e was saying that you know can somebody come and help, my cousin has been killed in her apartment. >> so when he opened the door basically that's what he said he found the body on the floor. >> reporter: that cousin told us by phone that the apartment door was closed when he arrived but not locked and she was laying in a pool of blood, a bullet casing on the floor. sing told us, quote, the family is devastated right now. each one of us is crying night and day. we can't put a finger on why anyone would do this. there is some indication she recently met a man on the internet, though it's not clear whether police believe that played a role in her murder. this neighbor lives in the apartment building next door. >> the other day i came home and there was police and everybody here. i just was shocked. >> reporter: the 37-year-old was in her final semester at ucsf in the international dental program. her cousin told us she was a practicing dentist in her native india. now he says that's where they

will take her body home for burial. laura anthony, abc 7 news. the mother of a 20-day-old baby boy will face murder charges in her son's death. prosecutors filed upgraded charges against 23-year-old samantha lee green. she was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter last week. green and her son were reported missing february 23rd. she was found the next day claiming they had both been kidnapped, but the baby's body was found the day after that in a remote body of water. autopsy results suggest the infant either drowned or died from hypothermia. happening now in sacramento county, emergency crews are at the scene where a truck hauling a trailer plunged off interstate 5 into a slew. the truck driver was trapped nearly an hour before firefighters could free him. the accident happened near the san joaquin county line. it is not clear what caused the truck to swerve off the freeway. police are investigating a potential abduction attempt of a

12-year-old girl. the student was walking to school about 7:00 this morning when a man stopped his vehicle and asked whether she wanted a ride. the girl took off running. sky 7 hd was over antioch high school near where it happened. the man followed her and asked a second time but then she started running again and safely made it to school. a family of five is hospitalized after fire ripped through their home in san francisco's mission district. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez is live from the hospital where the mother and one of the children are recovering tonight. >> reporter: that's right, recovering from inhalation injuries. by the way that child is about 10 years old dan. the other three, a father a daughter and a teenage boy were sent to san francisco general hospital. fire investigators don't know how the fire started. firefighters acted quickly early this morning to rescue five family members from different parts of this building in the mission district. >> they were able to rescue two

of the boys out the front window where the ladder is behind me. the young girl down the stairs, the entranceway, and they brought the mom and dad out the back way. >> reporter: while they were doing that they discovered two more people sleeping inside the liquor store on 24th and treat. firefighters had to cut through two padlocks to rescue them. >> we discovered multiple beds and makeshift beds in there, but there were two people that were padlocked into a room. >> reporter: they were not injured and ran from the location. in october, 2014 a kplangt was filed for using that commercial space for residential purposes. the department of building inspections tried to enter the premises three times and were denied access. the mother's name is mohammed shiedi. he and his family have worked and lived in the neighborhood for years. >> it's sad because it's a next-door neighbor and we shop there all the time. >> reporter: all five family

members remain in the hospital. >> you know like they got burned really bad. i felt bad because he was here with his kids. >> reporter: the department of building inspections posted a notice to keep people out. almost everything they owned was destroyed. in san francisco lyanne melendez abc 7 news. this fire is half a mile from another devastating fire in the mission. six weeks ago today in fact, fierce flames ripped through a building at mission and 22nd. sky 7 hd was overhead to bring you these pictures. one man died dozens lost their homes and businesses. members of the community have stepped up to raise money and donate goods to help those affected by this fire. many of whom are still recovering six weeks later. the shooting death of a guatemalan immigrant -- the clergy went to file a complaint. they say the shooting of perez last month was not justified. perez was killed by two

undercover officers after he did not follow orders to drop a knife. the complaint alleges that perez, who did not speak english, may not have understood those undercover officers. the clergy members want an independent investigation. >> these issues the conflicts of the stories, all remain unresolved because we cannot get any indictments. so that's the problem. the stories simply are not that clear. >> san francisco police claim the shooting was justified and perez was trying to rob a bicyclist with that knife. a san francisco family is desperate to find a stolen urn and understandably so it contains the ashes of their mother. it looks like this exempt it is red. it was taken february 25th. the burglar went to the house on 20th street in the city's pot potrero neighborhood but the family is only asking for the urn to be returned. a small part of the port of oakland is closed because of a

