breaking news in oakland where police have made an arrest in the shooting death of shameel pierce. >> she was walking down the sidewalk on monday afternoon and protecting her children when she was shot. >> the suspect is 19-year-old anthony sims. he was taken into custody at highland hospital tuesday and charged with murder this afternoon. >> he was part of the gun battle monday afternoon near chestnut street and 30th. the victim was simply a bystander. janet o is in oakland gathering details, she will join us live with a full report on abc 7 news at 5:00. we'll have more information as soon as it becomes available.

good afternoon, i'm dan ashley. >> the search is on for the gunman in the shooting of two police officers in ferguson missouri late last night. >> one officer was shot right in the face the other in the shoulder, both we are glad to say are expected to recover. >> marcia gonzalez is in the area with the latest. >> today police surrounded this home. >> they ran up to me. >> kaying several people as they try to track down the gunman. >> shows shots fired around midnight last night. >> shots fired, officer down. >> at the end of a protest sparked. tom jackson announced he was resigning. a response cited widespread racism within the city and department. police say the demonstration was

cities chosen for a federal pilot program aimed at building trust between police and the public in the aftermath of what happened in ferguson attorney general eric holder announced the program today. nearly $5 million will go toward program programs to stop bias. police tell abc 7 news motorcyclists rear ended a car on 15th avenue around 10:00 a.m. the motorcyclist was killed. the victim's identity has not been relieved. police finally caught two men today after a high speed three city chase that went on for hours. it started early this morning in san jose. the men led police on a chase before getting off on freemont avenue in sunnyvale.

they hit a deadend and ditched their car in a neighborhood in sunnyvale. >> i just heard a loud noise in the middle of the night the dogs started barking, . >> it looks like he jumped over my backyard. >> nearly two hours after the chase started they were arrested. the pair face several charges including abating an officer and carjacking. >> there's a warning going around in part of the east bay this evening. after a dead bat was found to have ray bees. >> the bat turned up last friday on blackout road. >> afternoon, we're sitting just in front of the community center. if you follow me this way. there's a playground right there, some families, some kids right there, just yards away from the entrance to the center.

released just today. that's what you're watching. the officers saw the man leap off the overpass. he held on as he dangled 70 feet above another freeway below. an offduty sheriff's deputy and oakland police officer witnessed what happened they helped hoist the man back over the railing. >> this is a positive outcome, there's 1,000 ways this could have ended many we're happy it ended the way it was. we're proud of our officer it was a split second decision, this is what he chose to do. >> the man was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. >> san francisco fire investigators haven't determined what caused yesterday's mission district. there are questions about how long it took an ambulance to get to the scene. abc 7 news has confirmed no ambulances were available for more than six minutes after the first 911 call. fire officials blame it on an unusually high call volume. the city gets an average of 5 emergency calls that time of night. it had 11 ambulances available.

yesterday there were 14 medical calls at the same time. >> there was a little delay in getting an ambulance to the scene, there were three people that could do cpr on them. and all three of them regained pulses. the firefighters trained as paramedic s paramedics. right now the defense is presenting its case in the ellen powell trial. powell took the stand again, she's suing a silicon valley firm that fired her in 2012. details of her severance package were revealed. which included $33,000 a month for six months. her personal finances cannot be used as evidence. the firms lead attorney argues her husband's hedge fund bankruptcy motivated the lawsuit and not discrimination.

president obama has just arrived in los angeles to raise some money. he's going to squeeze in some fun at the same time. this is a live look at los angeles international airport. where his plane just landed. president obama is heading straight to a taping with jimmy kimmel, after he departs the airport, the president made his first appearance on kimmel via satellite back in 2008 after his initial run for the white house. he's going to sit on the sofa tonight on the show and tape with jimmy kimmel this evening.

can't tell whether there's an officer in there. that's the point. bart says they don't always put a police officer in there. they're hoping the presence of the tower is a deterrent. the tower didn't cost bart riders a thing. they covered the $90,000 price tag with grant money. abc 7 news. an entrepreneur who took his love for cycling from the road to the water a couple years ago, is launching a brand new model. judas schiller began a kick starter campaign today for his newest water bike model, the s 1, the handlebars steer the underwater rutter. the company says you can assemble the boik in less than 10 minutes. retail price is just under $4,000. they hope to release the new model in july. there are plenty of new faces on the a's this year, and another one made his debut today. check it out. >> works pretty good right?

