stretch of beach. >> there was fog. i do not know at this time if it was a con tributing factor but when our search and rescue personnel arrived on scene there was limited visibility. >> reporter: this is video from the air force base today where heavy fog is hampering the search. officials have not named those missing. the marines were from a camp leash sean in north carolina, the pilots from the national guard stationed in hammond louisiana. a reminder to us that those who serve put themselves at risk in training and in combat. >> reporter: there was a second helicopter also taking part in that training mission. it landed pack at the base safely. in the newsroom alyssa

harrington abc7 news. >> thank you. police linked at least one homicide to an illegal gam bring operation in the south bay. it was connected to a december shooting that left a man dead. the fbi, state and local agencies raided 11 vietnamese bars and cafes in san jose last night, confiscating about 100 gambling machines. dozens of people were detained for questioning. in the east bay albany police are investigating their first murder in more than a decade. police say 37-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment monday lying in a pool of blood with a bullet casing nearby. neighbors heard a gunshot sunday night, did not report it because they didn't realize what it was at the time. paul was in her final year of school at ucf school of dentist trip. a story you will see only on abc7 news. an east bay student is back in class today nearly a month and a half after he was beaten unconscious by another student. abc7 news was with the parents

and grand parents of 11-year-old nathan as they pleaded with the west contra costa school board to remove nathan's accused attacker from downer elementary school. the family says that boy, just 10 years old, attacked nathan once before and most recently gave him a concussion. he only got a five-day suspension. and that left nathan scared to return to school. this morning, his mother told abc7 news the pulley has been remove and nathan happy returned to school. the california highway patrol reopened highway 280 northbound near los altos following a deadly crash early this morning during a rain storm. the chp says one car drifted toward the center divider and a second car hit the first car. one person was ejected and died at the scene. that crash happened just after 1:45 this morning near foothill expressway. the early morning rain made the roadways very slippery and it brought a little teeny hope of drought relief. matt keller joins us from san jose with more.

not much though, huh? >> reporter: nice right now the weather has cleared up a little bit. no rain. but it is still soggy and wet out here. here is santana row, a lot of people like to be outside and eat lunch, still soggy, the chairs wet, the tables wet nobody is out eating outside right now, of course, still early. while this little storm may be bad for business here most certainly good for the bay area. dust off the umbrellas, rain made an appearance in san jose this morning much the wet weather dampened the morning commute with consistent showers lasting through 8 this morning. but don't expect people to be bummed out especially after a long stretch of dry weather. >> i love the rain. >> you forget your umbrella or basking in the water? >> how i was born loving the weather, like that. no um presently la. >> reporter: this morning didn't have much of an impact on the drought conditions in the bay area. the santa clara valley water district extended its resolution calling for a 20% water use reduction through june this year. people are conserving,

we have breaking news now in florida, police are responding to a report of four people shot at rapper lil wayne's home near miami. you are looking at a live picture there authorities have not confirmed a report or who made the call. it is also not clear whether lil wayne, whose real name is dwayne michael carter, was home at the time. you we will keep we will keep our eye on the breaking news story. that is a home on a private island not far off from miami. some shocking new video this morning showing a father smuggling his baby out of a phoenix hotel.

authorities say that 2-day-old baby was born with drugs in her system. social workers were on their bay to take custody of her when the father put her in a plastic bag and tried to sneak her out of the hospital. the building was under lockdown because of a device on the baby's arm. the father at first tried to leave through a locked exit but instead walked out the front door. he was later arrested and the baby is in the care of child protective services. new this morning, university of oklahoma students have turned to campus monuments to express the feelings on the heels of a fraternity firestorm. statues across campus have their mouths taped over with the word "unheard." unheard is an alliance of black students at ou known to rally for change. the student newspaper has posted photos of the statues which is one day after the sigma alpha epsilon sae house was closed. one of two students identified as leading a racist chant at an sae convenient is apologizing now. parker rice is calling his own

guys. three new friends joined a penguin colony this morning at the california academy of sciences. >> the trio of penguin chicks were born last year. the academy tells us they are getting acclimated to their surroundings. spent several months bonding learning to swim and eat fish before they joined the main colony of 14 african penguins. >> one of the curators says there are common misperceptions about penguins. >> chili willy is kind of a myth. out of the 17 piece sees of penguins, most are temperate. only a couple that actually live in the antarctic year round. >> well, the academy is holding a naming contest for two of the chicks and they are gonna take