labor dispute over staffing levels. 45 workers were sent home early from their shifts at the ssa container yard in terminal 55. they will all be able to return for their next shift and the terminal will be open tomorrow from what we're told. the port is almost caught up from the backlog from the labor dispute last month. the attorneys for a venture capital firm being sued in a sex discrimination case tried to undermine the woman suing the company. today was the second day of cross examination of ellen pao. she has filed a $16 million lawsuit. tiffany wilson joins us outside superior court in san francisco. tiffany. >> reporter: cheryl, during the cross examination, the attorneys relied heavily on years of e-mail exchanges, all in an attempt to disprove ellen powell's version of events. the cross examination between the attorney and ellen has been

hostile. they played video from her deposition to contradict statements she made in front of the jury. there were a number of e-mails that discountinged her account of events likes this one she sent eight months after the affair. you know i would do anything to preserve our friendship even though sometimes it's harder than other times. a second focus of the cross examination today was workplace conflicts. >> they are trying to establish a real pattern of ellen having problems with people that she worked with. >> reporter: liz gain, senior editor, has covered the case since powell filed suit in may of 2012. >> ellen powell, her personality is really at stake in this case because her former co-workers are aringguing that she was really hard to work with and that's why she was fired. she's arguing that she didn't get the opportunities that she deserved because she's a woman.

>> reporter: they also dug into claims that her partner gave her an inappropriate book of poetry and dinner invitation. he held up a small buddhist statue powell gave and powell agreed the poetry book was given after she gave this gift. during the lunch break hermly approached the judge about powell's motivation for the lawsuit. her husband went bankrupt and it's rumored the couple have financial troubles. previously powell's attorneys got that information barred from the trial. the judge said he'll rule on the motion tonight. in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. late word from sacramento today the california board of education has suspended the state's accountability system to give teachers and students time to adjust to the new common core tests. the common core curriculum focuses more on comprehension. the board has voted not to have an academic performance index for the 2014-2015 school year. superintendent tom torlakson says it wouldn't be fair to

evaluate schools on this year's scores because tests are too different from previous tests. we have an abc 7 news follow-up on an 11-year-old boy who is back in school today after he says a bully kept him out of class for months. nathan was knocked unconscious by another student at downer elementary in san pablo in january. that alleged bully was suspended but went back to school. today nathan's mother contacted us, saying afternoon several meetings with the school district that student has finally been kicked out. nathan went back to school today and has this message for others. >> people who bully are people who have been bullied. so if you are being bullied then don't try and take it out on somebody else, just try to keep it -- just try to keep it inside of you. don't let it out. like i said in there, be a buddy, not a bully. >> he said he felt good and safe returning to school today. >> good for him.

abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard joins us from sausalito with more. cornell? >> reporter: hey, cheryl having way too much fun here. biking into sausalito is so popular, just about every tourist who visits the bay area has to do it. one sausalito city councilwoman says it's too popular. there are way too many people. something needs to be done. if you're a tourist visiting the bay area, biking the bridge into sausalito is almost required. it was for grant and carla from ireland. >> we were literally on the bridge, looked down and went oh my god. it was spectacular. >> reporter: between april and october tourists renting bikes in record numbers. they bike from san francisco to sausalito and ride the ferry back, leaving few places to sit onboard. some downtown streets have become a bike parking lot. >> that's a thousand rental bikes a day coming into our small town and it's just unsustainable to have those numbers exponentially increase