checking your headlines at 4:30, there are calls for calm today after the overnight shooting of two police officers in ferguson, missouri. they were wounded during a protest in front of the police department. the officers are expected to fully recover and have already been released from the hospital.

police are still looking for the shooter. abc news tweeted a statement from the parents of michael brown who say they denounce the senseless shooting. abc 7 news reporter chris winn treated this photo after a bad with rabbies was found at a freemont community center. the dead bat was at the entrance to the community center. alameda county vector control is handing out flyers to neighbors. it comes after a string of fatal police shootings involving hispanic men including one where a man carrying garden sheers was shot and killed. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live with a look at what happens next. >> it's not going to be a magical fix or a quick one. that's what ronald davis emphasized today, he is now the director of the justice department's cops program, community oriented policing

unit. he met with the police command this morning before briefing reporters, and now he's meeting with selected community members here at this auditorium. he's telling him that hen watts the salinas police department to become a model for all other police departments in the country. >> the truth hurts. we all know that, but selective ignorance is fatal. >> u.s. justice department staffers will be embedded with salinas police for a two-year collaborative program to implement community policing and build trust with an often hostile community. >> the department will receive technical assistance through the analysis of policies, training and tactics. >> there have been large rallies and marches in the wake of the shootings, at least one turned violent. that was after the shooting in may of a gardiner that was captured by cell and security cameras, they showed two officers with guns drawn. following carlos mahila as he

walks down the street. the officer yells commands. one officer moves to the side multiple shots are fired and mahila falls to the sidewalk. the most recent shooting happened last july when 39-year-old frank alvarado was killed after police said he used this cell phone to simulate a gun. police chief kelly mcmillan welcomes the training for his officers which includes alternatives to lethal force. >> the challenge is in making sure that the appropriate level of force is used given the circumstances. >> activists are skeptical. >> they can't be coming in. everyone holds hands and we hold a conversation, we have the feds walk away. >> everyone agrees on one thing. the challenges are just beginning. vic lee abc 7 news. >> a salvage company is preparing to retrieve the wreckage of a military helicopter that crashed off the florida panhandle tuesday night. crews resume the search today

for the bodies of the service members aboard the black hawk helicopter that went down. in heavy fog between the mainland and the barrier islands. 7 marines and four soldiers were on board, all are believed to be dead. the bodies of two marines have been identified crews are also working to recover the helicopters flight recorder for more information. president obama says tonight he still has full confidence in the secret service director despite another embarrassing moment for the embattled department. the director reassigned two senior agents to desk jobs after accusations they drove a car into a white house security barrier, after allegedly drinking at a retirement party for another agent. the secret service supervisor at the time sent those agents home without giving them a field sobriety test. >> the important part is that you have two secret service agent probably armed in a government car. in some state of ineastbound reation, and that's a no no to

begin with. >> the department of homeland security inspector general will investigate this incident. the secret service has been under fire in recent years after a string of incidents, including a white house fence jumper, who made it into the east room of the white house. bart hailing service lift has raised a million dollars in capital in funding. the japanese online retailer led the latest investment in the company. lift still has a way to go to catch up to its main competitor uber, which has evaluation of $40 billion. uber is the biggest start-up in the united states. a lot of movie news was announced. >> it came courtesy of abc parent company disney. which announced details for the sequel of frozen. and release dates for the star wars films during the annual shareholders meetings. >> cornell bernard was there.

ho a member of the heavy metal band slip not is recovering this afternoon after being stabbed by his brother. police say nick thompson was stabbed in the back of the head during a knife fight yesterday in iowa. the 41-year-old guitarist was rushed to the hospital with a serious but nonlife threatening wound. his brother was also injured. both men were drunk. no word if the stabbing will impact slip knot's north american tour next month. health officials scheduled a meeting with a few problems of design s