every year. >> reporter: sausalito city councilwoman linda pfeifer says it's a matter of safety with cars and pedestrians. she wants to regulate the number of rental bikes coming into town. the idea of a bike restriction isn't pedaling very far with companies like blazing saddles. the safety video comes first. >> make sure you ride single file. >> reporter: owners are aware that crowded roads are a problem. >> we have been working with the sausalito city council and police department and the ferry companies over the last several years to help improve the situation over there. >> you can't prevent them from coming into town. >> reporter: business owners like ken robinson say bikes bring tourists who spending money. >> if you're going to live here you can't have the beauty of sausalito and keep people out. >> reporter: some tourists are scratching their heads. >> we're trying to ensure that people who are our guests, who come to visit sausalito, leave

with happy memories, not sad memories of bicycle accidents. >> reporter: the idea still in first gear, more research is moving forward. cornell bernard abc 7 news. a san mateo county correctional officer stepped in to help a teenager facing a life-threatening problem. five years ago doctors diagnosed garrett ramos with an immune disorder that could result in kidney failure. this year he founding himself in full kidney failure and needed a life-saving gift to stay alive. this kidney turned out to be the perfect match. after surgery yesterday, both are recovering in the hospital. dozens offered to work his shifts so he can recover without losing any income or sick time. they're both doing quite well. the outpouring of support for a costco worker is growing today and you can help spread the joy by giving to children in

47. michael finney is here with more on that and a look at the businesses that may not be paying their fair share of taxes. >> reporter: the state has a huge list calling it a distinguished 500 list that's making news in california. it is the list of 500 businesses the state says haven't paid their sales and use taxes. the list is available for you to scroll through on the board of equalization site. there number one on the list is a sun valley business which owes the state nearly $6 million and the list goes on from there. >> while they can ignore it but they're going to stay on the list. they're going to stay on the list until they come forward get into a payment plan or pay their debt off in full. >> reporter: taking a look at the list the top bay area company is one doing business as pacific cement according to the state it's doing business in san francisco. it comes in at number 11 on the state compiled list. federal income tax refunds

totaling more than $1 billion are waiting for an estimated one million taxpayers who did not file a federal income tax back in 2011. in california, an estimated 103,700 taxpayers are owed more than $92 million by the irs. now that works out to a median re refund of $627. now the irs would like to reunite taxpayers with all that money, but time iis running out. a 2011 tax return is needed and must be turned in on or before april 15th otherwise by law the money is forfeited to the treasury. when is the best time to buy an airline ticket? a new survey out says sooner rather than later. a survey of more than five million different flights and a billion and a half fares shows the best day to book is 47 days before your flight. if you're booking summer travel

sutro tower camera showing a preview of what's to come. areas of fog overnight tonight, warming trending starts tomorrow and record highs are possible in a few cities on saturday. here's the cold front that came through. yes, it weakened considerably but it did produce some rain. shower threat is ending and now we're basically looking at high pressure building back in. the warming trend starts tomorrow and takes it right on through the start of the weekend. here's a computer animation of the clouds that will linger and fog. you will want to allow extra time for the commute because the fog may be thick in spots. sunny by 10:00 across the entire bay area tomorrow. as you take a look at the temperature trending,, you'll notice where we're going. it's up. we're going to be well above average over the next seven days. on saturday 81 degrees is the predicted high. that ties the previous records, we'll be watching that carefully

an architect who inspired the new google headquarters has won his industry's equivalent of the nobel prize one day after his death. the prize was awarded to fry otto for his pioneering work in lightweight structures. his most famous project may be the pavilion at the 1972 olympics in munich. the building stretched like a

sweep of jiend spiedgiant spider webs. he pioneered some of the most far-reaching feats of structural engineering ever completed. that includes google's new headquarters in mountain view. experts say many buildings of the past 50 years would not exit without otto. at one point he taught at uc berkeley. he was 89 years old. google is branching out. today it launched a new online to showcase its devices. the company also opened its first retail store in london. it will also sell phones and laptops but the real mission is the google brand. lots of displays, virtual video games and wannabe video artists who deface the company logo. the screen can be wiped off in less than a second. nasa is teaming up with the san francisco company to make a version of google glass. the design group made the glasses that project information -- that project
